This little painted turtle was at least a half kilometre away from the nearest visible water. When i found him he was obstinately stuck inside his shell on the side of a logging road, refusing to poke his head out. At least it was all downhill back to the lake. There was also a leech stuck to the top of his shell, which was persistently still alive, even though i cant imagine how long this guy had been out of the water. How long does it take a turtle to cross a half km of cutover and climb a hill?
I spied this wonderful creature on my walk this morning. I was walking the golf course in reverse, approaching the third tee box, and there he was moving toward the pond. Getting this image and those that preceded it required stretching out flat on the tee box and easing forward. He retracted all four legs when he spotted me,but left his head out.
I was using the Panasonic camera which has minimal telephoto capabilities. He was amazingly patient with how close I got. I wonder. Had a stayed put, would he eventually have moved on despite my presence?
A presto!
P.s. Per qualche anticipazione romana, visitate Sinuhe, che già qualcuna l'ha sfornata!
June evening at Lake Maria State Park, MN. See a painted turtle in the grass and get out to get a few photos and expect it to run off like most painted turtles do, but it didn't. It was digging in the ground a hole and thought it was strange and then the first egg popped into the hole and watched her drop 8 eggs into the hole and then covered the hole and walked back to the lake.
Moving across the road and headed for the marsh water just 10 feet away...
Not sure which Painted Turtle it is-- Eastern, Midland, or Western...

This girl was one of three that was crossing the road. She was the only survivor by the time John saw her, stopped, and brought her to the safety of the ponds at home. She either already had laid, or was ready to lay, her eggs. She moved very, very fast. John put her in Pond 3.
"Move over!" He was actually yawning. Gotta love the borrowed 600mm! Taken from the blind at Mass Audubon's Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary in Marshfield.
The turtle came up from the water and laid its eggs in the grass near some bushes at the Royal Botanical Gardens.
This is our turtle Crush Red. The light was coming in the window and hitting his tank so beautifully... I wasn't able to capture exactly what I was seeing lots of shots with the reflection on the glass.
Before having a turtle I wouldn't have thought they had much personality, but oddly enough they do. Very friendly and curious.
10 years later after saving the world from the hands of Shredder I found Michael Angelo at Al Areen park. Small world ;-P
A beautiful softshell turtle in the Cascades. We have only seen them in the pond. A real treat to see one on dry land.
