Unless you've had your head in the sand, you know that a lot of people would rather we didn't say "Christmas",but instead say "holiday". Well,I'm sorry, but I will continue to say "Merry Christmas"
as long as I have my right mind ! It is the celebration of our Saviour, and His name was Jesus ,or Jesus, the Christ. If not for Christ,I would not bother to celebrate just some holiday, and spend a lot of money for no reason.
There is a reason...and He is it !
I hope you celebrate His birth this season, and continue to say Merry Christmas ! God Bless !

I want to dedicate this sunrise to my Flickr buddy cage_ee. Thank for the wise words and I hope you enjoy the view.
I took this shot last week when I was headed to Kingsbury for the Air Fair and should have pulled off of the freeway much earlier, but it is what it is. I continued to watch my rearview mirror as this one unfolded, but couldn’t find an exit quick enough and a place to stop and enjoy the view. Taken somewhere between Houston and San Antonio.

Happy New Year!
I'm behind on editing things, so I jumped ahead so I could get this done just in time to still be relevant to the new year.
I feel like I should make some sort of goals for the new year, but I'm absolutely horrible at making concrete goals. I'm just going to try to continue to push myself and be the best person I can for the moment. Maybe one of my resolutions will be to start to form concrete goals and achieve them haha!
Unless I plumb the depths of my library there may not be many more DSLR images from me for some time. I had my camera and most cherished ultron SLII lens swiped from my workplace while I was attending a meeting. Anyhow, I am healthy as is my family...

Castle in Jersey, UK. The last I heard there was loads of debate about opening the place up to the public (which they should - we arrived and found great big wooden doors barring our way in) but, as often seems to be the case, no-one seems to agree on the best way to do it.
It's a really nice castle that becomes surrounded by water as the tide comes in, so, unless you want to get a boat, you have to walk out at low tide.

Been seeing their tracks, plus reports of sightings.... I knew they were around. Today we saw this coyote out and about in the park looking for, and finally did score...a snack of Red Backed Vole.

Unless you are leaving under a rock ... or you are in denial , the United States of America is not so United ... neither is the planet ... every country and every religion thinks that they have it right , but they do not in my opinion hence this is why I never became a citizen of the US ( technically I am still a French citizen , but I do not want any labels other than that of Earthling ... If I could I would cancel my French citizenship ) . Nowadays , I am not even sure that it does matter as we may all be living in a simulated world created by some sick entity . Call me crazy , but I still have hopes for a better future !

There are some traces of red summer plumage still on most of the birds apart from the one at the bottom right.
This was my final campsite for the season (unless something warm and miraculous happens). It was also the last shot I took of the weekend.
While my other 25 sheets were taken in cemeteries (and won't be seen for some time), this was shot on the banks of Lower Goose Lake. It was maybe 30 minutes after sunset, which necessitated the long exposure time of five minutes.
That's the longest I've exposed x-ray film. I didn't compensate for reciprocity failure, since I didn't even know where to start with that. There was definitely some, but not enough to really care about.
And keep in mind, exposing an additional stop would mean a ten minute exposure. Two stops would mean 20 minutes. And at anything that long, I'd have to take the fading light into account.
So I didn't. I just metered and shot. It's fine.

Unless I rent a boat, I haven't found a good location to photograph the B&O Railroad Bridge in Benwood WV yet. But, I thought framing a portion of it through this electrical sub-station at JLE industries kind of works.
The actual date of construction is a mystery to me. There is evidence of the viaduct construction on the Bellaire side from 1870-1872. The metal truss spans date 1901-1905. At the time it was built it was the longest stone arch bridge in the USA

Unless you are looking for images depicting man's impact on the planet, clear cut forests aren't real sought after locations. Whoever logged this area left a few standing which I have read is for wild habitat like birds of prey.....how thoughtful of them...... Regardless, this is a section of forest that's in transition in the Mt. Hood National Forest.
While it's sad to see, this did open up the sunset skies and emphasized the unique shapes of those that survived. Still a beautiful sight in my eyes.

