Cancun, Mexico

While climate change has been causing some extremely high temperatures across much of the Northern Hemisphere, it seems to be causing an extra foggy (and slightly cooler) summer for us here in San Francisco. This last week I was trying to capture the fog in a few places around San Francisco and the Bay Area. Saturday I went up to Mount Tamalpais, across the Golden Gate, to catch it sinking into the heavily wooded valleys from a vantage point above it. I tried to make a bunch of long exposures, but something funky happed with my neutral density filter, so most of them are unusable. I salvaged a couple and have some photos that I captured at normal (fast) speed. Enjoy!

Kunming Lake (昆明湖) forms the centre of the Summer Palace gardens in Beijing, China. In fact, the lake takes up most of the parks area, covering 2.2 square kilometres or three quarters of the garden grounds. The lake is relativly shallow, with a depth of just 1.5 mtres. The lake is largely man made though a small pond existed on the site before development. The lake was created by Guo Shoujing, originally as a reservoir for the nearby capital, during the Yuan dynasty (1291). The area was converted into the imperial garden between 1750 and 1764, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. Work was undertaken to expand the existing lake at that time. The spoil from excavating the lake was used to form the nearby Longevity Hill. The lake develops a thick lair of ice during the winter, during which time it can be used for skating. In the summer, a large number of small boats cover the lake.

This eclectic edifice was built between 1856 and 1860 according to the wishes of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg (later to become Emperor of Mexico), and planned by Carl Junker. The interior furniture and decorations are genuine period pieces. The extensive park (22 hectares) is located on the seashore and was designed by the Archduke. The cliff it was built on, which had no vegetation whatsoever at the time, was cultivated with numerous tropical species of trees and plants.

AVisitors to the castle will be able to see the following: Maximilian's chambers and those of his consort, Carlota of Belgium; the guest rooms; the information room telling the history of the Castle and the Park's construction; the Duke Amadeo of Aosta's apartment with furnishings from the 1930's in the Rationalist style. All the rooms still feature the original furnishings, ornaments, furniture and objects dating back to the middle of the 19th century. Particularly noteworthy are the music room where Carlota used to play the fortepiano, now on show in room VII. In room XIX there are a series of paintings by Cesare dell'Acqua depicting the history of Miramare. Lastly, visitors may visit the throne room, which was recently restored and brought back to its former splendour.

parterreThe park offers the public a chance for an interesting stroll among botanical species and an important collection of sculptures dotted along its numerous paths. A visit should also be paid to the Stables, a building which was recently restored and is now used for temporary exhibitions; the Old Greenhouses and the Little Castle, with its original decoration on the first floor, are also well worth a visit.

For a number of years now, in the back of my mind, I’ve had a desire to visit the Point Bonita Lighthouse. This is a lighthouse that is directly across from San Francisco in the north bay, specifically the Marin Headlands, sitting on a big rock jutting out from a cliff. I’ve seen a number of nice photos of it but never visited because the hours that it is open are quite unusual (at the moment it is only open Sundays and Mondays for 3 hours each afternoon). Since I am still on the job hunt, and thus had Monday afternoon free, I decided it was the perfect opportunity. The sun was very strong that afternoon, and, unfortunately, directly behind the lighthouse, so I had to do some bracketing so I could stack up these HDR shots for you. The views in every direction were pretty spectacular.

For more information about the Great Wall of China and Beijing, please visit my website: www.abookaboutchina.com/location/Great-Wall-China

The Great Wall of China is by and far the most famous tourist attraction in the country. The Chinese call it Changchen (长城) which literally translates as the Long Wall. It is sometimes refered to as the Wanli Changchen (萬里長城) or Ten-thousand Li Wall (a 'Li' is a Chinese mile or about 500 metres) which incidentally is almost right. The true length of the wall is 6,259.6 km (Which is a very precise number I got off of wikipedia - but I'm not going to measure wall and argue with them.) The wall was first built over 2,500 years ago during the Warring states period. It wasn't then so much of one wall, rather many bits of wall. When the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Wandi, unified the country, about 2,200 years ago, he joined the sections of wall together to make one single defensive line. The wall of that era, however, looked nothing like the wall we have today. The Qin wall was made of rammed earth mixed with straw and glutinous rice. The Qin wall soon fell into disuse and disrepair. For most of China's history, there was no wall. When the Ming dynasty was founded, they wanted a strong northern defence against the nomadic tribes to the north. So they rebuilt the wall. This time in stone. The wall that tourists go to see today in Beijing, it the Ming dynasty wall. Sections of the wall have been restored and are open as tourist locations. The biggest of these sections, and the most visited is the Badaling Great Wall which is photographed here.

Continuing on from my last set of shared photos, here are some black and white (and one digital color) shots from Battery Mendell, in the Marin Headlands, just across the Golden Gate Bridge. These include a view of the Point Bonita Light House (with San Francisco in the background), as well as a view of the Pacific coast line and Rodeo Beach.

The Tuileries Garden is a public garden located between the Louvre Museum and the Place de la Concorde in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. Created by Catherine de Medicis as the garden of the Tuileries Palace in 1564, it was eventually opened to the public in 1667, and became a public park after the French Revolution. In the 19th and 20th century, it was the place where Parisians celebrated, met, promenaded, and relaxed.

One year ago, today, I landed in Sydney, Australia after a 14 hour flight that somehow landed 2 days later… The International Date Line is weird. It would be the start of 3 weeks traveling around the eastern coast of Australia, with opportunities to visit some Aussies that I had recently met traveling around Europe, as well as scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef. I started in Sydney mostly out of convenience (i.e. international flights). I only had 2 nights so I didn’t get to see a whole lot, but what I saw was very nice. I walked around the city and harbor a bunch, as well as checked out Bondi Beach. Here is a shot taken from the Royal Botanic Garden of a couple well known elements of the Sydney skyline: the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Did you know that Sydney Harbour is the world’s largest natural harbor?
