Above the Mason/Dixon line, most people would just snort at this much snow and not even bother to pull out the snow chains.
Say "blizzard" in the Deep South and it sends most southerners into near panic. Grocery stores are emptied of milk, bread and a few other staples before the weatherman is through talking. People are told, again and again, to stay home because the roads are slick and treacherous. Schools are cancelled, meetings are postponed, and, generally, mayhem rules.
Guess what, we survived!

The University of Saint Mary put visitors in the Christmas spirit with its annual elegant and traditional Christmas Choral Vespers Concert on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013.
The USM Christmas Vespers presentation is a tradition that dates back more than three decades. This year’s rendition featured the USM Concert Chorale under the direction of Dr. William Krusemark, chair of the fine arts department, and the Bells of Saint Mary Handbell Choir under the direction of USM Assistant Professor of Music Freda Proctor.
The principal work for the evening was Mozart’s Litanies of the Blessed Virgin, performed in honor of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which is celebrated on Dec. 8.
An assortment of carol arrangements followed, including modern settings by contemporary English composer John Rutter—The Donkey Carol, The Colors of Christmas, The Holly and The Ivy, and I Wish You Christmas.
USM Student soloists included Sarah DaMetz, of Lansing, Kan., Ashley Muldoon, of Bonner Springs, Kan., Emma Vavricek, of Basehor, Kan., and Katie Peterson, Amanda Jacobs, and Taylor Welch, all of Leavenworth, Kan.
A reception followed the event.

Spending only 10 minutes with each professor, similar to both the opening fair at a major research conference and undergraduate office hours, the students learned the latest research on general surgery from an Executive Director of Surgery at one of the largest health systems in the world, learn about being on the footsteps of curing brain cancer from a neurosurgeon, the latest physics on particles, whether quantum theory yields hints to our ability to age, and whether our world is nearing an apocalypse. It mirrors the rapid-fire format, diversity, and prestige of the kind of conference University Presidents and world leaders attend, yet forges a new path on collaboration, research accessibility, and special education – a new form of volunteerism at the University of California.
