Last year's wildfire utterly wiped out the sage in the US Route 2 area of Moses Coulee. It will take decades to recover.

It happened over Labor Day Weekend, when intense 70+mph winds carried the fire from the Columbia River to the highway, burning over 350 square miles of land.

This, along with the Cold Springs fire across the river, burned tribal, federal, state and private land. Everyone suffered here.

This was my first visit to the land since the fire, and it was like nothing I had ever seen before. I had been to Moses Coulee countless times before, but this looked empty, like a moonscape.

The Coleville Reservation lost the most, with 78 homes being destroyed. A family camping along the Columbia lost a small child to the blaze.

It's unknown how the fires started, though it's very unlikely they were from natural causes.

This has to be one of the most surreal places on earth. The icebergs are formed in the ice lagoon across the road and they eventually drift down to the ocean and onto the beach. This year there is so much more ice than my previous visit February last year. There was almost too much ice to get a clean shot. This was the best I could manage given the hour I had to spend there before nightfall arrived.

The ice is just amazing, some sparkle due to its clarity and others less so but all have something to offer the landscape photographer. You have to be careful of the waves crashing on the shore as always but what a fantastic experience.

Have you visited this beach and if so, what was your experience?

When I begun to process this exposure bracketing, I thought that I knew what I wanted to attain. I was perfectly wrong. Indeed, these RAW files kept a few secret bits of beauty which I was not aware of when I selected them for processing – and they changed the course of the journey I had foreordained.

I was in a gloomy mood, for both personal and general concerns, and the RAWs looked rather duller than the average – taken: they appeared to accurately mirror the state of my soul. At worst, I would have wasted some hours of pointless procesing work before deciding to look for something better. Nobody would have known. However things were to contradict my expectations. I got some good news (a rarity in those tough days) about the health conditions of my brother and my “adopted brother-in-law” (i.e. my brother’s brother-in-law); on the other hand, Darktable – that wonderful software – gifted me with a few unanticipated treasures. My thoughts were growing more and more positive and the processing of this bracketing were proceeding accordingly: a hidden beauty was unfolding before me, my own persisting unawareness of it notwithstanding. At last I found myself with a picture that had apparently self-processed itself*, while I was busy exploring uncharted thoughts that kept emerging along the way

* Admittedly a bizarre phenomenon, which Maurits Cornelius Escher would have loved – think of his Drawing hands.

I would avoid to nag you about this incredibly wonderful location: you can take a look at my album Silent banks, the complete collection of the photos I have taken there; the attached narratives are rich in information about the place, if you are curious enough.

This location is especially renowned for its legendary morning mists, but only a thin layer of milky mist floated above the water that morning. On top of the hill in the distance, beyond the river, lays the sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca ( = Madonna of the Rock), already brushed by the first light pouring from the Eastern horizon.

I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.7/0/+1.7 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then, as usual, I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic as a possible final contribution to the processing. While this technique (which, its imposing name notwithstanding, is pretty simple to implement) often holds interesting results in full daylight landscapes, its effects on a low-light capture (e.g. a sunrise) are utterly unpredictable, so at the end of my workflow I often give it a try to ascertain its possibilities. In this picture I have exploited this technique in a very frugal, yet effective, way – just some touches where needed.

RAW files has been processed with Darktable. Denoising with DFine 2 and the Gimp (denoised and original images blended by lightness).

Nothing better than nerding out or being utterly still in shock at how bad the movie choice was! And yet, there is no better time than these moments when we share something, and we're on the same wavelength! ♥

Explore 10/15/25. Utterly extraordinary. This spot has not seen standing water in 50 years. But a deluge the previous month brought badly needed rain -- Morocco had been in the grip of a 6-year drought -- and flash floods that pooled at the foot of Erg Chebbi, sand dunes in eastern Morocco. 28 people were killed by flooding in the mountains after an extratropical cyclone brought a year's worth of rain in 2 days. The flood was 7 weeks before; in that time, a stand of Phragmites has sprung up and flowered along the edge of the basis. Did seeds really remain viable from 50 years before? Or could they have been carried downstream with the waters? Or grown here in previous years with lesser rains, or been supported by a groundwater spring?

