The children were back at school

with masks and with their desks spread apart

Would you rather be in person or be at home learning?

And it was snack time

So the plastic dividers were set up while the children

took off their masks; like gloves on their faces coming off

And children are so delicate as much as they are resilient.

They haven’t even met most of their classmates

in real life until today.

Even children during a pandemic still find ways to play

First graders sitting carefully in their own space

Trying not to sneeze or cough

"Would you rather be a princess or a serpent?"

One student asked.

"A princess!" another answered.

“You can’t be a princess! You’re a boy”

A shout was heard, a teacher intervened

“Xe can be whoever xe wants to be.”

Would you rather live in a world

Where we have not just illnesses of the body

Where we let hatred and ignorance define our choices?

Or would you rather live in this one:

Where a teacher says, “Enough. Let’s learn and grow.”

“Our classroom is a safe space.”

I’d rather make our whole world this space.

I am not sure at all what is going to happen to our country with the appointees and the ruthless opinions about policy that will go unchecked. Maybe, Chicago will become like a Berlin during the rise of the Nazis where there is a liberal enclave. I’m not sure. But, I do know that we have to decide as a people interested in the well being of others whether we want to protect each other. Are we going to turn a blind eye to brutality…to homophobia, to racism, to transphobia in our streets? You have to find the irony in the fact that for years the conservatives waged war under the unrelenting mantra “They hate our freedom!” and the first thing they do when granted ultimate power is to look for opportunities to take away the freedoms of others who don’t fit into their perfect boxes.

I turn towards the forest filled with fungi and trees and all of the research showing that there is communication even between forests for aspects of nature to warn each other and protect each other. Surely, nature has more emotional intelligence than people these days.

I keep also hearing liberals/progressives saying…”Who keeps us safe? We keep us safe!” Let’s see it.

Hundreds of people turned out in the rain on ‘Good Friday’ for a ‘Trans Rights’ demonstration in Manchester’s St. Peter’s Square. It came after the UK’s Supreme Court ruled this week that the terms ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ in the Equality Act refer to a biological woman and biological sex; which can cause problems down the line regarding ‘Single sex changing rooms / toilets’, Sport and many other issues previously dismissed. An enormous can of worms has just been opened…….!

As the Women's March approaches, a reminder that it's more important how a human being self identifies than what genitals each person was born with. If you support Women's rights walk with us. I support Women's Rights, Human Rights, Trans Rights, Immigrant Rights, Gay Rights, and the rights of all people regardless of culture, religion, socioeconomic, or race.. We all need to be united in impeaching Trump. Let's march together now and dance later.

The only good news lately is that Chelsea Manning was released. Never forget that being born in the wrong body is already horrifying enough and most kids realize this at a very young age. We must be compassionate and we must fight all legislation that discriminates against the LGBTQ community. Their lives matter and, if you care about human rights, you must fight for them!

This is just one more reason this administration must be impeached and we must get a new election....one that represents the people and honors vs. ignores constituents. People > Profit.
