Photograph taken at an altitude of One hundred and forty eight metres at 15:23pm on Thursday 8th November 2018, off Þingvallavegur 36 in the Þingvellir National Park, the only UNESCO world heritage site on the Icelandic mainland. It is situated East of Rekjavik in the municipality of Bláskógabyggð in southwestern Iceland and is known historically for the Alþing (Althing), the site of Iceland's parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries.

  

The park sits in a Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. To its south lies Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland.[

This one second long exposure was taken at an altitude of Five metres, at 06:57am on Thursday 23rd September 2019 around sunrise off 1st Street and Bevan Avenue, between the boat jetty and Bevan Avenue Fishing Pier in beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

  

A morning of strong winds, cloud, dark brooding clouds and rain with a sky that reminded me of the mischievous nature of the legend of Tó Neinilii, or Tonenili the Navajo God of rain who liked to play with the clouds and rain.

A pair of nesting Red Robins are keeping me company in the garden, dive bombing the cats and sing at the tops of their lungs each day, which is always a pleasure to hear. Here we see the Male European robin (Erithacus rubecula), also known as the Robin, or Robin redbreast, a small insectivorous passerine bird, more specifically a Chat.

****This frame was chosen on February 18th 2015 to appear on FLICKR EXPLORE (Highest Ranking: #332. This is my Sixty Seventh photograph to be selected, which for me is both amazing and exciting, as I never view my images as worthy compared to some of the awesome photography out there. EXPLORE is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period.

  

Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! From this huge group of images, the Flickr Interestingness algorithm chooses only 500 images to showcase for each 24-hour period. That's only one image in every 17,000!..... so I am really thrilled to have a frame picked and most grateful to everyone who visited, favourite and commented on the frame*****

I wish I could tell you exactly where this photograph was taken, but sadly, the Nikon GP-1 GPS module cannot hook up inside a modern day Boeing 747. What I can say is this....

  

Photograph taken at 18:03pm, some Six hours and thirteen minutes into our Nine hours and fifteen minutes flight, at an altitude of approximately 39,000 feet on board British airways flight BA0087 from London Heathrow (LHR) Terminal Five to Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

  

The aircraft was a Boeing 747-400 Quad jet travelling at approimately 456-520 kts and a total distance of around Four thousand seven hundred and fourteen miles. We were seated in row J12 and 13 Premium Economy and the food and in flight entertainment was as usual, totally wonderful.

  

We touched down at YVR at around 14:00hrs, taking a one hour taxi ride to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal where we boarded the Two and a half hour long Tsawwassen BC to Swartz Bay BC ferry over to Vancouver Island, from there a short drive home to where our family reside in beautiful Sidney by the Sea, British Columbia, Vancouver Island, Canada.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Four metres, at 12:27pm on Tuesday 24th September 2019 off the West Coast Road 14, on the shoreline of French Beach Provincial Park.

  

French Beach lies within the traditional territory of the T’Sou-ke First Nations people. Their name comes from the Sook tribe of Straits Salishans, from the SENĆOŦEN language word T'Sou-ke, the name of the species of Stickleback fish that live in the estuary of the river .

  

Their economy was based on hunting, fishing, and gathering, and extended families among the Straits people owned the lands and resources, which could not be sold, only inherited.

Situated on the scenic Strait of Juan de Fuca on the west coast of southern Vancouver Island, French Beach Park is a 55 Hectares site and can be accessed via Highway 14, 20km west of Sooke. It took it's name from pioneer James French who took two years to travel from New Brunswick to Victoria. His home and favourite beach would become French Beach Park in 1974.

This Six seconds long exposure was taken at an altitude of Three metres, at 05:30am on Tuesday 3rd September 2019 in the beauty of the Golden Hour around sunrise off 1st Street and Bevan Avenue, beside the boat jetty in beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

  

In the distance we see Mt Baker in Washington State, USA . Known to the Lummi First nation people ( Lhaq'temish) as Kwelshán ('Shooting place' in Nooksack), to the Halkomelem as Kwelxá:lxw, to Lushootseed speakers along the Skagit River as Teqwúbe7 “snow-capped peak'', to the Nooksack language as Kweq’ Smánit (“white mountain'') and also known as Koma Kulshan, (pronounced kō-ō’mah’ kool-shän’), the name for the Middle Fork which originates from the glaciers such as Deming and Thunder on the western slopes, she is an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington State in the United States, standing 3,286 metres tall and was first ascended in 1868, her last eruption recorded in 1880.

