Another view of the nifty phono-to-USB pod I reviewed in MAKE No.05 ("Toolbox" section).
The price is only $60 at B & H ....but every time they get some in stock, they sell out immediately.
Uses firmware-only USB interface called AVR-USB.
Circuit is essentially what's on the AVR-USB page.
Plus has ISP connector for reprogramming or using the port pins the ISP uses.
Also has a 6-pin female header, with 3 pins connected to 220Ω resistors for direct connection of an RGB LED. One pin for ground. And the other two pins are connected to the RX/TX lines so you can use the USART.
Current firmware is a multi-channel software PWM LED driver.
iPad camera connection kit. It does not only connect iPhone & camera to iPad, but also normal USB keyboard. Although there is error message, just dismiss it. The USB keyboard can use normally. To switch between different language, press "windows+space".
Here you can see the final detail I added before sealing everything up - the red activity LED. I lined up the tiny LED on the USB drive with a piece of translucent plastic, which pokes through to the write protect notch in the corner of the disk.
You can now emulate USB devices with the GoodFET from Python. It's damned handy for fuzzing device drivers!
To play along, order the MAX3421 Eval Kit and flash your GoodFET with the latest firmware. 'goodfet.maxusbhid' will emulate a HID keyboard.

A new bus temporarily in the First York fleet is YK66 CBC, a Yutong E12LF single decker electric demonstrator which was first seen in use with Arriva Merseyside - this is to see use around the full First York network during its stay here, though the start of its trial in York was delayed due to one or two niggles. The York OpCo manager tweeted a pohoto of this on the day it arrived a couple of weeks ago, but it has been sat in the depot until January 4 when it first went out onto service running the Yellow Line 8 P&R service - for the first two days of use this bus only came out in the late afternoon and it wasn't until day 3 that a full day was put in. The interior feels light and spacious, and is fitted with USB charging sockets along with a ceiling-mounted passenger information system (though currently only running in demo mode). The front destination display on this is either a Bright Tech or Centrad system, which is certainly an unusual choice considering Bright Tech haven't been in business for several years and Centrad haven't made a display to these dimensions for quite some time either and is certainly older than the bus - my suspicion is that this went to its first customer (Arriva Merseyside) without any destination equipment fitted, and they fitted surplus equipment from their own stores. The First York manager has told me that the front display "isn't ideal" and may be revised in some form or other.
Seen with the Red Line 7 P&R route at the designer outlet centre at Fulford.
Precies wat ik zocht. Aanrader voor als je een kwaliteitsmic voor een leuke prijsje zoekt: 80 euro. Rechtstreeks op je USB poort, geen drivers nodig.

Idea for a built-in USB power supply for homes. With the EU ruling making mini-USB charging on all mobile phones a necessity, this seems a logical step.
Basically, when my PC is "ON", the USB ports receive power and turn on the relay which allows the 120V to flow through and operate things. This is a low tech solution - I cannot turn the port on and off remotely via software. For that there are lots of printer port mods out there.
My PC does not feed USB power when shut down - your mileage may vary.
** DO NOT ATTEMPT UNLESS YOU WANT TO FRY YOUR PC, BE ELECTROCUTED AND THEN BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN....
