Shortly before Angelina (a pseudonym) and her 6-year-old son were detained for two months at a family detention camp in rural New Mexico, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary told a Senate committee that for adults who migrate alone from Central America, there would be no hearing before an immigration judge. Rather, their removal would be expedited. For Central American parents like Angelina who migrated to the United States with their children, the message was “simple,” the DHS secretary said. “We will send you back.”

Though this sounds like a scene out of the current administration, it was Obama-era DHS secretary Jeh Johnson who sought to flout due process. The Obama administration’s response to the influx of Central American migrants in 2014 was to send them back to their countries of origin as quickly as possible. In order to do so, it set up detention camps to process orders for deportation quickly, as the New York Times reported. These camps are not unlike the ones the administration is reportedly preparing to construct.

As the current administration moves to expand family detention in order to deal with a crisis of its own making, Rewire.News spoke with Angelina about her experience to shed light on what it can mean to hold parents and their children in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Angelina told Rewire.News, through an interpreter, that she wants people to understand how desperate it feels to be detained without access to an attorney and with no knowledge or understanding of where your case stands or how long you will be detained. Indeed, many sign their own deportation orders because of the “crushing depression” of being detained for so long. She also wants people to expand the ways they talk about family detention and family separation, centering those most affected.

“[E]ven when one person, like my husband, is detained, it’s like the whole family is there. Our heart is there. We experience the stress and fear of not knowing,” Angelina said. “Being in detention doesn’t just affect the person in detention; it affects the whole family. And when one family member is detained, that too is family separation.”

Angelina’s Story

In the fall of 2014, Angelina and her young son spent two months at the Artesia “refugee camp” in New Mexico, where she says they experienced “inhumane conditions.” Angelina told Rewire.News that when she arrived at Artesia, the facility was holding “at least a thousand families” and “more were arriving every day.” Some had already been detained for as long as six months, she said.

The New York Times reported in 2015 that officials deported more than 200 refugees to Central America in the first five weeks that the Artesia facility was open. Advocates have anticipated Trump’s “tent cities” will largely function the same way: They are deportation processing centers.

“When we arrived, they put us in quarantine. They said we had lice or that we carried diseases with us. The workers there would use gloves and masks to come close to us or move us. We were kept in very cold rooms; we called them hieleras. I spent five days in the hielera and during those five days, I wasn’t allowed to shower or change my clothes. Psychologically speaking, it was very traumatizing,” Angelina said.

Once in general population, Angelina quickly learned that even basic necessities like food would not be met by the detention camp. Families looked forward to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday because these were essentially the only days when the facility provided food the detained children could actually eat: sandwiches, chips, and cookies. On the other days, the food was “raw” or “too spicy” for the children, meaning they barely ate four days out of the week.

There were also allegations of sexual abuse. Angelina said she did not personally witness or experience sexual abuse at Artesia, but she knew others had and they were afraid to speak out due to fear of retaliation from immigration officials.

For ten days Rewire.News attempted to confirm with ICE’s office of public affairs the specifics of Artesia’s quarantine process and food schedule but was told that, because “this was years ago” and “no one on the press team now covered this issue then,” that it would “take some time.” The agency has yet to respond.

Dr. Satsuki Ina, a psychotherapist for over 40 years with firsthand experience in family detention, told Rewire.News, “What is really at the core of the immigration system in the United States is this insipid, deeply entrenched level of racism that sees immigrants of color as a threat to white Anglo Saxon Protestant families, which then leads to direct attacks on immigrant families.”

For years now, there has been an uptick in the number of indigenous people migrating to the United States from Central America. When Angelina was detained at Artesia with her son, she witnessed an indigenous woman from Guatemala forced into a shower by guards at the facility.

“She had not showered for a few days because in her country, she was taught that when you menstruate, you don’t get wet, not even your hand, so you don’t shower and you should not be seen by men. It’s a cultural thing where she was from, but the guards didn’t care,” Angelina said.

The Guatemalan woman did not speak English or Spanish, and could not communicate with the guards to explain why she was choosing not to shower. When another woman at the facility explained to the guards for her, the guards laughed, Angelina said.

“Artesia was a military base, so all the showers were open and everyone could see each other. They put her in the shower, saying she was silly and unclean,” Angelina recalled. “They laughed at her; they laughed at her private parts. They did not respect women, and they did not respect different cultures. This was a human rights abuse.”

These violations are not only reserved for adults in family detention facilities. As other detained people have reported, when a person experiences an illness in detention, no matter how serious, they are often told by officials to simply drink water. Angelina told Rewire.News that when children at Artesia became ill, officials told their parents to just give them more water. One woman was so alarmed by the failure of the facility to provide care for her severely ill son that she chose to “self-deport” in order to get him care in El Salvador.

Angelina, who is no longer in detention, had used social media to stay in touch with more than 2,000 women who have been detained in the United States, before deleting her account for safety reasons. It was only after Angelina’s own release from detention that she reconnected with the woman who self-deported.

“I learned that when she went back to El Salvador, she took her son to the hospital and he died. In the autopsy, she learned that he didn’t receive adequate medical attention [in detention] and by the time he got to the hospital in El Salvador, he was in critical condition. He had asthma and pneumonia and by the time he was at the hospital, it was too late,” Angelina said. “All of the women I stay in touch with tell me heartbreaking stories. It is clear to me that their children are suffering the consequences of detention.”

This is also true of Angelina’s own son, who is now 10 years old. After their release from Artesia, the mother and son sought counseling together to “process what happened” to them in detention. Angelina said that in the years since, her son didn’t talk much about his experience in detention—until his father was recently detained under the Trump administration.

Angelina’s husband was detained while leaving work. He had no criminal record but was detained for two months, she said.

Angelina told Rewire.News that the county in Virginia where her husband was arrested participates in the 287(g) program, which is an agreement between a local law enforcement agency and ICE, effectively deputizing law enforcement officers to act as immigration agents. This means that any interaction an undocumented immigrant has with a police officer can lead to them being funneled into the detention system and possibly getting deported.

This process of othering, exploiting, criminalizing, and discarding immigrants does not happen overnight. Ina told Rewire.News that the groundwork for things like Japanese internment or the mass incarceration of Central American asylum-seeking families is laid well before the actual internment occurs, and it takes the form of rhetoric.

Ina, who was born in a Japanese American internment camp where she was detained with her parents, said she sees the practice of detaining undocumented immigrants in family detention as part of a larger American story, one that frames immigrants as “the other” or a threat. This approach, Ina said, is an attempt to justify the dehumanization and criminalization of immigrant communities.

“We [Japanese Americans] too were considered a public threat, an economic threat, just a threat, and to the American public, that justified our incarceration,” Ina said. “We must pay attention to the language being used to frame these narratives, how damaging it is, and how there is a historical framework for using this rhetoric to put people in prison camps. Today, there isn’t anyone who doesn’t see that what happened to Japanese Americans was wrong, it’s written about in school textbooks as wrong. The same people justifying Trump’s policies today will later find themselves on the wrong side of American history.”

Angelina’s husband has since been released, but at the time of our interview he was still detained and her primary concern was how these experiences were affecting her 10-year-old. “My son asks me, ‘Is papa being treated the way we were in detention?’ He’s very scared and worried about how his dad is being treated. He cries at night and asks me if his dad is going to be deported. He is very sensitive to this situation.”

“I think it’s bringing up a lot for him,” Angelina added. “He’s reliving his experience in detention through his dad.”

As Angelina noted, there are policies in place that keep families separated from their detained love ones: Detention centers generally require a government-issued ID to visit the facility. For undocumented family members who have loved ones in detention, this means there can be no visits.

“It’s cruel. It’s family separation. You don’t even have a chance to say goodbye if you know they will be deported,” she said. “More than anything, I want people to know how psychologically damaging this is to all of us, but especially to children. This whole system harms us. It causes us to suffer. Family detention centers should not exist.”

