Nebraska National Guard Soldiers with the 2-134th Infantry train for airborne operations, Aug. 15, 2020, at the Mead Training Site in Yutan, Nebraska. Following the training, the battalion participated in a ceremony hosted by Lakota braves Russ Cournoyer and Lante Swallow, who performed two songs and presented a Tokala staff to the unit in a long standing Native American tradition, representing the induction of the battalion into the Tokala Society. A Tokala is the strongest of men in the Kit Fox Warrior Society. Created by U.S. Army Veteran Nick Gibbons, the cedar staff has the face of a warrior carved into it, is adorned with fox and a single eagle feather, plus the insignia of the 2-134th Infantry. If the battalion should participate in an overseas campaign in the future, they will add a feather and a patch to the staff, commemorating that deployment. The ceremony was intended to bring together the brave warrior culture of our nation and carry that spirit forward within the new battalion. (Nebraska National Guard photo by Sgt. Lisa Crawford)

When I visited Huxley's I was able to watch this young Harris Hawk being trained to fly to the glove. All of the birds at Huxley's are captive bred and have been imprinted on humans. A large number of them have been rescued from homes which were completely unsuitable. While I hate to see wild birds in captivity, these birds aren't really wild because they have never known anything else and probably wouldn't be able to survive on their own. They are very well cared for and have regular flying sessions. It's wonderful to be able to see them up close. Huxley's also treat injured wild birds of prey that are brought to them and release them back into the wild.

Proposed run schedule. For cross training each hour of cycling or mtn biking is equivalent to 5 miles of running. Rest days will include either walking or cycling because I am bad at rest days - but no running on rest days, generally.

Learn the Basic Needs of Your Dog

It is important that you understand the basics of dog training. I am not referring to the "how to" of specific training exercises but the basic things your dog needs to be happy and healthy. If these basic needs are being met training your dog will be easier because you will have developed a bond with your dog.

Six Things Your Dog Needs

1.Leadership and guidance - Your dog needs to have clear boundaries, as well as guidance and feedback regarding his behavior. Often this is referred to as being the "Alpha Dog" or "Alpha Leader."

The term of "Alpha Dog" can be misleading. Being the leader does not mean punishing or dominating your dog. It means teaching him or coaching him regarding the behaviors you expect. If your dog sees you as the source of pleasure he will trust you and do anything to please you.

A good leader sets boundaries from the time a puppy or dog becomes a part of the household. If you are not clear about your expectations or ignore behavior that violates the boundaries that have been set your dog will become confused and not understand what is expected of him.

In order to become a good leader, you must learn how to lead. Some dogs will follow you, even if you have poor leadership skills, but many will not. You must learn how to be an effective leader. You must train yourself before you can train your dog.

2. Sense of Security - Your leadership and guidance help provide a sense of security for your dog. Your dog will know he can count on you to be consistent. Your positive guidance builds a bond with your dog and helps him feel loved.

Your dog needs to know that you will take the time to play with him, walk him and interact in other ways, even when he has grown out of his puppy stage. This helps provide the emotional security he needs.

Your dog also needs physical security. He needs to know that there will be food and water available for him as well as shelter. Establishing a routine helps him feel secure.

3. Active companionship - Dogs are social beings and have a need for companionship. They are there to greet us enthusiastically when we return home. They love to be near us instead of lying in their own bed or being alone outside.

However, just because your dog likes to be near you does not mean having him near you as you watch T.V. or read is the only companionship he needs. Your dog needs active companionship. He needs you to interact with him and play with him.

Having a dog requires you to be willing to give him the active companionship he desires. It is that type of companionship that creates a happy, healthy dog.

4. Physical Stimulation - Your dog loves to exercise! He looks at it as a reward. If your dog does not get enough exercise he will look for other ways to expend his energy. If a dog is getting adequate exercise many so-called "behavior problems" will take care of themselves.

Most dogs need more than a walk around the block. They need to be able to run, to smell the scents of nature. They love to fetch a ball or catch a frisbee, anything active is to their liking. Taking your dog on a hike is also a great way for him to exercise.

5.Mental Stimulation - Dogs need to be challenged mentally. They need to master skills and learn new things. If they are not being mentally challenged they become bored.

One of the best ways to stimulate your dog mentally is to teach him new tricks. He loves to show off what he has learned and please you.

Your dog is also stimulating his mind when he wants to sniff everything he comes across. This gives him an opportunity to process different smells, sights, and sounds. When you take your dog for a walk make sure you let him use some of the time to explore what is around him. It can be at the beginning or middle of a walk, but he needs an opportunity to process what is happening in his neighborhood.

6.Variety - Your dog needs some variation in his routine, especially highly intelligent breeds who require more stimulation. You can surprise him regularly, if possible once a day, with an extra outing or activity, a new toy, or a new trick to be learned. With dogs, variety is the spice of life.

If you will meet these basic needs of your dog he will feel loved and will bond with you in a special way. The connection between you will be strong and will provide the security your dog needs even when you are away.

These basic needs are so important that if you do not have the time to provide them you should reconsider having a dog. A dog is a great responsibility and you must be able to provide what your dog needs to be healthy and happy.

It is also important to prepare yourself to be able to teach and guide your dog appropriately. You need to prepare yourself so you will be a good companion for your dog.

Take time to study dog training guides so you will have strong leadership skills to help you coach your dog effectively. There are many available and one will be right for you and your dog.
