Bronco Raptor, the newest member of the Bronco outdoor brand of Built Wild™ SUVs, debuts today as the most powerful street-legal Bronco ever, and the world’s first Ultra4 Racing-inspired SUV. Ford Performance, the same team that produces the F-150 Raptor, designed and engineered Bronco Raptor as a calling to hardcore off-road enthusiasts.

Bronco Raptor is equipped with elite off-road technology and hardware. Ultra4 Racing is the epitome of grueling off-road competition, featuring demanding races such as the famed King of the Hammers in the Johnson Valley in California, where Bronco Raptor will be on display on Feb. 3. Ford and Bronco will continue as the official truck and SUV of the Ultra4 series.

With the addition of Bronco Raptor, Ford once again expands its Raptor high-performance off-road vehicle franchise, which also includes F-150 Raptor for North America and Ranger Raptor for global markets.

“Raptor is the apex of our off-road lineup and is now a full lineup with race proven content and design that you can’t get from anyone else,” said Jim Farley, chief executive officer, Ford Motor Company. “Only Ford could create a Bronco Raptor.”

The team that created the F-150 Raptor is unveiling a desert-dune conquering, boulder-crawling, street legal SUV it calls the ultimate vehicle for hardcore off-road enthusiasts who want next-level capability. The all-new 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor – designed and engineered by Ford Performance - is inspired by Ultra 4 Racing. It comes with standard 37” all-terrain tires, an exclusive twin-turbo 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine targeted to deliver more than 400 horsepower, and a Raptor HOSS 4.0 race-ready suspension system, with a fully boxed, high-strength steel frame.

Built for highway-speed desert racing and Baja rock crawling, the Bronco Raptor is 9.8”wider than a base Bronco four-door for more confident high-speed cornering. The styling is also extreme with Raptor styling cues like model-specific LED headlights to provide a mincing look and the Ford block lettering at the front stretches across the signature two-piece rectangular grille.

Time for a change in scenery.

The weekend is before us, and that means only one thing. It's time for another Ultra4 racing installment, this one in the land of sheep & windmills (and ale) a plenty. The 2014 King of the Valleys will kick-off this Friday, taking place in the history rich lands of Walters Arena in South Wales. Packed with 3 days of racing goodness, The Ultra4 European Circuit has its roots with this venue, which kicked off Europe's Ultra4 racing in 2012. Fast forward to today, and we have a field of racers that are lightyears ahead of the competition just a few years back, which makes one thing certain. This weekend is going to be one seriously competitive race.

US's own Levi Shirely will be taking the field after having just grabbing 1st at the last European race, King of the Mountains AND 2nd at the last US race, the Glen Helen Grand Prix. He will be racing alongside many other top Ultra4 European competitors we've come to know, including Nicolas Montador (current series leader), Walter Philippo, Jaap Betsema, Axel Burmann, Jim Marsden, and many more. We're excited for this 3rd Ultra4 European race of the 2014 season, and excited to see the sport growing so well across the ocean. We'll be there once again, capturing a few photos and stories along the way. Stay tuned for more details as the weekend of racing unfolds.

Full Throttle — 2014 Badlands UMC

Derek West, pictured here, was the first one thru The Wall. I was pumped to see him just fly by, absolutely in his element and never letting up on the throttle. The Wall took many out, I witnessed three rear axle shaft failures, from the best of the best, just from my own vantage point. Unfortunately, one of those three was ours. Unfortunately again, that one happened to be Derek.

You can make parts that exceed the specs of aerospace, but come to an Ultra4 race and you will accept that the unbreakable is in fact breakable. Derek was running the best of the best 35 spline axle shaft on the planet, in service since before the 2013 King of the Hammers. While fatigue will certainly play a part in any failure of this kind, the sheer amount of abuse Badlands dishes out, coupled with a few extra hundred pounds of mud strapped to your car, and the unfortunate can, in fact, happen. Derek was among the top, pulled in a solid 5 laps, but the time taken to replace a shaft didn’t add up. This assumed, of course, it was a shaft that failed. Taking things apart in the pits sometimes unravel even greater issues, best left for the shop.

Failures happen, and it’s why we attend each and every Ultra4 race. Race photography, team & product support before, during, and after every race, publishing stories after it all unfolds… these are all great things that move our sport, and Spidertrax, forward. However, what really drives us… what really moves us… is product design. What better way to engineer a part, manufacture a part, than to be right in the heart of the action… witnessing first hand what these machines are really capable of. Once Derek’s axle lands on our desk, we will workup a full in-depth analysis that not only includes elements of a chemical composition, a hardness traverse, and a tensile test… but all of this will be coupled with our first hand knowledge of physically being on site when it happened. The secrets out, I guess, but that’s how we build the best parts.