Utterly love the Fantasy Faire and this year was no exception.

Yes, I'm still focused on simple and pure black & white... but damn if the sublime wet plate series isn't going to seduce me.

🍁 SKINDUSTRIAL BODYWORKS – Autumn Crown & Earrings 🍁

There’s something utterly poetic about the way fall adorns itself in colors of surrender — amber, rust, and gold — as though nature herself is undressing beneath the fading light. I wanted to capture that fleeting beauty, and what better way than through this Autumn Crown and Earrings set by SKBW (Skindustrial Bodyworks).

Each curve and petal of this ensemble feels alive — hand-sculpted leaves burnished with sunset tones, soft petals kissed by gold light, and slender stems that whisper of the forest floor. The earrings cascade like delicate vines, wrapping the face in the hues of maple, chestnut, and saffron. When I wear them, I feel as though I carry the spirit of the woodland — mysterious, sensual, and unapologetically wild.

Historically, crowns of foliage and floral garlands trace back to Greco-Roman festivals — symbols of abundance, fertility, and devotion to the seasons. This modern reinterpretation embraces that same ancient femininity, but with the allure of high fashion — the fusion of nature’s artistry and couture precision.

The Autumn Crown & Earrings are fully compatible with all major mesh heads and bodies — including Lelutka Evo X, Genus, AK ADVX, and Belleza, ensuring a perfect fit for your autumn look.

Now exclusively available at the SWANK November “Fall into Autumn” Event:

And as Coco Chanel once said,

“Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions — and nature, after all, is the greatest designer of them all.”

Goldcrest is back, every Autumn at least one of these tiny birds comes to me feeders.

It examines the various piles of wood, looking for insects and pecks at the Utterly Peanut Buttery that I sprinkle around a conifer.

They're quite noisy little birds so you always know when they're around.

ChiMia made some utterly gorgeous high detail but low prim furniture so I had to grab it - the chair detail was so insanely realistic I wanted to touch it, but alas, pixels. You can see the chair out on display at the Engine Room event, together with the fireplace and gothic desk. Also don't ask about the cats. They do what they want.

lots of Coal Tits in the garden at the moment, found some feathers yesterday so I guess the Sparrowhawks are picking them off. Not much of a meal but if you're hungry and there are lots of them!

I have a lot of birds coming to feed but not a lot of variety. I fill the feeders with fresh seed every day and the six Pheasants who are my current charges finish off and uneaten seed from the day before.

One thing that always gets eaten on the day is the Utterly Peanut Buttery - that lasts half a day no matter how much I put out.

The Treecreeper comes to the feeding are for the Utterly Peanut Buttery mix. I put it into gaps in the tree.

It's also a favourite of the Goldcrest and I sprinkle tiny bits onto a potted Christmas Tree that stands next to this Sycamore.

The treecreeper decided the small bits on the conifer were ideal and was hopping back and forwards.

they love the Utterly Peanut Buttery and can collect the tiny bits other birds drop or leave in the feeder holes.

I have two coming in the feed, I think this is a female the other has the brighter orange head stripe.

Ardnamurchan is widely considered by many who visit it to be one of the most stunning natural parts of the Scottish coast.

It is beautiful, utterly wild and unspoilt.

"I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD. I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD." Zefanja 1:2-3

This location was about as far as we got along the south coast, actually already being the south-east here. It is utterly amazing there and very dramatic with lava cliffs being pounded by the waves, black sand beaches, lava sea stacks and rocks, steep mountains and meadows in between. I would have loved to spend more time there… maybe next time…

The waves were high and powerful when they crashed on the beach. I had to keep a good distance! Once in a while the sun would peek between the clouds and it illuminated the salt water sprays caused by the crashing waves. Wow, I just had to catch that! And at the same time the crashed waves should be on their way back of course, creating these nice lines on the black sand…

