On 1 May 1856, the Catholic University Church in Dublin, was solemnly blessed and opened. It was, in the words of its founder, Dr John Henry Newman (1801-1890), a “beautiful and imposing structure” which gave the University “a sort of bodily presence in Dublin”. It was built on the garden behind 87 St Stephen’s Green, next door to 86, now called Newman House, then known as the University House, seat of the new Catholic University.

Much has changed in the 150 years since that day. Though University Church is still there, the University to which it gave symbolic expression has moved on, transformed and translated into University College Dublin, on the Stillorgan Road.

The Robert Dobbs Fowler Sport and Fitness Center is the centerpiece of the institution’s athletic facilities, providing students with a modern fitness complex. Included in the new facility are a nine-lane indoor pool with separate diving well, an indoor four-lane 160-meter track with space for field events, and three multi-purpose courts and a batting cage. The Fowler Center project included extensive renovations to the existing Juhan Gymnasium, including a 1,000-seat basketball and volleyball performance gym, three racquetball courts and one squash court, training, weight, and locker rooms, dance studio, a fitness gym, classroom space, and three indoor tennis courts. Every year, students come from all over the world to pursue graduate and undergraduate programs at the University of Houston. What do they find when they get here?

Our students find more than 100 undergraduate majors and minors and nearly 200 graduate degree programs, including some that rank among the nation’s best. They find the opportunity to conduct world-class research with award-winning faculty, like Ioannis A. Kakadiaris, who’s working toward early detection of heart attack risk, and Kishore Mohanty, developer of a technology that brings “dead” oil wells back to life.

And they find a picturesque 550-acre campus in Houston, Texas, the energy capital of the world. In this international city, UH students find limitless opportunities to practice job skills, build professional networks, launch your career—and have a lot of fun.

UH graduates can be found in leadership positions from Capitol Hill to community nonprofits. Our alumni have done it all—from walking in space to leading major corporations to winning Olympic gold.

The University of Aarhus, which dates from 1931, is a unique and coherent university campus with consistent architecture, homogenous use of yellow brickwork and adaptation to the landscape. The university has won renown and praise as an integrated complex which unites the best aspects of functionalism with solid Danish traditions in form and materials.

The competition for the university was won by the architects Kay Fisker, C. F. Møller og Povl Stegmann in 1931. Stegman left the partnership in 1937, Fisker in 1942 and C. F. Møller Architects has been in charge of the continued architectural development and building design of the university until today.

The University of Aarhus, with its extensive park in central Aarhus, includes teaching rooms, offices, libraries, workshops and student accommodation. The university has a distinct homogeneous building style and utilises the natural contours of the landscape. The campus has emerged around a distinct moraine gorge and the buildings for the departments and faculties are placed on the slopes, from the main buildings alongside the ring road to the center of the city at Nørreport. All throughout the campus, the buildings are variations of the same clear-cut prismatic volume with pitched roofs, oriented orthogonally to form individual architectural clusters sharing the same vocabulary. The way the buildings emerge from the landscape makes them seem to grow from it, rather than being superimposed on the site.

The original scheme for the campus park was made by the famous Danish landscape architect C. Th. Sørensen. Until the death of C. Th. Sørensens in 1979 the development of the park areas were conducted in a close cooperation between C. Th. Sørensen, C. F. Møller and the local park authorities. Since 1979 C. F. Møller Architects - in cooperation with the staff at the university - has continued the intentions of the original scheme for the park, and today the park is a beautiful, green area and an immense contribution to both the university and the city in general.

In 2001, C. F. Møller Architects prepared a new masterplan for the long and short term development of the university. Although the university has been extended continuously for more than 75 years, the original masterplan and design principles have been maintained, and have proven a simple yet versatile tool to create a timeless and coherent architectural expression adaptable to changing programs. Today, the university is officially recognized as a Danish national architectural treasure and is internationally renowned as an excellent example of early modern university campus planning.

