One of the problems you may run into when designing basement master bedrooms is finding enough natural light to make the room comfortable.

Very useful chippy near the railway station at Penzance just five minutes walk up Adelaide Street, one of the side streets. Open 4-8 and closed Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday. Usual caveats. Chips, mushy peas and a bread roll for me all eaten on the train home.

These are photos of geeks and other things from our trip to Israel.

Thanks to @sorden I know am following ArizonaDOT - Department of Transportation which is now tweeting accidents and highway closures.

I am trying getting these tweets via SMS - the message above would have helped a few days ago when I got stuck in a highway closure on the Beeline Highway near the Slate Creek pass-- I would have known the road was closed

There's only a few spots on Highway 87 where I get signal nothing past the exit for Four Peaks until just past Sunflower, then over the pass, nothing until the AZ 188 junction, and then nothing until Payson.

Last year before Xmas I imported this very handy and useful notepad from Raymay Fujinishi, one of the major stationery manufacturer in Japan. The series is called zeitVektor, featuring Leather, Synthetic Leather and Paper Cloth lines. Most of the products in this series is portable small stuffs, I particularly like this notepad, which you can either use zeitVektor's original notepad refill or just fit a Rhodia as you wish

The shape of the pad is quite interesting, differ from a normal pad, it's curved on both length. At first glance it looked a bit larger than necessary, but I figured it could still fit into shirt and jean pocket, having a little twist on a pad's shape is actually refreshing, besides you can rest a pen nicely beside the notepad.

I also like the elastic band which fixes the pages tightly so when you write at the bottom of the page, the paper won't slip and it also protects the papers from folding when you put the whole pad in your pocket.

Another useful feature is a small pocket on the back which allows you to put several name cards or act as a temporary storage for notes.

The price of synthetic leather version is quite reasonable and you have 6 colors to choose from. You can even match with some of the other products in this line including A4 writing pad cover and document holder.

I personally like the orange color, which is less boring than black and adds energy to the office. I now put this little pad right beside my office telephone to jot down quick todo notes after conversations. It is where I collect todo inputs and later transfer to my main todo in GTD practice.

Scenes from the Great Falls and historical Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, in Paterson, NJ.

Our apartment had stupid kitchen cabinets, so it's great to have somewhere to put all the regular and irregular glassware that is both accessible and free of dust.

Useful to have AWD this morning on Mill Hill, as last night's snow had turned to ice. Not having winter tyres meant I was wary of going to the top of Truleigh Hill, where the lying snow was a bit deeper.

Useful beta photo for a Gordon Trail trip up to Caramba Camp. Bob Foes recommends long sleeves and long pants (denim) and gloves because the brush is hideous.

10 Days at Andreas Fall 2008 - After walking off the plane in the late afternoon light on Thursday, I stopped on the tarmac to simply stare up at the mountains that tower above the Coachella Valley. I've seen this view many times, but it's always breathtaking. The San Jacintos rise 8000' in 5 miles, making it one of the steepest escarpments in the 48 states. (I seem to recall reading that it's a 10,000' rise in 4 miles, but I can't find that on the map. It looks to me to take 7 miles to rise 10,000'.)

Michelle and Zane met me at the airport. We went grocery shopping and then headed up the hill for the rest of the 3-day weekend. The highs that weekend were ~35°C, making it wonderful swimming weather. On Saturday Zane and I motivated enough to climb Eagle Peak before it got too hot. Those two drove off Sunday evening after a fun, relaxing weekend.

The following morning I got up early and had one of my longest cycling days ever: Palm Springs to Banning to Idyllwild to Palm Desert and back to Palm Springs. I was so tired on the way back that I somehow rode right by Trader Joe's (without seeing it) where I wanted to stop for groceries. It might have been only my third 100-mile cycling day, and of those three it was the shortest and flattest, but still was close to 110 miles and 9000 ft of climbing. The low and high points of the ride are 6000' different! That's more than the Triple Bypass. Also, as I was warned, the headwind from the tram turnoff to Banning was ferocious. Like everyone else :) I recommend doing this loop clockwise (next time...).

