With all the high-profile break-ins at celebrity homes of late—recent burglary victims include model Kendall Jenner, singer Alanis Morissette, and hip-hop artist Nicki Minaj—Beyoncé and JAY Z aren’t taking any chances. The megastar couple are reportedly beefing up security at the $88 million mansion they bought in Los Angeles last summer, eager to install the new fortifications before they go on tour later this year.
The couple submitted building permits to add new living quarters for security guards who could then more easily monitor the Bel Air compound 24/7, according to records TMZ obtained.
The security quarters are to be attached to a new two-story, two-car garage facing the front of the property and a new 10-vehicle carport facing the back road onto the property. This is to ensure that all entrances and exits to the gated, 2-acre compound are secure—and no bad guys or gals are getting in.
For regular folks, it’s often not a big deal if a stranger walks onto their property and rings the bell. They’re usually just friends or family or a courier dropping off a package. But celebrities worried about crazed fans or burglars typically “want to be made aware of people before they get to [their] front door,” says Mike White, senior vice president of Hillard Heintze, a Chicago-based firm that provides security for high-profile clients.
“It’s usually smart to start [securing] the perimeter of the property,” White says. That’s why it makes sense for the A-list couple to install these additional combined parking and security facilities around the entrances and exits of the property.
“If someone’s able to get all the way to your front door, your security measures have already failed,” White says.
It’s not as if the rapper/entrepreneur and singer/actress need the parking. They already have enough garage space to fit about 15 cars, plus a motor court for when they entertain and an area for staff parking.
After a prolonged house hunt, the couple purchased their brand-new, 30,000-square-foot home with a recording studio in August to raise their three children in. It features bulletproof windows, a swimming pool, basketball courts, and a spa. There are currently six buildings on the property.
The Carters are slated to embark this summer on their On the Run 2 tour. It kicks off on June 6 in the United Kingdom. The last show is slated for Oct. 4 in Seattle.

The Republican incumbent in Utah’s 4th U.S. Congressional District is reading from a time-worn political playbook to bash her Democratic challenger over his past opposition to abortion restrictions.
Republican Rep. Mia Love charged at the Salt Lake County Republican Convention in April that Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams, a Democrat running for Congress, would back “unrestricted abortion and use your money to pay for it,” as the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Love is defending her seat in a suburban Salt Lake district that leans Republican, but where Hillary Clinton captured 32 percent of the vote in 2016. The race has gained national attention, landing on the list of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s seats it’s targeting to flip from red to blue. The recognition gives McAdams ready access to national fundraising.
McAdams, a seventh-generation Utahn, is viewed as a strong challenger in a too-close-to-call race. But Love’s charges have put him on offense over his record opposing state-level abortion restrictions. A recent Salt Lake Tribune article played up the fight, with the headline: “Utah Democrat insists he’s just as anti-abortion as his conservative opponent.”
Reproductive rights activists suggest McAdams’ stance is more accurately described as personal versus political: McAdams personally opposes abortion on religious grounds, but has reliably cast votes against abortion restrictions. “Within ‘pro-choice,’ there can be a personal conviction against abortion,” said Pamela Merritt, a reproductive justice activist in St. Louis, in an interview with Rewire.News about McAdams’ record.
Close to 70 percent of Utahns are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS); seven in ten adherents say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases. A Mormon, McAdams recently told the Tribune he has “deeply held beliefs about the sanctity of life.” Like most Mormons, he agrees with LDS teachings on abortion that oppose it except in cases of rape, incest, and life endangerment.
But in an earlier interview in April, McAdams also said abortion was a personal decision. “Ultimately, decisions about terminating a pregnancy should [be] made by a woman in consultation with her physician, family members and faith counselors she trusts,” he said.
McAdams’ campaign office did not respond to Rewire.News‘ request for comment.
McAdams’ voting record as a state senator showed he opposed at least seven bills intended to restrict access to abortion care, including legislation in 2012 imposing a 72-hour waiting period, according to the Tribune’s tally.
“I don’t think someone who voted against a 72-hour waiting period in Utah is anti-choice,” Merritt observed. “He is trying to thread a very difficult needle to say that he personally opposes abortion and that his votes echo the merits of each individual bill.”
She continued,“Both of them are doing some interesting dancing, but the reason I think he’s trying to thread the needle is because his district isn’t as anti-abortion as [Love] is.”
In the 4th Congressional District, support for abortion restrictions is less solid than in the state as a whole. About half of district voters believe abortion should be “illegal in most cases,” with 40 percent saying it should be legal in most or all cases, according to a recent UtahPolicy.com survey of likely voters.
Staunchly anti-choice, Love sat on Rep. Marsha Blackburn’s (R-TN) so-called Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives which pursued false claims by the anti-abortion group run by David Daleiden that abortion providers had illegally profited off of fetal tissue sales. Love and her Republican colleagues also sought to ban abortion nationwide after 20 weeks, defund Planned Parenthood, and create an office within the Department of Justice to enforce the so-called Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, as Rewire.News reported previously.
Meanwhile, McAdams voted against bills to mandate twice-yearly inspections of abortion clinics and require doctors to describe ultrasound images to patients. He also opposed a religious refusal law, which acknowledged the right of health-care providers to refuse to participate in an abortion, a review by the Salt Lake Tribune found.
In explaining his opposition to a bill to criminalize illegal abortions, McAdams said he feared the legislation would’ve jailed pregnant people for accidents that produce a miscarriage, or for a miscarriage itself. “And, you know, a mother in those circumstances needs support and counseling from her loved ones after an accident, and to criminalize a tragedy in the life of a mother was the wrong thing to do. And that’s why I opposed it, and that’s why the governor vetoed it.”