We all want to invest in our children and ensure they’re able to live up to their full potential. Whether by choosing the best schools or investing for college, as parents we are constantly evaluating our child’s needs.

With regards to their health, we also invest in their future by ensuring that they receive a healthy diet and get enough activity in their day. And while we first think about health as it relates to diet and nutrition, it’s important to not overlook your children’s dental health.

As we commonly remind our adult patient, your oral health can affect your total body health. This is true for our pediatric patient population as well. While bi-annual check-ups are an essential part of investing in your child’s oral health, that is only part of the picture. As with anything in parenting, it’s also important to guide your child to independence and the sustainability of good habits. Below we will outline other healthy oral habits that will benefit your child in the long run.

Build an oral health routine EARLY

The phrase “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is closer to the truth than many people like to admit. It’s important to begin a comprehensive oral health regimen with your child early so the habit is engrained before they reach those defiant toddler years. This includes getting you infant used to something being in their mouth. Use a wet washcloth to gently wipe off the gums after a nighttime feeding. As they start to grow teeth, transition to a child-sized toothbrush with toothpaste and brush twice a day. Mouthwash isn’t encouraged until the elementary school years since it takes significant coordination to swish and not swallow, but when you think your child is mature enough to use it, incorporate that into their nightly routine. By the time your child is old enough to brush their teeth on their own, they should be in such a set routine that it would be weird to not brush their teeth at night.

Decrease the fear

While we love to see all our patients, we know everyone is not as excited to see us if it means going to a dental appointment—kids in particular. A recent poll indicated that one third of all adults admitted to not seeing the dentist in the past year. In addition, childhood cavities effect approximately 42% of children aged 2 to 11, and when left unfixed can result in damage to the gums and jaw that will follow them to adulthood. In order to combat these statistics, it’s on both the parents and on dental professionals to ensure your child is having a good experience and doesn’t suffer unwarranted anxiety about the visit. On our end, we make the visit as inviting as possible and interact with the child throughout the visit to reassure them of what we are doing. We ask parents to not project any anxiety on their children and possible offer an incentive for coming. Whether it’s a trip for ice cream (don’t forget to brush your teeth after!) or a small toy or gadget, having something to look forward to can make the whole process more enjoyable.

Make it fun

We previously discussed how important a tooth brushing routine is, but one component that can really make it stick is making the experience fun. Whether that’s a special trip to the store to pick out a new toothbrush with their favorite character on it, or toothpaste in bubblegum flavor, don’t let adult rigidity get in the way. The bedtime routine can also be a great opportunity to invest in time together and create memories. Try letting your child brush your teeth before you brush theirs, or make up silly songs together to pass the time. If you child looks forward to their oral health routine, it increases the likelihood it will stick.

Investing in your child’s oral health is an investment in a happy future. From brushing to braces and everything in between, your child’s smile is an import social aspect of their life. Keep it bright and white for life by implementing a solid plan early.

Today on 2nd April 2018, World Autism Day, I want to present the newest award I got for my blog. It’s another community award, the Sunshine Blogger Award. I received this award from Aivanther over at TheDialyRager. Thank you so much for this! I’m flattered by the fact that I got another community award on top of all the flattering words that are being said about me. Like in this article by Sheikah Plate about “To Thine Own Self Be True.” . In any case, I think we should focus on the award too. So, it’s answering and asking questions time.

The Rules of the award

Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to their blog.

Answer the 10 questions the blogger asked you.

Nominate 10 new blogs to receive the award and write them 10 new questions.

List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

Questions to answer

What is your name?

NekoJonez, that’s the easy answer. If you want my real name, it’s Pieterjan. But, if you can’t prounce it, I prefer that you say “Jonez” to me.

The “n” is said like the “n” in pencil. It isn’t said like the “m” in mother. That’s one of the biggest mistakes. Also, the “a” is long. The “a” is spoken like in Halo. Longer A.

What is your quest?

My personal quest is to enjoy life as much as I can. To be amazed and to experience everything I want to experience. But mostly it’s to entertain and support people I care about.

My quest on my blog is to educate and tell my story in the vast world of video games. A story about a casual retro game collector who enjoys playing casual games and games forgotten by the masses. Also, it’s to have fun with my blogging friends from over the world.

What is the air speed of an unladen swallow?

As fast as it’s body is allowing it to go!

Dysentery or Cholera?

For real? Talking about “pick your poison.” But, thanks to modern medicine, I don’t care that much since it can both be cured.

Why do you blog?

I don’t know where I told this story before, but let me start from the beginning. I’m part of a pretty small direct family. My parents, 2 uncles, 4 aunts, 2 cousins, my grandparents from my mother’s side and my sister. Oh, and my pet cat Sparta.

But since most of us work in education or in the social sector, our network of family friends is huge. Also, if you go look into my actual family, I have family living in the Netherlands.

So, at family parties I have to explain the same question all over again. What I was up to and things like that. I was so tired of that question 8 years ago, I started to blog about my life in Dutch and share it with friends and family. Here and there I wrote gaming articles and they actually took off.

Due to certain circumstances, I decided to delete my Dutch blog and take 6 months off blogging. This all happened in 2013. Yet, in May of 2013; I started to really miss being able to write about games. Since it’s my passion after all.

So, in may of 2013, I published my first English review of Tomb Raider. Now, I started my 5th year on this blog but in reality I have been writing blogs for 8 years. Now-a-days, I mostly write about video games because I know the most of that subject and I just enjoy writing about it.

It’s a great way to share experiences and stories. It’s an amazing way to talk about the games I played and to keep a sort of public diary about the games I have played and when.

What game made you wish you had brain bleach?

In terms of a good game, A Hat In Time. I wish I could experience that game all over again without any memories about it.

In terms of bad games, well, the games on this list say enough. In that article I talk about the 10 worst games I have played since then.

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

That’s a trick question! In which game do you mean? I think you can find her in a bedroom with Waldo.

Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle?

Well, for some reason I nearly always go with the grass types in Pokémon starters. Sometimes with the fire one and very rarely with the water one. And one random NPC dialogue from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl keeps sticking in my head.

In there, they say the people who choose for grass Pokémon are calm and laid back people. I honestly think that I’m that kind of person.

Worst game you have actually completed?

I rarely complete games. I even have trouble beating games to be honest. My collection spans over 2,000 titles and I keep expanding it. Each free moment of my time, I try to get a game or two closer to the beaten or completion status.

So, if I have to talk about the worst game I have actually beaten; I think I have to refer to the brain bleach question. I have beaten on some of the games on that list…

What’s your guilty pleasure game?

I don’t feel guilty at all playing games. There are some games not meant for my demographic, sure. Okay, there are some games in my collection I got from my sister like some Barbie, Winx Club and other “girl” games.

But, I honestly enjoyed some of them. Heck, I have reviewed one of the games back in 2014; Barbie Secret Agent for the GBA. As long as a game is fun to play, why would it matter if I’m the target demographic or not?

Look, there isn’t a game I feel guilty playing. If a game interests me, I play it. If you limit yourself in “oh this game is about some girl/boy show and I’m of the opposite gender so it’s going to be boring…” – thoughts, you are missing out! As a boy, I have played games that I enjoyed quite a lot which are meant for girls. And I can say with 100% certainty, that my sister can say the same things about the games where the player base is more male. Like she enjoys playing Age of Empires.

I adore when I can play a game in a genre or style I haven’t experienced a lot since that way I get introduced to a new style of games and more types of games to look out for to add to my collection.

My ten winners

Sheikah Plate – I really need to try one of your recepies!

Triform Trinity – My dude, my man! You deserve this one.

Games With Coffee – I drink mine with milk and sometimes sugar!

