On Saturday 11 November, between 300,000 and 800,000 protesters marched from London's Hyde Park to the US Embassy in solidarity with Palestinians. Britain's Home Secretary Suella Braverman had insisted a few days earlier that all those marching to call for a ceasefire, compassion and justice were hate marchers and she pressured the police to ban it. Fortunately, common sense and the law prevailed, and the march was allowed to go ahead.

It was not just a reaction to the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, the escalating death toll and the blockade of essential supplies to the 2.3 million Palestinians living in the city and the surrounding strip.

It was also a determination to see an end to -

1) An end to Palestinian suffering from 75 years of Israeli occupation. The Israeli occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip since 1967 is officially recognised by the United Nations and most of the world despite the fact that the occupation is often ignored or sometimes even denied by Western media. As Amnesty International reports Israeli occupation has resulted in "systematic human rights violations against Palestinians living there."

www.amnesty.org/en/latest/campaigns/2017/06/israel-occupa...

2) An end to Palestinians living under a highly restrictive Apartheid regime as recognised by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and War on Want. Across the West Bank Palestinians are banned from driving on numerous roads that cross the region and as War on Want explains "Jewish Israelis and Palestinians are treated differently in almost every aspect of life: housing, education, health, employment, family life, residence and freedom of movement. Dozens of Israeli laws and policies institutionalise this prevailing system of racial discrimination and domination."

3) An end to restrictions on movement. Across the West Bank there are some 650 Israeli military checkpoints through which only some Palestinians are allowed to pass, often with humiliating questioning and delays, so that they can travel to other towns whether to visit families, seeking medical treatment or for any other reason. In Gaza, travel is even more difficult and only a tiny minority with work permits have been allowed to cross the border - the rest have to remain in what is often described as the world's largest open air prison - the densely populated Gaza strip housing some 2.3 million people.

3) An end to the 16 years of siege imposed by Israel on Gaza which means that around 56% of children were suffering from anemia and only 4% had access to safe drinking water even before the outbreak of conflict this month.

4) The never ending process of Israeli expansion across Palestinian land, including the demolition of 55,000 Palestinian homes since 1967, occurring on a near monthly basis as well as the cutting down of fields of olive trees and the ploughing up of Palestinian farms to make room for yet more illegal settlements subsidised by the Israeli government.

These settlements are illegal under international law, which rightly recognises the 1967 border. However, since 1967, Israel has constructed 250 of them across the West Bank in which over 633,000 Israelis live in subsidised and often luxurious housing with swimming pools and manicured lawns, an unimaginable privilege to the vast majority of Palestinians.

5) Never ending acts of settler terrorism against Palestinians. Western media rightly condemns occasional Palestinian attacks on Israeli civilians, including the appalling atrocities committed by Hamas on 7 October. However, for years illegal Israeli settlers in the West Bank have staged attacks against Palestinians, sometimes motivated sheerly by hatred, but often by the desire to inflict terror and to ethnically cleanse an area. The most recent incident was an attack on Wednesday 11 October in which masked settlers killed three Palestinian villagers and then killed a Palestinian father and son attending the funeral the next day.

6) The division of Palestinian land by the separation wall. The 708 km Separation Wall, completed in 2005, was supposedly built to protect Israel from any Palestinians that might be able to enter the country without permission, but 85% of it runs up to 18 km inside the internationally recognised 1967 boundary ("Green Line"), frequently dividing Palestinians villagers from their farmland as well as running through the middle of farms and dividing arable land from key water supplies.

Some 10% of the West Bank now lies between the wall and the 1967 border, an area into which everyone, except Palestinians, is allowed entry. Not surprisingly, the International Court of Justice has issued an advisory opinion that the separation wall is a contravention of international law and in 2003 the UN General Assembly passed a resolution demanding its removal by 144 votes to just 4. Analysts also fear that the wall acts as a de facto annexation of all the Palestinian land that lies to the west of it.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_West_Bank_barrier

7) The myth of Palestinian rejectionism. Western mainstream media usually maintains falsely that it is Palestinians that have constantly rejected a two-state solution, whereas the opposite is the case. Arab states and the Palestinians have frequently made clear their willingness to negotiate a future two-state solution on the basis of the 1967 frontiers, while Israel is committed to preventing any such solution and continuing its territorial expansion.

