The beautiful and artistic Lake Lenexa Dam’s spillway which my damsel and I accessed in 231 acre Black Hoof Park in Lenexa Kansas while we were there in the late spring this year supporting a go-live at the regional laboratory. Quiet park either the 35 acre Lake Lenexa at its center that several of our team accessed during multiple work journeys to Kansas. Enjoyed a marvelous theatrical experience of Disney’s Lion King with my damsel and her sweet granddaughter at this gorgeous venue in San Francisco California, the Orpheum Theater on Market Street in the heart of San Francisco in San Francisco’s Tenderloin area. The Orpheum Theater a magnificent late Spanish Gothic theater that opened in 1926 originally as a showhouse for Vaudeville in San Francisco. It was renovated in 1970, then again in 1998 a major renovation that modified to venue to be able to stage Broadway type productions and is a locally designated San Francisco Landmark. Owned by BroadwaySF Theatrical Production Company which also owns the Golden Gate Theater a few blocks away which is owned by no surprise Robert Nederlander, the Nederlanders owns many of New York City’s Broadway venues. This image of the theater was taken right after the show but what not in the picture for the most part is the sad state of the Tenderloin area in San Francisco, to me having grown up in New York City area in the 1970’s and 1980’s very reminiscent of the general disarray and dismay that we saw in NYC during that era. Though I could draw that parallel, it’s not exactly the same, many business just boarded up with plywood painted black. Very sad as I image it was once a more vibrant area. The historically significant City Market in Kansas City Missouri has ties that go back to 1857, it was a central location for trading, commerce, horse trading, political rallies, church revivals, medicine show and even circuses. It is considered Kansas City’s oldest continuously-operating business, basically in the same location in close proximity to the Missouri River. The city leased the property to Jacob and Fred Scheibel for $50 a year, it quickly expanded to become a major trading post for those who were westward bound. In the early Twentieth Century during the 1920’s, the market area grew to house Kansas City’s City Hall, two newspapers and the county courthouse. Further renovations came as a result of FDR’s New Deal post the depression in 1930’s in the 1970’s bars, restaurants and other establishments have expanded the scope of what is offered though changing carousel of the ever growing city has seen City Hall in its new location further east and exodus of other entities. I frequented the City Market several times day & night during the multiple business trips in the area in 2023 and the evening this image was captured, I was accompanied by my west coast damsel who was also there for business purposes. Fort Langley National Historic Site located at its original location on the palisades on the Fraser River was initially erected as a fur trading post for the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1827. A stop on a trade route for the British Empire in the midst of a large Indigenous population, bartering for furs, salmon and cranberries. Was out on our deck with my damsel examining our deck garden when I looked up and saw the Waxing Gibbous moon in the sky. Went in an got my Tamrac camera bag and Bogen/Manfrotto tripod and shot off a few frames. This was my favorite. The moon, this month’s strawberry moon will be full at the Summer Solstice 2024 when the sun is at its highest on June 21st in 2024 the moon on 21 will be the lowest it’s been in many years, which gives the moon a larger appearance. New York City skyline at night, the Empire State Building the most prominent, to its right a few streets up on 42nd Street is One Vanderbilt and the simplistic 1,396 432 Park Avenue amongst which is itself part of Billionaires Row. Billionaires Row are a series of almost ridiculously high residential tower on Central Parks South end, mostly on 57th Street, obviously as the name suggests only affordable to the well to do billionaire crowd, most from outside the United States. I saw a saddening post on Instagram from someone walking on Fifth Avenue from Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village with an image of a new skyscraper that partially blocks the Empire State Building, her point was valid as it appears the building craze in New York is obstructing many of the landmarks, thus creating the paradigm of progress verses history. Will the classic, symbolic & historic Empire State Building be surrounded by taller plain towers one day? It already is, just ask the neighbors across the river in New Jersey, Hudson Yard limits the views and the amazing Chrysler Building on 42 Street’s view is now obstructed in many ways. The historic Santa Clara Relief Society House is located on the historic Hug-Gluber property in Santa Clara in Washington County Utah. The Victorian Eclectic structure is the oldest remaining Latter Day Saint church building of the Santa Clara pioneer community. Used until 1949 by the LDS’s Relief Society which is akin to women’s auxiliary organization of the Mormon church. It also served as a schoolhouse (1908-13), the village’s makeshift clinic (1938-1950) and served as the local post office (1953-1963). Restored although damaged by an earthquake in 1992 after a local grass roots effort to prevent that was successful, it is now a museum of the Relief Society and LDS pioneer artifacts. One of the famous iconic pair of majestic lions