Also, it came complete with the ceiling assembly and nothing else was needed, unlike some of the other units made by Carrier and Dometic. It was the best rooftop air conditioner for the money of those we researched, plus the ease of replacing a similar unit was taken in consideration. This same RV A/C is sold on this page along with other fine units made by Carrier and Dometic which are also well know for their efficiency and reliability. The choice is yours to decide as to the make and model of your new cooling unit and as they are all installed similarly, this article will work just as well for all of them. After removing the AC shroud by loosening the 4 nuts holding it in place, the old rooftop unit can be carefully removed and lowered to the ground. Airstream A/C Installation PreparationIn some cases the Airstream AC gasket has been treated with a sealant, perhaps several times over the many camping seasons. These sealants usually cause the old rooftop AC units to be stuck in place which requires using a thin putty knife to separate the old gasket from the Airstream roof. Carefully slide the putty knife beneath the old gasket until the unit can be easily removed. Remove any lingering roof coating adhesive with a strong solvent being careful not to let it discolor the area outside of the new gasket contact area. Check for any jagged edges or rough spots which could cause the gasket to allow moisture to seep through. This is a very important step to prevent leaks around the new rooftop AC unit. You are now ready to transport the new unit to the rooftop of your Airstream travel trailer. Unless you are very strong you will need some help with this job. Be very careful if using ladders as it is easy to lose your balance while lifting the new air condtioner. First, remove the new protective shroud to facilitate ease of handling and placement. Installing The New RV Air Conditioner Situating the new rooftop AC unit correctly requires some help to keep from having to go up and down the ladder several times to check both inside, and on the rooftop, to correctly align the new unit. By loosely connecting the 4 retaining bolts through the ceiling flange, you can move the new rooftop unit around until it is evenly spaced in the 14” square duct hole in the Airstream roof.Once you have the new unit in the right spot you can tighten the bolts which compresses the new gasket and insure a watertight seal. If you purchased the optional heating element for your rooftop AC, proceed to install it according to the enclosed directions. This is a simple plug in assembly for electrical connections.Connect the Airstream line electrical wires to the new AC unit by using wire nuts and replacing the cover of the junction box. The ceiling assembly is usually attached by 4 screws to the ceiling flange. Install the new rooftop AC shroud with the 4 retaining nuts. Reconnect the power supply to the Airstream and the job is finished. Using and maintaining your new Airstream ACTest the new unit to ensure everything is working correctly with no circuit breakers kicking off. Now you are ready to stay cool for many seasons to come while enjoying your classic Airstream travel trailer. Good luck on the installation and congratulations on the money you will save by installing the rooftop unit on your Airstream yourself. By doing annual maintenance such as cleaning the coils and oiling the AC fan motor, you will ensure proper efficiency and cooling of your Airstream travel trailer for many years of camping enjoyment for you and your future grandchildren.

In a new interview published today, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg goes long on a wide range of topics including selling data, taking holocaust deniers at their word, fake news, and one simple idea that’s crazy enough, it just might work.
Speaking with Recode, Zuckerberg continued his apology tour that’s followed the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The revelation that Facebook lost control of millions of users’ data and that it ended up in the hands of a shady political consultancy served as a tipping point, reminding the world of the long list of missteps, screwups, and malpractice that have characterized the company’s entire existence. In the months since it first admitted how poorly it handled that situation, Zuckerberg has been on a merry-go-round of stops in Congress, EU Parliament, and press junkets to do damage control.
Recode asked Zuckerberg if he felt that someone should be fired for not thoroughly responding to the Cambridge Analytica situation when Facebook first learned about it in 2015. After acknowledging that it’s a big issue, Zuckerberg said, “I designed the platform, so if someone’s going to get fired for this, it should be me.” The 34-year-old CEO has taken responsibility for the company’s failures on this topic before, but the subject of firing himself awkwardly lingers in this interview.
Zuckerberg and Recode jokingly banter about the great news value that would come from him firing himself on this podcast. Alas, he confirms that won’t be happening today. Recode insists that he’ll probably be okay if he just hung it up right now and moves on to a question about privacy before Zuckerberg interrupts just to circle back and ask, “Do you really want me to fire myself right now?” After more needling, Recode says, “no” and Zuck drops it, saying, “I think we should do what’s gonna be right for the community.”
This seems like a great idea. Through some chummy insider ribbing, the CEO hit on the idea that he really should maybe go, that he’d be fine if he did, and the most important thing is what’s best for the community. At this point, it seems all too clear that firing himself would be a good step in doing what’s best for the community of 2 billion Facebook users, and the larger community of 7.6 billion people just trying to live their lives in this world.
Who knows if Zuck has retained any skills as an engineer, but it’s hard to say he’s been a bad businessman. Facebook’s stock hit an all-time high this month despite its tarnished image because it dug its claws deep into users’ daily lives and it brushes off the consequences of growth. On my list of potential ways to fix Facebook, shutting it down would be right at the top closely followed by losing the algorithmic sorting of the news feed. Since neither of those things will happen, Zuckerberg stepping down would be a worthy consolation prize.
