When back east in New Jersey a few weeks, visiting the Paterson Great Falls district which I always seem to do as it is very close to where my youngest daughter resides, I sadly found out that gorgeous historically landmarked Catholic church on Ciani Street, St. Michael the Archangel, was closed indefinitely until the Paterson Catholic Diocese can come up with a solution. The property’s history dates back to 1836 as lot was originally purchased by a small group of Methodist in 1836 according to the National Register of Historic Places. St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church opened in 1929 to serve the local Italian community that was concentrated in this area of Paterson, look at the street name Ciani. I visited the parish when I was a volunteer photography instructor for the Paterson Youth Photography Project back in 2020 when we were allowed to take the children into the house of worship to allow them to photograph. I took this image of the gorgeous interior while there. Structural integrity is one of the issue the diocese is facing as well as a very small congregation which today is mostly of Mexican or Central American origins, the Italians abandoned urban Paterson for the Jersey suburbs decades ago. March 1st was its last mass but current Paterson Mayor has authorized the city’s Historic Preservation Committee to submit a letter of intent to repair the large towers which are the principal structural deficiency as it is the first and only Italian church in Paterson. . iPhone 7. #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @kehcamera @mpbcom #iphone7 @visit_nj @newjerseyisntboring @apple @newjerseyisbeautiful

The interior of New York City’s Christ Church United Methodist temple on the upper eastside of Manhattan is a remarkable work of art, with amazing mosaic tiles adorning the gorgeous interior of the church. I captured this image during the annual 2018 New York Open House where beautiful and sometimes unavailable locations of the City are opened for the public to view ( I also volunteered annually for my last 4 years back east prior to COVID). The United Methodist Church was the Christian Society that was referred to as Methodist found at Oxford University in England by John Wesley. An Irish lay preacher Phillip Embry established the Methodists in the city of New York in 1776 and post the American Revolutionary War’s conclusion were the first religious body in America to form an independent organization. This beautiful temple was built in 1931-1933 but the Great Depression and then World War II resource shortages delayed the work of the planned mosaic work from happening until 1948-1949. Currently there was a restoration effort going on of the marvelous interior that was put on pause by Governor Cuomo’s ‘New York State on PAUSE’, and for those in NYC area, every second Sunday after worship tours of the beautiful interior and sanctuary are offered. The Toadstool Hoodoos in Kane County, Utah are impressive at any time during the day, but lit against a magical moonlit sky with a dash of milky way, they are a sight that will take your breath away.

The beautifully lit spire and clock face of the Mercantile Bank Building on Main Street in downtown Dallas Texas was built in 1943 for the Mercantile Bank which was founded in Dallas by R. L. Thornton and three friends in 1916 and grew to be one of the largest financial institutions in Dallas & the Southwest. The 36 story Art Moderne style skyscraper was designed by Walter W. Ahlschlager of NY who was the architect that designed the Roxy Theater in New York City. The Mercantile Bank Building was the only major American office building completed during World War II, and was the tallest building West of the Mississippi River for over a decade. The 115 foot tower was added in 1947 and used as a broadcast tower for KERA. The building when it opened featured a massive marbled lobby with Art Deco wood murals by California artist Millare Sheets which were the largest in world at the time of its completion and were saved by Dallas investor Tim Headington when Cleveland-based Forest City Enterprises purchased the building and began converting the former office building into a residential building now referred to as the Merc. The New Jersey Meadowlands was actually once mostly a very larger forest of white cedars, particularly the area where today the Meadowlands Sports Complex sits and the areas south all the way to Kearny. The first white settlers in what are the Meadowlands today were primarily British merchants from Barbados, so for time during 1700’s, the meadows were known as New Barbados. The growing metropolis across the North (now Hudson) River, New York had an ever growing need for lumber, so many a lumberman live in the Meadowlands and the ravaging of Cedars for New York City was in full swing. The northern portion of the meadows, to the north of the sports complex was exploited for it clay that lied beneath the meadows, creating a vibrant brick-making industry from 1870-1950’s. The brickyards in the town of Little Ferry in 1895 at its peak produced one hundred million bricks. Those bricks contributed to building in New York City, Newark & Paterson NJ and Providence Rhode Island. As land barons looked to expand to build more housing, pig slaughterhouses and garbage dumps, 2/3’s of the meadows were landfilled, include the aforementioned Meadowlands Sports Complex. The industrial age used the meadow as a dumping ground until 1968 when the newly formed Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission(HMDC) was charted by New Jersey to put into place severe restrictions on what could be dumped into the rivers and meadows. This park Richard W. Dekorte Park which spans Lyndhurst and North Arlington allows visitors to walk around the meadows and view the wildlife that has returned as the waters have gotten cleaner because of concerned conservationist. From 10 miles across the Puget Sound from Port Orchard Washington through the atmospheric haze is Seattle’s iconic Space Needle, a symbol of the Emerald City, was originally constructed for the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle as its centerpiece. Very much a symbol of the Emerald City, it was inspired by the broadcast tower in Stuttgart Germany as Edward E. Carlson scribbled his idea on a napkin while in Stuttgart in 1959 calling it the Space Needle as Carlson was the chief organizer for the 1962 World’s Fair. The three-legged tower opened in April of 1962, first day of the Fair whose theme was the 21st Century. 62 years later, still one of the Emerald City’s biggest attractions plans have begun for a massive refurbishment. While only 10 miles across the sound, it’s over 60 miles driving around the Sound, down the peninsula across the Tacoma Bridge up to Seattle via automobile unless one catches one of the nearby ferries. I’ve posted many images of the impressive interiors of Washington DC’s Union Station but the exterior of Daniel Burnham’s design is equally impressive and fitting to a transportation hub in our nation’s capital. It opened in 1907 and was completed in 1908 and at its peak in the 1940’s the number of passengers that used the station daily exceeded 42,000. As rail travel diminished in the 1950’s as aviation became the mode of choice, the impressive station fell into disarray. The owners of the station with diminished passenger traffic began looking for quick and easy fixes, doing repairs inexpensively. Fortunately the station persevered until in 1981 an act of Congress called the Union Station Redevelopment Act started the ball rolling in the right direction and by 1983 work began to restore parts of the station to its former glory. Four decades later, the station is once again a beacon in DC, another elegant structure in our nation capital. This picture of the exterior with Columbus Plaza in front shows the size and magnitude of Union Station. The Capitol Building was right behind me, within walking distance of the station. #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @kehcamera @mpbcom @visitwashingtondc @unionstationdc #olympus #omd #microfourthirds #micro43 #micro43photography