Aluna – We should do another stream one day, brother!

Reaper Interactive – Love your stuff mate!

Power Bomb Attack – I want to be on the podcast as a guest one day? May I?

AdventureRules – When will be the 2018 Blogger Blitz event?

LightingEllen – Let’s snow punch those blogging thieves together!

Falcon Game Reviews – I wish I had more time to read your awesome stuff

Anjim Plays & KillerRobotics – For your continued support my man.

Okay, I kinda cheated and put 11 on my list. In addition to that, I took 10 other people I really enjoy that weren’t on the list from Aivanther. A few of good blogging friends are on there!

So, now you need my ten questions I guess. Here we go:

Explain as poorly as you can how either Minecraft or Pokémon works.

Explain a game cryptically and let your readers guess which game or game series it is.

Do you sell games you have completed/beaten or do you keep them in a collection?

Which game/genre does interest you quite a lot but you are unable to get into the actual game/genre?

Do you think it’s possible that there will be every an amazing video game movie?

Would you ever consider blogging full time as a job?

I haven’t gotten a Switch yet! Quickly, recommend me a game.

If you had to choose between Sony, PC or Nintendo platforms and emulation DIDN’T exist, which platform would you choose and why?

What is the platform you grew up on and tell us some fond memories.

Tell here a random story you want to share with your readers.

Anyways, that’s everything for today! Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thanks again to Aivanther to give me this award! It means a lot to me to get my work recognized. I hope that the upcoming articles are going to entertain everybody! I hope to be able to welcome you in another blog but until then, take care and have a great rest of your day!

The final verse

Despite being the first title in the Yakuza franchise to be developed from the ground up on PlayStation 4 architecture, boasting the new and improved Dragon engine, Yakuza 6 isn’t the new start for the series that you would imagine it to be – it is actually a dramatic ending to the series as we know it. And despite all of the added gloss that comes with the jump to being fully next-gen, the game manages to maintain all of its character and madness – perhaps even packing in even more than usual.

Game: Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

Developer: Sega

Publisher: Sega

Reviewed on: PlayStation 4 (Review code provided)

The Song of Life is the swansong for longtime protagonist Kazuma Kiryu – the Dragon of Dojima. Without giving too much of the story away, Kazuma has returned from paying his dues in prison only to find that his “adopted” daughter Haruka has gone missing and been involved in a tragic accident. He sets out to investigate and finds a lot more trouble than he anticipated – including being unwillingly dragged back into the Yakuza world that he was happy to have left, and discovering a baby that needs his protection. Having been embroiled in epic clan wars and power struggles over the years, this sixth title takes a surprising – and thoroughly refreshing – turn towards a much more personal story.

However if you are new to the series, Sega have done a commendable job recently to make everything far more accessible. Firstly, last year’s Yakuza Zero was a prequel which served as the perfect first stop for anyone who had yet to jump into the world of Yakuza. Then Yakuza Kiwami and the upcoming Kiwami 2 have re-made the first two games in the series, via the new engine. And even here, in the final part of Kiryu’s story, you could easily start from scratch, thanks to the reminisce options in the main menu – allowing you catch up with the most important past events via short digest essays.

With each entry into the series, the Yakuza games have seemingly got more complex and more over-the-top. Indeed, Song of Life is the first game since 2009 to feature only the one playable character, and as such it possesses a far more focused main story than the last three or four instalments. Each title has always felt jam-packed with things to do – be it the main story, side missions or the myriad of distractions scattered throughout – but sometimes that has been a real hinderance that has made each game feel bloated and unnecessarily drawn-out. By streamlining certain aspects, Yakuza 6 feels quicker, sleeker and much more compelling to play.

This is all helped greatly by the fact that the new game engine cuts out around ninety percent of the loading screens from earlier titles. No longer will there be loading screens for entering every single restaurant or shop – we instead get seamless transitions into combat or buildings, even allowing your fights to spill over into nearby convenience stores, if you decide to take it there. It makes each of the two main playable areas feel far more open, allowing quicker and easier exploration.

These two areas are the series regular Kamurocho (Sega’s take on the real-life Kabukicho red light district of Tokyo), and the new small town of Onomichi in Hiroshima. The two different areas provide a stark contrast between small-town and big city life, without ever becoming so large an open world so that one feels overwhelmed by the options of what to do or where to go. These locations each have a strong personality, and both are fascinating to explore. Kamurocho will feel familiar enough to series veterans, but also ever-evolving – with new sights, shops and experiences to uncover as you wander around. And in its own way Onomichi plays a perfect foil to that bustle and excess. A sleepy harbour town, harbouring a dangerous secret.

Without the aforementioned excessive loading times, combat feels more dynamic and immediate – you can be approached by enemies and thrown into battle at the drop of the hat, or choose to pick fights for yourself as you please. The fighting system has been streamlined much like other elements of the game. With only Kazuma to fight as, there is only one fighting style to learn and master – although your skills and attacks are all upgradeable with a fairly comprehensive XP levelling system. New finishing moves and context-specific attacks can be purchased, along with other social skills that will help with the variety of mini-games to take part in around each of the two locations.

A new ultra heat mode is built up through successful attacks and allows you to take advantage of high-powered moves and temporary invulnerability – both of which are highly useful for some of the boss battles or larger multi-opponent brawls that you will come up against as you progress. This can however make some of the supposedly harder fights feel a bit too easy, especially if you are quite invested in completing the many side quests which will help you to accrue XP, and therefore upgrades, much more quickly. There are three different difficulty settings in-game however, and these do really make a difference between just playing through to enjoy the story, or being seriously challenged by some gruelling fights.

I shouldn’t speak about the combat for too long however, as many of the most memorable moments through the history of the franchise have come from the crazy side quests and unique mini-games and distractions. Whereas the main story in Yakuza 6 is a very personal and emotional arc, the side quests always lend a deal of levity to proceedings. None are especially serious – many are laugh-out-loud funny. Whether you are chasing ghost pirates away from a local graveyard, helping a young girl find merchandise from her favourite singer or stopping a budding Youtuber from performing dangerous Jackass-style stunts, they offer short and amusing diversions.

There is also the usual selection of mini-games to occupy your time, such as Mah-Jong, Karaoke and baseball batting cages, but many new additions or tweaks to old favourites have been made to offer even more depth. The Sega gaming arcades not only offer classics such as Outrun and Hang-On, but now include full versions of Virtua Fighter 5 and Puyo Puyo (which can also both be played in multi-player mode with a friend). I was disappointed by the lack of UFO Catcher machines though – as in my own time in Japan I became quite addicted to these, and they have always been in past titles. Thankfully this is a minor inconvenience, far outweighed by the many other new additions.

The almost RTS-like Clan Creator mode sees Kazuma building up his own gang of locals to fight back against an evil group that is taking over the city. You recruit, level up and deploy your troops like a general, taking on waves of increasingly more difficult enemies. A baseball management mode offers a similar take on that favourite past-time, tasking you with building up a terrible local team into a force to be reckoned with. Even the regular Hostess clubs have been given an overhaul, featuring a new card-based conversation system whereby you can try to win the affections of your chosen maiden. Add in a rather risque live chat mini-game, a very arcade-like spear fishing mode and a Cat Cafe which Kiryu is himself responsible for populating with an army of kitties, and there is plenty to keep you occupied aside from the main storyline – if you so wish.

A quick mention should also be made to the improved visual fidelity of the whole experience. Whilst there is a massive gulf between the cookie-cutter NPC faces and the featured main characters, there is a marked improvement in textures all-around. This is illustrated best on the rather large selection of characters who are modelled on real-life actors. Beat Takeshi plays a fairly large supporting role – in his usual understated, yet endearingly eccentric way – along with several other recognisable Japanese actors. One street gang is made up almost entirely of real New Japan Pro Wrestling superstars, including current IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada. These faces are all very detailed and expressive, which when coupled with the more fluid animations and higher-resolution environments, make Yakuza 6 a more authentic virtual trip to Japan than ever before.

