During a heatwave in London

Canary Wharf Winter Lights, London.

I took this portrait of an unusually cooperative cormorant down at the East India Dock basin in the east end of London almost four years ago. The background colour comes from the paintwork on the lock gates at the dock entrance, and the bird is looking very smart in breeding plumage.

This shape really reminds me of a Star Destroyer. Anyway, the architect was Berthold Lubetkin and the building was built in 1962. I have also been to visit his Bevin Court building which also features a spiral staircase, better than this one, but not as high (19 storeys in this case).

I learned that some of the microwave dishes attached to the tower are used for high frequency trading between UK and Germany where every fraction of a second counts to get an edge over competitors.

It would seem counterintuitive that it would be done over radio rather than something more 'modern' like fiber optics, but it turns out that microwaves lose less speed over the air, compared to fiber optics. But microwave propagation requires line of sight to the next tower, so finance companies are also exploring shortwave (longer distances, less information) and satellite transmission too.

Sivill House is a 76-flat council housing block on Columbia Road in Bethnal Green, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The building has 19-storeys, at a total height of 59 metres.

Sivill House was designed in the Constructivist style by Douglas Bailey, Francis Skinner and Berthold Lubetkin, the successors to the Tecton Group, and was completed in 1962. The nearby Dorset Estate was also designed by the same team.

Bethnal Green Station, East London. A memorial for the 173 people who died in a crush to enter after people slipped on the steps during an air raid alarm on 3rd March 1943. The highest civilian casualty event in the UK during WW2 with, ironically, no bombs or aircraft involved.
