With all of the nightscaping that I have been doing lately, my stream is looking a little dark, so I have decided to start posting some of my favorite day shots to help brighten it up.

Here's an early evening photo taken in the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs Colorado. As I was waiting for the sun to go down, I watched the shadows stretch across the park and sunlight started to illuminate the top of the Tower of Babel formation and thought I would snap a few. :)

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great week ahead my friends!! :)

If you have any questions about this photo or about photography in general, I will do my best to help, just post a comment or send me a Flickr mail and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Stopped by Bristlecone Forest with Wayne Pinkston to grab a shot of the Ancient Tree. We scouted around looking and found several unique looking trees, but not "the" Tree. During our scouting we ran into Brad Goldpaint a fabulous photographer and educator and really nice guy. He was teaching a night sky workshop and boy does he know how to pick the locations. The sky was so clear here that Wayne even commented that at over 11,000ft in elevation this was possibly the darkest clearest Milky Way he had ever seen. Coming from Wayne I would wager it's pretty clear there, at only 4 hours from my home I have found my new playground. The large star to the right of the scene is the planet Mars BTW.

Here's a link to Brad's webpage if your interested in advancing your photography by taking one of his excellent workshops. His unique teaching style is fun, easy to understand and comprehensive. He not only covers the technical aspects but also includes his thought process which he uses to create spectacular award winning photographs. I know, I was there eavesdropping. Take his course, and you won't be sorry.

This is the canal which links the Cagliari salt evaporation ponds (now dismissed) with the harbour. The salt collected in the ponds was loaded into barges and then a tug carried the train of barges to the harbour where the salt was unloaded to be shipped.

In ancient times the barges were pulled by horses.

It's so old that all the paint has come off the handle. I must have bought this some time in the second half of the 1960s.

Goldfinches.... having a munch...nothing quite like a seed head or two....

How it was done...

Single RAW image...Crucially...Centre weighted average metering... In a poor light situation, where the only good light was on the two Goldfinches.... taking a light reading FROM the Goldfinches themselves makes then stand out just nicely... :)

It's always useful to have two or three different metering set up's in Custom settings on the camera ...changing metering modes quickly is vital.... they were only static for twelve frames then gone...!

Green-veined White - Pieris napi on Great willow herb.

Great willow herb is a large herb that flourishes on damp ground, such as wet grasslands, ditches, riversides and woodland clearings. Deep pink flowers appear on the top of hairy stems from July to August and its fluffy seeds are dispersed by the wind.

What is willow herb good for?

Medicinal use of Willow Herb:

The herb is antispasmodic, astringent, demulcent, emollient, hypnotic, laxative and tonic. It is used in the treatment of diarrhoea, mucous colitis and irritable bowel syndrome. The plant is used in Germany and Austria to treat prostate problems.

Can you eat great willow herb?

It's not the best food, but being so abundant can be very useful. In the Springtime the young shoots and leaves can be eaten raw, and as they get older need to be steamed or boiled for 10 minutes. Treat the shoots like asparagus. The root can be cooked as a vegetable, added to stews.

The wide angle lens is probably the most often used, but also misused, lens in landscape photography. It is a powerful lens, as long as it is used with forethought and for the right scenes. In my article I share with you useful tips for composing powerful wide angle images and I hope it encourages you to go out there and capture the beauty! Please feel free to read the article at this link. I hope you enjoy!

Morning dew - a very useful natural phenomenon. It accumulates the energy of the stars, moon, sun, earth, water, plants, air, and is a natural concentrate of many biologically active substances.

Our ancestors believed dew nectar of immortality, and made good use of its medicinal properties in their lives. In particular, they ran naked in the dewy grass, washed with dew, collected it in a wooden bowl and was used as a cure for many diseases. Healing "Amrita" filled people strength, health, prolong youth and beauty.

Acacia pycnantha, most commonly known as the golden wattle, is a tree of the family Fabaceae. It grows to a height of 8 metres and has phyllodes instead of true leaves. The profuse fragrant, golden flowers appear in late winter and spring, followed by long seed pods. Wikipedia

The golden wattle is the floral emblem of Australia with its masses of sunshine yellow balls of flowers brightening the bush and gardens in late winter to early spring. It grows from 2 to 10 metres tall and is fast growing, but sadly can be short lived. Adapts to most soils as long as they are free draining, and can take some frost and dry periods. Performs best in temperate climate zones. A useful plant- the flowers are fragrant and can be used for making perfume, the seed is edible and the bark is rich in tannins. Green seed can be cooked like peas. Ripe seed can be baked then ground with a mortar and pestle into a low glycaemic flour.

Note– this plant originates from South Australia, but has become a problem plant in some areas where it is becoming weedy and competing with the natural species. Southern Western Australia is one area where this happening. (Gardening with Angus)

________________________________________________

Useful versus beautiful. A recurring debate in contemporary architecture, where these concepts often seem mutually exclusive. Yet for centuries, functional buildings did not shy away from beauty — especially during the classical period. Istanbul’s Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) is a perfect example. Built in 532 AD by order of Emperor Justinian I, it was designed to store drinking water brought from the Valens Aqueduct and other sources, with a capacity of up to 80,000 m³. From the outside, nothing hints at its presence. But upon descending, we are met with a surprising scene: a forest of 336 marble columns holding up a brick vault. The play of lights, the reflections in the water, the shadows... everything contributes to a magical, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Part of its beauty lies in its imperfection: many columns were repurposed from ancient temples, and their diverse capitals give the space a unique, human character. In the golden gloom of the image, the columns seem to repeat endlessly, mirrored on the still water. The visitor —small, almost invisible— wanders among shadows and light, as if walking through a timeless underground city.

Please get me a wrench.

It is no coincidence that this incredibly beautiful, fragrant and useful plant is called a wild rose. A close relative of the most beautiful flower on earth, the rose hip also has thorns, but is also rich in vitamin C and other useful microelements.

The name “rose hips” is used for wild or unmodified rose species. In Russia today there are up to 100 species of rose hips, and not all of them are equally useful, so some of them are used for decorative purposes. Under natural conditions, wild roses grow on mountain slopes, in river valleys, and in fields there are several dozen varieties of the plant. Unpretentious and cold-resistant ornamental rose hips can often be seen as hedges in country houses. Certain types of wild rose are used to make jam, jam and candied fruits.

The healing properties of rose hips have been known since ancient times. Almost all parts of rose hips are used for medicinal and preventive purposes, but the fruits are considered the most useful. This is explained by the high content of vitamin C in them; its concentration here is higher than in black currants and lemon. Wild rose fruits also boast a variety of biologically active substances.

The most popular among medicinal types of rose hips is traditionally considered to be May rose hips. The fruits of needle, Dahur, Kokand, small-flowered rose hips and some other plant species are also used for medicinal purposes.

Not sure what this old piece of equipment is, but it seems safe to say that its useful life has expired.

Do not know what this old and forgotten place was used for but it now sits abandoned along interstate 80 in Nevada, suspect it was maybe used in mining.