VERDICT

It will always be difficult to sell a sequel like this to gamers who have never before dipped their toe into the series. It would be a mistake to be put off by the large number six that you see on the box though people, this is one of the most captivating and content-rich adventures that I have played in quite some time – and can be enjoyed thoroughly even with no prior knowledge of the story. With so many side quests and mini-games, pacing has always been an issue in past Yakuza games, but the absorbing nature of the main plot made The Song of Life feel like it never had time to slow down. By paring away unnecessary additional playable characters, disposing of multiple fighting styles and focusing on a more character-driven story than prior entries, we are left with a far more compelling tale – one in which I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next. Whilst this may be the last outing for legendary hero Kazuma Kiryu, the future is certainly bright for the Yakuza franchise as a whole.

RL Grime is back with new music for the first time since dropping his sophomore album NOVA last year. The new track with graves, “Arcus,” is also the first release out on RL’s fresh new imprint, Sable Valley Records.

“Arcus” isn’t a particularly complex track, but it’s wildly beautiful. Swelling melodies and harmonies characterize the track, which for the most part is pretty understated. The drop is a flurry of synths and sounds, with pounding drums and an addictive vocal sample, all of which only add to the inherent emotion found in the track.

Who would have thought that in 2019 some of the best future bass would be from the guy that made “Core”…

Check out “Arcus” from RL Grime and graves below, out now on Sable Valley.

On “Property Brothers” this week, Jonathan and Drew Scott take a couple back in time to their childhood home with a daring mission: Can they make an old house new again?

In the episode titled “Country Chic for a New Generation,” Caroline and Gerald are living in a farmhouse in Ontario, Canada, with two grown kids. But now as they look toward retirement, they want a place of their own that’s not so remote—one where they will have plenty of room for their many antiques, and to entertain friends and family. They have $925,000 to spend in total.

Inspiration strikes once Caroline mentions her mother had recently moved to a senior facility, leaving Caroline’s childhood home empty and up for grabs. They haven’t tried to sell the home yet, Caroline explains, because “it needs a lot of work.”

“A lot of work?” Jonathan asks, eyes lighting up. That’s his specialty! So the four of them go over to the family home to check out its potential.

Caroline is dubious—she knows it’s dated, and most of it, including the green shag carpeting and bucolic wall mural, look like they came straight out of the ’70s. Because they actually did! In fact, the kitchen cabinets, which she’s always hated, look more like they came out of the ’50s. But when Jonathan talks about how it could be updated and still keep some of its familiar charm, she’s intrigued.

She checks with her sisters to see if they would be on board with the project, and they’re all for it. The home, and the 3 acres it sits on, have a value of $800,000, and Jonathan says he can make it look like vintage new for $125,000. It’s a deal!

Here’s how the Scott brothers bring this old home into the present day, and the lessons we can all learn along the way.

Bigger tiles = less grout to clean

Bigger tiles means there’s less grout to clean.

HGTV

Caroline explains that one of her least favorite chores as a child was cleaning the bathroom walls and floors, because they had very small tiles, and it was nearly impossible to keep the grouting between them clean.

Jonathan explains that although small subway tile has come back into fashion for bathrooms, Caroline is absolutely correct about how difficult it is to keep the grouting clean. So he promises, and delivers, updated tiles with minimal seaming … and grout.

Repurpose antiques

Gerald turned an antique dresser into a charming bathroom vanity.

HGTV

Gerald and Caroline have a lot of antiques they’d like to keep and use in the new design. Only how?

Gerald, for one, comes up with a way to use an antique dresser that the Scotts, and everyone else, absolutely love. He turns it into a bathroom vanity, with a modern basin on top and a faucet that looks like an antique pump. Jonathan sees it as the perfect way to give the room a chic vintage feel, without sacrificing updated fixture quality.

Also, since the antiques have a lot of detail, Jonathan keeps any new pieces neutral and simple so as not to make the rooms feel cramped and fussy.

Put up shelves to hide flaws in the wall

Jonathan Scott updates the 1950s kitchen by about 65 years.

HGTV

There’s a vertical crack in one wall where a wood beam was removed. Jonathan tells Caroline that they can “mud” it up, but it will only crack again later, so he suggests building a floor-to-ceiling shelf of reclaimed wood to cover the crack.

That sounds just fine to Caroline, who is eager to have a place to display her collection of oil-burning lamps. “It was a $20 solution,” Jonathan brags.

Jonathan updates the 1950s kitchen by about 65 years.

Do the stars of ‘Property Brothers’ deliver?

Drew and Jonathan Scott jam with Gerald and Caroline in their new-old home. What a pair of cutups!

HGTV

Caroline’s emotions were on the surface as Jonathan demolished and then rebuilt her family home, room by room. She was under no illusion that the dated features should be preserved, but it was just hard for her to see them go. So everyone is quite tentative on the day of the reveal.

Yet when Caroline sees how her old homestead has been opened up and decorated with all the antiques they know and love, she dissolves in tears of joy.

“It feels right,” she declares softly.

“It’s a tremendous job,” Gerald gushes. “It’s more than anything we could have imagined!”

Dogs are almost identical to humans. You share many commonalities with your dog. One of the most notable is that you’re both going to age. When that happens, you’re going to experience some of the same problems. You may begin experiencing joint pains and aches. This can decrease your mobility and make it difficult for you to maintain optimum quality of life. Your dog may very well go through the same thing. The good news is that you can take steps to protect your dogs. By reading Extend pets reviews, you will discover that some joint care products can help. What is Extend for dogs all about and what benefits will it provide? You’ll find out below.

What Is Extend Joint Care For Dogs And How Does It Work?

First and foremost, you should learn a little more about the Extend Nutritional Supplement for dogs. This product is nothing more than a supplement. You’ve probably used supplements for your own health at some point. Well, there are dog supplements as well. Extend is designed to provide the pooch with the nutrients needed to keep their joints healthy and active. The product contains glucosamine, MSM and ascorbic acid. This combination will help lubricate the joints while eliminating those aches and pains. This can help your dog maintain the highest quality of life possible.

This product also includes type II chicken collagen. This helps to ensure that your dog will be able to maintain healthy articular cartilage. Giving your dog Extend couldn’t be easier. After all, it is available in powder form. All you have to do is add the powder to your dog’s food and you’ll be good to go.

Health Benefits Of Extend Joint Care

Like humans, dogs sometimes need supplements to keep their joints healthy. As dogs age, the synovial fluid responsible for lubricating their joints decreases, resulting in pain and poor range of motion.

Another common aging problem linked to decreased levels of glucosamine is poor mobility. This is where Extend Joint Care comes into play, as it contains a natural compound found in the body known as glucosamine. This very important compound helps improve the health of cartilage, a cushioning tissue located between the joints and bones. Like humans, dogs can develop arthritis when they get older.

A previous study, known as GAIT, which stands for Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial, revealed that when glucosamine is combined with chondroitin sulfate, pain associated with knee osteoarthritis is reduced significantly.

Joint Repair

Vitamin C plays a major role in healthy bone development. However, a 2008 study revealed that it could also help decrease bone loss in elderly men. According to a researcher at Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center and senior author of the study, vitamin C affects the bone density in men. The study also focused on women, but no effects on the bone density in the female participants were revealed.

As an “antioxidant vitamin”, vitamin C has the capability of decreasing oxidative stress, which has shown to negatively affect human cells. This basically means that vitamin C can fight against inflammation that causes bone resorption.

While it is unclear whether vitamin C will offer the same effects for dogs, it never hurts to add a supplement to their daily diet. Each serving of Extend Joint Care contains 10 milligrams of vitamin C, which will slow this resorption and prevent further damage to your dog’s bone, cartilage and joints.

