A battery or similar structure near the summit of Diamond Head Crater just on the outskirts of Honolulu on the island of Oahu Hawai’i where once before current defense systems was manned by the IS military as it served as a point of defense for Hawai’i’s capital Honolulu. The ascent of Diamond Head was no small feat for me, though my damsel and her sweet daughter had a much easier time of the challenging switchbacks. Now a state park, vestiges of the military presence abound, like a 200 foot narrow tunnel that must be traversed to reach the summit of Diamond Head. The beautiful Brooklyn Public Library at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park’s Grand Army Plaza. Ground breaking for the library actually dated back to 1912, a Raymond Almirall Beaux-Arts design was the original plan back then. Unfortunately, the timing was bad as soon the United States was active participant across the Atlantic into the great world war (World War I) followed by the economic downturn that would become the depression, New York City Mayor John F. Hylan stops any further appropriations for building the edifice, essentially completely halting all work. In 1930 Brooklyn Borough President Raymond E. Ingersoll with the newly appointed library president/chief librarian take the original Central Library design revising it to reduce costs, and give the building a more modern look. Eventually the new design was given to architects Alfred Morton Githens and Francis Keally who designed the building that is seen in this image creating the Deco Moderne masterpiece. When it is dedicated in March of 1941, the ceremony is attended by then mayor Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and the library is dedicated to Raymond E. Ingersoll who was so instrumental in the library’s resurrection.

This striking building is more than just a library, it is on the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places and the exterior has landmark status from the Landmarks Preservation. The Bushkill Street Bridge or Bushkill Bridge or officially Easton-Phillipsburg Toll Bridge spans the Delaware River between Easton Pennsylvania and Phillipsburg New Jersey just north of the confluence of the Lehigh River into the Delaware. It was built in 1938 by The Bethlehem Steel Company which I’ve mentioned in prior post for the Delaware River Joint Toll Commission, the first bridge commissioned by this authority as it acquired previously owned bridges when it came into existence. A 500 foot metal fixed 18 panel multiple-type-connected Pennsylvania through truss bridge that was rehabilitated in 2015 and is part of Route 22. Known as the city of fountains Kansas City Missouri has over 200 public fountains throughout the city. This particular fountain in the image is the Muse of Missouri which features three pools right on Main Street. It actually officially known as David Woods Kemper Fountain as it was donated to Kansas City by David’s parents Mr and Mrs James Kemper Sr. for their son Lieutenant David Woods Kemper who perished when he led his platoon against the German forces in Italy during the Second World War. The wonderful Hoboken NJ Erie Lackawanna Ferry-Rail Terminal built in 1907 only one of two ferry rail stations left on the Hudson River from a bygone era when they were prevalent on the New Jersey side opposite Manhattan before the Holland Tunnel changed the paradigm. It is the only station in service utilized by New Jersey Transit, PATH and New York Waterway today. The rich green patina of the oxidized copper much of which was destined for the Statue of Liberty, but the efficient French ended up not needing for their gift to the United States. Alas yesterday night cloudy skies aborted any reasonable attempts to capture the first full moon of 2025, the Wolf Moon though I was able to make out Mars a steady light below the moon through my lens but unable to capture any usable frames because the cloud cover. However this evening, clear skies allowed me to capture a few frames at 98.2 % full, 2025’s Wolf Moon. SkyStar Wheel, a 150 foot Ferris wheel, was moved to San Francisco’s historic Fisherman’s Wharf in November of 2023 from its previous location of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, however, that was shortest journey it’s taken in its brief history. The wheel was developed by SkyView Partners and Mondial World of Rides, SkyView Partners is based in St Louis Missouri. The rides inaugural location was in Louisville Kentucky, on the banks of Ohio River in 2018 for the 2018 Kentucky Derby, Thunder Over Louisville which is held at Churchill Downs right there in Louisville. That same year it moved to Norfolk Virginias Waterside District. Then in the fall it made its way back to banks of the Ohio River but the other side in Cincinnati Ohio’s the Banks adjacent to Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to celebrate the Banks 10th anniversary. In March of 2020 the wheel was transported and reassembled at Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse as part of Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary, which due to COVID-19 pandemic was cancelled. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Interstate 80 traverses and transitions on the Island of Yerba Buena in San Francisco Bay by literally going through the island itself. Completed in 1936, the Yerba Buena Tunnel is 1,791 foot long two double-deck cast-in-place reinforced-concrete T-beam viaducts structure designed by Charles H. Purcell, Chales E. Andrew and Glen B. Woodruff. When built the Yerba Buena Tunnel was the first double deck tunnel in the United States and had the distinction of being listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest-diameter bore tunnel in the world measuring 76 feet wide by 56 high. In San Francisco with my west coast damsel a few weekends back on a photo walk with flickr’s San Francisco photo group celebrating flickr’s 20th anniversary doing a photo walk, we spent part of the weekend capturing images of the magnificent Goldengate Bridge both days, but this image is not of the Goldengate bridge, but rather it is the complex of Bethlehem Steel where the steel the forms the Goldengate Bridge was forged in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. Much of the steel of the famous New York City Landmarks, the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, bridges like the George Washington and of course the Goldengate were forged in the massive furnaces of Bethlehem Steel. The campus was enormous, these are vestiges of what remains and the enormous stacks and furnaces have been landmarked, preserved and the area turned into a multipurpose venue. Located on Peach Street across from Perry Square adjacent to Gannon University in Erie Pennsylvania is the Erie Club, a beautiful Greek Revival mansion originally built by one of the founding fathers of Erie Charles Manning Reed as a new home for his beautiful young bride. Construction was begun in 1846 and completed in 1848, featuring fluted Ionic order columns making the building stand out. Reed’s grandfather, Seth Reed was a American Revolutionary War hero noted for being one of the first settlers in Erie. Charles was known as “the steamship king” as he amassed the largest fleet of cargo ships in the United States, considered the wealthiest man west of New York City. His widow remained at the house until she passed in 1901. One of New Jersey’s most picturesque and photographed locations is located in western New Jersey alongside the Raritan River in the town of Clinton is a grist mill referred to as the ‘Red Mill’. When Ralph Hunt built this mill in 1810 on land he received in inheritance from his father Daniel Hunt its original purpose was that of a wool processing plant. Unfortunately, foreign cloth was relatively low cost so eventually even though some of the surrounding farmers would get their wool manufactured, Hunt’s business dried up and the mill came to a grinding halt. It was around 1828 to 1834 that John Bray and John B. Taylor (the Taylor family had taken ownership of the property began production wool in the mill again. The new owner John W. Snyder stopped the wool processing altogether and converted the mill in to a grist mill. Before all production stopped, it was a graphite mill and finally a talc mill when all activity stopped. Today it is a museum and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Captured this image while with my west coast damsel, returning from a wonderous weekend in Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania. Rockefeller Center’s tradition began in 1931 as Italian-American depression era construction workers working on the construction of the center itself decorated a 20 foot balsam fir with strings of cranberries, paper garland and tin cans as decorations. The rugged picturesque shoreline of La Jolla in San Diego California is filled with fascinating tide pools that teem with life from the Pacific Ocean.
