This was a digital-to-physical project I fabricated and installed for architect Paul Preissner. A CNC router table was used to make a form generated in Rhinocad out of a material called HDU (high-density urethane).
I finished this form out as a mold and used it to make FRP parts, which I then tinted with a wash of varnish and artist oils. The effect was quite dreamy and appropriate for the business, a floation spa called Aguasol.
As a sculptor, it was an interesting project where I found the computer-generated form to be quite counterintuitive to a form one would create by hand.
The hidden bonuses of PAD. The young boy found a dead butterfly, so I handed over the book so that he could identify it. He soon found one which was quite similar. But it wasn't the right one. I turned to the right page and found why the boy hadn't spotted the right butterfly: the book's photograph showed the butterfly with its wings open, and ours had died with its wings closed. So we turned to Mummy's photographs. And hey presto, found the exact same underside wings. The cooperative butterfly in Mummy's photographs then showed us his beautiful upperside. The butterfly could now be identified. And mine was a very happy boy.
(and yes, he did check that the computer hadn't muddled up the pixels by delicately prying open the wings, checking them with the microscope etc etc).
Too lazy to create a mosaic with the sequence showing the id of the tortoiseshell. So here's a comma instead.

The original Today's 1206bl (on the left) is more beautiful than the "Repro" ones: she has wonderful hair and not a so high forehead. She also has a natural, healthy glow and a nice blush on her cheeks. Her face is not translucent at all and not so pale. Today's 1702 First Lot (in the middle) has a too pale and translucent skin and her hair are less voluminous and start too much behind, so her forehead is a bit high for me.
The color of make-up (blush) is not as nice as the original one. Today's 1702 Second Lot (on the right) has better hair than the First Lot doll, they are voluminous but the forehead is high, again. She is too pale and transparent too, with the same blush on her cheeks. The differences are not so evident between First and Second Lot, except for their hair.
They are beautiful, but the original one is perfect.

See that "translucent"-Cucumber on the left side of the plate- that is some BAD FOOD BEING SERVED!- add in a horrible use of flavorings, a smellier than old sock smelling Fish Sauce/some off-brand, and way too much additions- screwing up a normally simple dish.
With translucent material and transmitted light, I tend now not to use stacking in my photomicrogaphy, as it undermines the clarity from optical sectioning. However, here a stack reveals how the leaf apex has recurved margins, creating a "hood" appearance.
Note the interesting stacking artefacts due to movement of small suspended particles between image slices and because the frame size / magnification varies between slices.

During the Beijing Olympic Games 2008, I was lucky enough to watch the games inside the famous Watercube (Beijing National Aquatics Center). It is designed a consortium made up of PTW Architects (my workplace), Arup international engineering group, CSCEC, and CCDI.
This is an external night view of the ETFE bubbles from the outside with the standard blue light. Love the bubbles!
