... "make yourself useful!" I decided to be a flower vase.

At the right of the photo, I have included a three-deck motor vessel, useful for understanding or intuiting the proportions …..

In fondo, sulla destra della foto , ho incluso una motonave a tre ponti, utile per capire o intuire le proporzioni …..

This is the neck of a small bottle that held a Japanese lychee soft drink. The stopper is a glass marble set in a plastic ring; you push it down and it falls into the gap between the pinched sides of the neck I think the two round indentations are for your thumbs while you push the marble down. I've been holding on to the empty bottle for months thinking it might one day be useful for a photo. In fact I have two, and one is behind the other here.

[Obviously not in Kent but maybe useful to Kent birders]

The mouth of the river Fowey has been guarded by the chapel of St. Saviour on the headland at Polruan since probably the 8th or 9th centuries. It was a prominent landmark for mariners at sea marking the entrance to the harbour. At night a beacon was lit in the tower. It also was a useful lookout point giving notice of approaching enemy ships. The original chapel was small, but possibly enlarged by Sir Richard Edgcumbe in 1488, to give thanks for the safe return of his ships after their voyage to Ireland. After 1572 it fell into disrepair following the dissolution of the monasteries. The Chapel is now an ancient monument, belonging to the people of Polruan, and preserved as an open space by the Town Trust.

Erected by Trinity House in 1832 ‘for the safety of commerce and the preservation of mariners’ the Gribbin Head daymark pinpoints the approach to Fowey’s narrow and rocky harbour entrance. At 26m tall and banded in red and white stripes, the tower stood out on the headland, ensuring that that sailors did not mistake the treacherous shallows of St Austell Bay for the deep waters of Falmouth harbour.

St Catherine’s Point Lighthouse is a short red cast iron circular tower lighthouse with a traditional light by the entrance to the Fowey estuary. Operated by the local Port Authority, the tower is 20 feet high and the light is visible for 15 miles.

On 6 September 1646, Palafox y Mendoza donated 5,000[4] of his own items to the Colegio de San Juan—which was founded by him—on the condition that they be made available to the general public.[5] He wrote that "it is very useful and convenient that there should be in this city and kingdom a public library, where all sorts of people will be able to study as they wish".[4]

The exterior facade, covered with colonial Talavera pottery

More than a century later, Francisco Fabián y Fuero ordered the construction of the premises which currently house the Biblioteca Palafoxiana. He donated his own collection, and the collections of the bishops Manuel Fernández de Santa Cruz and Francisco Pablo Vázquez and the dean of the Francisco Irigoyen Cathedral were gradually added, as were volumes from Pueblan religious schools and individuals.[4] Books confiscated from Jesuits upon their expulsion in 1767 were also added.[5]

The library was finished in 1773, consisting of a 43-meter-long vaulted hall on the Colegio's second floor. Two levels of bookshelves were built, and a retablo of the Madonna of Trapani by Nino Pisano was acquired. By the mid-19th century, the size of the collection necessitated a third level of bookshelves.

3/52 Candies - Look Close on Friday

Those of you who have ever bought anything mail order from WEX, may have received some little sweeties in with their order.

Ages back I received a few little tubes of Love Hearts, which have remained uneaten ... does anyone like them? But I knew that at some point they'd come in useful for a photo challenge :))

Not sure what this old piece of equipment is, but it seems safe to say that its useful life has expired.

Do not know what this old and forgotten place was used for but it now sits abandoned along interstate 80 in Nevada, suspect it was maybe used in mining.

Pharmacological research has shown that the essential oils and extracts from D. viscosa (yellow fleabane) possess a variety of biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, and antioxidant properties.

I think this could be smooth scouring-rush Equisetum laevigatum, a type of horsetail.

"The name [scouring-rush] refers to the rush-like appearance of the plants, and to the fact that the stems are coated with abrasive silicates, making them useful for scouring (cleaning) metal items such as cooking pots or drinking mugs, particularly those made of tin......

Rough horsetail E. hyemale is still boiled and then dried in Japan, to be used for the final polishing process on woodcraft to produce a smoother finish than any sandpaper." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equisetum

It is useful to have an idea as the basis for trying out something, and the MM weekly challenge is providing this for me this week.

Firstly, this is an attempt to get a seamless table-top and back-drop - aiming to get rid of a horizon. I've used a piece of coarse felt material and the result looks promising.

Secondly, I'm looking at the capabilities of the minute lenses produced for the Pentax 110 SLR film camera made over 40 years ago. Here I'm trying the 50mm again and as expected needed an extension ring to get down to the 3 inch limit of MM. The result has a certain charm and not quite the 'bite' I might have got from a 'better' vintage or a more modern digital lens. I'm not displeased though.

Thirdly, I was trying to get a sharper and more defined shadow of the pin - the rather coarse felt hasn't helped here, but it's better than my first attempt.