When you’re making Mexican food as high-caliber and inventive as award-winning chefs Enrique Olvera and Daniela Soto-Innes in New York City (and soon Los Angeles), it’s essential that anything served alongside be equally well thought-out. This high standard is the fire behind the encyclopedic mezcal list at Atla, Olvera’s second and more casual NYC restaurant after Cosme, and—as Atla is a true day-to-night joint—it burns at the heart of one of the city’s most unique coffee programs as well.
From the fishbowl of windows surrounding Atla’s sunny NoHo corner to its intimate, downtown-crowded tables and vine-climbed walls, the energy at Atla is convivial, organic. Sure, it’s got the slate-grey tones and clean lines of Cosme, but it’s also open at 9:00am daily, ready to serve chilaquiles, chia bowls, and yes, even, ahem, guacamole toast. And it all goes down with a full line of Mexican—in both preparation and provenance—coffees, to boot.

Coffee here, like Atla’s other beverage programs, is guided assertively by beverage director Yana Volfson. Volfson comes from the wine and spirits world, but she also comes from the Bronx, and immediately knew that practical but delicious coffee would be a necessary focal point of Atla’s drinks program. The restaurant selected Mexico City’s Buna for their coffee roaster of record, working closely with Buna owner Lalo Perez, and bringing in barista Andrew Yee—who cut his NYC coffee teeth at Joe Coffee—to help tailor a coffee setup that would shape the restaurant’s daylight hours.
Coffee at Atla is meant to have “an extroverted tone,” Volfson tells me over a signature coffee drink called the Pollenizer, a cacao-infused cold brew coffee cut with coconut water and honey. The drink was part of a short-run menu in celebration of a Buna collaboration with coffee magazine Drift at Atla this April, an event which further highlighted Atla’s commitment to bringing Mexican coffee to the fore.
“We wanted to use Atla as a place to start talking about coffee and about what we’re designing as a Latin American, Mexican-driven program,” explains Volfson. In putting Atla’s two-group La Marzocco Linea directly behind the bar, coffee became not only a feature of the restaurant’s service—not relegated to a behind-the-scenes part of the restaurant—but also part of the bar program, she says.
“Without question, you wake up in the morning and coffee is part of many people’s daytime rituals if not all-day rituals,” says Volfson. “For us, [coffee] was always going to be a day into night conversation. But I think we took that conversation a little bit further given we’re also a full-time bar. There’s also a conversation to be had about coffee and mezcal, which I think are wonderful pairings.”
You’ll find coffee on the cocktail list, indeed, in a Oaxacan Coffee cocktail with Koch Olla de Barro mezcal, piloncillo sugar, and fleur de cacao cream. But for more traditional coffee service, Atla offers espresso, hot, iced, or con leche spiced cafe de olla—or a traditional café con leche with either cow’s milk or rotating in-house milks, like coconut, cashew, or pecan.

