Gravely Hill unique is that it's a separate cemetery within a cemetery. Riverside Memorial Park's 100 acres were developed around it.
But Riverside Park never owned it, said Joel McEachin, the city's historic preservation planner.
Gravely probably dates to 1837 and is immediately west of Memorial Park Road and south of Normandy Boulevard. J.D. Carmichael, who died Dec. 15, 1862, is its earliest known burial though some burials may predate the Civil War.
In 1837, Steven Eubanks prepared a will requesting that he be buried beside "the grave of my departed mother in the burial ground on my plantation called Gravely Hill." This was the first reference to a cemetery associated with the plantation.
Some 20 years later, Miles Price, who was married to Eubanks' daughter, became the owner of the property. Price was a Confederate veteran who died in December 1886 at age 69 and is buried in the cemetery, according to historic archives.
Other things stand out about Gravely Hill, whose 3.22 acres were named a historic designation site by the city in 2008, McEachin said. The cemetery probably originated as part of a plantation that developed in the area and no longer exists.