Located in Brooklyn New York City in the DUMBO section which faces the East River is the Robert Gair Company Power House, which at one time powered 8 buildings in this area that were built by Robert Gair at the turn of the Twentieth Century. Robert Gair, originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, was born there in 1839, served the North in the American Civil War, fighting in the first Battle of Bull Run in Manassas Virgina. Gair had a very successful business in paper specialties in Chelsea Manhattan that was so profitable that he moved across the East River to Brooklyn. In 1870 an accident became the cardboard box, and once the first food company, National Biscuit Company (predecessor of today’s NABISCO) also located in Chelsea, Gair outgrew his space and moved to Brooklyn in 1888. In 1905, his cousin George and Henry Turner, of Turner Construction Company a relative newcomer proposed a new concept that Turner was looking for someone to partner with. It was reinforced concrete that Turner believed could be used to build larger buildings. Robert Gair decided to do it and first of 8 buildings was built on the Brooklyn waterfront between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges that today is DUMBO, but back then was actually referred to as Gairsville. The Power House image here is one of those reinforced concrete buildings of the many surviving ‘Gairsville’ buildings that still dot the DUMBO area. Yes its back wall is sagging, but it’s still standing. This is the back of the Star Theater, a Cantonese Opera House who’s backend sits on Main Street in the California Delta Community of Locke. Locke was founded in 1915 and the Star Theater opened on the same year, a rare for the time-period 3 story wooden structure. The town of Locke now known as the Locke Historic District, came to be in 1915 built by Chinese immigrants from Heungshan [Xiangshan] County (modern day Zhongshan) from Guangdong Province, China. The historical significance of Locke is that it is the most complete example of rural, agricultural Chinese American community in the United States. Sometimes the story and the beauty is in the details, growing up and spending most of my adulthood in the New York City area I found that structures often communicate via the details. I have found that to be the case in Northern California as well like this image of Free Mason’s badge on the former Free Mason Lodge in on the main street of Old Town Colfax California. The year 1854 does not denote when the lodge was built but rather the year the order was established in the area, half a mile south of Colfax in Illinoistown, thus this lodge was known as Illinoistown Lodge Number 51 of the Free and Accepted Masons. The Fall Kill Creek running through Northern Poughkeepsie New York, captured while on an photo excursion organized by NYC Photographers Meetup group a few years back. The 38-mile-long Fall Kill Creek and Poughkeepsie relationship is intertwined throughout their respective history. Poughkeepsie dates back 18th Century after the land was purchased from Native Americans in 1686 by Englishman Robert Sanders & New Netherland born Myndert Harmense Van Den Bogaerdt. The city in 1836 averted disaster thanks to Fall Kill Creek when the fire department utilized the waters of the creek to douse the flames. Many industries, including Innis Dye Works, utilized the flow of the Fall Kill Creek for its labor in the Nineteenth Century. The water powered mills that ground corn & wheat until the Poughkeepsie Railroad bridge, aka todays Walkway over the Hudson was built in the 1880’s which changed the demand for industry. It was just used as a dump-way, until Dutchess County’s own FDR and his New Deal as President of the United States rehabilitated the waters ways, laying the brickwork & stonewalls you see in this image. However, the waterways once again during the 1960-1980’s were dumped in again but since the 1990’s a grass roots effort to restore has begun. iPhone 7 #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @kehcamera @mpbcom #iphone7 @apple @iloveny @dutchesscountyny @poughkeepsie.ny #poughkeepsie #fallkillcreek #nyc_photographers

