Health benefits

Pears are rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, E1, copper and potassium. Pears are the least allergenic of all fruits. Because of this, it is sometimes used as the first juice introduced to infants. Along with lamb and soya formula, pears form part of the strictest exclusion diet for allergy sufferers.

Pears can be useful in treating inflammation of mucous membranes, colitis, chronic gallbladder disorders, arthritis, and gout.

Pears can also be beneficial in lowering high blood pressure, controlling blood cholesterol levels, and increasing urine acidity.

They are good for the lungs and the stomach.

Most of the fiber is insoluble, making pears a good laxative. The gritty fiber content may cut down on the number of cancerous colon polyps.

Most of the vitamin C, as well as the dietary fiber, are contained within the skin of the fruit.

A group of bushy, late flowering, herbaceous perennials with narrow green leaves covered by clouds of daisy-like flowers; either singly or in sprays. The name of this useful late flowering plant is taken is from the Latin word meaning star - indicating the shape of its showy flower heads, borne in profusion from late summer onwards.

Here's a chance shot taken in the Alabama Hills During a New Moon with Mars being at it's closest to Earth during it's orbit around our solar system. It was a very misty night which has created a cool glow around the larger participants in the sky and the foreground was lit with a commonly misunderstood technique called Low-level-Lighting, or "LLL". This is "NOT" light painting. It is a constant light source that is dimmed down and diffused until it mimics moonlight/starlight when done correctly. "Light Painting" consists of several light bursts and movements, similar to how an artist paints with acrylics. Done at given times during the exposure it is much less consistent but can give some great results, but it also requires a lot of trial and error using up valuable time. An "LLL" lighting scenario is a matter of getting the lights set up, that way you can shoot away to your hearts content. It also allows for a series of images to be captured such as those required for a panorama.

I heard Wayne Pinkston coin this term on our last photoquest and I think that it nicely differentiates the differences between the two techniques. Here, there is a small mini lantern placed behind the arch about 10ft away, There is a second light source behind me to my left at about 45 degrees oblique to the subject at a distance of around 100ft away set to it's lowest setting with 2 handkerchiefs dimming and diffusing creating some depth with shadows. This is not really creating light but more like molding shadows to illuminate and shape your scene, much like a portrait photographer in his studio.

I'm Hoping that the "LLL" terminology is adopted and photographers start using it to more accurately describe their techniques. Have you ever run a Google search on "Light Painting"? Lots of pictures of people running around with flashlights and writing their names in the air. :/ What we are doing is definitely not light painting. :-)

If you follow this Audubon link, www.audubon.org/news/its-time-rename-ring-necked-duck

you will find an "impassioned plea to name the diver for a much more obvious—and useful—field mark", i.e. the ring on its bill rather than the one on its neck. This being said, you can always find an uncooperative subject who does not care to show its bill or its neck while being photographed. :) View large for greater details.

We returned to one of our favorite borrowing owl spots. We never fail to spot burrowing Owls in Davis near a sign that says, “Burrowing Owls, drive carefully.” This little guy let us get up close and personal to capture his beautiful portrait. Burrowing Owls are very well camouflaged and amazingly small compared to the wide-open areas where they live, so a spotting scope will be useful for viewing them. You’ll need to patiently scan a likely habitat—pay special attention to dirt mounds around burrow entrances, where owls often stand when they’re not hunting, sometimes with just their head and eyes showing.

Grass snake - non-venomous, useful. Years of conservation have made it a taxon of Least Concern. Occurs all over Europe. As a cold-blooded creature, it basked in the sun. You can often meet grass snakes run over by cars, which have chosen a public road or forest path as a place to bask.

This is the canal which links the Cagliari salt evaporation ponds (now dismissed) with the harbour. The salt collected in the ponds was loaded into barges and then a tug carried the train of barges to the harbour where the salt was unloaded to be shipped.

In ancient times the barges were pulled by horses.

When I decided to photograph this cap, I imagined a high-key, minimalist feel, but it seemed to fit a more grungy low-key-white feel.