Improves Range Of Motion

Most aging dogs exhibit a poor range of motion, which is associated with deteriorating joints and other tissue. While this is just a normal part of the aging process, it is possible to slow the progress of the deterioration. The solution is no other than Extend Joint Care.

Rebuilds Articular Cartilage

Articular cartilage is absolutely essential to your dog’s mobility. This white cartilage is a smooth tissue, which is found on the ends of the bones in the joints. This type of cartilage is responsible for ensuring that the bones are able to glide over each other smoothly and with as little friction as humanly possible. As your dog begins to age, the articular cartilage will shrink to some degree. Extend can help. The ingredients found in this product are capable of rebuilding articular cartilage. In return, this can help your dog move easier and without any pain.

Anti-Inflammatory

Since Extend contains glucosamine, this supplement possesses powerful anti-inflammatory properties. This is very important for a dog that is suffering from stiff, tight muscles. That stiffness is often caused by inflammation. By using Extend, your dog will be able to reduce the swelling. This can help to increase their mobility and dull their pain to some degree.

Greatly Improving Mobility

Whether your four-legged friend is an old dog or a young pup, there is nothing worse than watching him limp around with mobility problems. Maybe he is just old with joint pain or maybe he is suffering from some type of joint disease. Whatever the situation is, dogs are known for running, playing ball, and just having an all-around good time. Well, if you want to get your pet back to that state this is where Extend Joint Care can come in handy.

As you have already seen, this product comes along with a lot of benefits, but perhaps the biggest benefit is the improved mobility. Since the product contains natural anti-inflammatory properties and joint lubricant, it can work wonders on the joints. Not only will your dog seem less stiff than he normally is, but there is a good chance that he might be back and play like his old self again.

No Negative Side Effects

While there are a lot of medications available on the market that can assist with joint pain, many of them come along with negative unwanted side effects. Sure, you want to see your dog move around better with improved mobility, but you don’t want to see in puking or feeling down in the process. When it comes to Extend Joint Care, there has not been any reported negative side effects when administering this supplement. Some pet owners have said that their dogs experienced upset stomachs for the first few days of treatment, but this went away after the dog got used to it.

Improving The Immune System

Your dog’s immune system is without a doubt his most valuable tool when it comes to fighting off diseases and infections. In fact, it is also the human’s most valuable tool as well. This is why it is always imperative to ensure that your dog’s immune system is working in top condition and Extend Joint Care can help with this.

List Of Ingredients And What They Do

To better understand the perks of Extend Joint Care, you should learn more about the product’s active ingredients. The Extend Dog Supplement will provide your dog with glucosamine HCI and MSM or Methyl Sulfonyl Methane. The product also contains ascorbic acid. These ingredients will be explored in greater depth below.

Glucosamine

The body contains glucosamine naturally. It is also available in supplement form. It works similarly for humans and canines. This chemical is responsible for maintaining the health of the cartilage, which is the tissue that cushions the bones at the joints. As your dog gets older, the levels of glucosamine in your dog’s body will drop. It is believed that taking glucosamine supplements can help offset this problem.

MSM

MSM or methyl sulfonyl methane offers a wealth of benefits. It is great for joint problems, but it is also capable of boosting the immune system, fighting off free radicals and supporting proper intestinal functions. MSM is available in supplement form and you can buy it as a lotion. MSM can help repair joints, ligaments and tendons. It can also help form connective tissue. MSM is a good choice for alleviating inflamed and painful joints.

Ascorbic Acid

Ascorbic acid is nothing more than Vitamin C. Vitamin C is very important, because it can help maintain connective tissue. If your dog is experiencing mobility issues, there is a good possibility that vitamin C will be able to help to some degree.

Type II Chicken Collagen

The Extend Supplement also contains Type II chicken collagen. This is a great addition, because it is a vital building block for guaranteeing that the dog’s articular cartilage is healthy.

Extend Joint Care Dosage For Dogs

Extend Joint Care is an amazing product that was specifically designed to ensure the safety of your dog’s joints and help fight aging. While it is not known for producing any unwanted side effects and it was designed for dogs of all sizes, you still need to know how to properly dose your dog. One package will contain thirty tubes within a plastic jar. As far as dosing goes, all you have to do is sprinkle one packet over your dog’s food once a day. Extend Joint Care will work with dry or mixed day food. You can just pour it straight over your dog’s food or you can mix it with water and pour it on your dog’s food.

Whatever the situation is, you probably know your dog better than anyone and know what he or she likes best. Keep in mind that larger dogs over eighty pounds have shown better results with one whole tube, while dogs under eight pounds have shown improved results with just half a tube. Results should start to show up within four to six weeks after administering the first treatment. At the end of the day, Extend is 100% proven safe and effective, so whatever dose you give your pet you don’t have to worry about negative side effects.

How Can I Tell That My Dog Needs Extend Joint Care?

When it comes down to it, many dogs will not need the Extend Dog Supplement. You need to be proactive to determine when your pooch needs to begin taking it. You should start paying very close attention to your dog and his or her behavior. Have you noticed that your dog is a little stiffer than normal? This can be a sign that they’re experiencing stiff joints. You should also consider the dog’s age. When your dog gets older, the levels of glucosamine in his or her body will drop significantly. This can cause many mobility issues. Once your dog becomes a senior, you should definitely think about giving them Extend.

It is also a good idea to monitor your dog’s activity level. Have they suddenly become lethargic? There is a chance that this has something to do with their joints. Giving the dog Extend may help. When experiencing joint issues, many dogs will move awkwardly. They will also refuse to jump up and down the stairs. In some cases, you may actually notice swelling or inflammation around the joints. Some dogs will also develop a bad temper.

Strange movements

Stiffness

Trouble standing

Won’t climb stairs

Inflammation near the joints

Has developed a bad temper

Again, keep an eye on your dog and monitor their activity level. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, you should definitely consult with your vet. If your dog is indeed suffering from joint problems, you should ask your vet about Extend Joint Care for dogs. It could make a huge difference in the long run.

“Produce the FIR copy or issue an unconditional apology!” – Aditya Pancholi hits back at Kangana Ranaut

Aditya Pancholi is emotionally distraught today. The stress of the last few days, Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel’s tirade against the actor and his family has finally caught up with him, leaving him feeling shaken and extremely upset. The actor is devoted to his family. His son Sooraj deleted his Twitter account and the family has been hounded on social media after the allegations the actress made against on Aap Ki Adalat and Barkha Dutt’s The Town Hall TV shows. Today Pancholi talks to Bollywood Hungama but breaks down twice and starts sobbing while talking about his children.

When we ask him why is he so upset, Aditya Pancholi replies, “I am not angry with Kangana but I feel so sorry for this lovely actress. People should take a lesson on what not to do from her. You can’t treat the film industry so badly – a place which has given you your bread and butter! We are one big family and I have been in the film industry for 33 years, my wife Zarina has been here for 40 years and Rakesh Roshanji has been here for 50 years. He’s a pioneer in filmmaking and a legend. My wife has worked with Rakeshji in two films and worked with Hrithik Roshan in Agneepath where she played his mother and she tells me that both of them are gem of persons and real gentlemen. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t. There are so many relationships that don’t work out but you move on. I am talking about what she’s said on these two shows. The onus is on her to prove that what she’s said is right.”

