Coming to our Drinking Water Week Open House this Saturday? Here’s some important history about the Garrett A. Morgan Water Treatment Plant to know.

The Site of Cleveland’s First Water Works

The Garrett A. Morgan Water Treatment Plant is the oldest of Cleveland Water’s four treatment plants. Cleveland’s first municipal waterworks was opened on the same site on September 24, 1856.

Prior to then, residents’ water came from surface water and spring wells. As the city grew, residents petitioned the City Council for municipal water service. And in 1853, the City of Cleveland hired Theodore Scowden, a waterworks engineer from Cincinnati, to plan and supervise the project.

The system that Scowden designed consisted of an intake pipe located 300 feet from the shore of Lake Erie that fed water into a brick aqueduct. The aqueduct conveyed the lake water to a steam-powered pumping station. The water was then pumped into a nearby 6 million-gallon reservoir and distributed by gravity throughout the city via 13 miles of pipe. While the delivery method was improved, the water remained unfiltered and untreated.

Garrett A. Morgan’s Heroic Tunnel Rescue

As Cleveland’s population continued to grow, the demand for water increased. But a booming population and economy adversely affected water quality. The Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie shoreline became polluted, increasing rates of cholera and typhoid.

The city needed to find a way to improve the quality of water and distribute it to a larger area.

So in 1914, construction began on an intake tunnel under Lake Erie that would be larger and extended farther offshore than any others that existed at the time, allowing for fresher, cleaner water to be delivered to Clevelanders. The tunnel would supply water to the city’s new Division Avenue Pumping and Filtration Plant.

On the evening of July 24, 1916, a powerful gas explosion occurred at the tunnel entrance, trapping the workmen inside. Volunteers immediately began searching for survivors but many succumbed to the gas in the tunnel and died, preventing further rescue attempts.

A policeman persuaded Cleveland authorities to contact Garrett A. Morgan, a local African-American inventor and entrepreneur. The officer had seen Morgan demonstrate a hood-like smoke protection device he invented for firefighters.

Early the following morning, Morgan and his brother Frank arrived with several of his smoke hoods. The Morgan brothers and two volunteers made four trips down into the tunnel, rescuing several men and recovering a number of bodies before officials stopped further rescue and recovery efforts. Nineteen men ultimately perished, and at least nine others were injured, but Morgan’s heroism would become a major part of his legacy.

The Division Avenue Plant was put into service in 1918, pumping filtered water through water mains for the first time. An engineering marvel of its time, the one-story, brick building was built with two wings, each housing 18 filters, administrative offices and testing laboratories.

Recent History

In 1991, the Division Avenue Station was renamed to honor Garrett A. Morgan, in recognition of his role in rescuing men from the intake tunnel disaster.

From 2001 to 2012, $177.2 million was spent on renovations to the Morgan Water Treatment Plant as part of Cleveland Water’s Plant Enhancement Program. The improvements included a new finished water pump station, renovated filters, a new in-line rapid mix, a renovated Filter and Administration building, a renovated raw water pump station, installation of a plant-wide automation system, a new 15 million gallon reservoir, transition to a safer chlorine feed system, and the demolition of the old finished water pump building.

In 2016, Cleveland Water hosted a ceremony at the Morgan Treatment Plant to recognize the 100th anniversary of the tunnel disaster and subsequent rescue effort.

The event honored those who lost their lives and recognized the heroic efforts of Morgan and other volunteers who participated in the rescue effort. City of Cleveland officials joined descendants of the men who died during the disaster and rescue workers, many of whom met for the first time.

Speakers included Sandra Morgan, the granddaughter of the African-American inventor, Mayor Frank Jackson, and Director of Public Utilities Robert Davis.

Today, the Garrett A. Morgan Water Treatment Plant pumps an average of 60 million gallons of water a day to the residents and businesses located downtown and in the western and southern suburbs of Cleveland and stands as a testament to the history and progress of water treatment in Cleveland.