I reached for my filters and wireless remote to time my shooting. I inserted the battery in the transmitter but in all excitement I placed it in the wrong way. Stupid? Yes! But what was worse was that it started frying my transmitter…??! Never before have I seen a wrongly inserted battery that produced an electric current?? I noticed my mistake when some smoke rose from my transmitter and the damage was already done… A dramatic coast in many ways… ;-)

I quickly switched to my wired remote and started taking exposures, in between cleaning the salt spray from my 3-stopper filter and camera. When the sun was there the light was difficult to catch, but after several tries I ended up with this final image showing all the features of the scene that I wanted in it…

Back home I contacted Hahnel in Ireland about my wireless remote and they are checking the broken transmitter right now… I’m curious what they’ll say. They might fix or replace it which would be really good service!

An utterly insane sunrise on the morning of May 5th 2020. Image has had perspective correction and very little other editing. This is essentially as it appeared.

On one of the potted Conifers I have in the feeding area. Crumbled Utterly Peanut Buttery gets sprinkled on and the birds pick at it.

I must say I was utterly and pleasantly surprised to see this juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron (thanks Google for ID) just sitting on a tree next to the pond in a very crowded park in the middle of the day. So glad I had my camera with me and that the bird was at a relatively short distance from me so I could take a decent sharpness photo on my vintage prime 50 lens.

No matter what they are doing, they can't help being utterly adorable.

For a while, you can’t quite believe this thing has happened. The absolute horror of it was something there were no words for. It seemed utterly impossible, like a natural disaster that lasts for multiple years that was somehow chosen again purposefully or like a whole country choosing an abuser and giving him ultimate power over all of us.

I didn’t know if I was ever going to even post a photo again. I didn’t sleep on the night of the election and I still had to go to work the next day. I have to be stronger than I actually am. I have to at least pretend in a way that might garner an Oscar performance as the main protagonist in the ongoing story of my life. Because, I feel like I am falling apart. The first student I saw on Wednesday morning was a fifth grader who I know was very hopeful Kamala would win. I couldn’t speak because I was so emotional but gave her a hug instead. Now, she’s growing up in a world where she will have no body autonomy. It is so hard to process the election when you are in front of others and have to function as if the world is still in a full state of rotation.

I took two Ibuprofen PM on Wednesday night so that I could fall asleep and, on Thursday, when I initially woke up, it was like my brain was in a bit of a fog and forgot all about what happened. As if, maybe it was all just a passing night terror. And then, it hit me all over again and it was somehow even worse that day. Like, when you find yourself distracted by something beautiful and then you quickly remember the overall reality right now that you are faced with. I managed to put my clothes on and then started weeping into my coffee before biking to work.

I feel sorry for my students the most. For the past few yeas, I have felt so terrible about climate change in the world and how it is changing and now we have someone in office who will do far more damage in this and other respects. His first plans are to abolish the Department of Education and the FDA. Environmental protections will fall by the wayside. Medicare will be privatized. Money for people with disabilities will be cut or eliminated and birth control will either be eliminated or very expensive and hard to get depending on where you live. Forget about human rights for those who are transitioning genders or who are nonbinary. He is of a limited mind and feels strongly that there are only two genders in existence (despite many centuries across the world of multiple genders). He plans on even deporting the citizens who may have voted for him. These are his actual plans in writing and he controls all three branches of our government *and* has declared he now has a mandate. So, I really don’t feel I am over-reacting. In fact, I was told I was over-reacting the first time he was in office and that Roe v. Wade would never be overturned. So, I guess maybe my fears are pretty realistic. I also want to be clear that I will not entertain any right wing, pro-Trump fascist comments on here. If you are in that category, your viewpoints are harmful to people I care about and now you are the ones in power. When you have respect for others, that means you don’t wish for policies that do extreme damage to their lives and vote for politicians to act out all of your fears, hatred, and ignorance. If you voted for Trump, I already know what your opinions are and they are responsible for destroying my county. We’ve let a group of famous billionaires (we all knew enough about to be cautious) join forces to define policies that will control us and I doubt the price of groceries will go down any time, either.

