Gregory Avenue Bridge that spans the Passaic River connecting the city of Passaic in Passaic County to the town of Wallington in Bergen County New Jersey is a 245 foot metal multiple-type-connected Pratt through truss bridge that was built in 1906 by the Owego Bridge Company of Owego New York. The machinery and control booth that allowed the entire span to swing to allow boat passage was removed in 1985 and the span was refreshed and rehabilitated subsequently in 1989. Though the original concept Santiago Calatrava has remained for the most part intact, like everything else in the World Trade Center rebuild after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, there were changes to reduce some of the cost. The cost of this station still ended up around 4 billion. The Oculus in now a new beautiful open space within New York that is in fact 90 feet longer than the concourse of Grand Central Terminal. Housed in Albert Spencer Wilcox Building in Līhuʻe, Kauaʻi, Hawai’i. Is the Kaua’i Museum. The museum is housed in a historic building whose original purpose was to house the public library when it opened in 1924. Kaua’I is the only island not conquered by King Kamehameha and thus not part of Kamehameha Hawai’ian kingdom and geologically speaking is the oldest of the Hawai’ian Islands. When it was originally built in 1938, Dicky Ridge Lodge was the dining area for visitors that stayed in nearby cabins. Built by the concessionaire company Virginia Skyline Company, it was purchased by the National Parks Department in 1957 and converted to a visitor’s center for Shenandoah National Park. The cabins long gone, but this beautiful fireplace and mantel in this image recall the former splendor, a period prior to plane travel and motor inns when families would vacation closer to home in such lodges and establishments. What people who traverse the Williamsburg Bridge which connects the East Village in Manhattan to Williamsburg In Brooklyn is that it opened in 1903, it was one of the last major bridges whose design like that of other bridges prior connecting Manhattan to the outer boroughs centered around the major mode of transport at the turn of the Twentieth Century which was horse drawn carriages. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world at time of its completion and that reign lasted until 1924. When construction began in 1896 Brooklyn was an independent city, but when completed a borough of New York. Walter Percy Chrysler, whose amazing career as a locomotive machinist, who purchased a locomotive in 1908 that he took apart and reassembled serval times before using it, was hired by Charles Nash of Buick part of General Motors in 1911 to use his intellect and mechanical knowhow to solve engineering & production problems. When founder William Durant returned to helm at GM in 1916 Chrysler was made president and general manager of Buick. Resigned in 1919 because of direction Durant was taking GM. Hired to rescue ailing Willys-Overland, which he did and was financially rewarded, though he failed to take it over. Then he worked with another ailing automotive company Maxwell which he would eventually acquire successfully and eventually became Chrysler Corporation. Chrysler envisioned an amazing skyscraper in New York City (he was living in Great Neck on Long Island) that would when he brought this property on 42nd Street from Coney Island developer William H. Reynold for $2 million and he hired William Van Allen to design his crowning jewel, the 1,048 foot Art Deco masterpiece with its massive 125 foot spire. The tallest building in the world until the Empire State Building opened in 1931, the lighting in the upper windows did not happen until late in the 20th century that is seen in this image captured by Grand Central Terminal. At Brooklyn’s natural highest point in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, Battle Hill in Green-Wood Cemetery is the statue which is the subject of my post today, Minerva the goddess of battle & protector of civilization which is on the Higgins’ Family tomb plot in Green-Wood Cemetery. Charles Higgins, a wealthy man who made his fortune in Brooklyn selling India Ink which filled fountain pens during his period, was irked by the Battle of Brooklyn place in history being often a footnote in the American Revolutionary War. The Battle of Brooklyn was in fact the first engagement of the rebellious Americans after the signing of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britan, the fierce standoff that occurred on Battle Hill was the only triumph for the Americans in an otherwise rather disastrous battle that left General Washington retreating to regroup for battle another day. In 1920 (144th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn) Higgins donated the plots in front of his family tombs and built the Alter of Liberty & the Minerva beautiful sculpture to pay homage to the Battle of Brooklyn’s only successful America parlay. The statue of Minerva which I’ve captured a close up of her countenance in this image with Higgins mausoleum behind it, points to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor and if stand at Minerva’s side, face the same direction she is you can see Lady Liberty clearly from this hill. The beautiful distinct Dallas Texas Skyline, with the prominent Bank of America Plaza skyscraper with it lights blue this past week again as in a previous trip from the West Commerce Street Bridge or Viaduct that spans the Trinity River. The lights line both sides of the West Commerce Street Bridge that was built in 1930 by the Austin Bridge Company of Dallas designed by Francis Dey Hughes. The entire structure is composed of 3 main spans, a total of 1,969 feet in