On my rest day I visited the Indian Canyons. Then I got another early start on Wednesday and rode the Palms and Pines Highway from Palm Desert. That's a great climb though the road is narrow in places and there's a fair bit of traffic, even on a weekday. My out and back ride was about 70 miles and ~7000 ft of climbing, enough to make me sleep well.

Mom and Dad arrived that night and dragged me out to dinner at Mirasol in Palm Springs. By the time we headed out, I think I was ready to sleep. The next few days were relaxing, and it was good to meet/see a bunch of folks at the ACC annual meeting.

It's not like me to make thigns that are functional and useful but these really are. I must be growing up or something.

At a loss for words? One of these useful phrases is sure to fit your situation. How about "She flounders like a huge conger-eel in an ocean of dingy morality"?

I was on a useful thread with some of my homesteading buddies earlier

this year. The discussion was about hacking chest freezers to be

refrigerators. Just swap out the thermostat with a $16 part and you

are done. My uber expensive energy star fridge/freezer sucks about

1.6kWhrs a day. That is disgusting when I could have bought a $200

chest freezer with a $16 thermostat modification and use only .1kWhrs

a day (16 times less energy per day). Tomorrow you could go and vote,

or you could do a real favor and hack a chest freezer so you stop

gobbling up so much juice. Some links:

As a Tailwind owner/restorer I find this forum incredibly useful and

impressive considering the wealth of knowledge and experience represented by

its participants. Other times, as with most public venues, I am equally

impressed by the misinformation, half truths and conjecture bandied about as

fact.

The Beechcraft Starship, associated with Space Ship One flights is not owned

by Scaled Composites but rather by an individual, Robert Scherer

rps3.com/Pages/Starship.htm who makes himself and his aircraft

available to Scaled and is a frequent visitor to Mojave. According to

Scherer, there remain five airworthy examples of the Starship in the

possession of private operator's. He has amassed a spares inventory to

support his Starship for his lifetime and beyond. Hardly the mark of a

dissatisfied owner. Other owners were incentivized to surrender their

aircraft by replacement with more "conventional" types from the Beech line.

The motivation for this action by Beech is a complicated, multifaceted story

which, in the end, only makes for mildly interesting hangar conversation

dependant mostly on emotion, speculation, and what we choose to believe.

Cost, performance, sustained liability, new technology management and

development, and differences in executive management regimes at Beech, among

other things, played a part in the aircraft's ultimate fate.

Anyone who relates the Wright Flyer to modern canard aircraft performance

and flying qualities is simply exhibiting his or her lack of aeronautical

acumen as they are anything but one and the same. 20th Century Wright Flyer?

Hardly.

I find wonder in both conventional and unconventional aircraft and accept

them on the merit of their performance within a niche - Tailwinds and canard

types alike, as all are a compromise. I might also note for your

consideration that there are more similarities than differences between

Wittman and Rutan than one might perceive at first glance. By the way, I am

not affiliated with Beechcraft, Scaled Composites, Rutan, Scherer or anyone

else mentioned in this thread.

I'm going to Feltham Station from London Heathrow airport so it should take about 26 minutes. It took longer because there were "road works" (construction) and "queuing [was] likely" (expect delays).

The new Deep Green Dorm provides a beautiful and useful living space for dozens of Berea College students who care about sustainability. Photo taken August 22, 2013.

In preparation for some down time this past week we decided to hit the road for another useful "on The Road" shoot. Our destination was Gays Mills WI to collect some of their wonderful apples.

This series will be a bit of a mixed bag. We headed out on a norther route across Iowa catching as much back country as we could. We crossed the Mississippi at Lansing IA on a steel girder suspension bridge. Next wandered around the glacial drift-less area of Wisconsin until we arrived at the orchards. The return trip followed much the same plan in revers, although we tried to mix the route up some.

To accomplish this all in a day we start out as the sun was coming up and returned as it was setting. This led to the usual problem of having to shoot into the sun both directions. Otherwise it all went well and I came back with 32G+ worth of pictures to sort through. Got some great apples also

This first set is an early sun. Many great silhouettes and other unique shots into a red sun.

Enjoy

"A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to- hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with."
