Portugal's development and utilization of the Caravel ship indeed played a significant role in the Age of Discovery. The Caravel was a versatile and maneuverable vessel that enabled Portuguese explorers like Vasco da Gama and Bartolomeu Dias to navigate long distances across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Its design, which included a combination of square and lateen sails, allowed for greater speed and agility, making it well-suited for exploration and long sea voyages. This technological advancement greatly expanded Portugal's maritime reach and facilitated their exploration and trade ventures, ultimately contributing to the Age of Discovery.
Arguably, the Brazilian Carnival could be historically traced to the period of the Portuguese Age of Discoveries when their caravels passed regularly through Madeira, a territory which already celebrated emphatically its carnival season, and where they were loaded with goods but also people and their ludic and cultural expressions who then lend them to what would become the biggest cultural manifestation in modern Brazil
Traditionally the most popular origin myth theory for the name of the Carnaval festival traces itself to its placement on the Advent calendar in relation to the season of Lent which itself related to the lunar calendar.
“The origin of the word "carnival" is often traced back to the Latin phrase "carne vale," which translates to "farewell to meat." It refers to the tradition of consuming meat before the fasting period of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday in the Christian calendar. The carnival season, therefore, became a time of indulgence, celebration, and feasting before the period of abstinence during Lent. Over time, the word "carnival" came to be associated with the festive events and parades that take place during this pre-Lenten period in many cultures around the world. “
The Catholic Church determines Carnaval by determining the date for Easter and thus Ash Wednesday which follows Shrove or Fat Tuesday and thus this is the most likely theory for the name “Carnival”
Some scholars believe that the word has roots in ancient pagan festivals celebrating the end of winter and the arrival of spring, where feasting and revelry were common. While the "farewell to meat" explanation is the most widely accepted, the exact origin of the term "carnival" remains somewhat debated among historians and linguists.
The date of Easter is determined based on a lunar calendar and follows a slightly different calculation than fixed-date holidays. It falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox (March 21st). This means Easter can fall on any Sunday between March 22nd and April 25th. The determination of the date involves both astronomical and ecclesiastical considerations and has been established by tradition rather than by any specific commandment in the Bible.
The date for Carnival's "Fat Tuesday," also known as Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras, is determined based on the date of Easter. Fat Tuesday always falls on the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. Since Easter moves each year based on lunar and ecclesiastical calculations, Fat Tuesday also shifts accordingly. It typically occurs between early February and early March, depending on when Easter falls in that particular year.
The dates for Carnival (Fat Tuesday) from 2025 to 2035:
- 2025: February 25th
- 2026: February 17th
- 2027: February 9th
- 2028: February 29th
- 2029: February 13th
- 2030: March 5th
- 2031: February 25th
- 2032: February 10th
- 2033: February 22nd
- 2034: February 14th
- 2035: March 6th
These dates are based on the Western Christian calendar and the calculation of Easter, which determines the date of Carnival's "Fat Tuesday."

I utilized day 6 of my free 15 day Viveza trial to take care of the ridiculous dynamic range in this backyard. Exposed for... nothing really, somewhere in between the near-black tree shadows, and the explosive cement highlights. This is quite a testament to Viveza's use for recovering exterior shots. I still haven't mastered it inside though.
I should have moved the chair, so you could see the fire pit... damn.
When utilizing digital methods to research such social phenomena as slavery and other forms of dehumanization, we face a sort of ontological crisis. How do we prevent re-objectifying marginalized humans while reducing them, as a matter of course, to computational attributes?
In a lunchtime lecture on March 14, 2018, Frederick C. Staidum Jr (Department of English) discussed the successes and challenges of digitally mapping the shared topographies of slavery and tourism in antebellum New Orleans. He shared insights regarding his embrace of an autoethnographic sensibility, which opens new interpretative possibilities and more effectively grapples with the human in Digital Humanities.

Utilizing the platform of Skype, students at Ambo University in Ethiopia and students at St. Augustine University in Tanzania (EL Fellow Mickie Donan) were able to videoconference with each other, using image as well as sound to share ideas, ask questions, and learn about the educational, societal, and political situations in each respective country. The students came away from this particular lesson with an expanded worldview, not only in terms of English language acquisition, but perhaps more importantly, with learned cultural knowledge about a country which shares many of the same struggles as Ethiopia.

The project utilized artistic processes to unravel the ecological impact and human rights violations inherent in hardware production. The goal was to raise awareness and generate knowledge on alternative commodity chains for hardware production. Following principles of de-growth, it called for decentralized, ethical and sustainable forms of manufacturing electronics. Building on their expertise in queering technology, the artists aimed to decolonize technology using feminist hacking principles.
Eco-feminist decolonial hardware
It is an open secret that the hardware in our smart devices contains not only plastics but also conflict minerals. We investigated locally sourced alternative hardware from an eco-feminist perspective to demystify global commodity-chains. We call it Feminist Hardware! Feminist hardware is developed without mining in harmful ways, environmentally friendly, under fair working conditions, manufactured from ubiquitously available materials, without generating e-waste, with consent, love and care.

Tetrometroes utilizes the strict road system that makes up Manhattan and uses it as a stage for play, creating the world's largest Tetris board.
It is a comment on the mundane uniformity that makes up Manhattan. Unlike older cities New York's main island lacks the intricacy that allows one to get lost and really experience a city. This makes it seem cold and predictable to many.
The name Tetrometroes derives from tetrominoes, the geometric shapes composed of four squares connected orthogonally that make up Tetris pieces.
Drawing extends 720 city blocks and covers 38.18 miles. It was conceived using Google Earth and carried out using a mobile phone GPS.
The city is a playground.
The practice of taking photographs outdoors is known as nature photography. It has images of various things, including landscapes, animals, and plants. I opted particularly to photograph plants for my project because I wanted to put most of what I had learned so far into practice. As opposed to the third photo, which features great depth of field, the first two show a type of photograph called shallow depth of field. I wanted to take a picture of anything that utilized two colors for the fourth photo. Finally, with the fifth image, I wanted to show how the flowers and leaves overlapped.