As early as 1976, Egypt, Syria and Jordan presented a two-state solution resolution to the UN Security Council based on the 1967 Green Line (in accordance with the international consensus) but it was vetoed outright by the United States, even though Washington at the time publicly acknowledged the illegality of all Israeli settlements across the Palestinian West Bank.

The same happened again in 1980.

Later in 1988, the PLO put forward their position in a declaration by the Palestinian National Council calling for a Palestinian state alongside Israel with guarantees of security to both countries. However in May 1989, Israel's Likud-Labour coalition government made it crystal clear that they would not accept an "additional" Palestinian state between Jordan and Israel, regardless of what Jordanians, Palestinians or the rest of the world might think. The founding charter of Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party still "flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan river."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Likud

8) The frequent killing by Israeli security forces of peaceful protesters, women, children, journalists and medics, including the assassination of renowned Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh in May last year. In the nine months of 2023 prior to 7 October, 248 Palestinians, 40 of them children, had been killed by Israeli soldiers, but these deaths attracted almost no attention in the Western media. Palestinian lives have always been very cheap.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMIZTiN-TrE

9) The current refusal of Israel to allow any journalists into the Gaza Strip so they can see and report on, obviously at their own risk, the destruction and casualties and suffering of the civilian population.

10) An end to "administrative detentions" across the West Bank under which thousands of Palestinians have been detained without any right to be told under what charges they are being held, let alone any right to a free trial. As the Israeli human rights organisation B'Tselem explains

"Administrative detention is incarceration without trial or charge, alleging that a person plans to commit a future offense. It has no time limit, and the evidence on which it is based is not disclosed. Israel employs this measure extensively and routinely, and has used it to hold thousands of Palestinians for lengthy periods of time. While detention orders are formally reviewed, this is merely a semblance of judicial oversight, as detainees cannot reasonably mount a defense against undisclosed allegations. Nevertheless, courts uphold the vast majority of orders."

www.btselem.org/topic/administrative_detention

11) An end to Israeli soldiers controlling access to and frequently preventing Muslims from visiting the Al Aqsa Mosque in Israeli occupied East Jerusalem [Al Quds], considered the third holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina. On several occasions, Israeli troops and/or police have also attacked worshippers using batons, stun grenades and tear gas, igniting understandable anger across the Islamic World. Radical Israeli settlers also sometimes enter under the protection of Israeli security forces and some also perform Jewish rituals in contravention of current agreements about non-Muslims being allowed in, but only as visitors.

I have several different betta fish that I have collected over the past two years and some of them really have some incredible coloration. I decided to try and figure out a way to somehow capture some of that beauty.

The set up was basically a two and a half gallon(9.5L), flat front fish tank. I placed a white board angled and facing upwards slightly and then bounced the flash off the ceiling.

It was a little difficult to try and get the macro shots with a fish swimming around with their jittery motions, as well as moving from the front to the back of the aquarium. I found that the best time to take the shot was when they were at the top taking gulps of air, or when I would drop a few pieces of food in for them. I would try and avoid feeding them too much though as it could cloud the water or add particles. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out.

I have been focused on working on this game, an RPG mainly focused on puzzles rather than fighting, called Trials and Tribulations, but the title is still not 100% confirmed.

This is a little bit of the introduction scene, where Emilia, the main character's wife returns home with him.

I'll provide a download link to the for anyone who's interested soon after I finish.

I am almost done with this short adventure I made for the Indie Game Maker Contest.

And most likely will serve as a prequel for a bigger game, in time.

CN’s trial Prairie States local (L544) pulls limestone empties from the Praire States power plant near Lively Grove, IL to interchange with the Kaskaskia Port railroad at Lenzburg. The local was created due to the L548 local crew regularly timing out returning to STL after swapping with L546 at New Athens. L546 work of picking up empties and/or fly ash, running up to Lenzburg to set out and returning with limestone loads seemed to be a bit much. This is the second week of the trial run of L544. Thanks to MH for the info on this new move. Two SD70s lead today's consist, IC deathstar #1028 and CN (IC) #1037.

