Blaine Washington is know as where the United States begins as it is the first city when crossing from British Columbia Canada to Washington state United States, with a population of over 5,000 with a rich history of fishing and logging. It is a port of entry between Canada and the United States with a pair border crossings at its northern end. The best adorned and finished edifice within the protective walls of Fort Langley British Columbia Canada located on the south part of the fortification was referred to as the ‘Big House’ and this fairly accurate recreation was built in 1958 celebrating 100 years after the British Colony of British Columbia was announcement was made at this very location. Within the Big House resided two important individuals and their respective families, the chief trader for the Hudson’s Bay Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company clerk at the trading post. The border of the United States was clearly delineated in 1846, with the Washington territory north of the Oregon territory, the Hudson’s Bay Company kept its trade post in place to move goods. In 1857 gold was discovered on the very Fraser River that the trade route relied on for transporting goods and just as they did in California, hundreds of Americans flooded Fort Langley looking for mining supplies. The British Empire was cautious of the annexation happy United States and on August 2, 1858, within the original Big House, James Douglas was appointed as governor of the new British Colony, British Columbia (named by Queen Victoria herself), under the condition that he sever all ties to the Hudson’s Bay Company, which Douglas agreed. The state of Washington in the Pacific Northwest has a unique and peculiar topography with the Puget Sound literally slicing through a great portion of the eastern part of the state, creating the Olympic Peninsula which itself is made up a peninsulas that jut out into the sound & many islands as well. As the logging town of Seattle grew into a city, the small amount of residents that lived on the Olympic Peninsula had a long trek around the borders of the sound to get to Seattle for provisions as such, even today with the automobile it is a long ride. The first iteration of a ferry system in the sound was private ferries, no organization but then in the last decade of the 1800’s & the first 2 decades of the 1900’s, a web of steam ferries the Mosquito Fleet which transported people,animals,food,supplies,merchandise & just about anything to the islands & shores of the Sound. Black Ball Line, originally Puget Sound Navigation Company the largest in 1919 began converting its fleet to accommodate automobiles. The last of the Mosquito fleet in the late 1940’s, Black Ball Line was put out of business as steam ships which were many times floating fire boxes were regulated out of business & state regulation of fares.The state government purchased the Black Ball assets in 1951 and re-established some of the existing lines. Orders were put in for ferries that could transport large number of automobiles to keep up with the transportation demands to a growing population. Washington had plans to replace the ferries with bridges eventually. Eventually never happened & today there are 21 active Washington State Ferries that traverse the Puget Sound like the one I captured at Kingston with their distinct white green color that move 18,000,000 yearly . A statue of legendary boxer Larry Holmes in Easton Pennsylvania in Scott on the banks of the Delaware River on Larry Holmes Drive just south of the Northampton Street Bridge. Larry was born in Georgia, but grew up in Easton, thus his nickname was the “Easton Assassin” and was the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World from 1978-1985 and was the last boxer to defeat the great Mohammed Ali. Fog evokes mystery and mysticism at times, many find fog rather disheartening, but I’ve always found play between fog and light amazing. Add reflections to that and in my opinion it always makes for interesting images, like this one of the Passaic River in New Jersey taken on the Wallington side of the river. The way the silhouettes of the trees reflect on the waters of the Passaic River is wonderful and reminds one of a time when the urban blight of the city on the other side of the river, Passaic wasn’t the principal factor that most associate this area with. Years of conservation after close to 100 years of toxic pollutants being poured unknowingly in the river by the many plants that lined the river during the Industrial Revolution are starting to slowly turn things around. Named after the engineer that designed it, Clifford M. Holland, the Holland tunnel when it opened in 1927 was the first Hudson River vehicular crossing and was at the time of its opening the longest underwater tunnel for vehicular traffic in the world. The Holland Tunnels length is 8,558 feet from portal to portal on the North tube, and 8,371 feet on the South tube at a height of 12 feet, 6 inches tall. Initially the state commission considered a bridge or a tunnel at the turn of the century, but the cost of acquiring the land to build a bridge with a minimum height of 200 feet to allow for marine traffic made it cost