I’m going to try to write a little bit each day on my life experiences from now on. I don’t expect others to care or read it. If you do, that’s ok. If you don’t, you’re busy. Some days, it might be more about a film I’ve watched, a book I’m reading, a dream I’ve had or what music I have been listening to and how that is affecting me. Other days, it might just be a poem. There might be days I am just too devastated to lift my head up and navigate an unwieldy language around incomprehensible things. I have been encouraged by someone in my family to figure out a way to fly under the radar so to speak in terms of my strong opinions. This is the opposite of that and I carry this forward with a sense of anxiety yet also human responsibility. I have been so depressed I am not sure there is anything left in this world worth living for but I am definitely not going to live out whatever time I have left being silent.

Note: the above title is from a Mission of Burma song that you can listen to here:

I have reduced the amount of Utterly Peanut Buttery I put out because the Sparrowhawks where hiding by those feeders and picking the birds off.

I have one hollow log right next to the hide where there is hedge cover and the Blackbird came to test it out.

We have so few hedgerow birds here so the Sparrowhawks have no where else to go. I did put ' day old chicks' that falconers use, out but they ignore them.

I'm trying to get a balance so all birds can survive.

Completely and utterly abandoned single track road that lead along amidst rugged rocky hills with occasional view onto the Norwegian Sea. The solitude was so absolute for a long time that I really felt like having gone to Mars :)

Black-and-red Broadbill

Cymbirhynchus macrorhynchos

Utterly unmistakable inhabitant of waterside and riverine lowland evergreen forests, mangroves, and plantations. Midnight black with long white slashes on each wing, wine-red underparts, and a black chinstrap. Bulbous bill is glowingly powder-blue with warm tinges of orange and greenish-yellow. During the breeding season, the pendulous nests of this species can be quite obvious, hanging over forested waterways. Voice is nasal and generally unpleasant-sounding, consisting of odd low mechanical rasps.(credit: ebird.org)

I am utterly devastated to have to share the news of my beautiful, most photographed boy's passing after an illness.

Azizi came into my life weighing just 49g and I threw myself into helping him gain weight as he wasnt eating and was full of mites. He was just a tiny bundle of quills but oh, SO friendly and so curious about everything. He was no trouble with his exotic vet. He took everything in his stride (which was just as well as he was hand fed for about 6 months). He was clearly a fighter. With a lot of love and care, he gained weight and as soon as I picked the little boy up, he would start to dribble in anticipation of being fed. He loved to be hand fed. Even in the last few years when I didnt have to do it, he would still come out of his hide to greet me and be hand fed a morio worm.

and how photogenic he was! He was without a doubt my most photographed tenrec and he loved to toddle up to my lens.

I am heartbroken. I found him last weekend with his mouth bleeding and the vets quickly found out he hadnt been bitten by Boo but he had broken both his front teeth. We werent able to stop the bleeding and whilst he was put back on hand feeds with a tiny syringe, he started to shut down and he passed away on friday. I keep thinking about what I could have done better to save him. It's horrendous.

Goodnight my tiny warrior. I'm so so sorry I couldnt save you this time. I'm going through hell working out what I could do to hold you in my hands once more. A tiny Tenrec that was so so loved. Rest in peace xxxxx

We had a twelve hour rainfall yesterday and it was followed by another couple of hours of light misty rain that left everything outside utterly drenched - including this yellow Hibiscus, which stood out boldly even under heavy grey skies. Apparently, the flower is native to Hawaii and is the state flower. It's also listed as endangered in the US, which seems a bit strange as my wife picked this one up from Home Depot.

I haven't been around on Flickr for a while due to a busy life and losing my mojo for photography. This was a shot taken at Butterley Reservoir in Derbyshire last week. Hope to catch up with you all very soon! The title is a play on an advert for margarine which used the term Utterly Butterley!

"Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." •

Sometimes someone walks into your life and everything just works; it's effortless, organic and right from the very first exchange - making it obvious why everything and everyone else didn't work.

From day one you've made me smile, laugh until I cry, my heart flutter and given me the freedom to be myself, always. I craved your Dominace the moment I felt it's embrace, and I am forever grateful and happy that we're on this journey together.