Orford Castle is a castle in Orford in the English county of Suffolk, 12 miles northeast of Ipswich, with views over Orford Ness. It was built between 1165 and 1173 by Henry II of England to consolidate royal power in the region..Built in the 12th century for Henry II, Orford Castle was intended to curtail the power of turbulent East Anglian barons, such as Hugh Bigod of nearby Framlingham Castle. Its polygonal keep was built to a revolutionary design, which is today a landmark in the Suffolk landscape. Orford Castle remained in royal hands until 1336, when it was sold by King Edward III (1327 – 1377). The castle then gradually decayed with the curtain wall collapsing and the stone lost or stolen. The tall keep survived principally because it was a useful landmark for shipping.

Found these flowers in my street by the edge of sidewalk and just stood there watching the busy bumblebees flying around, doing their thing... I thought, why can't us, people, be as them... useful, hardworking and just nice and cute at the same time, not grumpy and stressed out... Let the nature be our inspiration once again!

Having a house on stilts is a massively useful feature in the rainy season and times of flood. I imagine that the Chao Phraya River overflows its banks regularly at this point

always nice to have some shade

Very useful plants in costal regions. Their dense foliage provides excellent erosion control, shelter and nesting sites for various birds and animals, the rose hips are a food source for birds and other wildlife. It seems that beach roses play a vital role in maintaining healthy coastal ecosystems.

And they are very decorative, I think.

one of the views from Rachel's Knoll, Sedona, arizona

After Rachel's death in 2001, the property that the Knoll sits on was sold to Seven Canyons, but with provisions to allow visitors to the site on an ongoing basis. Originally the buyers did not follow through on these provisions, but because of diligent work by Rachel's children and their lawyer, the courts have now declared that Seven Canyons must comply

Imagine the pristine beauty due west of Sedona with nothing but magnificent red rock formations in all directions. For many years, residents of Sedona were allowed to use a very special place in this extraordinary area. It was found on private property in the Long Canyon area and was owned by a woman named Rachel. She purchased this beautiful land, piece by piece, in the early 1970s and then made it available to the residents of Sedona, and all people from around the world.

Her property was perched high above the Long Canyon valley on a knoll which was later to be known as Rachel’s Knoll. To access her property one had to walk about half a mile meandering up a dirt road allowing ample time to experience and honor the drama and magical beauty of the land. Once on the knoll, one would find medicine wheels, seating areas, trails to guide you around to the meditative areas plus one of the most extraordinary red rock views in Sedona.

This land was most sacred to the Native Americans in the area and was used by them for centuries for their ceremonies and inspiration. Rachel knew when she entered this sacred place that it would be her goal to save it for all people so they might enjoy and honor the Native Americans who once lived there.

From 11 june till the 25th of july, I travelled in Canada. Starting in Brighton ontario, where my sister lives at the border of an amazing part of lake Ontario, I flew to Vancouver, and Vancouver island where I took the boat at Port Hardy to take part 1 of the Inside passage, to Prince Rupert in BC. Two days later I took part 2 to Skagway in Alaska, from where i took a scenic train thorugh the Rocjies to Whitehorse and further on by car to Kluane National park in the Yukon district. Whitehorse is situated at the border of the Yukon. Frow there I flew back to Vancouver, rented a car, and travelled three weeks in the BC- and Alberta Rockies, visiting the famous, and less famous Nature parks like Banff and Jasper. Last few days back to Brighton Ontario to enjoy lake Ontario once more, before going home. A picture of my itinerary can be found on Facebook (www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152940536581759&set...).

4000 pictures later, it is quite a task to show the right stuff, although the stunning scenery garantees at least a few great shots to share. Objective will be to make a book (for myself mainly), and that might take a while.

I hope you will enjoy the impression of my travel, one that equals earlier journeys to Alaska and south America, this journey was the first in the digital era, and equally intensive because of all the hiking activities every day on and on. I loved every minute of it.

Detail from a map of the south polar regions published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK) in 1830. It has only a few bits marked of what later was discovered to be the Antarctic coastline; instead, the polar region is labelled 'Antarctic Ocean'.

War and Pieces photographed in the Dining Room at Berrington Hall, Herefordshire, a six-metre long piece, inspired by the sugar sculptures found on the tables of the wealthy in the 17th century.

The work is made of broken antique porcelain and glassware as well as parts of children's plastic toys and sugar, bringing together the notions of modern warfare and art with those of the 18th and 19th centuries to make us consider what we think beautiful or useful.

Bouke de Vries is a Dutch artist who studied fashion and textiles before retraining as an art restorer. The act of giving life back to broken artworks is what led him to explore the deconstruction of objects and how they could be given new life. War and Pieces has been exhibited worldwide and at Berrington Hall until November 2017.

The mind is like an umbrella. It's most useful when open.

Featuring some new unique, beautiful, and very useful items from Cinoe, Hive, and Vespertine.

From Cinoe the Teruteru-bozu doll. Includes a decor version and puppet version. A teru teru bōzu is a small traditional handmade doll made of white paper or cloth that Japanese farmers began hanging outside of their window by a string in hopes for good weather the following day and no rain! In shape and construction they are essentially identical to ghost dolls, such as those made at Halloween.