Throughout the interview, the CEO demonstrates some of his worst qualities. For one, he seems incapable of learning from his mistakes. Early in the interview, he pounds on some of his pet peeves and shows that he hasn’t really absorbed or processed criticism. He still gets really frustrated when people construe Facebook’s model of selling advertisers access to users based on their data and its inferences about that data as “selling data.” He still hasn’t grasped that the line between those two characterizations is extremely thin, and he ignores the fact that “selling data” is a good shorthand for what he’s actually doing and the dark implications it carries.
Zuckerberg also gripes about the characterization of Facebook as a media company. He says that he used to call it a utility, but today he prefers “social network” over “social media.” He says that “building a network and building relationships is one of the most core things that people do, and that is an enduring utility that people need.” As always, Zuckerberg speaks about relationships and human contact like a man who’s never experienced either.
He thinks that social networking should be focused on building something “useful and enduring.” That sounds reasonable, but then he gives an example. He says that Facebook has “mapped out all of the people who a person cares about” and then converts its knowledge into a useful product: Facebook Marketplace. Yup, after almost 15 years of crunching data about billions of people on this planet, the most useful thing Zuck comes up with is a place for everyone to buy more shit.
Moving on to the incredibly volatile subject of Facebook’s platforms being used to incite mob violence and ethnic cleansing in places like Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and India, Zuckerberg does his best to avoid taking any responsibility for the role his platform might have played. “It is clearly the responsibility of all of the players who were involved there,” he says. “So, the government, civil society, the different folks who were involved, and I think that we have an important role, given the platform, that we play, so we need to make sure that we do what we need to.”
He’s ignoring the fact that Facebook didn’t do what it needed to do before expanding to markets around the world. He mentions that the company is bringing on more native speakers of languages in problem areas and attempting to better understand local cultures. “It’s often hard, from where we sit, to identify who are the figures who are promoting hate and what is going to… which is the content that is going to incite violence,” he says while failing to acknowledge those are the kinds of questions that should’ve been considered before going halfway across the world and providing a platform that can be used to turn whole societies upside down.
On the subject of fake news, he’s still fooling around with moral relativity that isn’t necessary. I sympathize with Zuckerberg’s reluctance to become a censor of speech or the one that determines what news is accurate. But his company makes determinations on what content users will or won’t be allowed on the platform. Specifically asked about Infowars’ clear spreading of false information with real-world consequences, he still won’t admit that the conspiracy theory-loving outlet could easily be booted from the platform based on its current harassment and bullying policies.
Infowars spread a hoax that the child victims of the Sandy Hook shooting weren’t real and the whole situation was an elaborate plot. That action has resulted in lawsuits by the victims’ parents who’ve endured years of harassment and accusations of being a “crisis actor.” The best consequence Zuckerberg can come up with for Infowars if someone uses his platform to confront a victim of Sandy Hook is “telling them, ‘Hey, no, you’re a liar’—that is harassment, and we actually will take that down.” This is a simple judgment call—Alex Jones uses his platform to harass people in real life. Mark Zuckerberg can’t see his way to making any kind of judgment about that.
Speaking of bad judgment, he decided to pivot to an example of relative facts by talking about the Holocaust. Here he goes:
I’m Jewish, and there’s a set of people who deny that the Holocaust happened.
I find that deeply offensive. But at the end of the day, I don’t believe that our platform should take that down because I think there are things that different people get wrong. I don’t think that they’re intentionally getting it wrong…
ADVERTISEMENT
Okay.
He’s already walked those comments back in a way, clarifying to Recode, “I personally find Holocaust denial deeply offensive, and I absolutely didn’t intend to defend the intent of people who deny that.”
Despite his hired handlers’ inability to train him how to look normal in public, they’ve done a pretty good job of teaching him the art of the evasive answer. Whether testifying before Congress or speaking to a journalist, he stays on message for the most part and he gives answers that carry the illusion of complexity but are really just ways of saying that he doesn’t want to deal with his problems in a meaningful way. Facebook’s still growing, people are still addicted to it, the checks are still cashing, so what’s the real issue?
When asked what single thing he would most like to apologize to the public about, he’s at a loss. “I don’t know,” he says bluntly. But then the old PR muscles kick in and he settles on: “I think that the main thing that I’ve tried to internalize this year is we get that there’s a big responsibility and a lot of things that we need to do better than we are.”
If Zuckerberg is serious about his goals of altruistic community building, he should walk away from the company that’s being used to tear communities around the world apart. He says that Bill Gates is his hero, and he knows it’ll take years to build a philanthropic strategy as well reasoned as the Gates Foundation’s approach. He also says he’s not taking on any personal goals this year because fixing Facebook is all-consuming at the moment. Maybe—and stick with me here—this thirtysomething with some $80 billion could give someone else a try in the driver’s seat and totally throw himself into making those Gates-style charity plans. If there’s one upside to Zuckerberg’s youth, he has plenty of time to follow through on his pledge to give away all of his money.

