The Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) is a wading bird in the Heron family Ardeidae and found in North America, Central Ameria, the Caribean and Galapagos Islands. One of the largest of Herons, it has a head to tail length of 01-137 centimtres (36-54 inches) and a wingspan of 187-201 centimtres (66-79 inches). They are found where my family live, and naturally very wary of mankind, flying off as soon as you are within fifty to one hundred yards of them.

Harrison is a small community at the Southern end of Harrison Lake where Harrison River flows inwards in the Fraser valley of British Columbia in Canada. Known for it's hot springs, it has a population of around fifteen hundred people and was named after Benjamin Harrison, who formerly worked as Deputy governor for the Hudson's Bay Company.

People of the Okanagan Nation Alliance live in eight communities in the interior of British Columbia, Canada and Washington, USA and more than four hundred band members work and live on the Osoyoos Indian Reserve here.

Here we see, Sciurus Carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel or Grey Squirrel), a tree squirrel native to North America and first introduced to the UK in the 1870's. Though it was largely responsible for the decimation of our own native red squirrel population, those are now on the increase and found in certain parts of the UK including Scotland. The Greys are still an ecologically essential natural forester regenerator.

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

    

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. (ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably).

  

With visits now in excess of 17.928 Million to my FLICKR site, used primarily these days as a fun platform to reach friends and family as I have now sold my professional gear and now take a more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to FLICKR, GETTY IMAGES and everyone who drops by.

A location that I so love visiting, bustling with energy and vibrancy, a myriad of creeds and colours, tongues and accents, a clash of cultures, cuisines and styles, just a marvellous place for any photographer to discover and enjoy. Here, I can lose myself to the visual styles, immerse myself in a spot of people watching in the park, grab a local brew and sit by the Ferry dock amidst the plethora of different spoken languages, and enjoy the relaxed and friendly banter in the glorious market place. Here we are on a wonderful man made island that crosses the water via some giant steping stones, and looking towards the Science World at Telus World of Science, located on 1455 Quebec St, Vancouver, BC.

The Bevan Avenue fishing pier is one of the main focal points in Sidney, and Work commenced on the pier in 1993 with Phase one, a 90 metre straight section being completed in 1996. A year later the 110 metre Phase two section was completed.

  

In the distance we see Mt Baker in Washington State, USA . Known to the Lummi First nation people ( Lhaq'temish) as Kwelshán ('Shooting place' in Nooksack), to the Halkomelem as Kwelxá:lxw, to Lushootseed speakers along the Skagit River as Teqwúbe7 “snow-capped peak'', to the Nooksack language as Kweq’ Smánit (“white mountain'') and also known as Koma Kulshan, (pronounced kō-ō’mah’ kool-shän’), the name for the Middle Fork which originates from the glaciers such as Deming and Thunder on the western slopes, she is an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington State in the United States, standing 3,286 metres tall and was first ascended in 1868, her last eruption recorded in 1880.

  

The name Mount Baker first appeared in print in Captain Vancouver’s 1798 narrative of his voyage around Vancouver Island. Legend has it that his third-lieutenant, Joseph Baker, was the first to spot the mountain while they sailed into Dungeness Bay on April 30th, 1792.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One thousand and ninety two metres at 10:31am on Sunday 17th May 2015 having taken the funicular railway up to Cairn Gorm Mountain Ski Area in Aviemore, Inverness-shire, Scotland. The site is close to Loch Morlich.

  

This is Scotland's only Funicular railway, and it takes you up to the Ptarmigan Restaurant at over 3500ft, from where this shot was taken. The ticket price was £11.50 for adults, a price worth paying for the amazing views, though the wind hits you like a curricane as you open the terrace doors to walk outside. We grabbed Hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows along with Caramel slice and a fabulous scone to warm us up before niping outside for more photographic adventures.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres, at 08:58am on Monday 28th December 2015, on a beautifully warm and sunny morning off Birdcage Walk and The Mall in front of Churchill's war rooms and The Treasury in Whitehall, looking back towards Buckingham Palace in the grounds of St James's Park. Situated in the City Of Westminster, the Park spans twenty three Hectares and is the oldest of the Royal Parks of London, with a variety of visiting and nesting birds that include Ducks, Canada Geese and Pelicans.