length, a metal cantilever stringer bridge with spans supported by concrete T-beam’s. This image was taken near the Trinity Overlook Park that my west coast damsel and I had discovered on a prior trip to the Big D earlier this summer, so I returned to get some images from the actual Commerce Street Bridge. Historically speaking, in 1908 a calamitous flood occurred when the flood waters of the Trinity River marked the flood gauge at 52.6 feet in Dallas. Floodway levees were built in the 1920’s, then improved up by the Army Corp of Engineers in the 1950’s. The Trinity River when John Neely Bryan first visited what would become Dallas in 1839 was much wider that what my damsel and I saw in our visit to Trinity Overlook Park, but over the last 90 years particularly the portion located by downtown has been relocated, channelized, reduced and straightened. With tensions high with Great Britan in the early 1800’s, American harbor cities like New York City constructed forts for protection against invasions from the former mother country. Southwest Battery was one of four fortifications built in New York Harbor during that period built on the rocks on the tip of Manhattan Island between 1808 & 1811 and it became headquarters of all the New York Harbor fortifications when General Joseph Bloomfield became commander of all the fortifications. The four forts kept the Brits at bay, none of Southwest Battery’s 28 canons never had occasion to fire upon the enemy. In 1817 it was named Castle Clinton after New York City Mayor, Dewitt Clinton who would later become New York Governor. Today it is the Castle Clinton National Monument part of the National Parks Service. Towering over the northern part of the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas Nevada is The Strat Hotel & Casino, at a height of 1,149 feet. 1966 International Loadstar 1600 that has been remarkably and amazingly restored/upgraded by Guzzi’s Kustoms, featuring a 1966 International Loadstar 1600 cab , a 1999 Ram chassis, 24” Alcoa Wheels powered by a 24V vp44 Cummings engine. Rising up 3000 feet from the Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park in California is the sheer granite face of El Capitan in this image with the warm light of the setting sun just kissing the very top of the historic formation. The natives called the peak Tutokanula, which translated is Rock Chief or captain. Thus, the Spaniards of the Mariposa Battalion translated the name to the captain or El Capitan once they conquered Ahwahnechee and Chowchillas in the Mariposa War. When entering into the the Oculus at the World Trade Center from the MTA’s E Train or going to the E Train platform from the same you will notice that you appear to be walking back in time, you are actually specifically to September 11th 2001 when the original World Trade Center Twin Towers were the victims of commercial airliners used as weapons. The passageway was left entirely intact, with the orange markings from the search & rescue teams still on the doors on the left of this image, as those teams frantically and methodically checked through the known passageways for survivors. The decision was made to preserve the passageway as it was, the floor, doors and lighting fixtures all as they were on that fateful day. The beautiful limestone Essex County Hall of Records on Martin Luther King Boulevard in the county seat of the county & New Jersey’s largest city Newark is a Neo-Classical architectural marvel designed by architectural firm of Guilbert and Betell with its cornerstone laid in 1926 and completed in 1927. The dark statue up front is that of Newark Native & WW II veteran US Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr.. The vaults in the edifices building contain black doored vaults that contain historical documents and artifacts of historic significance that were once scattered throughout the county. The Bethlehem Steel General Office Building on the 1,000 acre former Bethlehem Steel Complex in Bethlehem Pennsylvania was actually built or actually rear part of the building was built back in 1905 as a 4 story structure by Cope & Stewartson. In 1913 an additional floor containing private executive dining rooms was added the original 4 stories. Three years later, in 1916, the first seven floors of the ‘H’ which is what you can see in this image were added, finished by an additional 6 floors in 1928 both phases by the famous New York City firm McKim, Mead and White. Once Bethlehem Steel’s world headquarters, it was replaced by the 21 story Martin Tower in 1969 which ironically was imploded in 2019 after much controversy between preservationist and commercial entities. This became the general office and sales building. Captured this image while with my west coast damsel after visiting the delightful National Museum of Industrial History which is housed in the former Bethlehem Steel Electrical Repair Shop Building. There have been many proposals for repurposing this McKim, Mead and White marvel, but to date, none have panned out. I loved how sharp the lines and reflections were on One World Trade Center in this image thought the construction cranes give away the images age as this was captured during the construction of the Perlman Performing Arts Center which has been open since fall of 2023. Kansas City Missouri had the Parade of Hearts one of a kind arts tour that featured 150 heart sculptures that were strategically placed throughout the city affectionately known as the Heart of America. In the late spring of last year where my damsel and I were supporting a work project in a suburb of KC I was able to capture several KC Heart Sculptures. The first image was at Kansas City’s famous National World War I Memorial