It’s been a decade since we launched our original Residential Construction Cost Cheat-Sheet and since then it continues to be one of the most searched and read posts in the history of the BUILD blog. We originally developed the cheat-sheet after seeing many shifting and shifty budget conversations. Subsequently, we decided to take the topic of construction costs head-on. Since the Cheat Sheet’s introduction, we’ve been having ever-more informed conversations about construction costs with current and potential clients. Escalating construction costs and protracted permitting timelines amongst most building departments in the Pacific Northwest have made the Cheat-Sheet more useful than ever. As an architecture firm with both feet on the ground, discussing the finances of design and construction couldn’t be more important. The goal was both simple and far-reaching. We wanted to create a straightforward baseline for discussing project costs (simple) and one that our industry could start using to help compare apples to apples (far-reaching).
We released The Residential Construction Cost Cheat-Sheet 2.0 in 2014 during a booming economy that has continued into the present. A roaring economy has its own challenges, though, and the sharp acceleration in construction costs has surprised many architects, builders, and homeowners in the Pacific Northwest.
Now in 2019, we are sensing a slowing market, significant economic challenges, and political turmoil. Further, we are deeply mired in an affordable housing crisis in cities like Seattle, along with permitting challenges that are nearly paralyzing. It’s a minefield of issues for the design and construction industry to navigate with each factor pushing and pulling regional construction costs.
We believe that housing will continue to be created and groups like BUILD LLC, with our 20 years of experience as a firm, can guide that process to continue to have happy clients. We have always maintained that this is best accomplished by being candid from the initial conversation all the way through the process to get the final result. With all that said, it’s timely to update our numbers and so we’re unveiling the 2019 Residential Construction Budget Cheat Sheet.
There’s also a PDF download here.
It’s worth breaking things down further to better understand why we’re seeing construction costs continuing to accelerate, far beyond just typical inflation. Here in the Pacific Northwest, several items have continued to intensify over the last 5 years, while new items have been added. These items, more than others, have fueled the construction cost acceleration.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT REGULATIONS
The requirements around drainage, impervious surface area, and stormwater management have become permitting projects in and of themselves in the Pacific Northwest. The design requirements often introduce additional pages to the drawing set, weeks of extra design work, additional consultants, and time-consuming reviews at the city/county. Civil engineers are now required to provide a design package on a single-family residence that would have been commensurate with a commercial project 5 years ago. The construction involves additional earthwork, costly site measures, and significant increases to site labor — all to support both temporary and permanent measures. All of this has left us with the feeling of literally pouring cash into the ground.
The necessity of geotechnical engineering is almost a guarantee on residential projects now. In the previous decade, a geotechnical engineer was required by the building department on a project only when extreme environmental factors were present (e.g., steep slope, potential slide area, etc). Lately, building departments have added a geotechnical report to their standard permit submittals frequently enough that the geotech has become part of most design teams. This work requires additional site visits, construction inspection/observations, additional coordination, and expensive reports with added cost implications in construction.
We have wonderful engineers we work with so this isn’t meant to disparage them in any way. We’re noting that they are now being pulled into all scales and types of project, and this can simply increase conditions and costs on those projects.
On the permitting side of the equation, far-reaching permit document requirements are adding significant time and energy to the permit process. Whereas the permit review process used to be an evaluation of the construction documents, the permit requirements are now tangential to the point of requiring a set of drawings, and a slew of supporting documentation, unique to the permit process alone (read: not used for construction, but simply hurdles in getting to construction). The additional time, energy, and costs of this are reflected (if not magnified) on site in both time and dollars.
Occasionally, a regulatory agency will misapply land use designations to a property. This could be in the form of a critical area like a steep slope or a potential landslide area, even if neither are present. Having these designations removed from a property requires consultants, reports, and lengthy permit reviews. If the building department doesn’t concur, the only path forward is to agree to their stipulations.
Beyond the land use and building code impacts, the secondary codes for MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, etc.) continue to add gratuitous provisions that make our heads (and wallets) hurt. We’ve discussed this previously, but new electrical provisions (for example) like adding ground fault protection throughout a home rather than to critical circuits adds 5% to an electrical budget. Once you tack on a series of code changes like this, with marginal benefit, your MEP costs can easily be 25% more than just a few years ago.
CLIENT EXPECTATIONS
More so than in years past, we’re noticing higher expectations on behalf of clients. It’s becoming more difficult (and expensive) to attain a level of acceptable completeness. Some of this is just math…as costs increase, it seems like more should be gained with the expense.
We’ve found ourselves in a bit of a Catch-22 here. We very much understand and appreciate that our clients are making a substantial investment in their project. It’s typically the single largest personal investment in their lifetime. For many, it may also be the only time they build new or substantially remodel. Without a doubt, the level of execution in construction should be of very high quality given the investment. We also do not take for granted that our clients trust us to lead them on this journey, including the journey of setting expectations and delivering on them. We greatly appreciate that our clients haven’t been able to find something they could simply purchase to meet their needs and desires, so they are hiring us to make it for them. That is a clear indication that this is very important to them.
Yet, we find this situation needs to be balanced with a reasonable level of execution. Many hands (and overlapping feet and tool belts and equipment) go into making the final product. While we don’t accept even a whiff of substandard work from any of these participants or their part, not every single inch of a project will reach perfection. It certainly could, but that’s a whole different level of budget that we are not promoting. As the cheat sheet above notes, achieving perfection is a 40%+ construction budget addition. In our view, we are achieving “A” quality work. Attaining flawless perfection in every aspect of a project isn’t what we consider to be cost-effective or even sensible. There is an acceptable level that we can agree to and deliver (and we may have another whole blog post on this topic).
VENDORS & SUPPLIERS
A decade’s worth of industry demands has placed most vendors and suppliers into a constant state of being overwhelmed and overcommitted. Subsequently, their pricing continues to increase. And this has a chain reaction. Our vendor’s vendors have supply and bandwidth issues and this effects the whole chain.
Plus, as our region has become a denser metropolis, costs for items like trucking of soil and recycling material have exploded. Not only does our region suffer from detrimental traffic which increases trucking costs linearly, but we have to source and take material further from the City core as property has increased in value.
OTHER & UNFORESEEABLE
There are other factors beyond our control or influence that we are continuing to uncover, or simply get smacked across the head with. For example, due to the amount of infrastructure work in Seattle, every single thing related to concrete (mixing, trucking, reinforcing, pumping) continues to increase in cost at an unimaginable rate. We keep trying to peel the onion on items like this to reign in costs, yet it feels like the more we peel the larger the onion gets. We may use 60 yards of concrete on a project, while 60,000 yards go toward municipal work. We are left feeling fortunate we can get concrete at all.
As a resourceful, cost-effective architecture practice, we’re obviously not fans of unnecessary cost increases. We like to think of ourselves as the group that produces effective and accurate design budgets that complement the elegant and functional homes we endeavor to create. Along with that philosophy, we’ve generated some methods for savvy clients to navigate through and minimize the escalating construction costs.
• Reuse the foundation of an existing home
• Be reasonable with what is sustainable
• Being “green” doesn’t always make sense
• Start thinking of sustainability more as built-in utility rather than as a fashionable trend
• Limit the amount of reviewers/variables on a project
• Find a good team and trust them
• Be reasonable with what is achievable in the finished product and set clear expectations with the builder
(obvious defects get fixed, but ease up on total perfection or get your checkbook out)
Years ago we may have suggested that the ideas expressed above are simply our opinions and that there are different ways to go about designing, building, and financing a project. But with much more experience under our belts and more projects added to the portfolio, what may have been subjective information is moving more into the knowledge-based category. As with any advice, feel free to take it, leave it, or counter-offer.
Cheers from Team BUILD

