This is my favorite photo from the trip. I'm still not entirely comfortable taking photos of strangers, but when I gestured with my camera at the lady sitting down, she smiled, turned to face me a little more, and straightened her sari. I meant the photo to focus on her, but serendipitously, I think it's even stronger because of the woman glowering in back -- I love her pose, and the expression on her face.
My father told me that he can tell, looking at them, that one is Tamil and the other Sinhalese. I can't tell myself. What do you think? Is it obvious?

38 pages of black and white freight train graffiti
Saturday 30th April 2022 marked the first day of passenger train operation on the recently reconstructed section of the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway between Stonehenge Works and Mundays Hill. Passenger trains have not venture along this part of the line for about four decades.

East Midland Trains HST Power Car 43058 is pictured on Platform 5 at Sheffield on June 6th 2009 heading the 09-27 to St. Pancras International.

According to the schedule, I had to go back to Lucerne in order to catch the train to return to Zurich. It was absolutely sad to leave Rigi, a truly amazing mountain!
Finished train cookies - first attempt at decorated cookies! Lots of lessons learned! My black piping was originally too thick and didn't quite smooth out. And I didn't wait long enough for the blue to dry before I did the yellow headlights, so there was some bleeding. Live and learn though right!?

Boarding the train to Seattle, Washington. This is locomotive 467, an Electro-Motive Diesel F-59PHI, which is going to push the train into Seattle's King Station.
While airplanes can fly in a straight line, trains need to hug the coast of the East China Sea, adding considerable travel distance. I have generated this map using a GPS onboard and the excellent gpsvisualizer.com. While the exact location of the tracks and the details of the route are widely documented (and visible on satellite maps) I figured it would be cool to bring home a precise trail. In red is the first segment of the trip from Beijing to Qinhuangdao, where we arrived in the evening. The second segment is missing—unsure of the reliability of the onboard power outlet once in the DPRK, I decided to recharge my GPS overnight. The green segment is our trail from Dandong, the Chinese border city is where we arrived around 7am, to Pyongyang.

An oil train lead by two ES44s snakes around the curve at Division St just before a cloud takes over. This day was cruel to us railfans on Kellogg Blvd. There were only a few clouds in the sky, yet every time a train would come by, that one cloud in the sky would move in. I nabbed this shot by going all out with my lens; you can see the cloud creeping in at the very base of the shot.

This train runs from Lorton, Virginia to Sanford, Florida daily. It makes no stops in between. The unique thing about this train is that you can have your car put on board and take it with you to Florida or to Virginia.
The Auto Train runs daily northbound and southbound.
