The Abbey of Saint Gall is a Roman Catholic religious complex in the city of St. Gallen in Switzerland. The Carolingian-era Abbey has existed since 719 and became an independent principality during the 13th century, and was for many centuries one of the chief Benedictine abbeys in Europe. It was founded by Saint Othmar on the spot where Saint Gall had erected his hermitage. The library at the Abbey is one of the richest medieval libraries in the world. Since 1983 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Amalia was never the brightest student in school - at least when grades were concerned. She hated math and things that made too much sense. She was smart alright, but she didn't study much and she didn't really read the books that she was supposed to read.

But she loved geography.

When she wanted something, like going on a school trip or getting a bike, her mom, then, made her learn a whole continent - country and capital - and if she did, she would get what she wanted.

She grew up and became a travel nerd. She collects maps, atlases, travel guides and now she can tell *most* world capitals and flags by heart (thanks to her mom).

Travelling, other countries, languages and cultures are some of her favourite things, along with dolls, TV and photography.

PS: She does read other stuff now, specially fiction, and she knows that travel guides are not exactly literature, but who's judging? :)

(as you may've imagined, yes, I am talking about myself!)

This eclectic edifice was built between 1856 and 1860 according to the wishes of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg (later to become Emperor of Mexico), and planned by Carl Junker. The interior furniture and decorations are genuine period pieces. The extensive park (22 hectares) is located on the seashore and was designed by the Archduke. The cliff it was built on, which had no vegetation whatsoever at the time, was cultivated with numerous tropical species of trees and plants.

AVisitors to the castle will be able to see the following: Maximilian's chambers and those of his consort, Carlota of Belgium; the guest rooms; the information room telling the history of the Castle and the Park's construction; the Duke Amadeo of Aosta's apartment with furnishings from the 1930's in the Rationalist style. All the rooms still feature the original furnishings, ornaments, furniture and objects dating back to the middle of the 19th century. Particularly noteworthy are the music room where Carlota used to play the fortepiano, now on show in room VII. In room XIX there are a series of paintings by Cesare dell'Acqua depicting the history of Miramare. Lastly, visitors may visit the throne room, which was recently restored and brought back to its former splendour.

parterreThe park offers the public a chance for an interesting stroll among botanical species and an important collection of sculptures dotted along its numerous paths. A visit should also be paid to the Stables, a building which was recently restored and is now used for temporary exhibitions; the Old Greenhouses and the Little Castle, with its original decoration on the first floor, are also well worth a visit.

This massive building is Congress Hall on the Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg, Germany. You’ve undoubtedly seen images from Zeppelin Field where they held the main events and speeches. Congress Hall was never completed the way Hitler had envisioned, but what was completed still remains and has taken on a different purpose. One part of it now is the Documentation Center of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds which contains an exhibit that takes a critical look at all the factors that lead to the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party, to help ensure it never happens again. After last week’s events in the U.S., culminating in domestic terrorists forcing their way into the U.S. Capitol building, I hope that when the history books are written, they are not a watered-down, or veneered version of the events and causes, unlike what happened to Civil War history. Perhaps instead of the usual presidential library that would be built after a presidential term has concluded, a museum, similar to the one in Nuremberg’s Congress Hall, could be built to ensure another administration like the current one never exists, again.

As promised, here are some black and white photographs I took earlier this summer while visiting Michigan. A long-time friend of mine, who also likes to take photos, and who happens to be an architect and artist, threw out the idea that while I was visiting we should go down to Detroit and shoot a bit. So, her, her partner (another long-time friend of mine), and I headed down to the Dequindre Cut Greenway and to Eastern Market in Detroit one hot summer afternoon. Detroit has an interesting and unfortunate history which has left huge parts of it dilapidated. This is often the focus of street and architecture photographers when shooting in Detroit. This is commonly referred to as ruin-porn. I ended up leaning in to this a bit with these photos, as you can tell, although I had some reservations in doing so. I do, however, see beauty in many of these things, and it always makes me wonder what these things were like when shiny and new. At this point there are pockets of people and new developments scattered around the city, but it has a long way to go and will probably never return to its former glory, unfortunately.

Read my blog on Lisbon.

Baixa area covers about 235,620 square metres of central Lisbon, Portugal. It comprises the grid of streets north of the Praça do Comércio, roughly between the Cais do Sodré and the Alfama district beneath the Lisbon Castle, and extends northwards towards the Rossio and Figueira squares and the Avenida da Liberdade, a tree-lined boulevard noted for its tailoring shops and cafes.

Back in June, after they had finally reopened the parking at the East Beach, near Crissy Field, here in San Francisco, and I had grown very tired of not venturing much further than walking distance around my apartment, I decided to head to a few of my favorite spots in town (that are all next to each other), the East Beach, the Wave Organ, and the Palace of Fine Arts. I brought a roll of black and white Ilford HP5 film with me. I had gotten several varieties of film to test out when I first started using 35mm film and was trying to burn through the ones I didn’t like as much, which included the HP5. I wasn’t very confident that I’d get many good photos that day, anyway, so it was a good opportunity to use it. It was a good decision since I’m only really happy with a few of the shots taken around the Palace of Fine Arts. Here are a few of an always excellent architectural subject.