  

Pelicans have existed at St James's Park for over four hundred years, originally a gift from the Russian Ambassador to King Charles II in 1664, (and subsequently referred to as 'Ambassadors Pelicans), nowadays six individuals including Louis, Vaclav and Gargi who are all Great White Pelicans (Pelecanus Onocrotalus), also known as Eastern Pelicans, White Pelicans or Rosy Pelicans, reside on Pelican Rock at one end of the lake. They eat fish from the lake and are also hand fed, and are a much loved attraction. They have the largest wingspan after the Great Albatross of up to three metres, have a body length up to six feet and males can weigh up to 15kgs.

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

    

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. (ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably).

  

With visits now in excess of 18.509 Million to my FLICKR site, used primarily these days as a fun platform to reach friends and family as I have now sold my professional gear and now take a more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to FLICKR, GETTY IMAGES and everyone who drops by.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Forty seven metres, at 10:49am on Thursday April 20th 2017, off Via del Campidoglio and Via di San Pietro in Carcere, in Piazza del Campidoglio, of the statue 'Tiber'(originally Tigris), one of two 'river' statues (the other being the Nile), part of the Fontana della Dea Roma Campidoglio',Fountain of Dea Roma (Goddess Roma), which decorates the facade of Palazzo Senatoria built on the ruins of the Tabularium. The square was originally designed by Michelangelo with Palazzo dei Conservatori to the right, and Palazzo Nuovo to the left.

  

The fountain only came to be, some fifty years after Michelangelo had deisgned the original waterless piece, the new design made in 1588 by Matteo Bartolani of Citta del Castello and when the Tigris became the Tiber, the original Tiger was substituted for a wolf, placed beside Romolo and Remo (Romulus and Remus), and the original central statue of Minerva was replaced by a smaller statue of the Goddess Rome of Triumphans

Photograph taken at an altitude of One metres at 07:22am on Wednesday 9th September 2020, of a Large red slug (Arion rufus) off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.

  

Also known as the Red slug, Chocolate arion and European red slug, these are land slugs or round back slugs in the family Arionidae. The opening on the right side is a pneumostome or respiratory pore which feeds air to the lung. They have a striped foot fringe and pale sole, and can reach 150mm fully extended. Here we see the slug rolling up into a defensive position, with the mucus ball on the tail section clearly visible.

Here we see the slug rolling itself up into a ball which makes it harder for a predator to gather up and swallow.

This Thirty seconds long exposure was taken at an altitude of Zero metres, in the golden hour around sunrise at 06:14am on Tuesday 24th September 2019 around sunrise off 1st Street and Bevan Avenue, between the boat jetty and Bevan Avenue Fishing Pier in beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

  

The Bevan Avenue fishing pier is one of the main focal points in Sidney, and Work commenced on the pier in 1993 with Phase one, a 90 metre straight section being completed in 1996. A year later the 110 metre Phase two section was completed.

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

    

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. (ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably).

  

With visits now in excess of 17.910 Million to my FLICKR site, used primarily these days as a fun platform to reach friends and family as I have now sold my professional gear and now take a more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to FLICKR, GETTY IMAGES and everyone who drops by.

Photograph taken at an altitude of two metres at 12.49pm on Sunday 22nd September 2019 10km West of Victoria off Ocean Boulevard at the Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary at the southern end of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

   

Established in 1931, the 134-hectare sanctuary features a salt water lagoon and supports a host of wading birds from October through May each year.

  

Here we see a Male Brewer's Blackbird (Euphagus cyanocephalus), named after ornithologist Thomas Mayo Brewer, and distinguished by it's iridescent purple head (unlike the Rusty Blackbird to which it is closely related). Males are up to 10.3 inches in length with black legs and bright yellow eyes and a green and blue colour to the body feathers. It is classd as an American bird, and a New World Blackbird.