  

The name Mount Baker first appeared in print in Captain Vancouver’s 1798 narrative of his voyage around Vancouver Island. Legend has it that his third-lieutenant, Joseph Baker, was the first to spot the mountain while they sailed into Dungeness Bay on April 30th, 1792.

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

    

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably.

  

These days I take a far more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, a Nikon D850 FX Pro body as my trusted companion, I travel light with less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. With a population of just Two hundred and ninety one, it is an important service centre catering for the coastal strip between Skógar and the west edge of the Mýrdalssandur glacial outwash plain.

  

Reyniskirkja Church belongs to the Vik benefice in the Skaftafell Deanery, and was built in 1929 with the parsoange moved there in 1932.

This Thirty seconds long exposure was taken at an altitude of One metres, in the golden hour around sunrise at 06:36am on Tuesday 24th September 2019 around sunrise off 1st Street and Bevan Avenue, between the boat jetty and Bevan Avenue Fishing Pier in beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

  

The Bevan Avenue fishing pier is one of the main focal points in Sidney, and Work commenced on the pier in 1993 with Phase one, a 90 metre straight section being completed in 1996. A year later the 110 metre Phase two section was completed. Currently in February 2023, tenders are being invited for major renovations to the pier to include Localized replacement of coating system on pier structures, Installation of a pile wrapping system, Localized steel repairs, and Installation of supplemental sacrificial anodes.

  

Work will commence April 15th 2023 and terminated in September 2023.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One hundred and thirteen metres at 11:30am on Thursday 8th November 2018, off Biskupstungnabraut 35 and Haukadalsvegur F333 at Gesir, a geothermal location where a geyser erupts every eight to ten minutes. The location is in an area formerly known as Hverasandar at the northern edge of the southern lowlands in Haukadalur, Iceland.

  

The geothermal field has a surface area of around 3 km² and the former spouting Geyser here, named Hvitamelur is dry. To the south are two small spouting Geysers known as Marteinslaug and Gufubadshver, and the current oldest spouting Geyser Northernmost is Geysir itself.

Taken at an altitude of Eight metres, seated on a fold up camping chair at 06:34am on Saturday 21st September 2019 around sunrise off 1st Street and Bevan Avenue, between the boat jetty and Bevan Avenue Fishing Pier in beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Nine metres at 11:08am on Wednesday 9th March 2022 at 81 Central Parade, in front of Waltrop Gardens, beside the current pier looking towards the remnants of one of the original piers at Herne Bay on the Thames Estuary, CT6 5JQ, England.

  

I left at 9am for the One hour journey down with the prospect of a cloudy day with scattered sunshine. At Herne Bay it was time for my usual stop at 'Makcari's Coffe Lounge & Ice Cream Parlour' for a slice of cherry and almond gateaux and a lovely latte coffee before a pleasant stroll on a mixed day.

  

This is all that remains of the third pier at Herne Bay, with just the steamer passengers landing stage remaining after a storm January 11th 1978 which wrecked the 3,787ft (1,154m) wooden pier, designed by Wrighton & Co which originally opened in 1899.

This photograph was taken at an altitude of Seven hundred and sixty six metres, at 13:19pm on Monday 9th May 2016 in the Pine Pass off John Hart Highway 97, beside Bijoux Falls in the Bijoux Falls Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada.

  

The park is free to use and found on the Southern aproach to the summit from the town of Mackenzie.

  

The Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta Stelleri), is an Omnivore Native to North America and related to the Blue Jay.It's diet can include snakes and lizards, the eggs of oither birds, as well as seeds and berries. With such a varied diet, it is no wonder that this beautiful little bird thrives.

Photograph taken on August 10th 1985 of Löwendenkmal the Lion monument or the 'Lion of Lucerne', hewn into rock by Lukas Ahorn between 1820-21 and designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen. The rock relief commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution when revolutionaries attacked the Tuileries palace in Paris.