Getting Derek fixed up will be easy, no doubt, the bigger question is what’s on Derek’s mind for his new upcoming Ultra4 build. Rumor has it he’s eyeing a new machine for 2015, has the IFS bug finally bit him? Even we don’t have that answer, but time will tell.

Getting Ready to Launch -- 2014 Ultra4s at Superlift

This shot was taken during the now quite famous Ultra4 vs Rock Bouncer shootout, which followed the main Ultra4 race on April 5th, 2014. Pictured here is Mr. Tom Wayes, caught right as he was turning into the monster climb that would separate the properly shock tuned from, well, the ones that were not properly shock tuned. Tom ended up winning the shootout, with the fastest combination of the two attempts allowed.

"In the continuing effort to foster growth in the development of grass roots short course off road racing, Lucas Oil and Miller Motorsports Park have expanded their regional off road racing series partnership. "We have developed a wonderful relationship with Miller Motorsports Park at all levels of Lucas Oil Off Road Racing. Now we are thrilled to be working with them to develop a strong working model for short course off road racing at a regional level in Utah and the surrounding areas." "

Jake Hallenbeck is no stranger to rock sports, but 2013 marked his first year with Ultra4. It didn't take him very long to get comfortable with the mixed style of rock crawling and rock racing Ultra4 brings; when the dust settled at last weekend's Nitto National Championship, Jake earned himself the Dynomax Rookie of the Year award, finishing 6th in series points. Congrats to Jake and his Marked Motorsports crew!

Return of the King -- 2014 King of the Hammers

We're a few days late to the KOH recap party, thanks in large part to both a hard drive and CF card failure. Apparently our computers don't like the desert as much as Spider 9 axles do (shameless plug). So first things first, a HUGE CONGRATS to Loren Healy, for taking top honors in this year's 2014 King of the Hammers. For 178 miles, Loren raced his Spider 9 powered solid axle Ultra4 through easily the toughest terrain these United States has to offer. Never giving up, which always seems to be the recipe for success out in Johnson Valley, Loren crossed the finish line in just over 8 hours, roughly 15 minutes ahead of the 2nd place finisher.

Easily the toughest KOH yet, a huge honor to Loren for winning and for everyone else who managed to cross the finish line, which was 32 in total. That's 32 finishers in a race made up of roughly 156 Ultra4s, or just under 21%. Yes, it was that hard. Finishing or not, we are still very blown away by the continued support we receive from all drivers and teams. No doubt Spider 9 axles have found their place in Ultra4, we are both grateful and honored just to be part of the action. It's going to be an amazing year, and with 7 more US races and 4 European races still on the books, we're just getting started.

Oh, and remember that hard drive and CF card failure? Yeah, those had all of our photos on it from KOH. Luckily, by a little technical magic, we managed to recover both failures and we'll be back in full swing with photos to share. So, stay tuned this week (and likely a little of next week at this point) for some of our favorite shots from KOH.

History was made, yet again, in the world of Ultra4 racing. Last weekend marked the 7th installment for the 2014 Ultra4 season, the 4 Wheel Parts Glen Helen Grand Prix, a venue that started in 2011 and was marked, even then, as the next big thing. It was such a massive deal at the time I saved the original drivers list ( bit.ly/2011gpx ), confident that what had just gone down was a mark in Ultra4 history. We had, get this, 38 racers scheduled to take the field in 2011. The sheer idea of having 38 racers make their way to a debut race was an insane number… at the time anyway. Last weekend, we had 120 drivers qualifying for the top spots of Glen Helen. It was less than a month ago when we marked the MetalCloak Stampede as the largest Ultra4 race outside of King of the Hammers, best to update your notebooks on that one. Glen Helen now has that top honor.

Yes, its pretty amazing, but for me personally this wasn’t the big story. For those following our posts, you should have caught our tease before July 4th weekend, hinting about Loren Healy’s soon to be released IFS Ultra4 racer. I’d venture to say Loren’s mission to build the next best IFS machine was the quietest, most secretive, build we’ve seen in some time. It was a project that we were part of well before this years King of the Hammers, and one that wasn’t debuted until the King was absolutely ready. Although Loren had virtually zero seat time prior to Glen Helen, the little bit of time he did have during that July 4th weekend made one thing very clear. This was the going to be a big deal.

