Although not his first year of racing, we’d say if there was a break out year for Wayland Campbell, this was it. Son of rock racing legend Shannon Campbell, Wayland has gotten faster and faster with each and every race. There aren’t many drivers that, when you’re on course shooting photos, make you step back a few feet as they fly by. Shannon is one of those drivers, Wayland is now the other. As the season came to a close last Saturday, Wayland grabbed 3rd for the weekend’s National Championship and earned himself a 2nd place finish for the 2013 Ultra4 National Series, which by any standard is nothing short of amazing. Congrats again to Wayland, and the entire Campbell Racing team.

Above the Clouds — 2014 Glen Helen Grand Prix
There’s nothing like a good old IFS vs Solid Axle debate. There are advantages to both, and each shines in its own environment. It just so happens the short course style racing of the west coast Ultra4 series favors IFS. Since 2011, all 4 of the Glen Helen races were won with IFS… the 2 Nor Cal Stampede races were also won with IFS…. BUT that doesn’t mean solid axle machines aren’t close behind.
Three solid axle drivers come immediately to mind when I enter any Ultra4 short course style field, Alex Hardaway, Jason Blanton, and Jake Hallenbeck. Jason earned his Ultra4 National Title last year as the fastest solid axle racer of the season, and Alex and Jake have more seat time on the Nor Cal short course field than virtually any other driver. While everyone aims for 1st, taking a podium finish is nothing short of an amazing achievement in today’s high turnout competition, and you can count on one of these solid axle machines making their way to the top. As it happens it’s Jake’s year to shine. Having just grabbed 3rd in the MetalCloak Nor Cal Stampede, he returned last weekend with a 3rd place finish at the 4 Wheel Parts Glen Helen Grand Prix.
And the IFS vs Solid Axle debate continues.
P.S. We manufacture Spider 9 axles for both, so it’s all good.

Tom Wayes gets it done in the Ultra4 vs Rock Bouncer Shootout!
Ultra4s at Superlift in Hot Springs, AR is really two competitions wrapped in one. Between 9am and 2pm, Ultra4s battled it out for 5 laps of racing insanity. This would be the main Ultra4 race, the one that counts toward the series points. It was Chicky Barton who took top honors here, but the day was just getting going.
From 6pm to 9ish, the RCV ULTRA4s vs. SRRS Rock Bouncer Shootout was underway. No doubt this fun, but highly competitive shootout, is here to stay for future Ultra4s at Superlift races. Simply put, Ultra4s and Rock Bouncers battle it out in a timed start to finish race up an obstacle chosen just prior to race day. No practice is allowed, however you can walk the course to plan your attack. It's a fast run, roughly 20 seconds for the fastest of the fast, and your total score is the combination of the two runs you are allowed to do.
This year's challenge was carefully selected to balance both capabilities of Ultra4 and Rock Bouncer vehicles, in an effort to make it as competitive and fair as possible. While all drives made an insane mountainside climb look easy, it was west coast driver Tom Wayes with his Spider 9 powered IFS racer who simply got it done. Both of his runs were among the fastest, of course, but it was the consistency of both together that sealed his victory. Congrats Tom!

there are more than appear in this set.
2nd place in his buggy first time out about 50 mins behind Italians but over 1hour ahead of 3rd not bad for a man on his own.
JLR 52 weeks 2 to go
Choose this one because it was the coolest motor of all those over the weekend, I nearly didn't make 41 as the driver was heading towards me a little lost, The only competitor of the King Of The Valley 2012 to run without a winchman/Co-Driver.
Image updated 27/08/2012 due to Canon Software improvement allow clean Raw image.

Fast & Steady -- 2014 Badlands UMC
A rare view from the Wall of 2nd place finisher Mike Colville. After racers make it to the top, they still have to get back down… this consists of a near vertical decent to the right of the initial climb. It’s a spot virtually hidden from the spectators, and it’s impressive to watch these machines tackle the decent like it was no obstacle at all. Mike finished with 9 total laps, looked absolutely unstoppable the entire time, and took the time penalty bypass only 2 times. He secured his 2nd place spot by a large margin, and finished the race having completed the Wall more times than any single racer on the field. Only the 2nd Ultra4 competition for Mike’s brand new Spider 9 powered IFS racer, it was exciting for all of us to see both driver and machine right at home in the Badlands terrain.

