A place I've always wanted to catch a train was the high trestle at Alta Vista and with NW 611 running the Southern Railway line I knew where I wanted to be. I almost missed the shot: I arrived later than I should have and the pedestrian walkway on the bridge was closed because of structural problems. That didn't deter the hordes of railfans though: the closed sign had been toppled over and trampled as everyone piled onto the bridge to get the shot.
I had my four-year-old son with me and that wasn't a risk I wanted to take, so I though I was going to have to skip the shot. Luckily there was a large break in vehicular traffic on the bridge, and people started using the roadway to get out mid-span. I saw the guardrail had space to stand on it, giving me a safe place to get off the roadway, so I threw my boy onto my shoulders and I took off running like a proper foamer. My fat frame, with 60lbs on my back, running 173 yards (yeah, I measured it) kicked my ass and drew chuckles from my friends as I climbed onto the guardrail, huffing and puffing. I didn't even care when the stiff wind blew the plume (and it's shadow) over the NW 611 when it arrived less than a minute later; we had made it, gotten the shot and no one plummeted to their deaths. Hurray!
Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve, San Jose, California
We are standing on a hill on the northeast edge of the Santa Clara Valley, looking towards the southern end of the San Francisco Bay as the sun sets. It is summer and the surrounding hills are their usual golden brown. A light haze floats over the valley.
I must warn the locals, however, that the Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve is indeed patrolled by at least one ranger. Despite having parked my car next to a no parking sign (given the alternatives, it seemed the safest place), we had a pleasant conversation. He seemed relieved that my car on the other side of the hill was not abandoned, that I had not jumped a fence, and that I had expressed contrition and a willingness to leave immediately.

Closed due to coronavirus, Vista House would normally be crowded on a summer Saturday. It was cloudy and calm this day, but it can get extremely windy up here.
Essa era a vista ruim que nossa cabana tinha em El Chaltén. Lembrei dessa por causa do programa do Bear Grylls hoje no Discovery.

The Rio Vista Bridge (officially the Helen Madere Memorial Bridge) is a continuous truss span with a vertical-lift bridge in the middle which carries California State Route 12 across the Sacramento River at Rio Vista, California. The present bridge was completed in 1960 and is one of several moveable bridges spanning rivers in the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. It is named after Helen Madere, who served as vice-mayor of Rio Vista. As of 2013 the bridge carries approximately 21,000 cars per day.[Wikipedia]