Loren Healy took everything he learned from his first IFS racer… and started from scratch. This unique forward engine IFS Ultra4, built in a style similar to a Pro 4, took every aspect of Loren’s previous IFS machine and made it many times better. Equipped with a high strength & lightweight Spidertrax Spider 9 IFS & solid rear axle, the beautifully crafted front & rear suspension of Armada Engineering, and clean chassis work we’ve come to expect from Jimmy’s 4×4, Loren’s new IFS has more front and rear suspension travel, tighter steering, better weight distribution (just 14 lbs off from passenger to driver side), more power, a bigger footprint even though it looks much smaller than his previous machine… all while weighing in 1,000 pounds lighter! I spent my Saturday morning with Loren, going over all the final dimensions, specs, and weights before the kickoff of the first preliminary race. I was, dare I say, geeking out over this new creation… and at that point in the weekend this machine was still very much a quiet release.

Loren would qualify 1st on Friday, take 1st in Saturday’s preliminary race, and take 1st in the main race by what amounted to be a significant margin. For an Ultra4 machine that is fresh out of the box, without an ounce of shock tuning, in the largest Ultra4 race outside of King of the Hammers… this didn’t go unnoticed. Drivers are getting copious amounts of seat time these days, thanks in large part to the plethora of Ultra4 races from coast to coast, so the field of driver talent is getting bigger & better every venue. Going back to the machine, so as to find that next best mechanical edge to win, is still a hot place to be. Loren has done that, in a big way, and it’s only the beginning for the new IFS creation. A huge congrats to Loren for winning Glen Helen, for the 2nd time now, and upping the bar yet again in Ultra4 racing.

Of course, we have more racing stories to share and will do so, in typical fashion, as the week goes by. Till next time.

You Would Be Smiling Too If You Won $7,000

Last night was simply off the hook. A two in the morning idea, spawned by Dave Cole and friends many months ago, turned out to be one very cool addition to the KOH week. Monday nights SRRS ULTRA4 King Shocks Shoot Out was simple in form, borrowing from the previously successful Hot Springs, AK Ultra4s at Superlift shootout run (event photos from that over at flic.kr/s/aHsjHMDsty ). Namely, a timed shoot out style race capitalizing on the East meets West, or Ultra4 vs Rockbouncer, theme. As was the case back in Hot Springs, the X vs Y theme was just the tease, really all anyone cared about was "could the best time be beat!". Back to last night, we got to see this play out once again, this time though we watched the action unfold on one of the most well-known KOH obstacles, Back Door.

Of course, it's worth mentioning the prize for fastest time last night was $7,000. That's not all, fastest "other coast" driver took home $3,000, and the best showman took home $2,500. The rules, start at the bottom of Back Door, and launch up as fast as possible. This lead to a night of roll overs, axles driving away from their vehicles, a cowboy "stripper" dancing on top of their rig (that's not a typo, this actually happened), and of course those that blasted their way to the top in record time.

So, the title and photo likely gave this one away, but it was KOH native and current king Randy Slawson that captured the fastest time (about 30.5 seconds ). Smooth, fast, effortless... basically what you would expect from the king. Congrats to Randy and the Bomber Fab crew for taking top honors at the SRRS ULTRA4 King Shocks Shoot Out. Be sure to stay tuned to all the action on ultra4racing.com/live/ , we're just getting warmed up!

Life of a Spotter — 2014 Badlands UMC

In our first race recap earlier this week, we touched a bit on the camaraderie that makes Ultra4 so unique. Enter the spotters of The Wall, a Badlands tradition that found it’s way to this race since inception. On a drivers 1st lap, when they make their initial attempt at the Wall, they often leave their co-drivers/spotters behind. It’s a bit of strategy, no doubt, time spent getting in and out of the vehicle is costly and co-drivers are most needed at The Wall anyway. Since this is a lap based race, spotters can wait at The Wall and be immediately on call when their team returns on their next lap.

So, one may expect these spotters to just sit back and wait for their respective Ultra4 to make a return trip before getting back to work. No such deal. This year, we had Scott Decker (Mike Colville’s co-driver) & Casey Trujillio (Loren Healy’s co-dirver), both of which just so happened to be the first two spotters at The Wall. For the next 2+ hours, these guys would work their asses off… winching, recovering, and just making sure every racer was at his or her best.

Pictured here is Scott Decker, running a winch line not for his own driver but for Erik Miller. These guys pushed themselves as if every vehicle were part of their own team. It’s an awesome tradition, the one at Badlands I most look forward to every year.