“We sat down to figure out where we were at with coffee culture,” says Volfson, “to determine what would give a barista the confidence to say they know what’s going to taste good. And that seemed to fall more into the element of milk. We started to talk about what a cafe con leche is, given that there’s not much of a difference left between what one would call a cappuccino and what one would call a latte in terms of the NYC experience,” she pauses. “You’re always going for this elevated signature,” says Volfson. The team at Atla was inspired to differentiate its coffee service through these own unique house milks, and Buna’s coffees—which are otherwise unavailable in NYC.
And Buna’s ethos fits perfectly with what Olvera and his team are trying to accomplish in the north, says Volfson.
“Lalo’s brand is really beautiful because for them, biodiversity and cross-farming is something that’s really important, both for the sustainability of the small families that they work with as well as the actual soil of nutrients and of the crop,” says Volfson.
“When it comes to the mezcal that we’re looking for, it’s brands that are sustainable and understanding of a relationship between nature and production, as well as this element of milpa—which is—if we’re going to support small businesses and small farms we need to make sure we’re not just taking from them, but are supporting them in ways that they can sustain for themselves,” Volfson says, adding that Perez works with hundreds of smallholder families in Mexico to source Buna’s coffee—many of whom own less than one hectare of land.
“We’re trying to bring these conversations to the forefront,” says Volfson, adding that pop-up collaborations like the Atla x Buna x Drift Mag event “forces people to ask questions and creates a conversation.”
“I don’t think [only] within the topic of coffee, the topic of cocktails, the topic of wine,” says Volfson. “I think we’re talking about a bigger conversation overall. We’re talking about sustainable farming, small production, the understanding of being a responsible consumer, and the understanding of demand in a supply chain that we completely affect. We’re not in any denial about that,” she says.
“I think we’re just trying to showcase things that are delicious and make us happy and invite us every once in awhile into a conversation that might change us when we leave,” she pauses. “I think that’s what Atla is about, it’s about being able to give people good things so that they come back and ask us what is it about that that made it so special.”

I like to think of myself as a pretty big Kill Paris fan, having listened to his 2012 album The Beginning more times than I can count. Although, in reality, I haven’t listened to a whole lot of his work between then and now. He released his Foreplay EP in 2014 and then his sophomore album Galaxies Between Us in 2015. It wasn’t until 2018 that he partnered with Monstercat for the rollout to his third album, Galaxies Within Us, which came out on Valentine’s Day.
Listening to GWS now, I’m definitely reminded of the magic that I experienced listening to The Beginning for the first time. It has that same sort of funk and swagger that made me fall in love with his music in the first place, with a lot more polish and innovation.
For this album, Kill Paris relied heavily on the MIDI Sprout, a device which converts an object’s electrical energy into MIDI notes. Pairing the MIDI Sprout with Ableton, one can create some pretty terrific sounds, like you’ll hear on this album.