Site of the Hog Trial in the Hatfield-McCoy feud.

Three historical markers at the site read:

"McCoy Cemetery. Among the graves in the McCoy Cemetery are those of Randolph McCoy's three sons -- Tolbert, Pharmer, and Randolph Jr. -- all killed by the Hatfields. Also buried here are Alifair and Calvin McCoy, who were killed by the Hatfields when cabin was burned. Cemetery is part of the Hatfield-McCoy Feud Historical District."

"Hog Trial. In 1873 Randolph McCoy accused Floyd Hatfield of stealing his hog. A trial followed, presided over by Reverend Anderson Hatfield, justice of the peace. To be fair, the jury consisted of six Hatfields and six McCoys. One witness, William Staton, stated he had seen Floyd mark the hog's ear. This resulted in Floyd's acquittal."

"Hog Trial Site. In the fall of 1878, Randolph McCoy brought charges against Floyd Hatfield for stealing one of his hogs. The resulting trial occurred here and was presided over by the local justice of the peace, Preacher Anderson Hatfield. Preacher Anderson was Devil Anse Hatfield's cousin and did not want to appear biased so he gathered a jury of six Hatfields and six McCoys to hear the case. When the jury reached a verdict, Selkirk McCoy, nephew of Sarah McCoy and a veteran of the Virginia Confederacy, sided with the six Hatfields in favor of Floyd. The McCoys felt betrayed and open hostilities soon erupted between the Hatfield and McCoy families. Later Bill Staton, who testified in favor of his brother-in-law Floyd Hatfield was killed by two of Randolph McCoys nephews while he was hunting. They were tried and acquitted in a trial presided over by Valentine Hatfield, uncle of Devil Anse. After this, violence between the families continued and the resulting conflict eventually escalated into the most famous feud in American history."

Trial Bocairent. Campeonato de España

A field test of vintage and vintage-styled equipment for an upcoming "expedition" planned for the summer.

A mere two-mile walk revealed a number of issues:

1. Old canvas may be fragile and prone to tearing, even if it appears sound to visual inspection. The straps tore out of the old No. 573 haversack (backpack) at both the top and bottom connecting points even though I carried nothing in the pack other than an empty cardboard box to give it some volume.

2. They don't make 'em like they used to: a new leather whip holder (from Todd's Costumes) -- essentially a band of leather secured into a loop by a metal rivet -- failed when the metal rivet snapped.

3. Break-in of new boots will take time. This was expected. I am not accustomed to wearing tall boots. Some experimentation with the tightness of the lacing and sock thickness is called for. After less than a mile I became aware of chafing around the heel. After two miles I ended up with blisters on the backs of both heels. The heel chafing seems to afflict me any time I wear new shoes for the first time. My current running shoes, for example, caused me considerable discomfort when new, but now I have no problem with them.

4. Big boots are heavy! Hiking in knee-high boots, long trousers, and a heavy poplin shirt while carrying a backpack and satchel differs considerably from jogging in shorts, t-shirt, and sneakers. I got tired -- winded -- much more quickly than I would have anticipated. What a wimp! Regular running will not adequately address the fitness requirements for a "full gear" hike. Continuing full gear practice hikes are an obvious necessity if I am to complete the upcoming adventure as planned.

5. My pants are worn out! While the Willis & Geiger bush poplin safari shirt will likely last forever, my inexpensive, lightweight cargo pants were worn thin in spots, and by the end of my trek I had managed to tear a large hole in the backside. Between the backpack, the whip holder, and my trousers, I managed to destroy three pieces of gear in the course of a 45-minute, two-mile hike! But that's why I intend to complete a number of these practice hikes: to find out what works, what doesn't, and what I need to repair, replace, or approach differently.