prohibitive. Biggest challenge outside of digging a tunnel under the Hudson River was ventilation. Four ventilation buildings 2 on each side of river, exchange the tunnel air every 90 seconds, though being in the tunnel in traffic over the years, the smell of diesel fuel is something I always remember in my dad’s un-airconditioned vehicle. Growing up in a very urban New Jersey town that was barely a square mile with population over 120,000 not counting the undocumented, WNY had a nice but not over the top S.H. Kress & Co on the same block on our famous Bergenline Avenue as our F. W. Woolworth another famous five and dime contemporary department store. However Samuel Henry Kress’s stores which date back to 1896 to 1981 had 100 architects on staff that designed over 200 stores between 1900 & 1950 that were basically ornamented works of art that set a new standard on comercial architecture. The sheer glass walls of the T-Mobile Center located adjacent to the Power and Light District. The T-Mobile Center which was formerly The Sprint Center until 2020 when T-Mobile acquired Sprint opened in 2007 as a modern 19,000 + seat venue replacing much of the activities of the Kemper Center which had a similar seating capacity which was opened in 1974 and has since been converted to Hy-Vee Arena for youth sports. A historic Pelton Wheel that was used in mining gold during the great California Gold Rush in Nevada City California that sits at Robinson Plaza in Downtown Nevada City. I set 3 learning-proficiency-practical goals photographically for 2025 to continue my growth/evolution as an image maker, it was 3 specific areas where I lacked practical/real-world experience. This image was taken with the amazing Lensbaby Composer with a Sweet 35 Optic, which I’ve been carrying in my Tamrac bags for the last 7 years but have not used much. Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway New Hampshire is a heritage railway in the Mount Washington Valley that offers rail excursions and train rides in the area of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. The Buffalo Bayou is a slow moving 53-mile river that originates in Katy Texas, flows right through the heart of Houston through the Houston Ship channel flowing into the Galveston Bay and Gulf of Mexico. Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver British Columbia Canada is a small community on the western end of the North Shore of Vancouver at the entrance of Howe Sound. As seen in this image to the right it is a very active ferry port of the BC Ferry system. The weather during our stay at BC was typical Pacific Northwest, rainy & foggy exacerbated the smoke from the many fires in Canada and in the northwest United States also very apparent on this photo. Traveling the deep fog which is more the norm in the Pacific Northwest with my damsel at the helm, I captured this image of the northern end of the Astoria-Megler Bridge in Megler Washington just before going on the bridge at Point Ellice to cross the mouth of the Columbia River to get to Astoria Oregon. The 4.1 mile bridge was built in 1966 is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America as part of US Highway 101 or the Pacific Coast Highway. Newark Pennsylvania Station or Newark Penn Station is situated within New Jersey’s largest city Newark on the western bank of the Passaic River. It was funded by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and the city of Newark designed by the prestigious New York City architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White, the station is a mixture of Art Deco and Neo-Classical with a price tag of 42 million dollars. When it opened in 1935, there were trains running to New York every 16 minutes, using the PRR tunnels, getting passengers directly to and from the heart of Manhattan faster and more efficiently than all their competitors. Still in use today as an intermodal hub for train, Newark Subway/Light Rail and NJT Bus services. Originally built a Kansas City Power & Light headquarters in 1931, this masterful Art Deco 36 story landmark was the tallest building in Missouri for 50 years. Beautifully restored and repurposed today it is being used as the Power & Light Apartments and the Grand Hall, an event space for Kansas City. Certainly the small isle of Kauai of the Hawai’ian archipelago with Mount Wai’ale’ale its tallest peak referred to as the wettest spot on Earth somewhat lived up to its reputation during our delightful stay on this tropical paradise. An image of the Isleton Bridge in Walnut Grove California just north of Isleton California that was built in 1923, thus more than a century old spanning the Sacramento River in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. This portion of the Isleton Bridge is a double-leafed draw bridge referred to as a bascule from the French word for balance scale as the bridge utilizes counterweights to assist in the opening & closing of movable sections. The steel Strauss heel-trunnion bascule span and rainbow bridge portion of the span was designed by the Strauss Bascule Bridge Company (Strauss Engineering Company) from Chicago Illinois that was run by noted engineer Joseph Strauss. Strauss’s involvement with construction of