So first things first, how did you hear about MIDI Sprout?
I first heard of Midi Sprout from Duncan Trussell on an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. It was something I just had to have.
Is this album entirely plant biodata like your Splice pack? Or are there some pre-existing sounds in there as well?
No, not entirely, but it’s used almost entirely on songs like “Breathing In, Letting Go” and “Random.” All of the vocal harmonies on Random we generated from a MIDI Sprout that I hooked up to my hands while singing the lyrics. And in “Breathing In, Letting Go” the main synth sound was made by holding the MIDI sprout in my hands while doing Wim Hof’s breathing exercise. I think that’s been the most fascinating thing about the MIDI sprout is using it to interact with my own body’s electricity. It’s a great feedback tool when doing things like meditating or just tuning into how you are feeling a given moment.
How many plants would you even say you’ve data-mined?
Data mined, lol, that sounds cold! There’s been quite a handful. The most interesting have been a spider plant (that’s no longer with us, RIP) and the Venus Fly Trap. The Venus Fly Trap is interesting because it’s one of the few plants that get the majority of their nutrients from insects instead of photosynthesis. So the electrical activity of the plant is very mild until it senses something in its trap. When it does sense a bug in its trap, there is a huge electrical spike! It’s really wild!
I assume an infinite amount of synths could be created, combining different plants with different patches and instruments. How do you zero in on what kind of sound you want to produce? Do you see a sunflower and think, “Oh, thank goodness, I’ve been needing bass synth”?
It’s more about just listening to what the plant is doing. It all seems kind of random, but if you listen closely, you can pick out little riffs or chords that the plant is generating. It’s a very patience-driven creative process.
How much goes into translating a plant MIDI signal into an actual, usable sound?
With Ableton, it’s pretty easy to guide the MIDI into usable forms. I’ve gotten pretty efficient at making MIDI racks that produce very whimsical sounds.
The name of the album, Galaxies Within Us, clearly places it as a sequel to your 2015 album, Galaxies Between Us. What is the difference between galaxies between people or within people, in a broad sense?
It’s not necessarily a sequel, hell it could even be considered a prequel! The whole inspiration behind “Galaxies Within Us” is simply going within. That’s why Wim Hof is a big part of this album as well. He’s one of the public figures who is doing their part in reminding society that the true power of change is all within. The secret to happiness and meaning is all within. This album has been a journey within for me. I spent a few years really unmotivated and uninspired by the world around me. Then I realized, the world doesn’t owe me shit. If I want something done, I have to do it. If I want to find deep meaning in life, I have to find it. The world doesn’t owe me shit!
As a fan of yours since The Beginning, I’m really happy to hear you move back to some more heavily textured sounds like on “Magic” and “I (Still) Dream Of You.” Was that a conscious decision, or more of a result of whatever your head space is at the time?
Something I’ve really tried to do since “The Beginning” is blend heavier sounds with melodic lines. I’ve tried to make songs that you can dance and get down to, but also just listen at home casually. So with those 2 songs, I feel like I kind of found that balance. But, in my experience, that balance is a very hard thing to manage, but I’m always appreciative when it happens.
As a purveyor of funk yourself, how was it finally getting in the studio with Colorado funk lords Big Gigantic on “Fizzy Lifting Drink”?
It’s funny, I made the majority of that song in like one day. I don’t know what it was, one of those perfect studio days where there’s no preconceived thoughts to get in the way of the actual work. I then sent it to Dom, and I was like, “Dude, I think this is cool and it would be REALLY cool if you put some sax on it.” He really liked it and that was that. It was finished pretty quick! Then I got a hold of Jimi Tents whose voice I felt would be perfect for the track, and he dug the song too. The track title “Fizzy Lifting Drink” was a title my manager and I had in our list of song name ideas that we have. It was one of those songs that really just came together rather effortlessly, and those are always my favorite. I imagine this is what it sounds like after sipping some of Wonka’s Fizzy Lifting Drink.
Was the release on Valentine’s Day intentional? I know you’re a pretty romantic guy (I’m obsessed with The Beginning, after all).
It kind of was. There’s some romantic songs on the album, but more importantly, this album is about going within. So it was more chosen to come out on Valentine’s Day for those who don’t have a significant other or are going through hard times. It’s like a little reminder that it’s all good, just breath, chill.
You probably don’t have an answer to this, but I’ve noticed a strange pattern: if a song is called “Two Minds” or has “two minds” in the lyrics, it’s invariably a banger. This has stayed true for Nero’s song “Two Minds,” as well as yours, and a song of Delta Heavy’s with “two minds” in the lyrics. Care to offer any explanation?
Ya know, I don’t know. But I do know that the expression “two minds” is about holding two perspectives at the same time, which would constitute a higher level of cognition vs “one mind.” So that being said, I believe if you are able to hold 2 contradicting perspectives within a song, at least half of the song would be a banger.

2018 was a great year filled with a lot of new products and technology. We saw many new and exciting products released, with a few unexpected ones that surprised me.
I also got to review some vintage gear and while I didn’t attend any shows, I still was able to see and demo a number of products released this year. I think we are also getting to the point where most tech is coming down in price while still delivering great quality; examples include Sonos and McIntosh. Here are my top picks and wish list items from 2018.
Smart Thermostat – Nest Thermostat E – Top Pick
Simple to install, set up, and use; it has never let me down. I’ve been using Nest thermostats for years and they have been great. It keeps my home at a nice temperature with little input and the app lets me manage my climate control from anywhere.
Smart Soundbar – Sonos Beam – Top Pick
This smaller soundbar from Sonos is a real winner, packing some really good sound into a compact package. Amazon Alexa voice control combined with HDMI/ARC connectivity is solid on paper and takes some effort to get going, but once sorted out, it’s a solid package that’s fun to use.
Integrated Amplifier – Mcintosh MA252 – Wish List
This sweet-sounding hybrid tube amp with a built-in phono stage makes a great entry level McIntosh piece. It also has two sets of RCA inputs and a balanced input as well, a fantastic unit for the price. It’s sure to last for decades and you can upgrade the tubes to your heart’s (and ear’s) content.
Mesh Networking system – Eero – Wish List
The best wireless mesh network I’ve used to date, sure there are better deals out there, but Eero is the most powerful and stable system I’ve seen. If you have serious issues in your home with Wi-Fi and lack Cat6, Eero is the way to go.
Voice Control – Amazon Alexa – Top Pick
Alexa has her quirks, but I still find myself using her more than Google because of the sheer amount of home automation skills she has. I often use Alexa to control my TV, lighting, and timers.
Headphones – Bowers & Wilkins PX – Wish List
I really need to buy a pair of these. They sound great and have a really cool feature set inside their app. Another plus is they are not too expensive compared to others.