SHOCKING: Nawazuddin Siddiqui claims that he is not a part of Chandamama Door Ke

Despite the debacle of Raabta, Sushant Singh Rajput’s credibility was more or less intact due to his list of upcoming films. One of them is Chandamama Door Ke, a space drama, which is a first in Bollywood. Besides its theme, what also made the project exciting is that Nawazuddin Siddiqui and R Madhavan were also a part of it. Nawazuddin especially was an exciting choice since he has exceled as much in multiple hero films, just like his solo films, like Raees with Shah Rukh Khan, Kick and Bajrangi Bhaijaan with Salman Khan, Munna Michael with Tiger Shroff, Badlapur with Varun Dhawan and many more.

But now Nawazuddin Siddiqui has shocked everyone by claiming that he isn’t a part of Chandamama Door Ke. The actor recently said that he hasn’t had a word with the makers of the film on whether he is a part of the film and that he hasn’t signed the dotted line. This is quite bewildering since last year in October, Nawazuddin Siddiqui had excitedly talked about being a part of the film. He said that it’s going to be a difficult part but he’s gung-ho about it and is happy to be trying new things.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui however did confirm that he is doing the Netflix show Sacred Games, which is based on Vikram Chandra’s bestseller of the same name. It also stars Saif Ali Khan and is produced by Phantom Films. Besides, he is looking forward to Manto, a film based on the revolutionary Sadat Hasan Manto, which will release in 2018. Recently, Nawazuddin Siddiqui had a release in the form of Kushan Nandy’s Babumoshai Bandookbaaz and a short film, Carbon, co-starring Jackky Bhagnani and Prachi Desai.

Shahid Kapoor to be part of fitness app that features his dietary plan for users

Today is the age of digital media, when more happens within the online world than in the real one. With people across the globe spending more time lost with their devices, we have seen a massive shift from other mediums to digital. In fact, a number of Bollywood celebrities too have gone digital with their own apps, and joining them soon will be none other than Shahid Kapoor.

Apparently, Shahid who is currently in London with his wife and daughter Misha to bring in the little one’s first birthday has given his nod to being part of a fitness app. If what we hear is true then, the said app will feature Shahid Kapoor talking about his diet and his meal plans and patterns. The app will also boast of a health expert, who will customize the user’s diet depending on his/her body type and nutritional necessity. According to reports, Shahid’s currently underproduction app will be one following the same path, taking his vegan diet to his fans so they too can benefit from his experiences. Says a source, “Shahid is currently holidaying in London but has shown interest in associating with the app. He understands the challenges vegetarians face in terms of fitness and diet and wants to reach out to them and inspire them to stick to their fitness body goals despite the challenges vegetarians face in terms of restricted food groups”.

Back on the film front, Shahid Kapoor, who was last seen on the big screen in the film Rangoon will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati. Also starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, Padmavati is slated to release later this year in November.

A shooting outside Chicago nightclub Sound Bar last Friday resulting in the death of one of the club’s bouncers has forced the venue closed, local news reports.

A notice was taped on the door yesterday morning by the police superintendent, ordering the venue closed. Writes local CBS affiliate, “Police say the club is a public safety threat because last Friday’s shooting was connected to employees and patrons.”

A 28-year-old bouncer, Thurman Bailey, was killed; another man, only identified as a “58-year-old man associated with the club,” was also wounded.

Bailey’s mother said her son was shot by someone who was turned away at the door.

Shows this weekend with Say My Name and Arty were relocated after the club voluntarily closed out of respect to Bailey.

Navigating a trip from Australia into the heart of East Africa is no easy task, but with inspiring coffee partners waiting on the ground for us, it was easily worth the effort. In Burundi, I’d be visiting our partners, Long Miles Coffee to identify potential lots for both our limited release range and blends, in addition to getting to grips with an ambitious collaboration project to extend the native Kibira Rainforest. The people, landscapes, experiences and certainly the coffees were something to write home about!

Burundi Bound

Any of the cramped, jet lagged trials to get to Burundi seem insignificant as you fly into the capital, Bujumbura and see the landscape unfolding below.

The Long Miles Cupping Lab

With a strong sense of shared values around excellent quality coffee and social impact, we’ve been buying from Long Miles for the past 6 years. The plan on this trip was to spend a couple of days in the Long Miles lab in Bujumbura cupping and then head upcountry to see the harvest in action and visit the Kibira Rainforest.