Remember GT1 races? Cars like the Porsche GT1 and the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR turned in unprecedented lap times around the world. The CLK GTR was built by HWA, a German racing company. Their expertise is being called upon again by Apollo, to help finalize the details of the IE.
White Apollo IE Unleashed in Hong Kong
The Apollo IE (Intense Emotion) is a V12 powered beast that weighs in at only 2,700 lbs. Attention to detail and extensive simulations yielded a chassis that weighs 275 lbs, or 16 times lighter than my 1991 Buick Station Wagon. The team at HWA built every example of the race and street legal versions of many famous cars, so they are the right crew to perfect Apollo’s designs.
A historical moment: In the spirit of staying true to the ethos of Apollo and to the philosophy of the IE, in its efforts to pay homage to our favorite days, the GT1 era, we have created a strategic technical partnership for the final development of the IE with HWA AG. _ HWA AG was responsible for the legendary Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR racing car development and produced all road-going examples of the famous GT1 car. _ Now the team behind the most successful GT1 car of all-time is working on the only modern day GT1, the Apollo IE. _ #IntensaEmozione / #ApolloIE

Cahoon Hollow Beach
Wellfleet
The beach where the locals go! Cahoon Hollow boasts stunning cliffside views of the Cape Cod National Seashore, accentuated with roaring waves crashing onto the well manicured beach. You’ll be able to watch droves of surfers navigate their way back towards the sand, and maybe even spot a seal or two! Though the water may be cooler than bayside beaches, it makes up for it with its Cape Cod charm. Enjoy a drink at the tremendously popular Wellfleet Beachcomber or learn to boogie board and surf on the waves. Note: There are two separate parking lots but arrive early on weekends to secure your spot!
Seagull Beach
Yarmouth
Seagull Beach is a MUST-VISIT for your family when planning your trip to Cape Cod. The beach offers an authentic Cape Cod landscape with white sand and blue water. Harboring Nantucket Sound, kids can swim in the warm water, and play on the beach. Seagull beach is a convenient 5 minute drive from downtown Yarmouth MA, offering a seemingly endless stretch of restaurants, mini golf, ice cream stores, and even an inflatable water park! Less than 10 minutes from the Bayside Resort Hotel, Seagull Beach is the perfect destination to bring your family without the hassle of navigating traffic and other beach goers!
Mayflower Beach
Dennis MA
Perhaps the most scenic beach on Cape Cod, Mayflower Beach offers an endless landscape of white sand, tidepools, and coastline. Voted as one of the best in the United States by Parents Magazine Mayflower is the perfect place to bring your family for some fun in the sun! TIP: Go at low tide– when the ocean recedes it leaves behind a spacious, smooth, and scenic beach that will separate you from other beach goers. Spread out and stake your claim on one of Cape Cod’s best destinations! But go early, though the beach is expansive, parking is limited on weekends and holidays. Luckily, the Bayside Resort Hotel is only 9 miles away and will ensure you’ll have time to sleep in and enjoy the full breakfast buffet!

With warmer weather and longer days, we are always looking for an excuse to get out of the house. While dining al Fresco is a great option for just spending time with friends, sometimes you need something a little different when smaller family members are around or if you want to include your furry family members!
When you’re put on the spot it can be hard to think of fun, new things to do for a night out. To help answer the “what-do-you-want-to-do” endless circle of questions, we’ve prepared the 2018 Spring Bucket List of Outdoor Adventures upcoming events in our metroplex!
Dallas Blooms at the Arboretum: Featuring one of the largest floral festivals in the southwest, the Dallas Arboretum is home to more than 500,000 blooming flowers. This is a great place for your budding gardener to seek out new plant options or to snap a few spring photos for the grandparents!
Safari Nights at the Dallas Zoo: Bring your dancing shoes to the zoo! Throughout the spring and summer bands will be filling the zoo with music. Come for the animals and stay for the tunes!
Friday Night on the Green: If you’re looking for a lazy Friday night spent relaxing with good music, head to Magnolia Green in Fort Worth. This once-monthly concert series is going on its 10th year! In addition to music there’s also food and drink available.
Baseball: Springtime means baseball time! North Texas has both major and minor league teams so there’s something for everyone. Head to Arlington to cheer on the Rangers or be on the look-out for promotional nights at the Roughriders that allow kids to run the bases before the game. Hit the concession stands, and you won’t have to plan dinner for a night!
Dallas Pizza Fest: Have you ever met a kid that didn’t like pizza? Head to the Dallas Pizza Fest to get your fill and to taste samples from more than 20 local and national pizza restaurants. Also, if you have a child that seems to be a bottomless pit, there’s a pizza eating contest with a prize of $250!
Dog Bowl: If your “kids” have four legs and are covered in fur, then head to the Cotton Bowl for the annual Dog Bowl! Here you can unleash your dog and let them run through agility courses, splash in kiddie pools and meet other canine friends. This event is open to dogs of all sizes.
Dallas Children’s Theater: Consistently ranked as one of the best children’s theaters in the country, the Dallas Children’s Theater is a great option for rainy days. The Jungle Book will be featured next month, so get your tickets early for this childhood classic!
Splash Parks: In Texas we know the mild spring weather won’t last long. As it gives way to the brutal heat, cool off at one of the dozens of splash pads in the area. While Celebration Park in Allen is a little bit of a drive, it’s worth the excursion. Boasting over 99 acres, this playground/park/splash pad will keep your kids entertained and, by the end of the day, wear them out!
Six Flags: If everything is bigger in Texas, then Arlington, Texas must have the biggest and fasted rides in the country. Right? For a treat, take your kids to the amusement park and ride the roller coasters until you get dizzy from the fun of it all!
Create your own adventure: One of the best parts of longer nights is the ability to come up with great family adventures on your own. Start your own family traditions that live on year to year. Let us know what you come up with!

In the days following the release of Netflix’s FYRE documentary, only one scene was on everyone’s mind: Andy King’s ridiculous dick sucking story. The tale of how founder Billy McFarland asked King to suck dick in order to release water from customs on the island became a quick meme and made its rounds.
During an interview with Netflix, separate from and after the release of the documentary, King admitted he didn’t even know what a meme was, nor that he was trending. “When someone reached out last weekend and said, ‘you’re trending’, [I was] like, ‘I don’t even know what trending means,’” he said. “People are talking about you… and yesterday people were like, ‘you’re a ME ME’, I’m like ‘What’s a ME ME?’”
Now, after a bevy of TV offers and national attention, King came clean to TMZ that he didn’t even want the scene in the final cut in the first place.
“I went to them and said, ‘Listen, I just talked with my lawyers and some of my creative team and they said, ‘Andy, you got to pull that thing. That can not go into this documentary,’” King told TMZ.
“And when I sat with the director, he said, ‘Andy, you don’t understand: Without that scene, there isn’t a documentary.’ I said, ‘Oh come on, there’s no way.’ They said, ‘Trust me.’ And that is an integral part, as you know, of the documentary itself.’”
Since the documentary came out, and became one of Netflix’s most popular documentaries of all time, King has been offered numerous TV deals, as well as opportunities to cameo in movies and run music festivals.
“I probably wouldn’t be where I am today if it were taken out. I mean how I’ve become this social media hero over a situation like that, I’m in total shock,” he said.

This photo was taken at worlds end in South Australia, about 2 years ago, We were looking for wedged tailed eagles but instead found many of these guys (Whistling kites) we did manage to find 2 wedge tails later that day but the shots we got were not the best because they tend to scare easily, Funny considering they have a wingspan of over 2 meters were as these kite are about half the size. It was a very hot day as you can see on the right of the image the heat haze.

Music festivals are more than just that — they’ve become part of our culture, ever since the first Woodstock took place 50 years ago. Ultra Miami, Electric Daisy Carnival, Burning Man, Coachella and more are household names at this point, and one study looks to better understand the impact of these life-changing experiences.
In a survey conducted by music streaming platform CloudCover, Ultra is the most life-changing experience since Woodstock. This, according to the analysis of 665 festival goers.
82 percent of those who attended Woodstock in 1969 called their experience life-changing. Compared to 65 percent of respondents that believed at least one of the music festivals they attended (between 2011 – 2018) was life changing — it was most commonly Ultra.
Electric Daisy Carnival is close behind, followed by Burning Man, Austin City Limits, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, SXSW and Warped Tour.
The top memorable artists from these music festivals — Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction, Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, and Tiësto.
We’d be interested to see the results of a larger scale study, but the point is that music festivals are impacting our lives in amazing ways. It’s almost festival season! Get ready!