that adorn the entrance of the main branch of the public library with a festive holly wreath around his neck. When the $1.4 billion Fulton Center opened in 2014, it created a transit hub that allowed access 9 New York City subway lines and under street passageway to the PATH station of the World Trade Center. Fulton station which is on the Manhattan Fulton Street (there is a Fulton Street in Brooklyn across the East River) was named after Robert Fulton the engineer that designed and invented the first successful steamboat in the United States called the Clermont in 1807. Eventually New York State granted Fulton exclusive rights to steamboat transport on the Hudson. The trial run was from New York City to Albany covering 150 miles. The center piece of the MTA’s Fulton Center, literally is its oculus, a conical dome with a circular skylight that features 10,000 triangular stainless steel reflective panels that you can see in this image, so clean and modern. The 200 foot tall Highbridge Water Tower on a bluff towering over the Highbridge and the Harlem River to its east it was once part of the Croton water system that supplied fresh water to New York City. The Croton Aqueduct provided water much of the southern and central parts of Manhattan with a system that principally relied upon gravity for water pressure since opening in 1842. The northern part of Manhattan however had a greater elevation than the reservoirs at 42nd Street (Byant Park today) and Central Park, thus were unable to benefit from Croton’s fresh water. The solution was to build a reservoir in a higher location, adjacent to where the Highbridge Water Tower is today, was an 11 million gallon reservoir at the highest point of Manhattan that served 90% of the northern part of the island. The last 10% was handled by a water tank contained at the top of the Highbridge Tower, all a part of the High Service Water Works. Never forget the events of September 11, 2001 when our passenger airliners were turned into weapons against our own citizens. Always remember those brave souls on Flight 93 who rallied against their terrorist captors and crashed that airliner in Pennsylvania , the brave and selfless who rushed into the burning monoliths we referred to as the Twin Towers whose efforts thwarted and reduced the horrific number of casualties. Another image from last years photo walk with NYC Photographers of the Tribute in Lights taken in Manhattan on the southern gate of City Hall Park. It was at the behest of one of our brilliant organizers Chris because of the converged perspective. Always on point with his suggestions love the resulting image. The first time I went to capture images of the Tribute in Lights, it was still being staged at what then was referred to Ground Zero, internal bickering between NY state, NYC and Silverstein Holdings had delayed the rebuild of the WTC site in actuality nothing emerged from the slurry walled 16 acre pit until 2012 when One World Center’s base finally emerged at street level. Accompanied that my night by my now deceased son age about 9-10 if I recall , we drove to Hoboken, I took some Ektachrome images on my Minolta X-700 film camera with my 70-210 mm F/4 Rokkor MD lens. Sadly the lab that developed my slides from that night ignored the guide pictures I initially took an sliced most of the Tribute in Lights images up, maybe one usable slide on the whole roll. Opening in 1921 the 3,000 seat Mainstreet Theatre was a design of the Chicago firm Rapp & Rapp and was the only theater in Kansas City Missouri designed by the famous firm. The stylish exterior is a blend of Neo-Classical and French Empire styles accented a dome encircled by circular windows that top the lobby. Another first for the Mainstreet Theater was it was the first in Kansas City to contain a nursery for parents attending shows. A subterranean tunnel connected the Mainstreet Theater to the nearby President Hotel and the basement & sub-basement was spacious to contain cages used for vaudeville shows that used live animals. Cages large enough for elephants fit and pools for seals. There was an elevator large enough to transport elephants up to the stage area. In 1924 a beautiful Kimball 3 manual 10 ranks theater organ was installed and that remained & was in use until 1961 when a dispute with the Musicians Union basically forced management to remove the organ. The beautiful theater was doomed for demolition by an owner who faced stiff grassroots resistance by local Kansas City preservationist who prevailed and in 2006 was placed on the National Register of Historic Places (thought that is not always a deterrent for developers with enough money & influence). The Covid-19 pandemic forced the closure of the Alamo Drafthouse Mainstreet in 2020, Alamo Drafthouse declared bankruptcy in 2021 & declared it would closed permanently. B&B Theater chain came to rescue and reopen it in fall 2021 which is why in the image you see the B&B. The former military hospital on Governors Island in New York City which was built in 1935 to replace the original one that was constructed in the 1880’s. The building was designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White who were the designers of many of New York’s buildings built in the early twentieth century. Sunset by the single tower on the eastern modern suspension bridge of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge which replaced the original seismically unsound cantilever span damaged by the 1989 earthquake that opened in 2013, the most expensive public works project in California’s history.

