Dr. Michael Watson- Administrator, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), and Matthew Rhoads, Acting Deputy Administrator, Plant Protection and Quarantine, get a tour from Lee Weight- Director, L.A.B. (Laboratories of Analytical Biology), of the multiple laboratories at the National Museum of Natural History, Washington D.C., June 17, 2025. Every day, experts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) protect U.S. agriculture and natural resources by identifying pests intercepted on incoming shipments at ports of entry or found around the country. To support this critical work, APHIS signed a memorandum of understanding with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History to co-locate APHIS entomology and botany experts with other Federal and Smithsonian experts already working at the museum. This move will not only consolidate vital knowledge in one place, but it will also give APHIS experts access to the museum’s resources, including their extensive arthropod collection, which is a critical pest identification tool. Affirmation #71 - November 21st, 2010

This is my good listening and concentrating face. As we approach the end of the quarter here at school and are all stressed out and sick of each other, understanding is pretty damn important. We're all basically in the same boat, don't really wanna piss anyone else, but there is also the strong desire to kill each other. So yeah, understanding this, each other, and some other things will help us in these troubled times. Maybe all the prospective grad students who visited OU and said everyone was "super stressed" were onto something....

And even if you're not in an intense graduate studio environment on the QUARTER SYSTEM, this basic information applies.

Understanding the changing media environment and its impact on our society and political climate is complex, requiring analysis from multiple viewpoints. On May 30-31 2014, a conference brought together scholars across fields including political economy, industrial organization, and economic theory to examine critical questions of how the media shapes our lives today.

4me4you visits Unit London Gallery which featured Sthenjwa Luthuli.

This body of work explores the notion of hidden talent and potential, understanding that, from the moment we are born, each of us has a specific purpose or destiny to fulfil. As a concept itself, Imfumbatho refers to the birth of a child, denoting the mystery that inevitably surrounds its future successes and accomplishments. Luthuli’s artworks engage with the complex process of self-development, charting how, as we grow, we find ourselves along the way.

For Luthuli, his “birth secret” revealed itself to be his ability to create intricately handcrafted artworks. He began to use wood to distinguish himself from other artists. However, the wood process is particularly challenging as each work is meticulously hand carved and then painted, requiring patience and determination. The sweeping scale of many of these pieces reflects the perseverance of Luthuli’s process, which never limits itself creatively. Luthuli begins with MDF wood board, typically sketching first to position his figures and patterns. He then uses a marker to embolden his lines before beginning the painstaking carving process; it can take two to three weeks to carve out a single piece. Once this step is complete, the artist applies paint to each individual part before varnishing to ensure the work’s durability.

Luthuli’s choice of the wood material provides a connection to the past; his ancestors’ livelihoods had often centred on handcrafting. In this sense, the artist’s latest body of work is a continuation of a far-reaching creative journey that extends back to his forebears.

Similarly, Luthuli’s exhibition sheds light on the patterns and practices of traditional Zulu dress and design, which are made up of vibrant and intricately woven beads. Growing up surrounded by this particular culture encouraged the artist’s fascination with colour and also with circular forms, inspired by the beading used in Zulu women’s clothing. The circle holds a particular significance in African culture, often symbolising oneness and, equally, the unfailing continuity of life.
