The university was founded in 1734 by George II, King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover (a king or bishop entitled to help select a new Holy Roman Emperor upon the death of the previous emperor). The Hanoverian dynasty in Britain was established in 1714, after the death of Queen Anne, last of the Stuarts, by his father, George I, from the smaller Kingdom of Hanover, in what is now the northern German state of Lower Saxony. George II wanted to endow a university devoted to Enlightenment values. (A generation later, his son, George III, lost the American colonies, and after the death of Victoria, last of the Hanoverians, her son Edward VII renamed the British dynasty for his faher's royal lineage in Saxe-Coburg, in eastern Germany. During WWI, his successors retitled their lineage the House of Windsor, to remove the taint of Prussian militarism.)

This institution has been especially renowned for its science and math faculties, as well as its programs in law and history. Over 45 Nobel laureates have had affiliations with Gottingen, and its faculty or graduates include such luminaries as Max Born, Leo Szilard, Enrico Fermi, Wolfgang Pauli, Eugene Wigner, Max Planck, Werner Heisenberg, Robert Oppenheimer, Edward Teller, Friedrich Gauss, Bernhard Riemann, Hakaru Hashimoto, Max Delbruck, Heinrich Heine, J.P. Morgan, K. von Metternich, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Arthur Schopenhauer, Otto von Bismarck, and the brothers Grimm.