An actual “manskip” at Empire Mines State Park in Grass Valley California located at the opening of one of the mine shafts. A skip which was similar conceptually to an elevator, but actually at an angle of approximately 60 degrees would lower and raise a larger group of men in & out of mine. It was able to lower mining crews at a downward velocity of 600 feet per minute up to depths of 4,000 feet. Aerial image of Donner Pass taken with my DJI Mini Drone during a photo outing with the Nevada County Camera Club at the Donner Tunnels , a series of abandoned train tunnels that date back to the mid nineteenth century. Donner Pass and Donner lake was named after an unfortunate emigrant party the was trapped in the area during the terrible winter of 1846-1847 mired in this location that led to the tragic death of some of the party.

Attending our first Fleet Week in San Francisco, the 2023 iteration, sitting by the San Francisco Bay watching the amazing Fleet Week Air Show sponsored by United Airlines. Since relocating to this coast of the country, I’ve probably attended as many airshows as I had ever attended in the east and this by far was the most astounding that I attended. This was the first time that I got to see and photograph the Navy Blue Angels squad. Celebrating their 77th year, started in 1946, the Blue Angels demonstrate the precision, teamwork, coordination and power of naval aviation, flown by the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The Goodyears Bar Bridge spanning the North Fork of the Yuba River leading into the unincorporated community with a population of 69 of Goodyears Bar in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Sierra County California. We attended a delightful and eclectic wedding of my sweet damsel’s lovely niece and her beau this past weekend and while walking down to the venue, I snaped this image of the bridge. The water of the Yuba River originates from the snow & ice melt from the Sierra Nevada’s and is so clear that upon careful inspection of my image you can see the bottom. The sculpture of ‘Seated Lincoln’ at the Essex County Courthouse is a statue of our nation’s 16 president that the artist Gutzon Borglum created in 1911 that depicted a worn & weary Abraham Lincoln his tall hat by his side during the darkest hours of the American Civil War. It was controversial at the time of dedication, but today because it rather public location, a lot of people sit next to 16th president for a picture or selfie. The carousel at Van Saun Park in Paramus New Jersey during Bergen County’s Winter Wonderland is beautifully lit up at night with its wooden horses. This particular carousel dates back to 2000, and Van Saun Park itself to 1960. My damsel and I rode this together at 2024 Winter Wonderland courtesy of my sweet youngest daughter, it was our first carousel ride together. New Jersey with all the beach towns of the Jersey shore was a haven for many carousels/merry go rounds, at its peak over 120 throughout the state. I remember my childhood, Asbury Park had at least 2, today there are none. The carousel house which is empty there is often photographed, but no carousel within it beautiful glass windows. I saw a figure that indicated that there are as few as 13 operating carousels withing New Jersey. The lovely simple oft photographed pylons at the Brooklyn Bridge Park on the East River shore facing lower Manhattan, alluring for so many reasons. The myriad of skyscrapers of the lower portion of Manhattan, the historical significance of the pylons pointing to a time when this area was swarmed with sea vessel bringing in & taking out goods, the historical significance of lower Manhattan where the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, New York City’s predecessor was located, it doesn’t matter, it attracts tourists and photographers alike for in its simplicity. The Venetian Tower of the Venetian Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas Nevada, is part of the Venetian-Palazzo Complex that at one point after the completion of the Palazzo was the world’s largest hotel with 7,100 rooms. The Venetian has features that allude to the Italian city of Venice during the 1400’s & 1500’s in its design and sits on the location of the former Sands Hotel & Casino Las Vegas which was torn down in 1996. The Venetian opened in 1999, designed by Stubbins Associates and Wimberly Alison Tong and Goo. Almost perfect camouflage of a majestic blue heron on top of falls, in Clinton in Hunterdon County New Jersey where the Mulhockaway Creek converges with the South Branch of the Raritan River right by the Red Mill Museum, one of the most photographed locations in New Jersey. It was the mill I was photographing accompanied by my west coast damsel when I spotted the beautiful blue heron and put my longest lens on my OM-D EM-1 with a 2X convertor to capture this image. Café Wha on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village is a historic live music & entertainment venue where legendary artists like Bob Dylan , Jimmie Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen and Richard Prior performed before becoming stars.

In 1959 a 19 year old Manny Roth bought a garage that used to be an old horse stable that you could only reach via steep stairwell that took you down to the garage. It continues to this day, the acts now get paid, back in 1960’s a hat was passed around to pay the acts with tip including those aforementioned legends. Ice & snow capped Mount Shasta at 14,179 feet is actually a potentially active volcano that last erupted about 1250 AD according to geological observations.