Congress is in session; the National's are back on.
Yeah, remember that post a few days ago, where we said the National’s were cancelled? Well, they were, keyword here is were. They're back on, same time but different venue. Ultra4 drivers from around the country were having none of that no National’s discussion, and spoke up load and clear. “The National’s need to happen this year”, they rejoiced, “regardless of location”. So, here we are, getting ready to head to Congress, AZ next weekend (September 28th) for the Ultra4 Nationals.
This updated spot is a bit familiar to us. We've hit a few W.E.Rock rock crawls in Congress, as evidence from the photo we shot here of rock master Jason Feuilly, and can say, as far as the rocks go, it's the real deal. After speaking briefly with Dave Cole, Ultra4 owner and grand master, sounds like we'll have somewhere around 20 miles of rock racing terrain to work with (unconfirmed, don't quote us on this one). Couple this with over 40 already confirmed top Ultra4 drivers, and we're going to have ourselves a Nationals.
We'll, we have some planning to do ourselves, but rest assured we'll be (back) in Congress for this years Ultra4 National’s. Event details can be found on Ultra4Racing.com @ ultra4racing.com/the-inside-line/2013-nitto-tire-national... . Looking forward to seeing everyone out there!
Update from the floor for March 7, 2014.
If you're an Ultra4 racer, you already know we have been making IFS parts for some time now. But... why isn't this product line shown in all of its glory on our online store ( www.spidertrax.com )? That sir (or madam) is a good question. Demand seems to be outpacing production, such that there's really no sense of "officially" releasing a product without the product physically on hand to sell. We've been ramping up production, and making process improvements along the way, but we're still been selling faster than stocking. Both a good and a bad problem, but we'll get these stocked and in the store soon enough.
Pictured here is the 941 version of our IFS housing stub shafts, in production. Most racers are running the larger 30 series joints, which of course we also make, but we're starting to see a little more 941 demand these days, a choice likely influenced heavily on price.
Price... but what prices are we talking about since those parts ARE NOT on the online store? We know, bummed too, but don't hesitate to give us a call for a complete quote on all parts needed for your Ultra4 IFS project. It's a free call, (800) 286-0898, so reach out and let us know what you're planning on building. We like to keep our production schedule running like our well oiled machines, so you will get a solid date on when your order will be machined and ready for ship.

The team that created the F-150 Raptor is unveiling a desert-dune conquering, boulder-crawling, street legal SUV it calls the ultimate vehicle for hardcore off-road enthusiasts who want next-level capability. The all-new 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor – designed and engineered by Ford Performance - is inspired by Ultra 4 Racing. It comes with standard 37” all-terrain tires, an exclusive twin-turbo 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine targeted to deliver more than 400 horsepower, and a Raptor HOSS 4.0 race-ready suspension system, with a fully boxed, high-strength steel frame.
Built for highway-speed desert racing and Baja rock crawling, the Bronco Raptor is 9.8”wider than a base Bronco four-door for more confident high-speed cornering. The styling is also extreme with Raptor styling cues like model-specific LED headlights to provide a mincing look and the Ford block lettering at the front stretches across the signature two-piece rectangular grille.

Rock Bouncers vs. ULTRA4 Shootout is on!
Ultra4Racing.com just posted the Schedule of Events for Hot Springs, AR ( bit.ly/1dPTArv ) and yes, the Rock Bouncers vs. ULTRA4 Shootout is on! Ultra4s at Superlift mark's the second race of the 2014 season, and mark's the second time that Ultra4s are taking on the mixed forest and rock hills of Hot Springs, AR. It's one of our favorite venues, with it's challenging trails, enthusiastic crowd, and added Rock Bouncer flavor, it seems to have just the right amount of everything to make for an amazing event. Man on a Mission -- 2014 King of the Mountains
Meet Roberto Ciani of Ciani Offroad, otherwise known as the man on a mission. I first met up with Roberto and his team during tech inspection, and the clean lines of his Spider 9 powered Ultra4 racer certainly caught my attention. A reminder, and reassurance, that we’ll be seeing new freshly minted rigs here and there, making the competition more fierce each and every race. That, plus Roberto knows how to drive, and man did he drive.
He was one of the fastest on the course, and it was only small, but painful, setbacks that held him back (flat tire & rear sway bar bracket) . Never giving up, Roberto stayed on Levi’s tail the entire time, and gave everyone else that push to drive harder. It was a pleasure meeting the Ciani Offroad team, we do hope to see Roberto back out on the race course soon.

Big Meats -- 2014 King of the Mountains
Jaap Betsema made the trip down from the Netherlands to give his massive tire outfitted Ultra4, nicknamed the Fire Ant, a go at the freshly minted Italian terrain. The Fire Ant can move at speed, but it's true advantage is in the rocks. As such, the course of King of the Mountains was an overall good fit for the Fire Ant, unfortunately a lost master cylinder by the end of the 2nd run caused their racing efforts to take a back seat. With no spare on hand, they were simply out of options. Playing for points, Jaap did start the 3rd and 4th runs, immediately parking the rig after taking off from the line. In the end, his team finished 14th out of the field of 23 racers, not the placing he was hoping for but still far from out on series points.