Paresh Rawal hails Supreme Court’s verdict on triple talaq; praises Narendra Modi
August 22, 2018 will be remembered as a historic day. After all, this was the day when the Supreme Court struck down the inhuman practice of triple talaq and called it unconstitutional. It has come as a relief to lakhs of Muslim women who have been rendered homeless and suffer other hardships due to the practice of triple talaq.
While the women who fought tooth and nail on this issue have been lauded, a section of people and media have also given credit for this verdict to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Actor Paresh Rawal, who is also an MP from Ahmedabad, also believed that the Prime Minister is in a small way responsible for this victory. He obviously is happy with the Supreme Court’s decision and at the trailer launch of his film Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi yesterday, Paresh Rawal was asked to comment on the triple talaq verdict. He said, “Narendra Modi is destined to do some great work. Even during his speech on Independence Day this year from Red Fort, he had touched on this burning topic. It’s heartening to know that the Muslim women are finally getting the right that they deserve completely and this is a victory for the country as well.”
After turning MP in 2014, Paresh Rawal has become busy and doesn’t do films as frequently. After appearing in Welcome Back and Dharam Sankat Mein in 2015, he was directly seen this year in the comic caper Guest Iin London, co-starring Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Kharbanda. Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi is a delayed film which the actor began shooting for in 2013-14 and co-stars Vir Das, Rishi Kapoor and Payal Ghosh. It is all set to release on September 15. Paresh Rawal will be then seen in two exciting biggies – Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger Zinda Hai, and in Sanjay Dutt biopic as Sunil Dutt.

The answer to spending less is not coupons or blow-out sales.
Shop less.
That’s it. Yes, it is wise to negotiate the price of things. Take advantage of coupons and deep discounts when they makes sense.
But if you want to save money and improve your finances, shop less.
You don’t get that message often. You don’t need to be a PhD economist consulting the retail sector to understand that we are bombarded every day by marketing messages urging us to buy, buy, buy. And we do. Way, way, too much for most of us.
Take, for example, clothes. The U.S. apparel industry today is a $12 billion business and the average American family spends $1,700 on clothes annually, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The dollar figures are of little significance since it accounts for just 3.5 percent of a family’s expenses, on average. What is significant is whether that money is spent on need or waste. The answer is, largely, waste. In 1930, the average American woman owned nine outfits. Today, that figure is 30 outfits — one for every day of the month.
What about the rest of it? Much of it is hoarded, and that hoarding is expensive. The Daily Mail reports that women in the U.K. buy half of their body weight in clothes each year, and the average woman in England has 22 unworn items in her closet.
To warehouse these growing collections, we need more space. So we build and buy bigger homes. The median size for newly constructed house today stands at 2,478 square feet, up from 983 square feet in 1950, even as family size has shrank during those years. Of course, clothes only fill a tiny portion of these mini-mansions. The rest of these ballooning abodes require lots and lots of shopping for furniture, decor, kitchen accouterments, toys and electronics. More shopping and shopping ensues — so much so that all this stuff overflows into basements and attics. One fascinating University of California Los Angeles study of middle-class American families found that three in four garages are so packed with stuff that there is no room for a vehicle.
When these auxiliary spaces in our homes are loaded, the overflow heads to self-storage units.
The Self Storage Association reports that Americans spend $24 billion each year to store their stuff in 2.3 billion square feet of these units, an industry which has proven to be the fastest growing segment of the commercial real estate industry over the past four decades. The Wall Street Journal calls the industry “recession resistant.”
Another sector that has blossomed through recent economic turmoil is the organizing industry. The National Association of Professional Organizers reports that organizing consultants and products — think The Container Store — has grown into a $1 billion industry.
All the acquiring and storing has its limits and it must go away. And when you don’t know what to do with all your stuff — or you die and your decedents have to contend with it — someone calls 1-800-JUNK or one of its competitors and pays them to haul it away, most of it to a landfill that you and I pay for through our growing tax bills.
In other words, we spend money on spending, then we spend money to warehouse and organize the stuff we spend on. Then we pay to discard it. Then we pay to maintain the landfills where it sits for ever and ever.
But the expense of shopping doesn’t stop there! You pay in time and mental health, too.
A few years ago market research firm OnePoll surveyed 2,000 women and found that each year chicks spend more than 100 hours on 30 trips to shop for clothes, 15 shoe-shopping excursions taking 40 hours, and a full 50 hours per year window shopping. Sure, we all need to do some shopping. That is life. But this is not shopping-because-you-need-stuff-to-live. This is shopping for sport. After all, that same survey found that these same women spend 95 hours and 84 trips shopping for food — which one could argue is a daily need actually requiring frequent shopping. Yet this task occupies half the time of shoe, clothes and window shopping.
And then there is the time required to maintain all that stuff. That big house doesn’t clean itself, after all. Either you must work more hours at a paid job to pay someone else to clean it, or take your own time to clean it. All those 30 outfits must be laundered and ironed. All of this time shopping and maintaining stuff cuts into time you could be spending on other stuff — building your career so you could make more money, or on hobbies, exercise, sleep or time with your family. It’s no secret that obese and exhausted America should be spending more time on healthier habits, and Pew tells us that 46 percent of dads believe they spend too little time with their children, and 23 percent of moms feel the same way.
But that stuff in and of itself makes our lives directly worse. A National Association of Professional Organizers survey found that 54 percent of Americans are overwhelmed by their clutter and 78 percent find it too complicated to deal with. The UCLA study found that managing the volume of their possessions is so severe that it elevates stress hormone levels for many mothers.
So what is the answer?
Get real with your feelings. What keeps you up at night? Money worries? Guilt for not spending time with loved ones? How can you switch time and money spent to align with your goals and priorities?
Switch your focus from saving money on individual items and buying quality items that will last a long time and give you pleasure. Instead of buying 19 cheap tops at H&M and Target, invest in three beautiful blouses that give you a thrill when you wear them and will last for several years.
Ban the notion of “retail therapy.”
Put that shopping spree into the context of your entire life. Next time you go shopping, ask yourself how it really makes you feel. Now think of your closet, drawers and attic. Are they full? How does that make you feel? What about your bank account? Does the balance evoke comfort or anxiety?Source: www.forbes.com/sites/emmajohnson/2015/01/15/the-real-cost...