I wonder if anyone photographs this type of shot in the same disorganized manner as I tend to do, with the set-up evolving in the most disorganized and amusing manner, and a huge mess of random 'props' to put away at the end of the shoot! This shot ended up involving a small piece of kitchen roll rolled up behind the bottle cap to balance it inside the white plastic toothbrush holder, which was precariously balanced on top of a random jar, lit by a head torch fastened to a tall bottle of olive oil, and I 'stabilized' my camera on a tin of biscuits!

I combined these images with Photoshop. There are 37 eastern warblers and of those who have distinct differences between male and female I am endeavoring to combine them into one image. I have about 5 or 6 more pair sets to complete which will require more field work in subsequent springs. A fun project which I hope will prove useful to many.

I brought a peacock feather home from a visit to our local zoo because Cleo likes feathers and I hoped that it would be useful for her daily exercise. It's already good news that she doesn't just turn around and leave when I try to play with her with the feather although she makes sure that she doesn't have to move much more than her paw. Lately I found my mind wandering as we wind ourselves into the new year of 2023. I decided to do a more thoughtful pose to work with some PS tools I've neglected for far too long to get the hang of them. Maybe, hah. Working in extreme closeup made me appreciate the work put into the eyebrows and eyes by Landgraff (his Unholy eyes are really cool), the brows alone are nicely detailed down to the tiniest hair and added scar. I'm wearing Cubic Cherry's spectacles to add to the haughty look.

'it seems to me what is called for is an exquisite balance between two conflicting needs: the most skeptical scrutiny of all hypotheses that are served up to us and at the same time a great openness to new ideas … If you are only skeptical, then no new ideas make it through to you … on the other hand, if you are open to the point of gullibility and have not an ounce of skeptical sense in you, then you cannot distinguish the useful ideas from the worthless ones.' - carl sagan, (november 9, 1934 – december 20, 1996) - the burden of skepticism

These deep rooted trees survive in tough Australian arid conditions. Allocasuarina decaisneana or desert oak is a medium-sized, slow-growing tree found in the dry desert regions of the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia. The dioecious tree typically grows to a height of 10 to 16 metres and as high as 20 m and a width of 3 to 8 m. Young trees have a narrow trunk and form and grey/green feathery foliage. They mature to an adult form with spreading limbs and bushy foliage. It is the only member of its family in Central Australia and its large cylindrical cones are the biggest in its family. Often found in swales between sand dunes they grow well in deep red sand. The species is distributed through the deserts of the eastern part of central Western Australia, in the southern portion of the Northern Territory, and in northern South Australia. It is often the only tree species to be found in these area where the dominant form of vegetation is spinifex. The tree was particularly useful to Indigenous Australian peoples who used the trees as a source of water. Water can be collected from tree hollows but surface roots could also be broken off in sections to provide potable water by draining the root when held vertically or by directly sucking the water out. The Aborigines also used the hard wood of the trees for making boomerangs, shields and clubs. A boomerang that is 10,000 years old made from Allocasuarina wood was found in Wylie Swamp in South Australia. 16240

An useful way of up cycling an old tyre!

Spotted in the woods on my walk last week, this home made swing was designed and made by two 11 year old girls. And no, I didn't take up their offer of trying it out!

Acacia pycnantha, most commonly known as the golden wattle, is a tree of the family Fabaceae. It grows to a height of 8 metres and has phyllodes instead of true leaves. The profuse fragrant, golden flowers appear in late winter and spring, followed by long seed pods. Wikipedia

The golden wattle is the floral emblem of Australia with its masses of sunshine yellow balls of flowers brightening the bush and gardens in late winter to early spring. It grows from 2 to 10 metres tall and is fast growing, but sadly can be short lived. Adapts to most soils as long as they are free draining, and can take some frost and dry periods. Performs best in temperate climate zones. A useful plant- the flowers are fragrant and can be used for making perfume, the seed is edible and the bark is rich in tannins. Green seed can be cooked like peas. Ripe seed can be baked then ground with a mortar and pestle into a low glycaemic flour.

Note– this plant originates from South Australia, but has become a problem plant in some areas where it is becoming weedy and competing with the natural species. Southern Western Australia is one area where this happening. (Gardening with Angus)

Victoria and Albert Museum: Exhibitions

It is very useful being a member of the Museum. I get to see most of the exhibitions and talks free. Of course, I have to pay a membership fee but when I think of the positives, it is worthwhile. Monday 12th August I took my daughter to two exhibitions on fashion. The first being Mary Quant and the second, Christian Dior. Wasn’t quite sure if I would like them but I did and we had a great day out. They were both brilliant exhibitions. Fortunately we saw other exhibits too, all good.

