On July 12th, 2021, the three-day old Moon was close to the brightest “star” in the sky - planet Venus - as seen in the western sky, an astronomical phenomenon called conjunction. These events, including the Moon and bright planets, are quite common. If you zoom a lot into the photo, you may see the much dimmer planet Mars, just to the left and a little below Venus - I could not see it with the naked eye, due to its proximity to the much brighter Venus. Of course, these three worlds were very much separated in space - at the time of this conjunction, the Moon was about 387,000 Km away from the Earth, Venus was about 214 million Km and Mars about 372 million Km away. And a little above and to left of the Moon, the star named Regulus (The Lion’s heart) lies at 78 light years away or about 2 billion times further than the Moon! Better to stop these calculations…enjoy your summer!

This is the beautiful light show in Paso Robles by the artist Bruce Munro. I really, really liked it. It's extended until June 2020 due to it's popularity.
The Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States in North Carolina and South Carolina. It catches its prey—chiefly insects and arachnids—with a trapping structure formed by the terminal portion of each of the plant's leaves, which is triggered by tiny hairs on their inner surfaces.
Thanks for your visit and taking the time to comment so I can visit your photos, too... very much appreciated! My apologies if I cannot reply to all the comments. Have a great day!

Venus de Milo, es una de las estatuas más representativas del período helenístico de la escultura griega, y una de las esculturas más famosas de la antigua Grecia. Fue creado en algún momento entre 130 a.C. C. y 100 a. C., y se cree que representa a Afrodita, diosa del amor y la belleza.
Esta estatua fue encontrada en Milo (Cícladas) desenterrada por un campesino y vendida a Francia entre 1819 y 1820.
The view from Zabriskie Point is no less stunning after dark. As last month’s super moon illuminates the foreground, Venus is seen setting over the alien horizon right in front of the faint, but visible, milky way.
OK heres a veiw of Venus from Hobgoblins playground. A quick pain tjob on the ground and Venus in the distance. A great night with other lightpainters for the LPWA meetup in Nevada

From the 'not so breaking news' table this was taken 8th Nov.
Quite something to see them so close together. I find it hard to capture that in a photo.
Twilight arrives with the Belt of Venus rising above the eastern horizon. The blue horizontal band is the shadow of Earth below the line of pink formed by light filtering through the long path of Earth’s atmosphere. This was the view I had from my campsite near Eccles Pass in the Gore Range on a backpacking trip earlier this summer. The peaks in the distance are (l to r) Whale Peak (13078 ft / 3986 m), Mount Guyot (13,376 / 4,077 m), and Boreas Mountain (11,481 ft / 3,499 m).
The Gore Range is named for Lord St. George Gore, who traveled from his native Ireland to western America in the 1850’s slaughtering thousands of animals for “sport,” leaving many of the carcasses to rot rather than killing and consuming only what could be eaten. A move is underway to rename many of the peaks and ranges in Colorado whose names pay tribute to a mix of miscreants in its history (e.g. Mount Evans was named for the territorial governor John Evans who helped instigate the Sand Creek massacre of Southern Arapaho and Cheyenne). A proposal is being considered to rename the Gore Range to the Nuchu Range to pay tribute to the Ute people who inhabited the mountains at the time of Euro-American settlement. Nuchu is the name the Utes use for themselves.