Getting braces, whether as a child, teen, or adult, requires strict and diligent adherence to good oral health. While you might feel like you’re spending tons of time at the orthodontist, that time in the chair doesn’t allow for slacking at home with forgone brushing or flossing. Since plaque and other bacteria can easily become trapped inside and around the brackets and wires of braces, tooth decay can easily occur and go undetected.
In addition to maintaining a good tooth cleaning routine, it’s also important to eat foods that will benefit your teeth and not set you back in your treatment, whether it be as a result of broken wires or cavities. We have comprised a list of foods that are good to eat with braces as well as those that should be avoided! Take a look.
The good
If you’re looking for something quick to eat, it’s important to choose items that are soft in texture for the sake of your braces. This is especially important after you get your braces tightened and your teeth are sore.
Experiencing pain isn’t a free-for-all to eat carb-dense food just because it is soft, however. Remember that carbs turn into sugar that spur bad bacteria growth on your teeth! Instead, turn to calcium-rich foods such as milk, yogurt and cheese.
Since braces are attached to the enamel on your teeth, it’s important you keep your teeth strong so the braces can do their job. Increasing your calcium intake will help boost your enamel, too. It is also important to remember to eat protein-dense meals. These meals will keep you full longer and help keep you from snacking later. While dentists typically recommend nuts as a good source of protein, and a natural exfoliator for your teeth, we would suggest staying away from hard nuts (such as almonds) since they could harm or break your braces. Instead, incorporate soft meats such as chicken, turkey and fish into your diet.
Finally, fruits and vegetables are always a good option! Try streaming vegetables on days where your teeth are especially sore. Soft fruits such as kiwi, peaches and tangerines are easy to eat and provide a high nutritional benefit.
And here’s the best trick…no one expects you to avoid dessert during the course of your treatment! Treating yourself to soft-serve or other ice creams (without add-ins like bubble gum) are a good way to relieve pain after orthodontist appointments and stick to the “soft foods” rule.
The bad
Any food that is tough or chewy should be minimized or eliminated during your treatment. This includes foods like pizza crust, or raw vegetables like carrots or celery. While raw vegetables are normally recommended by dentists for the natural cleaning effect on the teeth, with braces, they are too hard and could break wires or brackets.
Tough meats such as beef jerky or undercooked meat that makes it difficult to consume can also be problematic for those with braces. Just like with crunchy foods, these meats could do measurable damage in your mouth.
Finally, avoid chewing on non-food items (including ice!) for the duration of your treatment. This could include pens, pencils or nails. Many times, we unconsciously gnaw on our pen out of stress or boredom, however this could adversely impact your braces and set you back on your treatment.
The ugly
Hard candies are bad for your teeth whether you have braces or not. While we would advocate for everyone to ditch these tooth-destroyers, those with braces need eliminate them most of all. The sugar in these candies can get lodged behind brackets, out of reach of any toothbrush, and lead to tooth decay. In addition, you may be tempted to bite down on the candy and cause serious destruction to your braces.
Sticky foods are just as bad as hard candy. Taffies and caramel can get stuck in the wires and be nearly impossible to remove.
Getting braces is a great catalyst to help you clean up your diet as well as your oral hygiene. Eating foods that promote strong teeth, healthy enamel, and reduce bad bacteria will ensure you have a bright, straight smile when you get your braces off.

Rishi Kapoor clarifies that no biopic on Raj Kapoor can be made till his mother Krishna Raj Kapoor is alive
Biopics are in vogue in Bollywood. Several such films like M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Mary Kom etc have worked big time on Bollywood. On the other hand, Raj Kapoor has been a prolific filmmaker and actor. His impact on Bollywood has been tremendous. As a result, it’s not a surprise that rumours of a biopic on The Showman have been doing the rounds. There are reports that grandson Ranbir Kapoor will play Raj Kapoor.
Raj Kapoor’s son, actor Rishi Kapoor however has denied that any biopic is being made. He revealed that since 15 years, discussions have been going on regarding Raj Kapoor biopic. Bobby Bedi, who produced films like Saathiya and Mangal Pandey – The Rising, offered to make the film. But the entire Kapoor family objected to it.
Rishi Kapoor said that he understands that the story of Raj Kapoor makes for a great film. Also, there’s a lot of curiosity surrounding him. But he made it clear that he and his family members won’t allow anyone to make a biopic till his mother Krishna Raj Kapoor is alive. Moreover, Rishi Kapoor said that he is also apprehensive that it might lead to controversies. He admitted that Raj Kapoor had relationships. It’s something that’s a fact. But showing these things in his biopic can hurt the concerned people’s emotions.
Rishi Kapoor was then reminded of an interesting anecdote. He said that late actor-politician Sunil Dutt was also against the idea of Raj Kapoor, who was a close associate of Sunil’s wife Nargis. Rishi Kapoor’s system Ritu Nanda had asked Sunil Dutt once whether he would permit anyone to make Raj Kapoor’s biopic. His reply simply was, ‘Let sleeping dogs lie’. Rishi Kapoor, at the same time, also said that if they do plan the biopic, he and Kapoors would like to present Raj Kapoor the way he really was.
Other biopics have also got shelved because of similar reasons. At one point, Ranbir Kapoor was to work in a film on Kishore Kumar which was to be directed by Anurag Basu. But it became difficult to get a nod from those associated with Kishore Kumar. Hence, the plan was dropped. Ranbir however got a chance to do a biopic finally – he’ll be seen as Sanjay Dutt in the Rajkumar Hirani-directed film that releases next year.

