While the Northern Map Turtle has been designated a Species of Special Concern in Canada, it remains a common sight on our lake. Tonight I found this big female up on the grass, looking for a nest site.

A dark, cloudy morning presented some technical challenges, so it was extra handy that snappers are not sprinters. This one had spent the night laying her eggs. Most become breakfast for racoons and foxes almost as soon as they're in the ground, but enough eggs hatch for the species to survive.

Turtles are taking full advantage of the logs and rocks within the ponds of Cox Arboretum Metropark...almost pictured as much as Zipp.
Spent about 40 mins with this graceful fella (or laydee can't tell!) in the Maldives - really relaxed
Mowed over some more turtles this weekend (none injured). This one was passed over twice before he came crawling out.