and Museum honoring KC “Honor Those who served” at the entrance and the second is of the Kansas City Chief’s tight end Travis Kelce at Kansas City’s Power& Light District. The Fire Island Lighthouse at 174 feet is the tallest lighthouse on Long Island located on the southern shores of Long Island on the Fire Island National Seashore of the National Park Service in New York. It has a 182 steps and it was completed in 1858 to replace its predecessor which was opened in 1826. It was the first sight ships coming from Europe would see heading into New York Harbor which became the fledgling United States busiest port after the American Revolution, thus a critical landmark to avoid ships running into the treacherous sandbars of the Long Island shore. The black & white daymarks were painted in 1891, it was taken out of service in 1973, but preserved by a wonderful grass roots group. Along the southern bank of the Missouri River in Kansas City Missouri between the Kit Bond and Heart of America Bridges is the Berkley Riverfront where I captured this image of the Heart of America Bridge spanning the Missouri River. What was fascinating about this image to me when I captured it was the layer of bridges behind the Heart of America Bridge, can you count how many there are? Adjacent to the Heart of America Bridge is the vertical lift truss Armour-Swift-Burlington Bridge a Railroad Bridge whose upper deck used which can be seen in this image used to be for automobile traffic. Next in line is another railroad bridge, barely discernible as its truss is very rusted and dark, the BNSF Railway-Hannibal Bridge. Farthest out are the triple-arch trusses of the John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Memorial Bridge, formerly the Broadway Bridge which used to carry Missouri Route 169 over the Missouri River since it opened in 1956. The John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Memorial Bridge was imploded earlier this year 2024, so I did not know it was slated to be destroyed even though I did see the ongoing construction of its replacement when I was there last year, so I did drive over it a few times to the old Kansas City Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport on the other side of the Missouri. Built in 1862 by the Virginia Turnpike Company to span the South Yuba River is the Bridgeport Covered Bridge in Penn Valley California. At 225 feet in length and 16 feet width it is the only remaining single-span Howe Truss, Burr Arch covered timber bridge in the United States. Recently restored with collaboration of a grass roots bridge preservation move and the state of California. New York City’s waters are constantly patrolled by New York City Police Department Habor Patrol boats. Here is such vessel in the East River near the Brooklyn Bridge. The Harbor Patrol for the city is a fleet of 11 vessels. Originally established in 1858 when the boats were all row boats, the current fleet patrols New York Harbor and provides added protection for aquatic events such as Fleet Week and various regattas held in the City. The Sacramento Valley Station’s beautiful ceiling with the classic chandelier in the middle, a grand train depot in the fashion of many of the stations during the golden era of railroad travel in the early 20th century. The Sacramento Southern Pacific Railroad Depot is still an active station both for Amtrak and for the Sacramento Light Rail system. It was built in 1925 designed by San Francisco architectural firm Bliss & Faville to replace the third Sacramento railroad depot. The Sacramento Valley Station is on the National Register of Historic Places. Beautiful patterns in the sand left behind by sand ripples as the waves recede with low tide at Butler Beach in St Augustine Florida. The sand granules with the broken and crushed shells intermingled with rock is particularly higher on the Florida Atlantic coast than further up the Atlantic Seaboard from what I saw during our wonderful stay in northeast Florida from my observations. The gorgeous rotunda with it spire that is 146 feet high of the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne Wyoming had its cornerstone laid in 1887 three years before it was granted statehood in 1890. The territory of Wyoming was carved out of the Dakota, Utah and Idaho territories by an act of Congress in 1868 while Ulysses S. Grant was president of the United States. The Met or the Metropolitan Museum of Art located is in fact actuality within a portion of Central Park on Fifth Avenue’s famous Museum Mile. This image, from my digital archives, is from 2013, not a lot has changed structurally to the main museum since then. The web splash page indicates “Over 5,000 years of art from around the world” and that not an inaccurate description of the museum’s contents. Olmstead and Vaux did plan for some type of museum in their original plans for Central Park. What would become the Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 but the first Calvert Vaux-designed wing opened in 1880, the museum grew from a singular gallery to the monumental and vast building it is today. In fact its collections are so expansive that the Met has two other locations, the Met Brewer & the Cloisters up in the northern part of Manhattan. This monumental Fifth Avenue entrance hall and façade are the design of American architect Richard Morris Hunt in the early 20th Century. The Erie County Courthouse in the county seat of Erie Pennsylvania to the eye of the average beholder has twin wings with each with 6 Corinthian Columns supporting the pediments but there’s a story to the twin wings. The west wing was built between 1853-1855, the design of Thomas U. Walter. The second wing designed by Walter T.