Unless you live in the Seattle area you might not know that the main bridge connecting the West Seattle neighborhood to the rest of the city has been closed to traffic for emergency repairs since this spring.
What used to be a 10 minute trip downtown now takes between 30 and 45 minutes. Pandemic isolation combined with being cut off physically from the rest of the city has worn on the residents of this Seattle residential neighborhood.
Looking from the "shore" towards an almost inaccessible downtown made this picture mean even more to me and my choice for my "best" of 2020.
Unless I'm mistaken (which wouldn't be the first time) this is Clements Mountain which lies around a mile long hike from the visitor centre at Logan Pass.
To get to Hidden Lake Overview you need to follow the path which you can see snaking into the photo from the lower right corner up to the left hand wide of the mountain where you continue on another half mile to reach the viewpoint.

'The Harry Potter Tree', Blenheim Park, Oxfordshire.
This took me totally by surprise as I rounded a corner on the narrow winding footpath around this part of the lakeshore. (And it is quite scary).
Very few people around despite the promise of decent weather, and I had the place to myself.
This amazing Cedar of Lebanon had role in the 2007 film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and stands overlooking the lake and bridge, close to the place I took a recently posted image of them.
Now sensitively fenced off by a wicker fence to avoid over-excited children (many now adults) doing any damage it is probably part of the original planting by Capability Brown when he created the lake and landscaped the park between 1763-1774.
The tree is only a few yards from the bridge on a very beautiful, unsigned and easily to miss path that winds along part of the lakeshore and woodlands and can be part of a very attractive series of looping walks.
It can also be accessed FREE OF CHARGE as it is one of the public footpaths that cross the park.
(The Blenheim Palace website doesn't mention this annoying gap in their extraordinary commercialisation of the estate. Unless I've misread it there is a very hefty entrance fee of £28 that says 'Park and Formal Garden Only'. Fine(ish) if you want to visit the formal gardens which I wouldn't recommend at this time of year.
However I suspect by the amount of people strolling around, this is not policed, and a friendly blind-eye is turned to locals and dog-walkers.)
There are two free public footpath entrances quite close to each other just on the outskirts of Woodstock on the Chipping Norton road. As the road drops down to the little river as it leaves Woodstock, there is an entrance through a green gate that looks like a driveway entrance (painted ubiquitous Farrow and Ball 'Lichen' green as is the unspoken law in this part of the world.)
The other entrance is about 100 yards up the hill at the end of the raised pavement...
Both completely legal, loved and well used.