Aditya Pancholi feels that the actress should not talk against Bollywood, from where she earns her bread and butter. “You can’t be so ungrateful and talk such rubbish against it! Do you know what her biggest problem is and where she went wrong? The moment she started speaking good English! It brought her down. She said about me, ‘My mentor became my tormentor’… Just because you have learned English you can’t talk like that. It’s going against you. Angrezi naam ki kulhari apne naam pe, haath mein le rakhi hai. What is she talking about nepotism? Kasam se, I didn’t know the meaning of it before. Kahan nahi chalta hai? Rishi Kapoorji has also spoken about his father and grandfather’s times. Baap apne bachche ke liye nahi karega toh kaun karega? She said Hrithik Roshan is a 43-year-old taking his father’s help. Arre 43 ho ya 83 years, baap baap hota hai! It’s a parental feeling – a love, a bond that parents share with their children. Tomorrow if Kangana ever gets married and she has children and they want to enter the film industry, will she not support them? Or will she say – no join the circus? This is not done! Enough is enough. Don’t play the women card, Kangana. My wife, sister, daughter, mother are all women. There are nice women like Zarina, some women like Kangana and there was a woman called Surpanakha, jiski Lakshman ji ne naak kaati. She was a woman also but Lakshman ji cut off her nose kyun ki woh dusht aurat thi. Aap aurat hone ka fayda uthao, najayaz fayda mat uthao. Aur jis ne tumhe pana di hai, usske khilaaf mat baat karo (don’t talk against those who have given you shelter and protected you).”

Talking a deep breath, Aditya Pancholi adds, “I am talking about facts. When you are saying my daughter Sana is younger than you (Kangana) – prove it! When you say I am your father’s age – prove it! When you say that your passport is made in 1986 prove and showcase other documents with it, like your birth certificate, school leaving certificate etc. to verify that the date on the passport is not manufactured or manipulated. I am talking legally. I am saying what she has said on the two nationally-televised shows – she should prove those allegations. Let’s talk about facts: you say you have filed an FIR in Versova police station, I say forget Versova – show the FIR copy from any police in Mumbai or India. You (Kangana Ranaut) may have lost it but it will be there in the police records. Police records mein toh hogi. Produce the FIR copy or issue an unconditional apology! Don’t rub me the wrong way because I know her better than her parents and her sister. Nobody was here when Kangana was alone in Mumbai!”

Watch this space for Part II of Aditya Pancholi’s reaction

Improbable? Maybe, but “Mission Impossible — Fallout,” the sixth and latest stunt-filled edition of the Tom Cruise action franchise has topped the weekend box office in North America, outperforming the five earlier “Impossibles.”

The Paramount/Skydance production took in an estimated $61.5 million for the three-day weekend, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations, more than quadrupling the $15 million earned by second-place “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.”

“Impossible” has 56-year-old Cruise, who famously still does his own cliff-hanging, car-rolling stunts, ordered to track down some missing plutonium and find a terror-minded villain. Critics seem to like the film despite its evident weaknesses: Though “often ridiculous,” the Washington Post wrote, the film “works amazingly well.”

Universal’s “Mamma Mia” clung to the second spot for a second straight weekend, though its take was nearly 60 percent below its opening. With a star-studded cast including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan, the film uses plentiful flashbacks to fill in the story of Streep’s carefree character on the only Greek island with a built-in ABBA soundtrack.

In third was Sony’s “The Equalizer 2,” with Denzel Washington again playing a former black-ops agent — and now low-profile Lyft driver — drawn into action to avenge a friend’s death. It took in $14 million.

Fourth spot went to another Sony film, “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” at $12.3 million. The animated comedy, whose voice cast includes Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez, follows Count Dracula and his family as they get away from their hotel for their own vacation.

In fifth was a new release, Warner Bros.’ family-friendly “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies,” at $10.5 million, which Variety called slightly disappointing given the film’s 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The first feature film based on a popular animated series, “Titans” has a voice cast including Kristen Bell, Will Arnett and Greg Cipes.

Rounding out the top 10 were:

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” ($8.4 million)

“Incredibles 2” ($7.2 million)

“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” ($6.8 million)

“Skyscraper” ($5.4 million)

“The First Purge” ($2.2 million)

Various start dates for the Anthropocene have been proposed, corresponding with the Holocene calendar and ranging from the beginning of the Agricultural Revolution 12,000–15,000 years ago, to as recent as the 1960s. As of June 2019, the ratification process continues and thus a date remains to be decided definitively, but the Trinity test of 1945 has been more favoured than others. In May 2019, the AWG voted for a starting date in the mid 20th century, but the final decision will not be made before 2021.

Court terms Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Chammak Challo’ as derogatory; Vishal Dadlani reacts

Back in 2011, the Shah Rukh Khan film Ra.One hit screens, but what became an instant hit was the track ‘Chammak Challo’ that featured Kareena Kapoor Khan. However, in a recent ruling, a Thane court presided by Judicial Magistrate RT Ingale has ruled that the usage of the term ‘Chammak Challo’ amounts to “insulting a woman’s modesty”. This ruling came after a woman had moved the court on January 9, 2009 when while returning from her morning walk with her husband, she stumbled on a garbage bin which the accused had kept on the staircase. In her accusation, the woman alleged that the accused yelled at the couple, and, also called her a “chammak chhallo”.

While the Thane court upheld her case, saying the accused had indeed committed an offence under section 509 of IPC (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), Vishal Dadlani who penned the 2011 track ‘Chammak Challo’ for the Shah Rukh Khan film Ra.One commented, “No one should harass anyone and I hope the lady who has been troubles is all right and that she follows through with prosecuting this chap. Well, in the case of our song in Ra.One, it was a husband, singing to his wife. She was dancing with him, and also sang along. Where mutual, consensual, and within a relationship, surely a little playful teasing is permitted? Although given our current political scenario, perhaps I should apologise now, before some lunatic files an FIR. I’m deeply sorry if anyone was offended in 2011, and waited this long to realise it.”

Lyricist Manoj Muntashir who has written some of the most aesthetic lines in recent times feels there is nothing wrong with calling a woman ‘Chammak Challo’. “To my understanding, there’s nothing offensive about calling a women ‘Chammak Challo’. It’s a harmlessly mischievous way to praise a woman’s looks. I have not met one girl in my life who feels demeaned about being called ‘Chammak Challo’,” opines Muntashir.

He feels, more than the words, it’s the intention behind them that makes all the difference. “Offence lies in the undertone and the way they are being said. If spoken with a certain disgrace, a neutral world like ‘jawani’ sounds uncomfortable. Besides, if ‘Chammak Challo’ is indecent, what about ‘Katto Gilahri’, ‘Patakha’ and ‘Sexy’…??? Are these going to be next in the line of ban?”

Muntashir feels we are become a nation of protesters. “Can we please stop being offended by anything and everything? We are a nation where beauty and looks have been celebrated since ancient times. Millions of pages have been written to acknowledge female charm and most of them are a part of our esteemed literature. Can we ban ‘Padmawat’ where the killer looks of Rani Padmavati have been described in a very graphical fashion? Every period has its own idioms and phrases. Chammak Challo is today’s language. All said and done, I respect the court of law and accept their Verdict with utmost faith in the judiciary.”

Writer Juhi Trivedi who penned some of the most progressive screenplays in recent times including Vicky Donor and Piku says, “Yes ‘Chamak Challo’ can be offensive, depending on the context. So it’s important that people understand the subtle nuances of language…the use and misuse of the words. I accept and respect the court’s decision… however, if any person wishes to disrespect another, he will find some other word…language is a big ocean. Even if everyone is educated…no one will express in literary jargon in day today conversations… colloquial words and slangs will always be a part of our spoken language. Having said that, in an ideal society, no one should talk to each other in a derogatory manner… be it to a woman or a man. Sab achchi bhaasha ka prayog karien. Gandhiji ke teen bandar.”

TLC

“Trading Spaces” is back! Yup, the TLC home makeover show that got the whole genre rolling has returned.

The show, which first aired from 2000 to 2008, has brought back our favorite host, Paige Davis, as well as carpenters Carter Oosterhouse and Ty Pennington to pitch in on the same nail-biting premise as the original: Over the course of three days, with a budget of $2,000 apiece, two neighbors redecorate a room in each other’s homes, then show off the results (which are met with a range of reactions from delight to tears of, um, surprise).

