Tooth with a front feebs at the Unridden Session

To make up the trifecta, here's a Tooth-billed Bowerbird, spotted on the Lake Eacham circuit walk.

Alas, he was off the track a bit, so this was the best shot I could get.

Still that means I'm only short one Qld bowerbird, the Fawn-breasted Bowerbird (which occurs right up the top of Cape York, so it'll be for another trip).

Or a door.

Dooth.

Yet still a few left intact.

Similarities to my (extracted) wisdom tooth are only incidental! ;-))

This bright purple fungus caught my eye as I was walking through the woods. I found it in various stages of growth, all on the same fallen tree. A quick google search tells me it's called Trichaptum biforme a.k.a Violet-toothed Polypore.

It's the point in every young adult's life when they reach the 'age of wisdom'. And how are we greeted by it? A trip to oral surgeon's, of course!

My wisdom teeth were in pretty decent shape. Some dentists might have said I wouldn't be needing to get them removed at all. But just in case, we went ahead with the procedure and this is the final result.

I was actually up and running by day three after the surgery, and I had the stitches removed this afternoon. I wore the earrings into the dentist's office, and, as you might imagine, she got a real kick out it. So much so that she took photos to post on her website!

Teeth were cleaned and set with sterling silver. I cannot wait to wear these to the Festival of the Arts tomorrow.

COME SEE ME! I'll be around the main lawn tomorrow morning checking out the other artist's wares!

Toothed crust is a common type of fungi, with many different species. It is often found on the dead branches of hardwood trees, as seen in this photo.

I finally got to use this super cute tooth fairy pillow this weekend. My daughter lost her first tooth. Crazy how fast she is growing!!!

The tooth fairy visited her, left fairy dust all over her room, turned her water by her bed pink, and left her a little cash in the pocket of this pillow.

My daughter's smile the next morning was priceless. :-)

Just received a new tooth game (those tiny tooth pieces are so cute!!) I think the light is perfect today so I took this shoot.

The saber-toothed cat was as large as an African lion but much more heavily built. It was an active predator that relied on stealth and ambush rather than speed to catch its prey of bison, camels, horses and ground sloths.

This is an amazing piece made by a good friend, Laurie Brown. I'm so honored to have this around my neck.

This necklace is made from a few of Guy's teeth cast in gold and silver. Simple, precious and a wonderful momento mori.

Thank you Laurie, I wear it proudly.

This is the Shark's Tooth, a tiki cocktail created by Don The Beachcomber in the 1960's. A cursory amount of googling tiki cocktails usually yields infuriating amount of misinformation. Much of this is caused by lack of diligence and work ethic, but there is deeper layer. Because of the immense popularity of polynesian restaurants and their rum cocktails from the 1930's and onward (tiki is term invented much later), copycat cocktails were rampant and many weren't trying to be particularly accurate. Oftentimes, a tiki cocktail has two surviving versions, one by Donn Beach and the other by Trader Vic (sometimes even more, like the Mai Tai).

Unintentionally, I'm slightly adding to that confusion by making a simplified version of Donn Beach's version (Trader Vic's is boring, #sorrynotsorry). The original Donn Beach version is a blended cocktail where the Jamaican rum is reserved to be drizzled on top and then served without a straw. I typically prefer more homogeneous cocktails, so my serve is a streamlined version. This drink brings a lot of the standard-issue tropical ingredients, but the fun twist is the 'bloody' use of maraschino cherry syrup. That small touch brings a unique kind of richness that pairs beautifully with the rest of the tropical components.

1 oz aged Barbados rum

1 oz aged Jamaican rum

0.75 oz fresh lime juice

0.5 oz pineapple juice

0.5 oz simple syrup

1 tsp Luxardo maraschino cherry syrup (see note)

1 dash Angostura (optional)

Combine all of the ingredients into a shaker tin. Add ice and shake vigorously until arctic cold. Double-strain into a chilled rocks glass over pebble ice. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and pineapple fronds.

Note: This ingredient is critical so don't substitute with inferior cherries. Trader Vic's version uses grenadine, which is... fine I guess.

Last night there was much excitement as my wee girl (she is 6) lost her very first baby tooth. The tooth fairy was rather generous as it was her first tooth.

Carcharodon megalodon Agassiz, 1843 - fossil shark tooth from the Tertiary of offshore-North Carolina, USA. (facial side; ~8.1 centimeters across at its widest; collected by "The Fossil Exchange" divers)

Carcharodon megalodon is an extinct giant white shark (also known as the megatooth shark). Like all sharks, the skeleton was cartilaginous, and the only commonly preserved fossil remains are teeth. The teeth of this ancient giant shark had serrated edges, which function to readily slice through flesh. Estimates of original body size vary from 12 meters to over 35 meters long.

Fossil remains of Carcharodon megalodon are widespread in inferred warm-water marine deposits of Miocene and Pliocene age. Considering the size of megatooth sharks, their diet is considered to have principally consisted of whales (shark tooth marks on fossil whale bones are not uncommon).

Stratigraphy: Yorktown Formation, Upper Miocene to Lower Pliocene

Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Chondrichthyes, Elasmobranchii, Lamniformes, Carcharodontidae (or Lamnidae, or Otodontidae)

Locality: "deep water ledges 45 miles offshore" from the coast of North Carolina, USA