  

Located at Denkmalstrasse, just outside the city of Lucerne, a Latin inscriuption below the monument says: ' To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss '. The lion lies in an alcove above a small body of water, fatally wounded, impaled on a spear.Take tram number 1, 19, 22 or 23 towards Luzern, Löwenplatz. The statue is a short walk from here.

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus), derives it's name from the Greek for 'Sea eagle', and the 'bald' denotation actually derives from an older meaning of 'white headed'.Bald Eagles can be up to forty inches in length with a wingspan up to seven and a half feet and can wigh up to 6.3kgs. The females are generally 25% larger than the males.

This Two seconds long exposure was taken at an altitude of Two metres, at 05:36am on Tuesday 3rd September 2019 around sunrise off 1st Street and Bevan Avenue, bewteen the boat jetty and Bevan Avenue Fishing Pier in beautiful Sidney by the sea on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

  

In the distance we see Mt Baker in Washington State, USA . Known to the Lummi First nation people ( Lhaq'temish) as Kwelshán ('Shooting place' in Nooksack), to the Halkomelem as Kwelxá:lxw, to Lushootseed speakers along the Skagit River as Teqwúbe7 “snow-capped peak'', to the Nooksack language as Kweq’ Smánit (“white mountain'') and also known as Koma Kulshan, (pronounced kō-ō’mah’ kool-shän’), the name for the Middle Fork which originates from the glaciers such as Deming and Thunder on the western slopes, she is an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington State in the United States, standing 3,286 metres tall and was first ascended in 1868, her last eruption recorded in 1880.

  

The name Mount Baker first appeared in print in Captain Vancouver’s 1798 narrative of his voyage around Vancouver Island. Legend has it that his third-lieutenant, Joseph Baker, was the first to spot the mountain while they sailed into Dungeness Bay on April 30th, 1792.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Eighteen metres in the golden hour around sunset at 18:09pm on March 24th 2012, off undercliff Drive and opposite Menzies East Cliff Court on the golden sands of Boscombe Beach in Bournemouth, in the ceremonial county of Dorset, England.

  

The end of a wonderful day having driven for over three hours and one hundred and fifty miles just for a daytrip to Bournemouth!

  

I'd been taking shots of the beach as the golden sunlight streamed into the lens and noticed the young guy and his girlfriend kicking the football about. A stray shot had him coming into my frame and so I waited and composed a few frames as he gathered up the ball. It felt like a magic moment against the beauty of Mother Nature's offerings. The end to a perfect day, before that crazy journey back home! Boscombe pier is in the background.

**** This frame was chosen on August 17th 2018 to appear on FLICKR EXPLORE (Highest Ranking: 291. This is my 104th photograph to be selected, which for me is both amazing and exciting, as I never view my images as worthy compared to some of the awesome photography out there. EXPLORE is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period.

 

Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! From this huge group of images, the Flickr Interestingness algorithm chooses only 500 images to showcase for each 24-hour period. That's only one image in every 17,000!..... so I am really thrilled to have a frame picked and most grateful to every one of the 17.950 Million people who have visited, favourite and commented on this and all of my other photographs here on my FLICKR site. *****

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

    

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably.

  

These days I take a far more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, and having moved from professional Nikon equipment to consumer bodies and lenses, I travel light less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to GETTY IMAGES, and the 23.024+ Million visitors to my FLICKR site.

The Champ de Mars (Field of Mars), is a large park located in the Seventh arrondissement between the Eiffel Tower to the Northwest and Ecole Militaire to the Southeast. It was named after Campus Martius in Rome, Italy. It originally measured 42 hectares, but was reduced by architect Jeran-Camille Fromige for the 1890 World Exposition.

  

The Eiffel Tower was originally designed by Gustave Eiffel and constructed between 1887-1889 as the entrance to the worlds fair in that year. It is now the worlds most visited paid monument, standing 324 metres tall (1,063ft) with three floors and eight lifts and was the tallest building in the world from 1889 to 1930.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Six metres, at 14:23pm on Monday 20th January 2020, on a beautifully sunny afternoon off Birdcage Walk and Horse Guards Road in the grounds of St James's Park. Situated in the City Of Westminster, the Park spans twenty three Hectares and is the oldest of the Royal Parks of London, with a variety of visiting and nesting birds that include Ducks, Canada Geese and Pelicans.