And the Season 9 premiere, set in Simi Valley, north of Los Angeles, does not disappoint. Titled, appropriately enough, “Not Our First Rodeo,” the episode finds Melissa and her husband, Keith, tasked with making over the master bedroom of Melissa’s sister Michelle and her husband, Ryan. Meanwhile, Michelle and Ryan must overhaul Melissa and Keith’s guest bedroom. Oh, and home designers Hildi Santo Tomas and Doug Wilson pitch in with ideas this episode, too.

Since this one’s all in the family, does that mean that these two sisters already have a handle on each other’s tastes? In finding out, we learn a ton that can be applied (or not) to our own homes, too.

Check out the pearls of wisdom we gleaned watching the redux of this hit show.

Don’t overdo a theme

Before: a bland “gray and grayer” master bedroom

TLC

Since Michelle and Ryan’s master bedroom has two shades, “gray and grayer,” according to Davis, Melissa and Keith decide to revamp the room with an island oasis theme. Wilson comes up with a design that merely suggests surf, sand, and palm trees without being overwhelming. Davis jokes that they want to “have a room that evokes the feeling of Hawaii, but doesn’t vomit the feeling.” Wilson gives it island touches like a colorful print of bamboo, green appliqué quilted pillows, and one small hula girl sitting on a shelf.

After: subtle hints of an island theme

TLC

Make a guest room do double duty

Since Melissa and Keith’s guest bedroom room is occupied by guests for only a small percentage of the time, why not make it so the rest of the family can use the room when no one’s visiting? So reasons Santo Tomas as she instructs Pennington to build a Murphy bed, which can be folded up against the wall when not in use. On the bed’s underside, Santo Tomas creates an original painting by riding a bike through paint trays to serve as modern art at a reduced price tag.

Santo Tomas also decides that this guest bedroom will look much better with a bold print painted on the wall—and the ceiling! Michelle and Ryan do her bidding, but not without reservations (more on that later).

Before staining wood, prep it with a layer of water

When staining a wood dresser for Michelle and Ryan’s master bedroom, Oosterhouse first paints the wood with a coat of water, and then paints the stain over that. According to Davis, this step somehow “makes the stain pop.”

Make old chairs new again

Santo Tomas has found some fabulous Mid-Century Modern chairs in a thrift shop, but they’re upholstered in a faded raspberry-colored fabric that doesn’t fit the MCM theme of the guest room she’s designing. So she transforms the chairs with slipcovers in a cheery shade of lime green. Voila! What’s old is new again.

Recovered chairs and walls with a big, bold print

TLC

How does this ‘trade’ turn out?

Well, Michelle and Ryan are thrilled with their made-over master bedroom.

“I’m impressed,” says Ryan.

“It’s a tropical paradise,” Michelle exclaims.

How about Melissa and Keith’s new guest bedroom, with its Murphy bed and wildly painted ceiling and walls?

“It’s very bold,” Melissa says, her eyes filling with tears. When asked by Davis whether those are tears of happiness or horror, Melissa says, “It’s gonna grow on me.”

Here’s to hoping that sisterly love can conquer all.

OMG! Rishi Kapoor gets gag order from family, no more offensive tweets

Post the latest twitter controversy involving a picture of a naked child, Rishi Kapoor has finally been given an ultimatum by his no-nonsense wife Neetu Kapoor. Either he behaves himself on Twitter or shuts down his account.

A very prominent member of the Kapoor family spills all the beans about the ultimatum given to the intrepid Twitter contributor. “Chintu Uncle can’t be gagged by any of us. He has embarrassed the hell out of Ranbir who is just the opposite of his father: opposite in temperament and attitude to social media. Chintu Uncle just loves to let it all hang out. None of us has ever had the guts to tell him to stop. After every embarrassment caused by Chintu Uncle, Ranbir and (sister) Riddhima would plead with Neetu Aunty to put a stop to the excesses on Twitter. But Neetu Aunty would shrug in resignation.”

Now family sources say Neetu Kapoor has finally taken charge. “Enough is enough. Neetu Aunty feels Chintu Uncle’s drunken tweets may land him in jail one of these days. She has given him an ultimatum. Either he shuts down his account or she will filter monitor and moderate every one of his tweets,” says the source, adding that he is left with little choice. “He will have to comply. Neetu Aunty is the only person he’s scared of.”

That, I guess, puts an end to a lot of colourful moments for trolls.

Walking Project

Humans are not totally in charge of assigning significance and value to events that can be statistically measured. The worry is not wether the world will end, as in the old model of the dis-astron, but wether the end of the world is already happening, or wether it might already have taken place. A deep shuddering of temporality occurs. Furthermore, hyperobjectsseem to continue what Siegmund Freud considered the great humiliation of the human following Copernicus and Darwin, Jacques Derrida rightly adds Freud to the list of humiliators – after all, he displaces the human from the very center of psychic activity. But we might also add Marx, who displaces human social life with economic organization. And we could add Heidegger and Derrida himself who in related but subtly different waysdisplace the human from the center of meaning-making. We might further expand the list by bringing in Nietzsche and his lineage, which now runs through Deleuze and Guattarito Brassier: “Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon?” (Nietzsche) And in a different vein, we might add that OOO radically displaces the human by insisting that my being is not everything it’s cracked up to be – or rather that the being of a paper cup is as profound as mine.”

Presently there are many amazing commercial and residential roof renovation companies in Berkeley. These providers provide roof repair , replacement gutters, vinyl siding repair, rows, ice dam removal, infrared moisture detection, maintenance, ice dam prevention et cetera. Should you acquire questions or obtain the desire to improve the visual appeal of your home, you should see a repair company.

There are many competent roofing contractors out there and they can handle large and small projects. They service businesses and all kinds of residences such as townhouses, apartments, condos, and private homes. They can fix any type of roofing such as shingles, flat roofs, tile, and metal. Many roofing companies offer free consultations and estimates, so you should definitely take advantage of that. Meet with a few roofing specialists. Get answers to your questions and compare estimates until you find the best person for the job. Some roof repair companies offer same day repair services, so keep that in mind if you are shopping around. A roof is the most important part of a home or building, so you should get the problem fixed immediately. A poorly installed or damaged roof can cause excessive damage to a building, so find a contractor who can repair your roof quickly.

How to Install Metal Roofs in Berkeley?