Getting cracked into the cupping table we had a sample spread representing day lots, separated by hill. Each day, cherries would be delivered to the Heza washing station by the small holder farmers on the surrounding hills such as Nkonge and Gitwe. Each delivery would be clearly recorded per farmer and then these small parcels of cherry – often around 40kg – would be combined into the day lots.

Separate lots are made from deliveries made each day, separated by hills such as Gitwe and Nkonge.

Grading lot samples.

Limited Release Selection

3 cups per sample to asses uniformity.

For our limited release program, I was looking for distinctive coffees, scoring 86 or more points on the cupping form. The cost of these smaller, higher scoring parcels of coffee would be significantly higher and would end up being featured for filter roasts and single origin espresso, so I knew they had to be good. And I wasn’t disappointed! Although many of the samples were only recently off the drying beds, and therefore a little unstable in their flavours, there were some incredible standouts from both Gitwe and Nkonge, spreading everywhere from elegant citrus with sparkling acidity to deep papaya and strawberries and cream.

Cupping prepped and ready to go.

Heza Washing Station

The following days, we headed upcountry. Around 1.5 hours drive away is the Heza washing station which receives and processes cherry from 5 surrounding hills and around 2000 small holder farmers. Heza is perched on the slopes of the Gitwe hill and on the opposite side of the valley stands Nkonge, the two main hills we’ve been sourcing from.

On the winding roads.

Cherries come through the pulper, and into the ferment tanks.

Antestia Bug

One of the major challenges for Burundian farmers is the Antestia bug which can burrow into the coffee cherries causing what’s known as Potato defect – pretty self-explanatory: no-one wants the taste of raw potatoes in their morning brew! Luckily, farmer training and education run by Long Miles has seen potato defect rates drop from 40% of crops when they first established to now less than 2%. That yield increase alone is a huge impact for the livelihoods of these small holder farmers.

L: Entering leafy arches. | M: Ranger Deus was a wealth of knowledge about Kibira. | R: The Rainforest.

Trees for Kibira

Just prior to heading to this sourcing trip, we ran a fundraising campaign, Trees for Kibira, with some of our incredible café partners and Common Man Coffee Roasters to raise money for an extensive reforestation project. Extending the native Kibira Rainforest through surrounding coffee lands, the goal is to encourage climate stability, ensuring coffee farmer livelihood for years to come. After hearing so much about this great project, we were excited to hike through this beautiful forest – one of the sources of the White Nile!

Every visitor to Kibira is hosted by a ranger. This is Ranger Deus.

Seeds from native, nitrogen fixing trees will be the cornerstone of the reforestation.

While the Trees for Kibira project is in its infancy, it’s exciting to be collaborating on a project that could have a significant impact on the livelihoods of so many people. Stay tuned as we’ll be attempting to bring you updates on our progress.

And don’t forget, if all these pictures of Burundi have got your mouth watering, we’ve still got a few of the existing crop roasted up and ready for you brewing enjoyment

Court refuses the stay demanded on the release of Shraddha Kapoor starrer Haseena Parkar

Shraddha Kapoor starrer Haseena Parkar has been facing several controversies, courtesy its plot that revolves around the life of Mumbai’s very own godmother Haseena Parkar, who is also the sister of gangster Dawood Ibrahim. Now yet another minor setback that it faced was when a PIL was filed against the makers to stay the release.

A city resident filed a PIL demanding the stay of the release of the film Haseena Parkar featuring Shraddha Kapoor just a day before its release. According to the petition, the dialogues in the film were anti-national and it also claimed that the film failed to handle certain incidents with sensitivity like the Mumbai 1993 blasts [where Dawood was suspected of being involved in the crime]. On the other hand, the Bombay High Court where the petition was filed refused to stay the release of the film saying that it can’t stay the release of the film approved by the CBFC [Central Board of Film Certification].

Talking about staying the release, the court reportedly also questioned the petitioner for filing the PIL just a day before the release of the film. A bench headed by Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice N M Jamdar firmly asserted that the court wouldn’t interfere in a decision made by the CBFC when they have cleared the movie for public release.