Royal Holloway, University of London (RHUL) is a constituent college of the University of London. The college has around 7,345 undergraduate and postgraduate students from over 120 different countries. The college's campus is located in Egham, Surrey, within the boundary of the Greater London Urban Area, although outside of the M25 motorway and some 20 miles (32 km) from the geographic centre of London.

The Egham campus was founded on the Mount Lee Estate in 1879 by the Victorian entrepreneur and philanthropist, Thomas Holloway as Holloway College. Royal Holloway College was a women-only institution, and was officially opened in 1886 by Queen Victoria. Royal Holloway College became a member of the University of London in 1900. In 1945, the College began admitting male postgraduate students, and in 1965, male undergraduates.[3] [4]In 1985, Royal Holloway College merged with Bedford College (another formerly all-women's college in London which was founded in 1849 and, like Royal Holloway College, joined the University of London in 1900 and became fully co-educational in 1965). The merged college was named Royal Holloway and Bedford New College (RHBNC), this remaining the official registered name of the College by Act of Parliament.

The campus is dominated by the magnificent red-brick Grade 1 listed Founder's Building, which is modelled on the Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley, France, a prominent landmark of stunning profile.

The College is currently made up of three faculties and 18 academic departments.

About the Library

Introduction

It is a fact that no institution or department can work efficiently and optimally until and unless its superiors and managers directly take an active and avid interest in its proper administration. Obviously, the Allama I. I. Kazi Central Library is no exception to this rule. We are indeed fortunate to have in the person of the present Vice Chancellor of the University of Sindh, Mr. Mazhar-ul-Haq Siddiqui, just such an administrator. He is an educationist and academician to the core and has taken upon his shoulders the daunting task of improving the lot of the Central and Seminar Libraries of the University of Sindh and bringing them up to par with the requirements and standards of the modern day library in this age of information technology.

He was also the founder of the Department of Library Science.

The construction of the present building housing the Library was started in 1970. Its foundation was laid by H.R.H, the Agha Khan Shah Karim. The Library become functional in 1975. This building is centrally located at a height commanding a grand view of the River Indus winding away down the meadows to join the sea. It is close proximity of the Teaching Faculties and is rectangular in shape symbolizing the shape of a book. It is a five story building consisting of 3 floors and 2 mezzanines (total 5 levels) having 48 carrels on the top floor. The building has been centrally air-conditions in 2002. and the sections no included in Central Air-Conditioning system have now been provided the Air-conditioning facility by installing 26 Window and (3) Split Air-Conditioners; all the library sections are now fully Air-conditioned.

HUNDREDS OF McGILL STUDENTS TAKE ON THE VOTE MOB CHALLENGE

(Montreal, QC) This afternoon, hundreds of students at McGill University converged on lower campus as part of the nationwide non-partisan “vote mob” movement. The “vote mob” was filmed to inspire youth across the country to vote for the issues they care about in this election. In the wake of the national leaders’ debates that included little discussion of issues concerning youth, the students’ message to politicians was clear: youth are informed and they are voting.

“Youth voter turnout has been historically quite low because political parties haven’t given Canada’s 3 million youth something to be excited about,” explains co-organizer Toby Davine, a student at McGill University. “This vote mob is a fun and creative way to express ourselves on our own terms through a medium youth can relate to: youtube.”

Over the past two weeks, “vote mob” videos have been filmed across Canadian campuses in a fun response to Rick Mercer’s March 29th Rant on low youth voter turnout. Ten videos have been filmed to date, with plans for another nine in place for the next two weeks. Over 350 students took part in today’s event.

“Young people across this country are hungry for a different type of politics. Today’s event at McGill University shows how committed we are as a generation to regenerating Canadian politics,” says Jamie Biggar, Executive Director with Leadnow.ca. “All across the country youth are mobilizing around this election, through fun video projects, protests and information tables.”

“3 million strong, our vote is pretty powerful but democracy and engagement do not end at the ballot box,” adds co-organizer and McGill student Amara Possian. “Getting out the vote is only the beginning.”

The “vote mob” video will be posted on youtube and on the TVMcGill website once as it has been edited.
