While the Northern Map Turtle has been designated a Species of Special Concern in Canada, it remains a common sight on our lake. Tonight I found this big female up on the grass, looking for a nest site.

A dark, cloudy morning presented some technical challenges, so it was extra handy that snappers are not sprinters. This one had spent the night laying her eggs. Most become breakfast for racoons and foxes almost as soon as they're in the ground, but enough eggs hatch for the species to survive.

Turtles are taking full advantage of the logs and rocks within the ponds of Cox Arboretum Metropark...almost pictured as much as Zipp.

Just swimming with a giant turtle

A pretty good photo of a turtle in the process of laying eggs.

Sights from a country drive on a sunny Sunday in Ontario. Mama turtle laying eggs on the side of the road.

She is more than 16 years old at least.

There are dozes of turtles living in the small pond at the train station. Kids (and adults) lined up to just watch them swimming around and relaxing on the rocks.

This picture was taken on Geist Reservoir in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2011.
