As promised, here are some black and white photographs I took earlier this summer while visiting Michigan. A long-time friend of mine, who also likes to take photos, and who happens to be an architect and artist, threw out the idea that while I was visiting we should go down to Detroit and shoot a bit. So, her, her partner (another long-time friend of mine), and I headed down to the Dequindre Cut Greenway and to Eastern Market in Detroit one hot summer afternoon. Detroit has an interesting and unfortunate history which has left huge parts of it dilapidated. This is often the focus of street and architecture photographers when shooting in Detroit. This is commonly referred to as ruin-porn. I ended up leaning in to this a bit with these photos, as you can tell, although I had some reservations in doing so. I do, however, see beauty in many of these things, and it always makes me wonder what these things were like when shiny and new. At this point there are pockets of people and new developments scattered around the city, but it has a long way to go and will probably never return to its former glory, unfortunately.
The Bali Starling, Bali’s regional mascot, is critically endangered, hovering immediately above extinction in the wild for several years now (BirdLife International 2006). The Bali Starling is listed in Appendix I of CITES. Trade even in captive-bred specimens is strictly regulated and the species is not generally available legally to private individuals. However, experienced aviculturalists may become affiliated with the captive-breeding program, allowing them to legally keep this species. About 1,000 individuals are believed to be held in captivity legally. The number of captive birds bought on black market is estimated to be twice the number of legally-acquired individuals in the captive breeding program.

While climate change has been causing some extremely high temperatures across much of the Northern Hemisphere, it seems to be causing an extra foggy (and slightly cooler) summer for us here in San Francisco. This last week I was trying to capture the fog in a few places around San Francisco and the Bay Area. Saturday I went up to Mount Tamalpais, across the Golden Gate, to catch it sinking into the heavily wooded valleys from a vantage point above it. I tried to make a bunch of long exposures, but something funky happed with my neutral density filter, so most of them are unusable. I salvaged a couple and have some photos that I captured at normal (fast) speed. Enjoy!

The Hill of Crosses is a site of pilgrimage about 12 km north of the city of Šiauliai, in northern Lithuania. The exact origins are unknown, but it is considered that the first crosses were placed on the former Jurgaičiai or Domantai hill fort after the 1831 Uprising.[1] Over the centuries, not only crosses, but giant crucifixes, carvings of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary and thousands of tiny effigies and rosaries have been brought here by Catholic pilgrims. The number of crosses is unknown, but estimates put it at about 50,000
