Once a common boat, used to bring goods into central London from the estuary and beyond, only a few Thames sailing barges have been preserved. The flat bottomed boat could access canals and the hinged mast lowered to go under bridges. In rougher seas the leeboards could be lowered for stability as it had such a shallow keel.