Roof repairs are definitely specialized projects. Sometimes they be done by the handyman and homeowner. But qualified tradesmen will repair your roof quickly and thoroughly, so weigh this up if you are attempting the project yourself. Roofs protect you and the contents of your house from the weather, so repairs are vital. If you’re employing someone else to repair your roof for you, only use a licensed roofer that you can trust, and use them again if needed. Licensed roof contractors will mostly offer a guarantee, so look at this as a benefit and take it up because it does ensure that the repair job was done correctly.Roof DegenerationRoofs can degenerate quickly as the result of a storm, or over time due to general age related factors. Neglected roofs are most prone to bad storm damage.I view a lot of roofs and often see leaks that have come from mostly neglect, especially from rusted gutters which are full of leaves and have disconnected from the down-pipes and water going everywhere but where it should. This consequently breeds other problems which encroach on neighbours creating a domino effect. Its not uncommon to be treating one problem for two different households especially in close inner city communities. Its handy to be on a friendly basis with them! So, clean out gutters yourself or get in a roofer for a small price. While you’re at it, cut those overhanging branches. If roof problems still exist, be suspicious that the fall of the gutter is incorrect. Practicality and general knowledge of the laws of gravity are vital here! Some Types of Roof ProblemsAsbestos-cement is really an issue if it’s damaged so due vigilance is a must. For example do not remove any screws without safety wear and it’s probably best left to the roofer. Yet these roofs can be repaired quite successfully, which can be a relief if you are concerned about it. Skylights are a bit of a bother when they leak, which they do when left too long without maintenance and periodic applications of sealant. Our roofing company deals with these often and our best tip here is to use a good tradesman in the first place to install the skylight and ask them for advice on keeping them in the best condition. They too will eventually need replacing, but you will know when if you are on top of the repair. Broken tiles can be the result of stepping where you shouldn’t, and metal roofs can be dented if you don’t follow the screw line so my tip is if you want to fix it yourself, educate yourself on the structure of the roof by getting on the net or reading about the anatomy of the roof structure. Ridge capping covers the two faces of meeting tiles, and if this is loose it needs to be what is called “re-bedded and re-pointed”, again something to be conversant with if you have one of the most popular tiled roofs in Australia. This type of damage to tiled roofs can be hard to spot, but leaks will become apparent with a little bit of neglect. Tile, metal and slate are the most common types of roofing in Sydney, each with their own specific handlings. Metal roofs for new homes have become more in-vogue, due to their ease of maintenance and sleek looks. But they are not immune to repair and will have their own degree or wear and tear.Roof damage is inevitable as a roof is the most exposed part of a house and susceptible to some mighty elements that can come unexpectedly. So ideally build roof repairs into your budget with the rest of the house or even just have a plan worked out in case your roof is suddenly in need of repair.

“The Horror of facing the environment that we created for ourselves.”

— Lewis Baltz

via WordPress bit.ly/2HM3424

The internet is a wild place. One minute you’re talking about sucking dick for water at Fyre Festival, the next you’re being approached about TV series. If you’ve watched Netflix’s documentary FYRE, then you know the story of Andy King, the man who was prepared to go down on a customs officer to release four 18-wheeler trucks filled with Evian water.

“I literally drove home, took a shower, I drank some mouthwash,” King explains in the documentary, completely deadpan.

“I got into my car, to drive across the island to take one for the team. And I got to [the customs officer’s] office, fully prepared to suck his dick.”

It was a bombshell moment in the documentary, and one that’s become intensely viral. He doesn’t want to be known as “the blow job king of the world,” but it has certainly had some benefits. Aside from putting his new star power behind GoFundMes to pay back the workers in the Bahamas, he’s also apparently been approached with at least three TV show offers from notable networks.

“You’re too young to remember this, but in the old world of TV it was The Carol Burnett Showand these fun, light-hearted shows that weren’t all crime-related,” King told Vanity Fair. “You see the attractiveness of HGTV today. People love Flip or Flop or Fixer Upper. Let’s just say it’s going to be a show about hosting crazy events—what it takes to make them happen. There will be cliff-hangers, and you’ll get to follow me around and see how I pull them off.”

He’s also been approached by different water companies, hoping to use his presence in new ad campaigns.

The road to Gesaffelstein’s second studio album, HYPERION, has been a roller coaster. Of course, when the dark prince of techno’s return was announced, the EDM community at large cheered and reveled in the news. And then we received “Reset,” which was accompanied by a hip hop-hating music video. Or was it? It was really hard to tell. Then he released “Lost In The Fire” with The Weeknd as the album’s second single, which ended up being criticized for its lyrics. The final single, “Blast Off” with Pharrell Williams, is a great Pharrell track — but not so much for Gesaffelstein.

All of this is to say that as the album rollout continued, many if not most of Gesaffelstein’s original fans felt themselves becoming alienated by his new music. His new home on Columbia Records certainly had a small part to play in the album’s changing tone, but ultimately, this was not the Gesaffelstein that we had once known.

And yet, now that HYPERION is out in full, it has revealed itself to be a far more complex listen than the vapid pop tunes that had been released as singles. The 10-track album clocks in at 40 minutes, not least of all because of a 10-minute ambient track “Humanity Gone” that serves as the album’s closer.

HYPERION begins with the title track, “Hyperion,” a very intro-focused track that lands somewhere in between M83, Animal Collective, or MGMT. The repetitive synth loop is joined by a simple analog melody that ends up giving it an overwhelming psychedelic atmosphere — one could even say that it’s a bright and hopeful track. It sets a tone that is immediately flipped on its head by the following song, “Reset.”

Whereas “Hyperion” was a beautifully arranged and ever-evolving track that brought many of Gesaffelstein’s strengths to the surface in new ways, “Reset” was comparably far more simple. The main beat for the track begins 10 seconds in and hardly wavers for the remainder of the 195 seconds except for an ambient bridge about halfway through. Immediately, listeners are hit with a dichotomy of sound and so far it’s a very confusing experience.

This is then followed up by “Lost in the Fire,” the first vocal track on the album and Gesaffelstein’s third occasion teaming up with Abel. Even if you weren’t privy to the previously mentioned controversy over the lyrics, the line “while I fuck you straight” is so emphasized that it’s impossible to mix. It stands out so staunchly against the rest of the track, you can’t help but think, “Wait… what did he just say?” If not for the troubling nature of the lyrics, it hurts that it pulls you out of immersion in the track, as well.

After these three wildly different tracks, we come to “Ever Now,” which, while it isn’t labeled as such, is really just an interlude. And yet, despite it being so short, the ambient and inquisitive nature of the track gives it a hypnotic quality that pulls you in and begs of you to want more. Following the first three tracks, HYPERION continues to present tracks at odds with each other, providing for an enigmatic listen, to say the least.

Finally, we come back to “Blast Off,” the collaboration with Pharrell Williams. Curiously, “Blast Off” fits into the album far better than I anticipated when I first heard the single. It’s still incredibly simple and very safe, and still comes off as a better Pharrell track than Gesaffelstein track, but it’s far from the least impressive track on the album so far.

Next up is “So Bad” with HAIM, easily one of the more wildcard tracks on the album. As it turns out, “So Bad” is quite sedative, playing with HAIM’s listless vocals against a mildly mesmerizing melody. It’s ultimately forgettable, which is unfortunate as this album needs every hit it can get.

The other wildcard of the album, “Forever” with The Hacker and Electric Youth, is alternatively a fantastic song with depth that actually does a lot with the comparably listless vocals. The production is brighter with a more varied melody and some actual piano notes thrown in to break up the monotony. Compared to “So Bad,” this is easily the more enjoyable of the two.

Going to the home stretch of the album, we’re presented with three instrumental tracks: “Vortex,” “Memora,” and “Humanity Gone.” Far and away, the final 16 or so minutes of the album are its strongest. While “Humanity Gone” alone is nearly 11 minutes, “Vortex” and “Memora” could have easily been combined into one 6-minute track, as well. The ambiance and dark production are more present here than anywhere else in the album, and it’s sad that it took this long to get here.

It’s actually a neat little trick, too, when you think about it. You’ve spent so much time listening to two-star-out-of-five tracks on the album that when you finally get to the end, you’re met with 16 minutes of greatness. As you come out of it, experiencing recency bias first hand, you think to yourself, “Wow, that album was actually really good,” when in fact, you’re just remembering your favorite tracks because you’ve just heard them.

But to zero in on “Humanity Gone” specifically for a moment, it is truly a phenomenal track. It’s just ten minutes of pure, ambient Gesaffelstein — it’s like swimming in his mind and getting pulled under a rip tide of emotion and swirling ethereal bliss. It’s interesting how the album manages to come full circle back to a more psychedelic ending after such a long string of forgettable singles.

Ultimately, I would give HYPERION a 6.5/10. It’s not a bad album by any means, but aside from the final three tracks, there’s nothing in it that would make me want to come back and listen again. It’s certainly an album that everyone should listen to at least once, if not simply because it is Gesaffelstein, then because it’s important to see how artists change over time — it’s a brilliant lesson in how to accept and deal with deviations from your expectations.
