Pharmacological research has shown that the essential oils and extracts from D. viscosa (yellow fleabane) possess a variety of biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, and antioxidant properties.
This is another one of those what-do-you-do-with-bad-weather images. We traveled to Bandon. The weather for photos stunk. Fog is cool, and useful, but a total fog in is not cool or useful. So what to do? Into the caves! There are lots of sea caves at Bandon. The tripod was key here because there was not much light. I bracketed this to get more range but did not end up needing it. I am not a video guy but the effect here made wish I was, the fog was rolling into the cave in these cool blankets. Made it tricky to shoot. Anyway, always head for the light, even if it gets your feet wet. Enjoy.
For "Macro Mondays" Group theme "Vibrant Minimalism"
It is useful to have an idea as the basis for trying out something, and the MM weekly challenge is providing this for me this week.
Firstly, this is an attempt to get a seamless table-top and back-drop - aiming to get rid of a horizon. I've used a piece of coarse felt material and the result looks promising.
Secondly, I'm looking at the capabilities of the minute lenses produced for the Pentax 110 SLR film camera made over 40 years ago. Here I'm trying the 50mm again and as expected needed an extension ring to get down to the 3 inch limit of MM. The result has a certain charm and not quite the 'bite' I might have got from a 'better' vintage or a more modern digital lens. I'm not displeased though.
Thirdly, I was trying to get a sharper and more defined shadow of the pin - the rather coarse felt hasn't helped here, but it's better than my first attempt.

one of the views from Rachel's Knoll, Sedona, arizona
After Rachel's death in 2001, the property that the Knoll sits on was sold to Seven Canyons, but with provisions to allow visitors to the site on an ongoing basis. Originally the buyers did not follow through on these provisions, but because of diligent work by Rachel's children and their lawyer, the courts have now declared that Seven Canyons must comply
Imagine the pristine beauty due west of Sedona with nothing but magnificent red rock formations in all directions. For many years, residents of Sedona were allowed to use a very special place in this extraordinary area. It was found on private property in the Long Canyon area and was owned by a woman named Rachel. She purchased this beautiful land, piece by piece, in the early 1970s and then made it available to the residents of Sedona, and all people from around the world.
Her property was perched high above the Long Canyon valley on a knoll which was later to be known as Rachel’s Knoll. To access her property one had to walk about half a mile meandering up a dirt road allowing ample time to experience and honor the drama and magical beauty of the land. Once on the knoll, one would find medicine wheels, seating areas, trails to guide you around to the meditative areas plus one of the most extraordinary red rock views in Sedona.
This land was most sacred to the Native Americans in the area and was used by them for centuries for their ceremonies and inspiration. Rachel knew when she entered this sacred place that it would be her goal to save it for all people so they might enjoy and honor the Native Americans who once lived there.
Very useful plants in costal regions. Their dense foliage provides excellent erosion control, shelter and nesting sites for various birds and animals, the rose hips are a food source for birds and other wildlife. It seems that beach roses play a vital role in maintaining healthy coastal ecosystems.
And they are very decorative, I think.

The species reaches a body length of 5–7 millimetres (0.20–0.28 in). Most females are slightly larger than males. In these polymorphic insects, the coloration of the body is very variable (about 20 different colors are known). Usually, they are yellowish, brownish, or black, with brighter patches on a dark background, but also with dark markings on a lighter background.
The most common modes of locomotion are running and flying, but the most striking is their strong jumping ability, which is useful for escaping from predators. When jumping, the hind leg tarsal spines and spine hairs are embedded into the material the animal is jumping from, typically a plant, and provide the purchase needed for a lateral jump - confirmed with scanning electron micrographs. X-ray spectroscopy revealed that the darker coloured sclerotized tips of the spines, the last 6/100ths of a millimetre or so, contain zinc.
Eggs are white with an orange spot; this spot becomes darker and larger if the egg is fertilised, approximately 1mm long and 0.3mm wide. The larvae, also called nymphs, hatch after about 20 days and develop through five stages, known as instars.
The larvae are well known for the self-generated foam nests which can be observed during spring in meadows (especially on cuckoo flowers, Cardamine pratensis, and broom, Genista, species). The larvae in the foam nests are largely protected from predators and also get the necessary moisture for the appropriate development and temperature, so their mortality remains low even in bad weather. The larval stage lasts about 50 days. The adults leave the foam nest only when it is completely dried. This takes about ten days. The females mate soon after.
Froghoppers are polyphagous, their host plant specificity is low, so that they can feed on a variety of plants, mainly grasses (Poaceae species), reed plants (Juncaceae species), herbs and sometimes trees (including the olive tree, where the species has been identified as spreading Xylella fastidiosa, the bacterium associated with Olive quick decline syndrome). They have been identified on over 170 host plants.
Beaver Pond, along the Vloman Kill, at the end of winter in the town of Bethlehem, located in upstate New York. Image taken with a Hasselblad Stellar (a pocket point-and-shoot camera, not a full-fledged Hasselblad) -- essentially a Sony RX100 with a fancy (but helpful) grip and Hasselblad branding. Very useful as a lightweight camera.
The best wasp pic I ever took. It was a Nikon D70 but I can't be sure of the lens because this is a crop. The opportunity to photograph these doesn't come along often, they're quite uncommon these days. One major advantage the D70 had was the ability to use flash synchronised at 400th of a second, which is extremely useful for insect photography.
Detail from a map of the south polar regions published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK) in 1830. It has only a few bits marked of what later was discovered to be the Antarctic coastline; instead, the polar region is labelled 'Antarctic Ocean'.
These are a pair of festive earring that my OH bought for me in Cardiff yesterday. Useful as photo props but useless as earrings because I haven't worn dangly earrings since we started to wear masks . I might though wear them at home for MS Cymru's Festive Zoom Quiz this coming Friday.

The Alaska Railroad, for a variety of reasons, have leased three UP SD70Ms again this summer. It is passenger season and all available power will be put to use. Freight has been heavy so the extra motors will be a useful addition to the other 4 purchased by the railroad. One of the ex-KCS units is second out numbered 4129. The two BNSF should have been released by the shops at this point increasing ARR's locomotive fleet to 55. With double barges every other week to Whittier and the south end barges running in Seward business has been predictable on the south end. Even more so now with the onset of passenger season.
Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens)
It might not be to everybody's taste but I love this picture ! The light must have been perfect because I never captured a Black Soldier Fly with so many nuances of colour ! A very useful insect.

I got a drone recently, not sure how I feel about this. Was never a big fan of drone photography as it felt like cheating or like this very overpowered tool to constantly get good looking shots without needing much skill or effort. Or maybe I'm just a hater IDK. I've had a really fun time using it to get some cinematic shots of trains and I much prefer shooting video on it rather than pictures. But today I thought I'd try to get some pics, it is useful in areas like here where there are no access to shots for a regular camera that doesn't have wings and fly. The drone camera is fixed on F1.7 so the shots will never look as crisp as shots on a regular camera but I am very surprised at the Quality produced from this drone. Will you see more drone pictures form me? Idrk maybe. What do you think? Is drone photography the best or is it another tacky tool.
