For more information about the Great Wall of China and Beijing, please visit my website: www.abookaboutchina.com/location/Great-Wall-China
The Great Wall of China is by and far the most famous tourist attraction in the country. The Chinese call it Changchen (长城) which literally translates as the Long Wall. It is sometimes refered to as the Wanli Changchen (萬里長城) or Ten-thousand Li Wall (a 'Li' is a Chinese mile or about 500 metres) which incidentally is almost right. The true length of the wall is 6,259.6 km (Which is a very precise number I got off of wikipedia - but I'm not going to measure wall and argue with them.) The wall was first built over 2,500 years ago during the Warring states period. It wasn't then so much of one wall, rather many bits of wall. When the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Wandi, unified the country, about 2,200 years ago, he joined the sections of wall together to make one single defensive line. The wall of that era, however, looked nothing like the wall we have today. The Qin wall was made of rammed earth mixed with straw and glutinous rice. The Qin wall soon fell into disuse and disrepair. For most of China's history, there was no wall. When the Ming dynasty was founded, they wanted a strong northern defence against the nomadic tribes to the north. So they rebuilt the wall. This time in stone. The wall that tourists go to see today in Beijing, it the Ming dynasty wall. Sections of the wall have been restored and are open as tourist locations. The biggest of these sections, and the most visited is the Badaling Great Wall which is photographed here.

More information about The Marble Boat and the Summer Palace in Beijing can be found at my website: www.abookaboutchina.com/location/Summer-Palace
The Marble Boat ( 石舫), also known as the Boat of Purity and Ease (Qing Yan Fǎng) is a lakeside pavilion on the grounds of the Summer Palace in Beijing, China. It was first erected in 1755 during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor. The original pavilion was made from a base of large stone blocks which supported a wooden superstructure done in a traditional Chinese design.
In 1860, during the Second Opium War, the pavilion was destroyed by Anglo-French forces. It was restored in 1893 on order of the Empress Dowager Cixi. In this restoration, a new two-story superstructure was designed which incorporated elements of European architecture. Like its predecessor, the new superstructure is made out of wood but it was painted to imitate marble. On each "deck", there is a large mirror to reflect the waters of the lake and give an impression of total immersion in the aquatic environment. Imitation paddlewheels on each side of the pavilion makes it look like a paddle steamer. The pavilion has a sophisticated drainage system which channels rain water through four hollow pillars. The water is finally released into the lake through the mouths of four dragon heads.
The boat design of the pavilion may relate to a quote attributed to Wei Zheng, a chancellor of the Tang Dynasty renown for his honest advice. He is said to have told the emperor "the waters that float the boat can also swallow it", implying that the people can support the emperor but can also topple him. With this in mind, Emperor Qianlong might have chosen to construct the Marble Boat on a solid stone base to indicate that the Qing Dynasty was not to be overthrown.
The Marble Boat is often seen as an ironic commentary on the fact that the money used to restore the Summer Palace largely came from funds originally earmarked for building up a new imperial navy. The controller of the Admiralty, the 1st Prince Chun, owed much of his social standing as well as his appointment to the Empress Dowager, who had adopted his oldest son to become the Guangxu Emperor. Because of this, he probably saw no other choice than to condone the embezzlement.
The pavilion is 36 meters long. It stands on the northwestern shore of Kunming Lake, near the western end of the Long Corridor.
More information about Marble Boat and the Summer Palace in Beijing can be found at my website: www.abookaboutchina.com/location/Summer-Palace
Turaida Castle, a red brick archbishops' castle founded in 1214 on the site of a Liv stronghold. It was blown up when lightning hit its gunpowder store in the 18th century. The restored castle is better viewed from afar, but a museum in the 15th-century granary offers an interesting account of the Livonian state from 1319 to 1561.

Nahan is famous for the local traditions and recently I got a chance to watch the 43rd Annual Hajrat Lakhdata Peer Sahib Dangal which took place at the dangal ground adjacent to the Lakhdata Peer Nahan. There were 50 participants from Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, UP and Delhi, who took part in the famous dangal and the final fight was between Kashmiri from Himachal Police team and Sukhwinder Singh who came from Merrut.
