Sketchnote of a talk by Janne Jul Jensen (@jjjtrifork) titled 'But How? Methods and Techniques to Making a Good User Interface' at GOTO Zurich in April 2013. Janne is an Interaction Designer at Trifork in Denmark. Her talk was aimed at developers and provided loads of practical tips. I was really impressed that Janne was able to clearly explain such a wide range of UX methods in under 1 hour!
Some time ago a squad of mathaholics at Northwestern's Research on Complex Systems group used data from www.wheresgeorge.com to map a delineation of national communities, using the physical movement of dollar bills from county to county to feed a "stochastic Monte Carlo" (semi-random process with different results every time, run over and over again) algorithm that categorizes U.S. Counties into "effective communities." When run a thousand times, predominant lines begin to emerge, indicating boundaries of fluctuating strength. What a great way to crowd source out pragmatic economic zones.
Gestalt theories are a tool behavioural experts can use to predict how a user’s visual system will respond in front of a screen.
Today, let’s discover the fifth of a total of seven principles and talk about the law of symmetry.
A set of shapes will be better perceived when the individual elements are symmetrical.

"Elastic lists allow to navigate large, multi-dimensional info spaces with just a few clicks, never letting you run into situations with zero results. They enhance traditional UI approaches for facet browsers by visualizing weight proportions, animated transitions, emphasis of characteristic values and sparkline visualizations."

Irrational Studios is a specialised user experience, information design and branding studio.
Our primary client, Travelstart, is expanding to 15 countries in 2007 and we need some extra help handling the design roll-out.
We found this quote from Terry Irwin about hiring designers. It rings very true for Irrational Studios too:
"It was always a useful litmus test for interviewing prospective designers to put a 1040 Income Tax Form on the desk and ask them how they would like to redesign it. If their eyes glazed over or they broke out in a cold sweat, I knew it wasn't likely to be a good fit."
So to paraphrase: if you're not passionate about making complex information understandable and meaningful to human beings, please don't apply!
You'll be responsible for:
- Design of promotional material for both print and web within brand guidelines (business cards, competition updates, email signatures, wine labels, signage, newsletters, web banners etc)
- Maintenance work on the 15 international Travelstart websites (everything from preparing images to rolling out templates)
- Assisting with daily studio tasks
We know it's not glamourous, but the position offers the opportunity to learn in an environment where best practices in UX and Info Design are being implemented for a successful international online business.