The low temperatures and cold winds of winter can make your water pipes susceptible to freezing, especially ones located in unheated or exterior areas of your home. And if a frozen pipes bursts, it can cause flooding and serious damage.
The best way to deal with frozen pipes is to prevent them in the first place. A thin flow of water from a faucet during the worst of the cold spell can help prevent plumbing or water service lines from freezing. If you are away from home for several days, turn the water off or leave the thermostat set at or above 55 degrees to ensure your home stays warm.
If the unthinkable does happen, you’ll have to act fast to minimize the damage and costs.
How to Identify a Frozen Pipe
If you turn on the faucet and no water or only a slight trickle comes out, there may be a blockage of ice somewhere in your plumbing. If the pipes are exposed, such as pipes under sinks or in a basement, you may be able to see the frozen portion of the pipe. Frozen pipes often have frost on them or may have a slight bulge. If you are unable to locate the frozen pipe or it is not accessible, you should call a licensed plumber.
How to Thaw a Frozen Pipe
If you have a frozen pipe that hasn’t burst, you need to thaw the pipe as soon as possible. You can contact a certified plumber or try to thaw it yourself. Here are some tips to help:
Turn on the faucet serviced by the frozen line. This will relieve some pressure and as the ice starts to melt and water begins to flow again it will help melt the ice in the pipe.
If you start to notice water leaking from the pipe as it thaws, then turn off the water supply to that section of plumbing or the entire house.
Apply heat in the general area by increasing the room temperature where the pipes are exposed or placing a portable heater or heat lamp in the room. Apply direct heat by wrapping an electric blanket or heating pad around the frozen pipe or using a hair dryer on the frozen pipe section.
Always follow safety guidelines when using electric appliances. Never stand in water while using an electric appliance and never leave them unattended while in use.
Never use a blow torch or open flame to thaw pipes. It creates a serious fire hazard and can cause more damage to the pipe.
What to Do If a Frozen Pipe Bursts
Pipes burst when frozen because water expands when it freezes, adding considerable pressure inside the frozen pipe. That pressure can cause a pipe to crack and burst. If a frozen pipes bursts, shut your water off at the master shut-off valve immediately to minimize flooding. A 1/8-inch crack in a pipe can spew up to 250 gallons of water a day! A shut-off valve is usually located near your meter where the water line comes into a basement or crawl space from the street. Unfortunately, you’ll have to call a plumber to repair the damaged pipe. Contact one as soon as possible and dry up any water. You may also want to contact your insurance agent, depending on the extent of the damage.
Frozen Meters
While your AMR transmitter cannot freeze, the meter itself can. If your meter freezes, you will need to contact us for a replacement before you will have water again. If you have an upgraded AMR meter, there is a charge associated with having to replace it.
If you have any questions about frozen meters or water lines, please contact Cleveland Water at (216) 664-3060.

There’s dentistry and then there’s “endodontic treatment.” So, what’s the difference? Is one a smaller part of the other?
The word “endodontic” stems from the Greek words for “inside” (endo) and “tooth” (odont). Together, the meaning of a root canal treatment is brought to a term. Endodonic therapy is actually a tooth-saving branch of the dental industry.
In order to better understand what a root canal is and how “endodontic therapy” can help save a tooth, it is essential to understand the anatomy of a tooth.
A tooth’s anatomy
Starting from the outside-in, let’s first talk about what you see when someone smiles: the enamel of the tooth—you know, that (preferably) white, shiny stuff.
Below the enamel is a layer called dentin. Dentin is softer than enamel, but is the second hardest tissue in the body—akin to bone—with a yellowish tint (hence when your dentin is exposed or enamel wears, your teeth look more yellow).
Below the layer of dentin you have the “pulp” of the tooth. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue that create surrounding hard tissues of the tooth during its initial development. Reaching from the top of the tooth to the bottom of the roots, the pulp connects everything to the tissues of the jaw. Once the tooth is fully mature, however, it can survive without the pulp…hence why a root canal works!
So, what exactly happens during a root canal? First, let’s dive into why a root canal is usually needed.
The cause for a root canal
If the pulp layer of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed (due to enamel erosion, cavities, decay, impact, repeated dental procedures, a chip or a crack, or something else), you will experience sure signs like pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness to touch and chewing, discoloration and swelling in that area. These symptoms signify infection or inflammation that can cause more pain over time and eventually lead to an abscess. Read: go to your dentist immediately to sort out the cause and get appropriate treatment.
If the needed treatment is a root canal, what happens during the procedure by the endodontist? Allow us to paint that picture.
How root canals work
An exam and x-ray is done to identify the infected area. After taking a look, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area, and then isolate the tooth by placing a “dental dam” (a small protective sheet) over the area to keep it sanitary and dry throughout the procedure.
Once isolated, the procedure begins. First, the endodontist will drill an opening into the crown (or top) of the tooth. Once an opening is created the endodontist can clean out the infected pulp from the entire pulp chamber and the roots below to prepare the space for the filling.
After the canals of the tooth have been shaped, a biocompatible material called “gutta-percha” (a rubber compound) is used to fill the canals where the existing pulp and roots were. This is done with a cement adhesive that ensures total sealant of the canals. On top of the gutta-percha will be a layer of composite filling. For some patients, this is all that a root canal will entail.
Depending on the strength of your tooth and if it is possible for it to hold the restoration in place, your endodontist may opt to use a post inside of the tooth, add a crown—or even a crown and post to prevent the tooth from breaking.
If a crown is the avenue you have to take, then a temporary crown will be placed on top of the filling at this time. You’ll have a second appointment when the permanent crown is ready to be placed.
Where is a root canal on the pain Richter?
Many people report that a root canal procedure itself is equivalent to having a filling done. If the anesthetic is done correctly you should only feel the vibrations from the tools.
Starting a few hours after the procedure is when you might feel sensitivity due to the area being inflamed from impact. Usually over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen, or naproxen can subdue the pain, and in a few days you should return to normal.
For a period of time, there may be a noticeable difference in your bite or how your tooth feels to your tongue. In time, this will change, and you’ll become used to the new shape or feel.
Caring for your tooth and/or crown after the procedure
Until the root canal procedure is officially complete, and the permanent filling or crown is in place, it’s best to chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
We’re happy to report that no extra care is needed for this update to your teeth! Continue upping your game with good oral care (i.e., brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, using mouthwash, eating a healthy diet and seeing your dentist regularly), and you can put this quick procedure fast behind you!

How We Live, Bochum, March 2016
What is the visual fabric of memory? Its dominant feature is a lack of precision. It consists mainly of holes with a pull that wants them to be leaving holes to be filled in: What is not a hole is just something that points to something we cannot see: An ongoing fight against the indexicality of the image. It does not show something; it only reminds me of something the picture does not show.
In this, it turns into a constant slipping: We remember, we forgot, we stumble, we catch ourselves, and this catching-ourselves becomes the actual stumble…

Estrogen creams are for peri or post-menopausal women experiencing symptoms of vaginal atrophy. It occurs because of the lower estrogen levels in the blood after menopause. The skin becomes drier and less elastic, causing such symptoms as burning, pain with intercourse, and even urinary incontinence. Estrogen creams work locally, as opposed to hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which works systemically. This means that the cream is applied to the skin, works directly where it is applied, and shouldn’t increase your blood estrogen levels.
HRT affects the entire body and is the most effective treatment for hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, low sex drive, vaginal dryness, etc. So, if you are experiencing any of those symptoms, then yes, you may find an estrogen cream to be very helpful. Women who have had breast or uterine cancers however, should discuss their specific case with their oncologists first.
Menopause can be a time of significant changes, physical as well as emotional. Contact us for a free phone consultation and see how our certified Menopause Practitioners can help.