AMSTERDAM LIGHT FESTIVAL - Three figures sit next to each other on a bench, displaying the typical characteristics of smartphone users: their heads are bent, fingers typing and swiping, and their faces lit up by their phone screens. While their bodies are physically present, their minds are elsewhere.

The phone and computer screens that, literally and figuratively, light up our lives are irresistable. We read new messages immediately and want easy access to our social media, useful apps, and browser. Our smartphones are with us all the time – in bed, on the toilet, in the train, at our desk. They are an extension of our contact with our families, friends, and even people on the other side of the world. And as a result, we engage ourselves more with the virtual and superficial reality than with each other and the real world around us, something Lucas makes painfully clear. Actively involving the audience in the ‘story’ is a recurring feature in the work of the British artist, who works in Amsterdam as a graphic designer.

The Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society founded in 1833, "to promote the useful and fine arts, to encourage industry, and to elicit the ingenuity of a community distinguished for its mechanical skill". I have to say, the main entrance is a lot nicer looking......

Now its the time again. Hosts of last minute enthusiasts filling the city centres and shopping malls trying to find something half way useful to present on Christmas. I never could get something out of that (maybe except when I was a child).

________________________________________________

Useful versus beautiful. A recurring debate in contemporary architecture, where these concepts often seem mutually exclusive. Yet for centuries, functional buildings did not shy away from beauty — especially during the classical period. Istanbul’s Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) is a perfect example. Built in 532 AD by order of Emperor Justinian I, it was designed to store drinking water brought from the Valens Aqueduct and other sources, with a capacity of up to 80,000 m³. From the outside, nothing hints at its presence. But upon descending, we are met with a surprising scene: a forest of 336 marble columns holding up a brick vault. The play of lights, the reflections in the water, the shadows... everything contributes to a magical, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Part of its beauty lies in its imperfection: many columns were repurposed from ancient temples, and their diverse capitals give the space a unique, human character. In the golden gloom of the image, the columns seem to repeat endlessly, mirrored on the still water. The visitor —small, almost invisible— wanders among shadows and light, as if walking through a timeless underground city.

As promised (to Tom) very early Thursday afternoon, two more Acorn woodpeckers upon request. This is a special pair. Normally, I can't tell a mated pair of these birds because they are not monogamous although they do only mate within the family. In order to become a member of an Acorn woodpecker family, you have to be ... hartched into it. Several generations are part of the family. For an outsider to be nominated, there usually has to be a death in the family. I don't know how the voting is accomplished, but I would imagine if the nominee shows up with three or more acorns, its got the insider track.

This is a pair: the male is on the left; female on the right. You can tell by the differences in the red crown.

The acorn woodpecker's habitat is forested areas with oaks in the coastal areas and foothills of Oregon, California, and the southwestern United States, south through Central America to Colombia. This species may occur at low elevations in the north of its range, but rarely below 1,000 m (3,300 ft) in Central America, and it breeds up to the timberline. Nests are excavated in a cavity in a dead tree or a dead part of a tree. Other characteristics are discussed in yesterday's upload.

One other thing that I always mention is that these "clowns" of the woodpecker species were the inspiration for Woody Woodpecker by cattroonist Walter Lantz in the 1930s. The call, a lioud ratcheting sound, HAD to be the model for Woody's call.

This was one of the earliest successful shots of this woodpecker, and one of the first bird images with the SX20 camera. Knowing the behavior and territory of a family ofhem is exceedingly useful in getting good images. For these two, I found the three main Valley oaks (out of as many as five), saw which was getting the most attention, and staked it out for the better part of two summers. With all that, I never saw where a nest was although I could guess by the activity around a hole in the trunk. Once the young are flying, they do not use the nest cavity again. They're too busy hoarding acorns. The branch of the tree that these two were on, collapsed under its own weight in May of 2011. It was estimated that 100,000 acorns had been hammered into that one branch. By the end of 2013, the whole tree had collapsed. flic.kr/p/23Xpdx4