  

'Sunning', is a behaviour adopted by several bird species which involves sitting down, fanning it's wings or tail feathers, fluffing out it's feathers, tilting it's head, or even staring at the sun with one eye in an effort to release vital preening oils into the feathers, to help rid themselves of unwanted parasites, and possibly even simply because they enjoy it!

Here we see an adult Wood pigeon(Columba palumbus). Wood pigeons are the largest and most common pigeon in the UK, and forms part of the Dove and pigeon family, genus Columba, family Columbidae. Known locally as the 'Culver' in Southeast England, these game birds are a protected species in abundance with over five and a half breeding pairs in the UK, and can grow to 42cms in length and weigh up to 550g.

  

Wood pigeon is also eaten regularly in the UK, a meaty bird with a distinctive deep gamey flavour. It is low in fat and high in protein and iron with a delicate texture that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. Commercially bought whole Wood pigeons sell from as little as a few pounds each.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Fifteen metres at 09:38am on Tuesday 19th May 2015 off the A87 at Sligachan (Gaelic: Sligeachan), a small settlement on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It is close to the Cuillin mountains and provides a good viewpoint for seeing the Black Cuillin mountains.

  

The oldest known bridge is that still standing alongside the modern road. Whether it replaced an even older bridge, or more likely a ford, is uncertain. The bridge itself appears to have been built in the 1820s and consists of three arches. The middle arch is the widest, but the side arches are not mere flood arches, as the River Sligachan is a wide and ferocious piece of water for most of the year. The roadway is slightly humpbacked over the large central arch and only single track.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Forty one metres on Friday 29th January 2021 at 14:17pm on a cold but beautiful winter afternoon in January of an adult Eurasian Collared dove (Steptopelia decaocto) off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.

  

The Eurasian Collared dove is from the Pigeons and doves family and protected in the UK by The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 with a current green UK 'of least concern' conservation status thanks to more than 990,00 breeding pairs.

  

They measure 32cm in length with a 51cm wingspan and can weigh 200g.They first came to the UK in 1955 when bred in Norfolk, previously being confined to Turkey and the Balkans before 1930 as well as parts of China. After that, it spread quickly Northwest across Europe and also resides North of the Arctic circle in Norway, the Canary Islands and Morocco. .It was also introduced to Japan, North America and some Caribbean Islands.

  

The name Columba decaocto was proposed by Hungarian born botanist and entomologist Dr Emerich Frivaldszky von Frivald, in 1838. The female lays two white eggs and incubates them at night for between 14-18 days, the male incubating them during the day. Though not as bold as feral and Wood pigeons, the pairs that feed in my garden like to be together and prefer the safety of a bird feeder.

  

They live for around three years with one recorded at seventeen, and have been recorded flying over 600 Kilometres from their birth place. They are monogamous birds.

Here we see a Young adult western gull (Larus occidentalis), a large white headed gull ranging from British Columbia in Canada to Baja in California and Mexico.The Lagoon is one of seven Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in British Columbia, and an important stopover for birds journeying between North and South America. Visitors include geese and Swans, Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons, plus many other species of birds.

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

    

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. (ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably).

  

With visits now in excess of 19.686 Million to my FLICKR site, used primarily these days as a fun platform to reach friends and family as I have now sold my professional gear and now take a more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to FLICKR, GETTY IMAGES and everyone who drops by.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Forty three metres at 09:09am on Tuesday April 18th 2017,off Piazza del Colosseo and Via Celio Vibena within the Colosseo, (Also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre and Colosseum), Rome, Italy. It is situated in Regio IV Templum pacis (Temple of peace).

  

Built of concrete and sand, the largest amphitheatre ever built with construction commencing in AD 72 under Emperor Vespasian and completion in AD 80 under his successor Titus. The Colisseum could hold up to 80,000 spectators and was home to gladiatorial contests, slave executions, public spectacles and later, animal hunts and re-enactments of battles and drames using lifts and mechanisms to hoist scenery and animals onto the stage.