6. Not all observations are negative. For instance, "working epaulettes" as the shoulder straps on the bush poplin safari shirt were described in the old Willis & Geiger catalogs, made a significant difference in the comfort of carrying a backpack. I had no problem with pack straps sliding off my shoulders. On the rare occasions that I carry a backpack, this issue annoys me to such an extent that I swear that I will never carry a backpack again if I can help it. Securing the pack straps under the button-down flaps on the shirt completely eliminated the shifting straps problem.

7. Pith helmet for the win! I wore this Wolseley-style pith helmet when I hiked across the Grand Canyon in 2009. The hat is so lightweight and fits so naturally and comfortably that I often forgot I was wearing it during that hike, and I was pleasantly reminded of that again today.

8. While heavy, and definitely requiring some getting accustomed to, the tall, leather Thorogood boots were less clumsy than I feared they might be and seemed to provide a sure grip and good balance on uneven ground... at least until my legs got so tired I could barely lift my feet. As my strength increases, I think these "work boots" will serve adequately as rough-terrain hiking footwear... at least when "old school aesthetics" are desired.

20 April 2013

Great weather and a turnout of 47 riders for the Cust Re-Union Classic Trial held in April each year in Canterbury, New Zealand, near the old Cust racing circuit. Thanks Brian and Dave for the excellent sections (4 laps of 8 sections), Peter for the perfectly cooked sausages, and Trevor and Christine for sorting out scores and this years trophy winners. There were plenty of trophies and certificates with Pre-65, twin shock, and air cooled mono

each offering 3 lines. Thanks for another great day of classic trials in Canterbury.

Starboard stern quarter view of ‘Nicola’ on sea trials, 13 February 1968 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/52228D). She was launched at the Southwick shipyard of Austin & Pickersgill, Sunderland, 29 December 1967

This set celebrates the ‘Nicola’, the first in a long line of standard ships designed by the Sunderland shipyard of Austin & Pickersgill Ltd. The images document her construction from October 1967 through to her completion in February 1968. The shipbuilders commissioned the Newcastle-based firm Turners (Photography) Ltd to take weekly progress shots of the ‘Nicola’ and these images have given us a unique view of her development.

She was the first SD14 to be completed (the name stands for ‘Shelter Deck 14,000 tons deadweight’) and was designed as a replacement for the surviving ‘Liberty ships’, built by American yards during the Second World War. Those Liberty ships had played a vital role in the Allied victory but by the 1960s they were fast approaching the end of their working lives.

The SD14 developed by Austin & Pickersgill met the demand for economic and reliable cargo ships. The simplicity of the design meant that it could be marketed by the shipbuilders at a very competitive price. It’s success is reflected by the fact that over the course of 20 years 211 ships were built to the SD14 design by Austin Pickersgill and its licensees. Sunderland can be very proud of its remarkable shipbuilding and engineering history and the SD14 is one the City’s finest achievements.

Cedar, glass, wire

Created in response to an adverse political climate, this sculpture aptly speaks to the opposing views that have engulfed our nation’s daily dialogue. Its “seeing eye” evokes the concepts of god, governance, and the Eye of Providence (the all-seeing eye found on the United States one-dollar bill).

In this commentary on society and government Larimore juxtaposes the rational grid of the wire glass with a cedar tree that represents nature and its unknown, uncontrolled course.

Probably a Gold Star 350cc Trials machine.

Another great autumn day in Canterbury, New Zealand, saw 33 riders on a range of Classic Trials machines head to Loburn to ride four rounds of nine great sections. The sections included climbs, logs, creeks and banks which claimed a few points off most of us, though some excellent rides saw a couple of rider finish the 36 sections with 35 cleans. Thanks to Peter for the BBQ, Travis for use of his property, and also to those who put in the sections. The Classic group has a couple of regular competitors who travel some distance to ride with us. They are now joined by Alistair who traveled from Dunedin to ride, and from the results had a good day. Enjoy the photos.

After the February trial was washed out due to rain, it was great to have a warm sunny day for our March Classic Trial in Canterbury, New Zealand. The event was rewarded with 29 riders attending on a range of classic and modern machines. Straightforward sections with just a couple of sections in the trees responsible for my points. Thanks Travis for letting us use your property. Great to see Trevor joining pre-65 on his BSA for the first time.