The secret world of the STS
This is the last episode of the current series of STS: Who Dares Shoots, unless Flickr commission another series or they decide to film a celebrity version or a Christmas special. So far, we have seen the recruits cope with barren living conditions, strength sapping yomps to locations on their doorstep, marmite and whiskey initiation ceremonies and shooting conditions to push them to their very limits of tolerance and sanity.
However, they must prove themselves and pass the most hideous task of all... a task so brutal and torturous that most military organisations have outlawed it. To this day only the STS and the SAS (a more humane version than the STS it must be said) employ the skills of the “Umpire”.
It is the Umpire’s sole purpose to utilise tactics that have been outlawed by the Geneva convention since the end of the Second World War. However, at the highest level, they are still permitted solely for training purposes in case the STS are ever called into action behind enemy lines or for domestic crises. Each recruit must recognise these tactics and handle the situation without retaliation. To this day all active Umpires within the STS are not known publicly and only the recruits from each intake have seen their faces. Their word is final and overrules all DT commands such is the responsibility of their role.
Unbeknown to the recruits, the Umpire had been planted within this intake from the very outset – watching, listening, observing! From the very start, subtle tactics were being employed – on day one, up on the glen overlooking Buachaille Etive Mòr the first signs were visible, but not to the uninitiated. Only when the recruits congregated around a feature such as a pond or a rock for foreground interest did the Umpire come into play, strategically placing tripod legs in the way of the recruit’s compositions. Later in the day the recruits travelled the road that winds down the glen to Loch Etive, bypassing the cliché shot that is James Bond and Skyfall - it’s only for the tourists now, although C4 couldn’t resist and bagged a couple of frames.
At the end of the glen is a lone tree framed by a classical glacial-formed u-shaped valley. Few know of this location and even fewer have ventured this far down, but C6 had recced the location in advance... could he be a DT or more importantly the Umpire? Many shots were taken at this location by all the recruits but equally, many were ruined by a tog wandering across their compositions and setting up a tripod mid-shoot. It wasn’t C6!
Maybe, in future uploads some of the recruits will share with us the number of canned images spoilt by the Umpire. I have it on good authority that C4 canned 137! If you find this Dick Dastardly technique of sabotage too unpalatable to cope with, rest assured it’s all in the name of training.
In most locations the recruits coped admirable, jostling for key positions, but keeping their cool about elbows and tripods in confined spaces. All except C7 who tended to wander off on his own at locations. The DTs will have to bring him in for a chat to see if the tactics of the Umpire from day one has psychologically affected the youngest member of the intake.
The climax came at Elgol and a location generally known in togging circles as Joe Cornish’s boulder or JCB... some of the wittier recruits renamed the ‘B’ with an anatomical part, but after all this is a family series so we’ll leave that up to your own imagination.
Such is the choice of locations and compositions in this area that the recruits split up in order to mitigate the effect of the Umpire – could they have worked it out? Where they all on the way to completing and passing the course... the next few hours would tell. C4 and C8 headed straight for JCB and bagged a few early bankers while the others spread themselves out leaving the Umpire to revert back to normal togging. It was only with the setting sun did the recruits congregate at JCB, but the Umpire had anticipated this and had encamped there first. It was a massacre... big tripod legs came out, spread wide and low. No gorilla pods, beanbag or handheld shooting here. The recruits were flummoxed – this was meant to be one of the holy grails of Skye for togs!
C8 had already proved to be nimble out in the wild and opted for the lowest position on the right where most of the other togs, including the Umpire couldn’t get into. The ever so enthusiastic and highly competitive C5 took his chance and encamped on the left - right under the nose of the Umpire... brave man! C2 arrived next but was forced to wait until the slightest of gaps opened... fair play to the recruit, he took his chance and was in like Flynn. Four down... three to go!
C4 arrived next but had to wait, so took the opportunity to polish his equipment as no chance of gate-crashing that spot. Eventually C2 gave way, presumably suffering from cramp, and allowed C4 to grab a few desperate shots as the last sun rays retracted from the JCB. Five down... two to go!
Alas, this is as good as it got. C6 never made it to the JCB, but to his credit opted for other, less shot compositions (that will count well with the DTs in the final selections – originality counts big!) It is not clear if C7 was ever aware of JCB, but true to his unique skills-set went in search of other gems (which will also count well with the DTs).
But readers do not be disheartened with this outcome, the objective of this STS course is to find the very limits of togging endurance, tenacity, team building and comradeship... and to push beyond. The important thing is, not one recruit went VW.
If you have a location, if no one else will go with you and if you can find them, maybe you can join the Tog-Team!
But remember – the first rule of STS is: You do not talk about STS.
And finally, if you’re out shooting and a man wearing a red cap walks into your shot or sets up a tripod too close for comfort, just remember he may be a member of the STS. Just don’t mess with the best!

One of a pair of Foo Dogs, or Buddhist Lions (if you prefer) on display at the Peabody Essex Maritime Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. The museum is probably the only thing worth going to Salem to see, unless you want to be showered with exhortations of "Blessed Be" by awful wiccan hippie cretins.
This is not a good shot, I only post it because there is a little story behind, and because I'd like to know what this little rodent really is... no need to comment, unless you know the ID :)
I was walking down a narrow trail, there were some ground steps, and I suddenly had to stop because I have seen this little one exactly where I was going to step on. There was another one which seemed to be dead (now I wonder if it was dead or just beginning to hibernate, but that spot didn't seem the right place to do it...)
.
I have tried to remove this one from the trail, but he kept coming back to the same place... then, I have put the two of them together, and it seemed to result. Obviously, he didn't want to be alone.
I don't know if this is a little mouse, or any other kind of rodent. It didn't show fear or any sign of agressivity and It was really, really small.

. . . Unless you actually get out in the field close to one of these birds, it's hard to appreciate how huge their wings really are!
One of these days I hope to be lucky enough to get a Snowy Owl flying towards me, otherwise, this bird butt shot will have to do.
