Step into the vibrant heart of Tokyo's Asakusa district with the Kaminarimon Gate, the grand entrance to Senso-ji, the city's oldest and most significant Buddhist temple. This stunning landmark, ablaze with red and gold hues, stands as a testament to Japan's enduring cultural and architectural heritage. Originally constructed in 942, the gate has been rebuilt multiple times, with the current structure dating back to 1960.

Dominating the gate is the immense chochin, a red paper lantern dramatically inscribed with the characters for “thunder gate,” signifying protection and power. Flanking the lantern are fierce guardian statues: Fujin, the god of wind, and Raijin, the god of thunder. These figures are said to ward off evil spirits, a theme resonant throughout the temple's history. The lantern itself is a marvel, towering over visitors and creating a striking photo opportunity day and night.

Pass through Kaminarimon, and you're greeted by the lively Nakamise Street, a bustling corridor lined with traditional shops offering everything from handmade crafts to local street food delicacies. Beyond lies the grand Senso-ji Temple, but the gate alone captivates with its imposing presence and intricate details.

Whether illuminated under the night sky or bathed in the glow of sunrise, Kaminarimon is a sight to behold. This gateway serves as an enduring symbol of Tokyo’s spiritual and architectural legacy, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and first-time visitors alike. Pro tip: Visit after dark for a magical view, with fewer crowds and the gate’s intricate carvings beautifully highlighted.

Place du Palais-Royal, Paris. "Facing the Louvre ticket windows, the square is flanked by the Council of State, whose main façade by Moreau-Desproux is decorated with trophies of arms and allegorical figures carved by Pajou, and by the Louvre des Antiquaires (a luxury shopping centre due to open in 2020), and the façade of the Hôtel du Louvre, where Pissarro set up to paint the square below and the Avenue de l'Opéra." travelguide.michelin.com/europe/france/ile-de-france/pari...

The city’s most unusual market lies along Calles Jiménez and Linares between Sagárnaga and Av Mariscal Santa Cruz, amid lively tourist artesanías (stores selling locally handcrafted items). What is on sale isn’t witchcraft as depicted in horror films; the merchandise is herbal and folk remedies, plus a few more unorthodox ingredients intended to supplicate the various spirits of the Aymará world.

Here you'll find ingredients like dried toucan beaks, intended to cure ills and protect supplicants from bad spirits. If you’re building a new house you can buy a llama fetus to bury beneath the cornerstone as a cha’lla (offering) to Pachamama (Mother Earth). If you're feeling ill or being pestered by bothersome spooks, you can purchase a plateful of colorful herbs, seeds and assorted critter parts to remedy the problem. As you pass the market stalls, watch for wandering yatiris (traditional healers), who wear dark hats and carry coca pouches, and offer (mainly to locals) fortune-telling services.

The lighthouse at Malarrif, Snæfellsnes, W-Iceland.

The light was so beautiful there that I totally ignored the fact that Lóndrangar were only a few minutes walk away.

And it had finally started to rain, or so I thought...

The classic joke for the tourist being: Just wait a few minutes and the weather will change rang more true than ever. The drops just showed up on the windshield of the car in a rush to a destination far off.

For the whole trip there were signs pointing to a mountain slope, stating that this and that waterfall was there, but nowhere a drop of water to be seen.

But Malarrifsviti lighthouse stood there so white and pristine out of the middle of nowhere (literally) and made me think of this quote from Dan Millman:

Faith means living with uncertainty - feeling your way through life, letting your heart guide you like a lantern in the dark

The Weather report having been especially uncertain so far this summer, promising the rain that never came, promising just about what can be invested in a thing called forecast, or as in Iceland; we call it the weather fortune telling, with forecast and fortune telling being the same word in Icelandic.

Look into my crystal ball....there will be sunshine........

-or something along those lines.

Denkpartner (Il Pensatore)

According to local guides, Valley de Luna received its name after Neil Armstrong apparently visited the site and remarked how the landscape resembled that of the moon. The jury’s still out as to whether this is fact or fiction!