Directed by Apoorva Lakhia and also starring Siddhanth Kapoor, Ankur Bhatia among others, Haseena Parkar releases worldwide today on September 22.

Akshay Kumar – Rajinikanth starrer 2.0’s release pushed again?

By now we all know that Akshay Kumar will be seen sharing screen space with southern superstar Rajinikanth in the film 2.0. While fans have eagerly been waiting to see their favourite action star Akshay Kumar go head to head with Rajinikanth in the film, since he is playing the villain, their hopes were put on hold with the release of the film being pushed from Diwali 2017 to January 2018.

However, now we hear that the release of the film has been pushed yet again. If what we hear is to be believed then 2.0 which was slated to release on Republic Day next year will miss the date. Though an official confirmation on the release date shift is awaited, current market buzz states that the date has been shifted since the VFX for the film is yet to be completed. Apparently, the VFX heavy film has taken longer than expected in the post production stage and hence the date needed to be shifted.

While a new release date has not yet been set, with this delay the film will avoid clashing with the Sidharth Malhotra starrer Aiyaary that is being directed by Neeraj Pandey.

Fisher took the world by storm in 2018. He showed up everywhere and had one of the biggest, if not the biggest song of the year, “Losing It.” With an infectious blend of g-house and deep house, as well as a hilarious persona on stage and on social media, Fisher became a fan favorite for millions. He was also named one of Your EDM’s breakout artists of 2018.

But while Fisher is waiting to find out if he’s won a GRAMMY, there’s another name making waves in the US: Ricky Retro.

There are a lot of similarities between Ricky and Fisher, beyond just their sound. Whereas Fisher’s character is unapologetically Australian, Ricky is the epitome of ‘Merican values. Every other post on his Instagram seems to be him shotgunning a beer, playing a frat party in the midwest, or visiting a race track.

Aside from his Instagram, he’s also the first artist with a cowboy hat to grace the cover of a major dance playlist (Dance Rising). His rapid come up has us scratching our heads and wondering what he’ll come up with next. Well… we found out. He’s supporting Skrillex, Alesso, Illenium, and Chris Lake at this year’s Snakepit.

What are you hoping to hear @Skrillex + @Alesso + @ILLENIUMMUSIC + @chrislake & @gorickyretro play at the 2019 #Indy500SnakePit?

If that wasn’t already ‘Merican enough, he’s out with a new single aptly named “Murica” after the red white and blue he reps harder than any American DJ before him. Ricky represents everything we love to hate about America, which makes for the perfect rage anthems for ultimate debauchery.

In short, what we’re saying is, we have a feeling Ricky Retro is going to have a stellar year ahead of him. Check out our favorite of his recent songs, “1977,” a blend of Lynyrd Skynyrd-style guitar riffs and deep house synths.

OMG! Did Apurva Asrani call Kangana Ranaut a criminal?

Just today in the morning we posted news of Apurva Asrani refusing to react to the latest tirade of Kangana Ranaut on a popular talk show on a news channel. The actress accused Apurva Asrani of unnecessarily creating a scene over not getting credit for Kangana’s upcoming film Simran, which he wrote. Kangana Ranaut claimed that he was always going to get due credit for writing Simran and also says that it was all a publicity stunt from his side.

Apurva Asrani however has now decided to open up on these shocking allegations. He made a series of tweets wherein he didn’t take anybody’s name but it’s obvious that he’s responding to Kangana’s claims. He raked up the issue of ‘pseudo feminism’ and asked that if it’s fair that women transgress the limits of decency just because men also do the same? He hit back at these ‘pseudo feminists’ and blamed them for cheering for a ‘woman who commits a crime’. He then asked whether these women are trying to understand the issue completely or are they being lenient towards Kangana Ranaut? He didn’t stop at that and said that it’s strange that the ‘pseudo feminists’ celebrate when a woman breaks the rule, but shame a man for doing the same. He finally signed off by saying writers being harassed is injustice and that’s something that won’t change despite Kangana Ranaut’s outspokenness.