these California bridges probably assisted him in getting his foot in the door so to speak eventually achieving the position of Chief Engineer for the design of the Golden Gate Bridge. In Las Vegas Nevada, a new venue, The Sphere is an state of the art, immersive music and entertainment venue that constructed by MSG or Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corporation that runs and owns New York City iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden & Radio City Music Hall and sport franchises New York Knicks and New York Rangers who’s chairman and CEO is James Dolan. Being from and living in the NYC metropolitan most of my life, very familiar with Mr. Dolan and the vociferous Knicks fans, though this season the team is in a good place. The exterior of the Sphere is a mass 580,000 square foot LED screen, that can show video & images that are just amazing. The wide open and large temple Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City was built in 1873. The congregation’s origins in New York go back to 1808. When this beautiful house of worship had its final touch a 286 foot tall steeple in 1876, it was the tallest building in New York City at that time. Architect Carl Pfeiffer, a 37-year-old German émigré infused the structure’s interior with technological innovations providing cooling in the summer & heat in the winter to the congregants from sources in the basement. Southern Pacific Railroad Davis train station in Davis California that currently provides Amtrak service to passengers in California’s Capitol Region. This particular station is a mission revival architectural style open in 1913 built by Southern Pacific Railroad replacing an wooden two story station that dated back to 1868, the first train station in California’s Yolo County. The station was upgraded in 1913 at the behest of then Dean of the University of California Davis who believed the antiquated wooden structure was not sufficiently dignified for the growing university. Davis was originally Davisville Junction as the two. Literally grew around then new depot in 1868. The historic Nevada County Bank in Downtown Grass Valley California beautifully lit at night which traces its origins to 1917 when it first opened its doors. Today it has been wonderfully restored and now being used by multiple tenants at the location and it is owned by locals Craig Hamilton and Lore Reynolds-Hamilton. The beautiful Greek Revival building was affectionately known as the ‘Little Temple of Finance’ to locals when it was in operation as a financial institution. When I was an undergraduate student at Rutgers University Newark New Jersey campus in the early 1980’s across the street from Rutgers was NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology) where I admired Eberhardt Hall from across the street, looking so out of place with its Gothic architecture amongst the modernistic concrete & glass buildings of both Rutgers & NJIT & a Newark High School (no longer there). I never ventured there while a student, but while on Grand Jury duty for the county of Essex there in Newark back a few years ago, I went to my alma mater and saw that some restoration had been done to Eberhardt Hall so I captured this image and walked across the street to check out what now had become the NJIT University Alumni Hall. The restoration took great care to ensure period authenticity. It was built in 1857, a rare example of mid-19th century Elizabethan style Gothic architecture with the elegant turrets and battlements that are reminiscent of 15th & 16th century castle, one of two Elizabethan Gothic buildings in New Jersey. When it opened in 1857 it was the Newark Orphans Asylum which had modern conveniences for that time period of gaslight, steam heat and running hot & cold water. The rusted furnace stacks of the furnaces of the former Bethlehem Steel Plant in Bethlehem Pennsylvania that are part of a 10-acre campus encompasses what once were the main furnaces of the second largest steel producer in the United States at one time. A grass roots efforts has kept these historic and iconic stacks intact, a historic monument to a company that invented the I-beam, supplied much of the steel early in the Twentieth Century the skyscrapers of New York City and built over 1,100 warships for both World Wars. The beautiful and classic Alabama limestone exterior of Philadelphia Pennsylvania’s William H. Gray III 30th Street Train Station which sits on the banks of the Schuylkill River in the University Heights area of the city of brotherly love. The powerful Pennsylvania Railroad constructed the 30th Street Station to replace the inadequate small & inefficient Broad Street Station in Center City. The 200 foot very oxidized Bethlehem Steel retired blast furnaces to the right of this image are part of the Steel Stacks complex which preserves what was the lifeblood of the steel that was used to build much of New York City’s skyscraper. Bethlehem Pennsylvania was built around the steel industry at its peak, Pennsylvania’s Bethlehem Steel Mills employed thousands of residents, its output building much of the skyscrapers and US navy’s ships for two world wars during it almost 120 years of production by the Lehigh River.