The golden dome of the New Jersey State House or Capitol has an interesting tale to tell. Its gold dome is made up of 48,000 thin 23.5 karat gold leaf imported from Florence Italy that measure 6” x 6”. Each sheet cost $1 at the time and the funds were entirely raised by New Jersey school children including my oldest daughter which is why I’m familiar with the tale. The New Jersey Statehouse located in the state capitol Trenton was built in 1792, making it the third oldest in the nation. The current dome and rotunda which is Renaissance Revival, was designed by architect Lewis Broome and completed in 1889. The original was destroyed during a fire in 1885. A New Jersey Transit light rail train departs the historic Broad Street Station in Newark New Jersey in the early morning. The historic rail station that dates back to 1903 when it opened after two years of construction to replace the first Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad station is the design of Frank J. Niles, an architect for the DL and W Railroad Company. Once used for passenger transport as far as Buffalo New York, with stops at Scranton Pennsylvania, the historic landmark is an operating multimode transportation hub for New Jersey Transit, with the pictured light rail street level as well as buses connecting to heavy rail above that take commuters to Penn Station in New York City. iPhone 5c #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales @kehcamera @mpbcom @cityofnewarknj @visit_nj @newjerseyisntboring @newjerseyisbeautiful #newjerseyisntboring #newjerseyisbeautiful @essexcountycommissioners #iphone5c @apple

The chapel at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City which was built in 1873. The congregation’s origins in New York go back to 1808. When this beautiful house of worship had its final touch a 286 foot tall steeple in 1876, it was the tallest building in New York City at that time. Architect Carl Pfeiffer, a 37-year-old German émigré infused the structure’s interior with technological innovations providing cooling in the summer & heat in the winter to the congregants from sources in the basement. Captured this image of the chapel during an Open House New York weekend. Opening in 2007, the Prudential Center in downtown Newark New Jersey is the home of the New Jersey Devils National Hockey League team which is one of many projects that New Jersey’s largest city hoped would help revitalize the much maligned downtown area. The New Jersey Devils were shopping themselves around for relocation so there was speculation as to whether to continue the construction. Obviously they remained and in 2012 in a losing effort versus the Los Angeles King, at the end of Hall of Fame New Jersey Devil Goalie Martin Brodeur career hosted several Stanley Cup games. It’s the only New Jersey team as the Nets packed their duffel bags to move across two rivers to Brooklyn that same season in 2012, but did finish their string in New Jersey at the Rock. Day 31 image for American Cancer Society Photo a Day Challenge in October to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Very apropos for the last day, the beautifully pink lit rotunda of the historic 1898 Place County Courthouse on Auburn California for this month’s focus on the battle against cancer.

I’m taking a photo a day in October to help the American Cancer Society fight for a world without cancer. This is a very meaningful cause to me as I am currently monitoring and battling cancer. The Winter Garden Atrium at Brookfield Place formerly One Financial Center where New Yorkers and visitors alike can sit amongst palm trees adjacent (across the street) from One World Trade Center. When the horrible events of September 11, 2001 occurred and both the North & South Towers of the World Trade Center Collapsed, the debris literally blew out all the glass panes of the Atrim. Stunning Viking ship mural at Boehms Chocolate Shop in downtown Poulsbo Washington which was settled by a Norwegian in the 1880’s and then became a destination landing spot for Scandinavian immigrants since, referred to as little Norway, it is a charming little town with a delightful downtown with much Norwegian influence. It was named Poulsbo after a Norwegian village of the same name as the Olympic mountain range and the Puget Sound reminded the settlers of the fjords of Norway. This building itself is not historic, but sits on the spot in Auburn California where once a Union Pacific station structure stood, which why the current structure is done in the standard Union Pacific color scheme and has the signage it has.