I’ve owned a plasma before and sure, they look great, but they run hot and use a ton of power. The new OLEDs are incredible and use far less power while still having amazing blacks, the new A9F is brighter than the outgoing A8 OLED and it is impressive; the best TV I’ve seen to date.
Going into 2019…
Looking forward to 2019 I really hope to see improvements in networking. Mesh networks have gotten so much better, but I feel there is still room for improvement (and greater value). Also, OLEDs are slowly coming down in price. I can’t wait until we see 55 and 65-inch screens get to around $1000, that will be my buying point. Sonos always peaks my interest, I am sure they have some more products already in the pipeline, and I will be there to jump on a review. I hope everyone has an amazing and safe rest of the year, I look forward to more writing in 2019.

For what, what did you do? Prolonging his misery, for the few coins you tossed him? Like it was yours to decide who has money and who hasn’t?
He could at least toast me with the cheap wine he’s buying.
I don’t know if he’s into wine. To me, he did not look like a wine-person.
Most homeless guys are skinny, so I did not think of him as a beer person.
-That comes from walking. Constant walking. That actually is a more healthy lifestyle than sitting in a bureau all day.
The conception here is, that we are living a mediocre life, far from all extreme ways of pursuing happiness: But this is not true. The whole planet burns up from our exhausts, we wage war on most eastern countries, and when we do not wage war with guns, we do it with our money. We kill for pleasure as we eat more than what we need to survive and we have installed a gigantic killing machine of an industrial scale. When you’re rich, you are part of an obscene machinery to store wealth, when you’re poor, you’re part of the same machinery as you struggle to keep from becoming even poorer. If this is not extreme, I don’t know what is.

This is a very important step to prevent leaks around the new rooftop AC unit.You are now ready to transport the new unit to the rooftop of your Airstream travel trailer. Unless you are very strong you will need some help with this job. Be very careful if using ladders as it is easy to lose your balance while lifting the new air condtioner. First, remove the new protective shroud to facilitate ease of handling and placement. Installing The New RV Air Conditioner Situating the new rooftop AC unit correctly requires some help to keep from having to go up and down the ladder several times to check both inside, and on the rooftop, to correctly align the new unit. By loosely connecting the 4 retaining bolts through the ceiling flange, you can move the new rooftop unit around until it is evenly spaced in the 14” square duct hole in the Airstream roof.Once you have the new unit in the right spot you can tighten the bolts which compresses the new gasket and insure a watertight seal. If you purchased the optional heating element for your rooftop AC, proceed to install it according to the enclosed directions. This is a simple plug in assembly for electrical connections.Connect the Airstream line electrical wires to the new AC unit by using wire nuts and replacing the cover of the junction box. The ceiling assembly is usually attached by 4 screws to the ceiling flange. Install the new rooftop AC shroud with the 4 retaining nuts. Reconnect the power supply to the Airstream and the job is finished. Using and maintaining your new Airstream ACTest the new unit to ensure everything is working correctly with no circuit breakers kicking off. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who has a different range of films in the pipeline, will be joining hands with actor Chiranjeevi in his upcoming multi-lingual historic drama, Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy. The film will be based on the life of a popular freedom fighter from Kurnool.
A source close to film unit confirmed about Amitabh Bachchan’s role but refused to spill more beans about his role. It has been reported that Amitabh Bachchan will be playing a crucial role.Actress Nayanthara has been finalised as the leading lady for the magnum opus project.
Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy’s title logo and motion poster will be unveiled on August 22 on the occasion Chiranjeevi’s birthday. The film will be directed by Surender Reddy and is being bankrolled by Ram Charan on a whopping budget.
Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan is currently shooting for the new season of Kaun Banega Crorepati. The actor will be seen in 102 Not Out with Rishi Kapoor. Directed by Umesh Shukla, the film is slated to release on December 1, 2017. Innervisions, a tech house collective and record label founded by Dixon and Âme, will be making their LA debut this May. Plans for the event have been revealed to include extended open-air performances by Dixon, Âme (DJ Set), and Trikk set against the breathtaking view of the Los Angeles skyline making it a rare North American addition to the annual showcase series. In 2018, Innervisions’ showcases were held in London, Moscow, Marrakesh, Barcelona, and Paris. There was an event planned to be held in New York but it was unfortunately canceled following the abrupt closure of the event’s venue.
According to the press release “The LA event pairs the joy of dancing under a Southern California midsummer sunset, the drama of LA’s cinematic skyline and the history and discovery of seeing an iconic LA urban park reimagined for one night only.”
Innervisions has teamed up with Los Angeles production company Future Primitive for the event, which will run from 4-11pm.
