The Vista House was built in 1918 as a rest stop along the Columbia River Highway. It was designed by Edgar Lazarus and features a marble interior. It cost $93,000, about 25 times the original budget and at the time was derided as a "$100,000 outhouse." Definitely worth a stop. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vista_House
Near the end of the Fiery Furnace 'trail' you get this view to the south of the Windows and Double Arches and Balanced Rock. The Fiery Furnace is a permitted entry only area within Arches NP. If you are curious, the 'trail' goes around to the right. Going to the left at this divide/crevasse is a dead end.
Pacific Northwest, Day#2
I finally made it out of the woods... My first stop that day was Multnomah Falls. Really beautiful but crowded! Next stop was up here, looking at the vista house. It was a cloudy day , but for seconds, sun peeked through and like a flood light, lit the vista house!

Vista House on Crown Point in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, is illuminated by the pink sky of a cloud-hidden morning sunrise. Sunrise began at 5:35 am. This shot from the Women's Forum overlook off the Historic Columbia River Highway was taken at 5:41 am, 7 minutes after astronomical sunrise. It benefits from the soft pink and peach color in the cloud breaks outside of the frame.
Notice how Vista House rhymes the shape of Beacon Rock behind it on the Washington side of the Columbia River. While the Columbia is an obvious line leading to Vista House, there is also a leading S-curve starting in the lower righthand corner with the forested cliff and leading to Vista House and then the vanishing point of the Columbia.
Finally, folding the image on a diagonal along the Columbia reveals a rough symmetry between the Oregon and Washington sides of the Columbia that includes the Vista House and Beacon Rock similarity. Rotating the image upside down also suggests a rough symmetry.
A night shot of Portland's Vista House. I cloned out three cars and the railing to make this look more spaceship-like.

Vista House
Located on Crown Point overlooking the Columbia River Gorge along the Historic Columbia River Parkway in Oregon, this gray sandstone structure was opened in 1918 as a stopping point for visitors.
Started the walk at Hartside Top and crossed Fiend's Fell, Little Knapside Hill and Knapside Hill in thick mist. Reaching the old Roman trackway of the Maiden Way we headed down into the Eden Valley. Below the cloud the whole of Eden was spread like a map. Lakeland like the Pennines was under cloud. Holly said she thought the view well worth a few minutes to take it all in. Her enthusiasm is apparent in the picture.
