Weather radar in stained glass. Image taken from weather radar as eye of Hurricane Hugo passes over Charleston Harbor. Stained glass detail from one of the side panels for the new arched door, an expansion of the original stained glass model for the chapel, both of which were added in 1993 to the restored St. Luke's Chapel.
This is an example of the extensive restoration work performed on the chapel after it was severely damaged during Hurricane Hugo in September 1989. The chapel windows were originally installed in the late 19th century with a few additions made as memorials just after the First World War. With the decision to rebuild the chapel after it was all but destroyed by the hurricane, an opportunity was presented to restore the windows which were already in need of repairs before the storm. This detail is from a side panel located in one of the memorial windows on the south wall.
The Medical University of South Carolina acquired the chapel when the Board of Trustees of the state medical college purchased the former US Arsenal and Porter Military Academy campus in 1964. MUSC has since expanded onto the 11 acre downtown campus leaving a few reminders and some evidence of the early 19th century Army installation and post Civil War orphanage, training school and finally a 20th century prep school.
Porter Academy was founded in 1867 and ceased to exist in its original form in 1964 when it was merged with two other private schools. In 1965, after its first year, the new Porter-Gaud School moved from this campus to a new;y constructed one, where it still is, in the West Ashley suburbs of Charleston, having sold the old campus to what is now MUSC. The chapel was one of three buildings to survive the plan to demolish most of a 19th century academic complex that had included ten historic buidings. MUSC has in recent years made a significant and fairly successful move to restore and incorporate the remaining historic fabric into the mainstream and image of the nearly 200 year old medical college.
St. Luke's Chapel, renamed in 1965 for the patron saint of medicine, f/k/a St. Timothy's Chapel for the patron saint of children who according to tradition was the devoted student of St. Paul, is now part of the campus of the Medical University of South Carolina, Ashley Avenue at Bee Street, Charleston, SC. Employees receive training to remove Tank W-1A prior to excavating it. From 1951 until 1986, the tank collected and stored liquid waste from radiochemical separations and high-radiation facilities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, until significant levels of soil and groundwater contamination were traced to the vessel.

Nhill was a training ground for many pilots through WWII and they used these planes to train in. Borg Sorenson found bits and pieces all over the countryside, and piece by piece built it again.Over an 18 year period It was offered to our Community for $300.000.00 and could have been sold overseas for twice as much. Two years of fund raising,[ no government help], we did it. It will be housed in our museum, never to fly again [condition of purchase] though will be allowed to taxi on special occasions. One very happy day for our town.

We’re continuing to ensure we’re prepared to keep you safe at the thousand-plus large-scale events that we police in Greater Manchester every year with the specialist training of hundreds of our officers.
Our rigorous week-long public order training programme has been nationally-recognised as properly equipping us for a whole variety of events – such as sporting fixtures, festivals, carnivals, and protests – to maintain order in circumstances where there is a risk to ourselves and the public.
Each year we police around 1200 such events in GM that mostly pass without any significant incident; however, we ensure that in the rare instances issues do arise, we have officers specially trained in maintaining order with the tactics and skills to keep the wider public and our officers safe.
As well as putting 500 new officers through their paces every year, we have many more experienced officers who also go through the intensive course to refresh their knowledge and skills so that we have the necessary number of qualified cops to be deployed to such big events.
Chief Inspector Kirsten Buggy, of our Specialist Operational Training, People and Development Branch said: “All our officers will police major events given the nature of serving for one of the largest communities in the country, but we also ensure that a high amount of those officers is trained in using the enhanced tactics that may be needed on some occasions.
“Part of the training our officers do here is very-much a last resort and can seem excessive to some, but we’ve seen in the past how valuably important it is that we can call on such an insurance policy for the rare situations where public order needs to be regained and maintained to keep you safe.
“This is the kind of policing that goes to show just how brave and committed our officers are at being on the front line and doing what they can to keep communities safe from those who may look to cause harm, and year-on-year we’re making sure that more of our officers gain the experience that this vital training can offer to the benefit of us all.”
We’re currently recruiting more officers than ever – fancy joining our team too? Find out how you can here: www.gmp.police.uk/recruitment