Looks like this explosive interview of Kangana Ranaut has ruffled quite a few feathers in Bollywood. It now remains to be seen how the others, targeted by Kangana, react, namely Aditya Pancholi, Adhyayan Suman and above all, Hrithik Roshan.

Women who transgress the limits of decency & fair play by saying ‘men did it, so why can’t we?’ only compound the problem. #pseudofeminism

Hardcore Till I Die music festival is making headlines for all the wrong reasons as a violent — and now viral — video clip from the event has surfaced of a dramatic arrest.

Footage shows a handful of officers holding down a man and one of them “booting” the “poor guy” while he’s down. The video has sparked much outrage on social media as potentially unwarranted police brutality. Of course, there’s much more to the story than this “harrowing” 30-second clip.

According to a report, Isoa Rabuatoka (18) allegedly punched a security guard in the face, spat on police officers, and threw a glass bottle at an 18-year-old girl. The bottle was apparently meant for a security guard, but it struck the attendee, leaving her with glass embedded in her face.

When police approached and confronted Rabuatoka about this series of incidents, he reportedly became violent. It’s also alleged by police that he had “an entire bottle of Jim Beam and MDMA in his system.”

Despite the reasoning, one police officer can clearly be seen viciously kneeing the suspect. Many people on social media are angered by the video and believe the police officer took this way too far.

“This makes me physically sick omg,” one comment reads.

“These dickheads [the police] need to be taught manners,” another says.

“The NSW Police Force, backed by the Lib government, has been given free reign to abuse their powers for far too long,” a share from anti-drug dog campaigners Sniff Off reads.

Watch below and sound off in the comments.

HGTV

“Fixer Upper” has ended, but Chip and Joanna Gaines are still with us—thanks to Joanna’s new spinoff, “Fixer Upper: Behind the Design.”

This new show, which premiered on HGTV on Tuesday, walks us through renovations from past seasons of “Fixer Upper.” Well, call it more of a slow stroll, showing us behind-the-scenes footage. Chip makes the occasional appearance, but Joanna and her decor ideas are the true stars this time around.

“You’ve seen our fixer-uppers, but you haven’t seen the full story,” Joanna says. “For all the little decisions that turn these houses into dream homes, construction is only half the battle. So I want to show you how all the details and designs come together before the final reveal.”

For the first episode, titled “The Baker House,” we revisit the home of Patti Baker, a widow who moved to Waco, TX, to be near her grown sons. She wants an uncluttered design that’s a bit country, with lots of space to hang family photos. (Didn’t catch this particular “Fixer Upper” episode when it first aired? HGTV conveniently reruns it right before this show so you can easily catch up or get a refresher.)

The renovated Baker home

HGTV

But even if you’re watching a home makeover you’ve technically “seen” once before, it doesn’t feel that way, because Joanna finds plenty more to say that will inspire you anew. Here’s some of the great decor advice we gleaned watching the first episode of her spinoff show.

Paint a few swatches before you pick a color—particularly outdoors

Joanna has decided to paint the Baker house gray, but if you’ve been to a paint store lately, you know there are many shades of gray. So she has Chip paint three variations of the hue on the side of the house to ponder how they look—rain or shine, day or night.

She explains that the way a color reflects light at different times of day and under different weather conditions “really makes a difference.”

‘Try out’ flowers before you plant them for good

Plants are such a critical element of landscaping, you have to make sure they’re right. So, in the same way Joanna “tests” various paint colors, she gets the local nursery to deliver several plant options so she can compare her options. Sometimes she even digs holes and switches the plants in and out, so she can really see what will look best in its final setting.

For the Baker house, she decides against fuchsia tulips, because the color is too strong against the gray, and their lines are too vertical. She opts instead for fluffier, more delicate pink flowers instead.

Open shelving in a kitchen? Get dishes that look great on display

The kitchen features open shelving and a farm table island.

Magnolia

Open shelving makes a kitchen look more spacious and is certainly less expensive than custom cabinets, but the drawback is that your plates, bowls, and more are always on display. That can spell trouble if your dishes don’t look fabulous. So what do you do?