A 2004 Jeep Liberty gas tank fire lawsuit alleges the location of the fuel tank caused the death of a 58-year-old woman in Ohio.
On October 20, 2017, Mrs. Deanna Gilreath of Hamilton, Ohio, burned to death in her 2004 Jeep Liberty after it was rear-ended by a concrete truck. The crash caused the rear-mounted fuel tank to leak gas and explode into flames.
According to the Fiat Chrysler (FCA US) lawsuit, the seatback of the driver seat collapsed backward, putting the woman's head closer to the burning rear of the SUV.
Witnesses to the crash describe a scene of pure horror as the Jeep burst into flames upon impact. One man told local media he saw the crash and the immediate resulting fire while running to the Jeep to join another man already trying to unlock the door. The men said the intense heat prevented any rescue and they had no choice but to turn away.
According to the lawsuit, if the gas tank would have been located toward the middle of the Jeep, the outcome would have been much different because that area wasn't significantly damaged.
Instead, with the gas tank located behind the rear axle, a trailer hitch allegedly used to protect occupants in a crash did just the opposite. In this case, the trailer hitch pierced the gas tank and allowed fuel to leak.
The wrongful death lawsuit accuses Chrysler of three failures: Placing the Jeep Liberty gas tank in the crush zone behind the rear axle; using a trailer hitch to allegedly protect the gas tank in a rear-end crash; and manufacturing a defective seatback that didn't hold up in a crash.
The lawsuit alleges FCA has known for decades that the placement of the gas tanks behind the rear axles increases the risk of fires and deaths in rear-impact crashes.
Plaintiff Daniel Gilreath, the husband of Deanna Gilreath, says FCA certainly knew in 1978 about placing gas tanks too far toward the rear after watching what was happening with Ford Pintos blowing up into flames.
Chrysler was also advertising Dodge vehicles in 1985 as safe vehicles because the gas tanks were located in front of the rear axles, the exact opposite of the 2004 Jeep Liberty.
In addition, advertisements for 1996 Dodge Caravans promoted their safety by saying, "Fuel tank is mounted for impact protection ahead of the rear suspension and between the bodyside rails." The automaker made similar safety claims for Ram vans in 1999 by advertising the safety choice to put the gas tanks ahead of the rear axles to protect the tanks.
The lawsuit also references a letter sent to FCA in February 1998 from the mother of a woman who was in a Jeep with a rear-mounted gas tank. The writer said her daughter's Jeep was hit from the rear and "[w]ithin moments, the Jeep was on fire because the gas tank had been hit."
Her daughter did escape the SUV and flames, but the woman told Chrysler a person would be in serious danger if they "could not get out of the car within moments."
According to the Jeep Liberty lawsuit, more evidence showing Chrysler knew about the dangers of the gas tanks comes from 1998 when the automaker performed a computerized crash test on a Jeep with a gas tank behind the axle.
FCA allegedly determined the final 25 inches of the rear-end of the Jeep were being crushed, a serious problem considering the gas tank was located only 11 inches from the rear.
The plaintiff says engineers noted "[t]he crush in the structure in the vicinity of the fuel tank is undesirable and therefore needs to be minimized." However, the automaker allegedly took no action and didn't let customers know about the test results.
According to the plaintiff, more evidence can allegedly be seen from 2000 when an internal organization stopped placing test instruments in the rear-ends of Jeeps undergoing rear crash tests.
The organization, FCA's "Rear Impact Tech Club," allegedly said test instruments in the final 24 inches of the rear-ends of the Jeeps were being destroyed in rear crashes. However, the gas tanks were still left in the same area.
And as more alleged proof the automaker knew about the dangers of the gas tank locations, by model year 2008 the automaker had moved the gas tanks to the front of the rear axles on all of its Jeeps.
In June 2013, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked Chrysler to recall 2.7 million SUVs, including the 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty, because of the risk of gas tank fires in rear impacts.
Chrysler said the "analysis of the data confirms that these vehicles are not defective and are among the safest in the peer group." Further, the automaker said at the time of manufacturing, every Jeep met all federal safety standards.
Although Chrysler claimed the SUVs were safe and refused to issue a recall, the automaker finally relented and recalled about 1.5 million vehicles to install trailer hitches. However, the automaker says the trailer hitch provides only “incremental improvement in the crash energy management in low- to moderate-speed rear collisions.”
François Castaing, Chrysler's former vice president for engineering, admitted in 2011 the trailer hitches will not protect the gas tanks. And according to the Jeep Liberty lawsuit, the trailer hitch makes things even worse by turning into a spear that pierces the gas tank in a crash.
Mr. Gilreath says his 2004 Liberty was taken to a Jeep dealer based on the recall, but he was told nothing needed to be done to the SUV because it already had a Chrysler tow package/trailer hitch installed.
FCA has been sued before because of Jeep gas tank fires, including in the case of four-year-old Remington Walden who burned to death following a rear-end collision. The jury ruled Chrysler "acted with a reckless or wanton disregard for human life" and awarded Remington's family $150 million.
Although the award was eventually dropped to $40 million, the jury verdict was upheld on appeal, with one judge ruling "[t]he evidence against FCA was overwhelming."
In addition to the claims about the trailer hitches and gas tanks, the lawsuit alleges the seatbacks are defective and dangerous because they collapse easily in a rear-end crash.
In a fire a collapsed seat can mean the difference between life and death. The occupant falls backward with the seatback which leaves the person disoriented, making escape less likely and making it harder to reach the person for rescue.
According to court documents, the federal rule that set a minimum standard for seatback strength was based on a test dated from the 1970s that was so easy to pass that certain lawn chairs passed the test.
In addition to FCA, the lawsuit also names the trucking company, Tri State Concrete Construction, Inc. and the truck driver who hit the Jeep Liberty, Tracy Wayne Moore.
The Jeep Liberty gas tank fire lawsuit was filed in the Court of Common Pleas of Butler County, Ohio – Daniel B. Gilreath, v. FCA LLC, et al.
The plaintiff is represented by Butler Wooten & Peak LLP, Butler Tobin LLC, and Holcomb & Hyde, LLC.
