This large, robust salamander ranges in color from salmon to orange to reddish-brown to purplish-brown, with a translucent white underbelly. The snout appears “square” when viewed from above and the salamander has well-defined grooves near its eyes to its snout. The tail is laterally flattened with a fin-like tip. Young spring salamanders are lighter in color and have small gills. Their coloration does not have deeper reddish tints until adulthood. Total length ranges from 5 to 7.5 inches. Insects, worms, spiders, crustaceans, small invertebrates, and other salamanders make up the diet of spring salamanders. Some spring salamanders can be cannibalistic, eating the young of their own species.
Conserving the spring salamander relies heavily upon protecting its habitat and preventing encroachment. Habitats that may seem “ideal” could lack populations entirely due to their sensitivity. Groundwater pollution from fertilizer runoff, pesticides, road salt, and industrial chemicals can degrade the preferred cool, clean water. Damming of streams can lead to increased water temperatures and reduced oxygen levels. Intensive logging removes the forest canopy, thus increasing water temperature. Construction, agriculture, and poorly performed clear-cutting are all activities that can degrade high quality streams, produce thermal pollution, and reduce oxygen in the water. If a Northern Spring Salamander is seen, please leave it along and report its findings to the department of environment of that state you are in. Salamanders can be sensitive to changes in its environment, so tread lightly!

Gallery 224 at the Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard is pleased to present an exhibition of work from Montana-based potter Julia Galloway's most recent body of work, The Endangered Species Project: New England. Galloway works from each state's official list of species identified as endangered, threatened or extinct. She has created a series of covered jars, one urn for each species, illustrating the smallest Agassiz Clam Shrimp to the largest Eastern Elk.

Insects crawl into an opening under the "tongue." The translucent parts you see around the top are like windows that let in light. The insects think they are openings, and go to them, trying to get out. They are not openings. There are hairs pointing downwards inside the pitcher. The bugs eventually fall down, guided by the hairs, and can't get up.

These jellies are only visible due to the diffraction of the light. Very nice to see but I still don't get how to get them perfectly sharp with all the details on camera
this little fixer upper needed her mouth fixed so I did the best I could. I gave her new eyelashes, new craving on nose, philtrum, mouth, chin, boggled the eyes and gave her a face up and hair cut. Fixed her eye mech and gave her a sleep string. I'm really pleased with her transformation.