Joanna solves this problem by having a local artist and potter, Jonathan Martin, create a set of country dishes that have the name “Baker” stamped on every piece. What’s more, as Joanna arranges that lovely new crockery on the open shelving in the kitchen, she explains how important it is to place items of varying heights and shapes on the shelves to add visual interest.

Use a farm table as a kitchen island

To create more workspace in a smaller kitchen, Joanna opts for a rustic wooden table in the center, rather than an enclosed island.

“In this case, using a table helped to make the room feel bigger, because you have an unobstructed view all the way to the back wall,” she says.

Ledges = an easier way to display framed photos

Photo ledges line the living room wall.

Magnolia

Baker has lots of family photos that she wants to display, so Joanna suggests running two photo ledges, or shelves with grooves in them where photos can sit securely, across one living room wall.

“You can just set pictures on them,” she explains. “With no measuring, no hanging, you’re good to go.” How simple (and genius) is that?

The right colors for a small home

Joanna explains that if you want to keep your small home feeling cozy but not crowded, you should keep patterns minimal and colors more neutral. That way, she says, your home will seem clean and uncluttered.

In Baker’s home, Joanna uses neutral hues and soft color balanced with consistent wooden tones. That translates to mostly beiges, creams, and pale blues, with lots of natural wood accents.

Make room for a master bath

While Joanna usually makes rooms bigger (or at least seem that way), in this home she shrinks the size of a “powder bath” for very good reason: to make more space in the master bath, which shares a wall with the powder room. After all, Baker will be using the master a lot more, so it deserves more space. The powder room doesn’t, and is almost cuter when small.

What’s up with the Baker house now?

This isn’t covered on the show, but we thought you should know: While Baker loved her new house, she put it on the market for $349,900 just months after the “Fixer Upper” filming wrapped. Why? Because she received a surprise marriage proposal from her town pastor—on their first date, no less—and the house is too small for them both. The house is currently off the market, so it appears that some lucky buyer snapped it up! We get it: Who wouldn’t want to bask in that Gaines glow a little longer?

Cedarhurst, located in Holly Springs, MS, is a Gothic Revival masterpiece with quite a historic pedigree. Built in 1857 by a wealthy doctor named Charles Bonner, the home was a makeshift hospital during the Civil War and the headquarters of the commander of the 4th Military District during Reconstruction. The home is now on the market for $272,000.

Bonner’s daughter, Katherine Sherwood Bonner, was a feminist and author who studied with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In 1878, Bonner and his son died in a yellow fever epidemic, and later the home passed to Sherwood Bonner’s daughter Lillian.

In 1901, the home was sold to William A. Belk, who named it Cedarhurst. The house is still occupied by the Belk family today. Cedarhurst’s new buyer would be only the third family to live in the house in 161 years.

The house is classic neo-Gothic, with its two-story gables, Tudor windows, and cast-iron balustrade made at the nearby James-McIlwain foundry. If Southern Gothic is your thing, Cedarhurst is an amazing deal.

With five bedrooms and three baths, the 5,000-square-foot home features wide-plank wood floors, high ceilings, and fireplaces galore. An in-law wing behind the home has a bedroom and second kitchen. The property also includes 10 acres of surrounding land.

For a 161-year-old house, Cedarhurst is in great shape, and retains a lot of period details such as the light fixtures, the stunning Tudor windows, and the lacy iron balustrade.

“This home could easily be used as a bed-and-breakfast or wedding venue,” says listing agent Stephanie Lawson.

This description of the house, written in 1903 by Mrs. N.D. Deupree in “Some Historic Homes of Mississippi,” could have been written today:

“The home is a commodious brick mansion built in Gothic style, with windows opening to the floor, a wide portico in front, the roof supported by ten slender iron pillars, with handsome fretwork also of iron joining the pillars. The balcony has the same design of fret-work in the balustrade that surrounds it.

“The house stands quite a distance from the street, and is surrounded by a spacious lawn shaded by fine old oaks, holly and cedars.”

Anyone in the market for an extremely reasonably priced piece of Mississippi history should grab Cedarhurst before it’s gone.