  

Pelicans have existed at St James's Park for over four hundred years, originally a gift from the Russian Ambassador to King Charles II in 1664, (and subsequently referred to as 'Ambassadors Pelicans), nowadays six individuals including Louis, Vaclav and Gargi who are all Great White Pelicans (Pelecanus Onocrotalus), also known as Eastern Pelicans, White Pelicans or Rosy Pelicans, reside on Pelican Rock at one end of the lake. They eat fish from the lake and are also hand fed, and are a much loved attraction. They have the largest wingspan after the Great Albatross of up to three metres, have a body length up to six feet and males can weigh up to 15kgs.

Reynisfjara boasts several enormous basalt stacks and powerful, roaring waves off the Atlantic Ocean, and was voted as one of the top ten non-tropical beaches to visit on the planet by National Geographic. The Reynisdranger basalt stacks are named Langsamur, Landdrangur and Skessudranger or Háidrangur.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Thirty six metres at 13:39pm on Friday 9th November 2018, off Bjoovegur 1 in the land surrounding the settlement of Gönguleið um Fimmvörðuháls at Skógafoss waterfall situated on the Skógá River in the South of Iceland at the cliffs of what once was the coastline. The coastline has now receded a distance of approximately five kilometres from Skógar.

  

The waterfall is one of Icelands largest, with a width of fifteen metres and a drop of around two hundred feet.Icelandic legend tells of the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, who buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. Locals salvaged only a ring from the chest of treasure which is now located in the Skógar museum.

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus), derives it's name from the Greek for 'Sea eagle', and the 'bald' denotation actually derives from an older meaning of 'white headed'.Bald Eagles can be up to forty inches in length with a wingspan up to seven and a half feet and can wigh up to 6.3kgs. The females are generally 25% larger than the males.

Here we see an adult Starling (Sturnus vulgaris)in it's beautiful and vibrant summer plumage. A passerine bird with more than 1.8Million breeding pairs in the UK, it is none the less on the Red conservation list as the species is threatened globally. It can measure up to 21cm in length with up to a 42cm wingspan and weighs between 75-90g.

  

They eat invertebrates, fruit and are fond of fat balls and mealworm along with other bird seed in the garden.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Thirty four metres at 13:45pm on Friday 9th November 2018, off Bjoovegur 1 at Skógafoss waterfall situated on the Skógá River in the South of Iceland at the cliffs of what once was the coastline. The coastline has now receded a distance of approximately five kilometres from Skógar.

  

The waterfall is one of Icelands largest, with a width of fifteen metres and a drop of around two hundred feet.Icelandic legend tells of the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, who buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. Locals salvaged only a ring from the chest of treasure which is now located in the Skógar museum.

Photograph taken at an altitude of One hundred and ninety six metres at 13:33pm on Thursday 8th November 2018, off Biskupstungnabraut 35 at Gullfoss (Golden falls) waterfall, on the Ölfusá river in the South-west of iceland, located in the canyon of the Hvítá (white river)which begins at the Hvítárvatn glacier lake on the Langjökull glacier in the highlands of Iceland.

  

This tiered cataract waterfall has two drops of around eleven and twenty one metres, falling into a crevice thirty two metres deep and flows at a rate of between eighty and one hundred and forty cubic metres per second depending on the season.

New to my neighbourhood is this magnificent young Chausie, a hybrid originally bred from the non domestic species JUngle cat (Felis Chaus) and a greater number of domestic cats (Felis Silvestris catus). This one is absolutely gorgeous, incredibly friendly and the single greatest predatory hunter I have ever witnessed in my garden, catching several mice in one sitting with consumate ease. This is a brown ticked variant of the species that live to around 14 years and are highly intelligent, social and loving.

  

Chausie kittens in the UK fetch between eight hundred and two thousand pounds each.

Here we see, Sciurus Carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel or Grey Squirrel), a tree squirrel native to North America and first introduced to the UK in the 1870's. Though it was largely resonsible for the decimation of our own native red squirrel population, those are now on the increase and found in certain parts of the UK including Scotland. The Greys are still an ecologically essential natural forester regenerator.
