THE TRANSITION

The Third Chapter Of My Life

13:30 hrs

16th July , 2004

Mumbai , India

I Landed in Mumbai, India on a humid july afternoon. My life was under a state of flux, where everything felt new and different. The smell of the mud to the temperature outside , from the language spoken here to the city roads, from the people to their clothes… all a new experience!!!

The agent who got my admission done, had sent a car to pick me up from the Mumbai international airport and drop me off at a hotel in Pune… Till date, l clearly remember my first day in India. I was delighted to see monkeys on the express-way … I was amazed with the wide variety of colours in India, the driving rules … each and everything ! There was so much new to see, my eyes didn’t know where to look, I missed catching up with so many interesting things on my way to Pune!

(SFAC, Ft. Stewart, Georgia-March 29, 2013) – Family fun was the well-received mandate for Soldiers of Fort Stewart’s Warriors in Transition Battalion (WTB) Friday at the base’s WTB Soldier Family Assistance Center (SFAC).

The quarterly event, sponsored by the Ft. Stewart Army Community Services division, presented a variety of activities for families including face painting, charades, egg hunting, hula hooping and good eats; all free of charge.

“Our (military) families deserve to have a variety of fun options,” said Linda Boitey, the center’s Outreach Coordinator. “The responsibility to our wounded, ill and injured Soldiers does not end with services for them; it begins at the core of what makes our Soldiers strong – their families!”

The games encouraged children to use critical thinking skills and team strategy development with the biggest benefit being the smiles.

The non-stop action of the evening brought an unusual transformation of sorts. The faces of the children and adults began to reveal what instinct fueled their spirit of resiliency. Pandas, lions, comic book characters came to life with the help of WTB wife Julia Bethune’s face painting.

The bright colors covered their faces but nothing could camouflage their enjoyment! Bethune says the gift of ‘grinning’ has its own healing benefits.

“We are all in this together,” Bethune said, cracking open another bright color to the excitement of a youngster. “You can wait for someone to bring the fun to you but sharing a laugh is what makes our family team work.” (U.S. Army Photo by Staff Sgt. Tracy J. Smith)

My photographs represent my transition to the University of Florida. I recently transferred from Santa Fe College, so I am trying to adjust from a semi-small environment to an even larger environment. Each photo shows my process of discovering the campus. My goal for each photo was to depict John Szarkowski’s five issues, such as the thing itself, the detail, the frame, the time, and the vantage point. I have some images that are my favorite, and I believe these few photos represent all of Szarkowski’s five issues.

Some of my pictures focus on shadows, and I was inspired by the work of the photographers Harry Callahan and Paul Strand. For example, the photo of my shadow on the sidewalk. Also, my picture with the star water fountain represents Szarkowski’s issues concerning time and detail. When I took a photo of the water fountain, the water is paused, and I noticed the bubbles within the water stream. Moreover, if I had to pick which photograph was my favorite, it would be the picture with me crouched down in the hallway. I love this photo because I like how I changed the filter to black and white. After all, the building my class was in gives me early 50 and 60 vibes. Overall, I hope you enjoy viewing my photos and that they help you feel as if you are exploring the campus with me.

My self-chosen theme was the transition of focus, with also an exploration of the theme of ghosts/ghost imagery.

I realise this method has been done to death, but I feel it fits what I wanted to do accordingly, and therefore so be it.

These are actually taken with a scanner so really it's not photography as such, but whatever....

Jinling Lu is set for a reno/demo/revamp. I'm not sure how much of this will be torn down, and I truly hope it will be just a cosmetic makeover, but the one thing that will change dramatically is the old soul of the neighbourhood. New, higher rents will be far much for the former residents/retail to pay. Even if the buildings remain, there will definitely be a new heart in this street.

Here's to the Former French Concession's Jinling Lu. I hope you're handled with soft hands through this transition.