  

The Colisseum ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era and went on toi be used for housing, a quarry, workshops, a fortress and a Christian shrine. A massive earthquake in 1349 destroyed the outer southern wall, followed by neglect, and theft of metalwork and stones over the years. There have been many calls to demolish the Colisseum, and even plans to turn the structure into a hotel, but nowadays the building is protected and revered as one of the most iconic landmarks in Rome with a fascinating history, and a link to a worldwide call for the banishment of capital punishment.

  

An adult entry fee in April 2017 is twelve Euros, which allows a two day pass into the Colosseum and nearby Palatine Hill.

Taking off from the flying club at Victoria International Airport in beautiful Sidney by the Sea, on Vancouver Island, Canada, we flew all around the Gulf Islands amidst the glorious morning sunshine. The ferry terminal in this frame is the Swartz Bay terminal, located off Pat Bay Highway on the Saanich Peninsula. We are approaching via Pym Island and Knapp Island (the larger on the right), in the Southern Gulf islands of British Columbia, Canada.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Thirteen metres,in the magic of the Golden hour around sunrise, at 08:21am on Monday 28th December 2015, on a beautifully warm and sunny morning off Birdcage Walk and Horse Guards Road in the grounds of St James's Park.

  

Situated in the City Of Westminster, the Park spans twenty three Hectares and is the oldest of the Royal Parks of London, with a variety of visiting and nesting birds that include Ducks, Canada Geese and Pelicans.

  

Big Ben is a nickname given to The Great Bell of the clock at the North end of the Palace of Westminster. The actual tower was originally called the Clock Tower and subsequently renamed in 2012 as the Elizabeth Tower, renamed to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

  

The tower was completed in 1858 and the Bell used nowadays and designed by Augustus Pugin, was in fact a second casting made in 1858 due to the original one two years earlier being damaged beyond repair whilst being transported to the tower by sixteen horses.

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

    

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. (ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably).

  

With visits now in excess of 17.647 Million to my FLICKR site, used primarily these days as a fun platform to reach friends and family as I have now sold my professional gear and now take a more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to FLICKR, GETTY IMAGES and everyone who drops by.

Here, we are looking over towards Mt Baker in Washington State, USA from beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Also known as Koma Kulshan, (pronounced kō-ō’mah’ kool-shän’),she is an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington State in the United States, standing 3,286 metres tall and was first ascended in 1868, her last eruption recorded in 1880.

  

The name Mount Baker first appeared in print in Captain Vancouver’s 1798 narrative of his voyage around Vancouver Island. Legend has it that his third-lieutenant, Joseph Baker, was the first to spot the mountain while they sailed into Dungeness Bay on April 30th, 1792. Also known by the Lummi as Kwud-Shad, and Koba (meaning 'high mountain always covered with snow', was the Skagit name.

Wood pigeons are the largest and most common pigeon in the UK, and forms part of the Dove and pigeon family, genus Columba, family Columbidae. Known locally as the 'Culver' in Southeast England, their name is often written in two forms, either as Woodpigeon or as Wood pigeon. Polumbus is the ancient Greek for “a diver”, derived from kolumbao meaning “to dive, swim, or plunge”. κόλυμβος is the Ancient Greek for Columba, which means “a diver”. These game birds are a protected by The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and with over five and a half million breeding pairs in the UK, they are classed as he UK conservation status, meaning they are of least concern.

  

They can weigh between 480-550g with a length from 40-42cm and a wingspan of 75-80cm.The common wood pigeon was originally described by Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (Carl Von Linne after his ennoblement) in his 1758 and 1759 tenth editions of 'SYSTEMA NATURAE', where it was placed with all the other pigeons in the genus Columba and coined the binomial name Columba palumbus which is from the Latin palumbes for a wood pigeon. Of the five subspecies recognised worldwide, the Madeira species is now extinct.

  

Wood pigeon is also eaten regularly in the UK, a meaty bird with a distinctive deep gamey flavour. It is low in fat and high in protein and iron with a delicate texture that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. Commercially bought whole Wood pigeons sell from as little as a few pounds each.
