When the Erie merged with the Lackawanna Railroad in 1962, a program was initiated with the new railroad to consolidate and eliminate redundant trackage. The Erie and the Lackawanna paralleled each other closely in Passaic, and the city had made it long known that they disliked having the railroad run up the center of Main Ave, and the state wanted a portion of the ROW further south for a new highway. So, it was a easy choice to abandon the tracks running through downtown Passaic and shift all traffic to the Lackawanna's tracks a mile or so away and retitle that the new "main line".
I would be standing on the tracks in this modern photo. The station building where the grey car is, the freight house by the black car, and the Central Theater beg hind the Dunkin' Donuts where the McDonald's now stands and against the brick building.
The tracks ran inline with the curb directly in front of me, over that gold car and white van in the distance and behind the tall brick building.
Some times life is like that, we know there is still a long way to go..but cant get a start, signal seems to be red always.
We had a cold, foggy morning in Lancaster. I passed these railroad tracks and decided to stop for a picture. The snow is now melted away. It was nice while it lasted.
