The Boukala is a word which literary means the Pot. In the North of Algeria, mainly Algiers and the neighbouring towns, it is a game. Generally, women tend to play it more than men. To intertain themselves and , of course, to pass time.

There are different ways to play Boukala. Some simple, were you have to bring a scarf, knote it and then say " Bes'melah ebdit, ew 3anbi silit, ew hadi el Boukala l' Y enwit" ( with the name of Alah and its prophet Mohamed peace be up on him I will start and to Y i name this Boukala). Then, there is a rhyming statment which may speak about hope, love, marriage, pilgrimage to Mecca or even bad news. "El Falle" or " Fate" is a mixter of Boukala with a ritual process. With a pot full of seven dropes from different houses, seven seeds from different plants, seven...ect you gather a group of people and you ask each of them to put a ring ( or something else) inside. Then, the Boukala would be played 3 times. After that, all rings would be taken off and the pot placed face to face to sky and its stars. At mid night, one of the group would take some drops from that Boukala and say " Ya Falle ya felfal, djibli fale Y men kol el boldane". the aim of this game is to hear the sounds and to interpret them.

Thus, games in Algeria would shift from simple joyful games to others more hazardous to manipulate.

C1840 and built for the London and North Western Railway as a mineral and coal

wharf. Asymmetrical composition of horseshoe design built within the angle of

Sheepcote and St Vincent Streets where the entrance is flanked by 2 houses.

Ribbed ramps laid from the entrance, one straight down and under an arch at the

crown of the horseshoe, the other around the horseshoe and over the arch. Red

brick and some stone trim; slate roofs. The stables and stores are arranged in

a horseshoe shape and stand above more streets approached by the many roads under

the arch. They consist of 10 single storeyed bays, a central 152 storeyed bays

and another 10 single storeyed bays. The arrangement is somewhat impaired on

the right by a later glazed wooden addition. Round headed wooden casement

windows and segment headed stable doors. Beneath the arch, at the back of this

building, more streets within arches separated one from another by battered buttresses.

Frederick Woodward. Red brick with terracotta dressings and Cumberland and Welsh slate

roofs with various brick stacks. In Netherlandish Renaissance style. Complex plan

with various ranges occupying corner site. Mostly of 3 storeys, basement and attic.

Entrance to corner on right has elaborate terracotta archway surmounted by relief figures

within a tympanum. Steps lead to part-glazed doors filled with elaborate stained glass

including portrait roundels of Kelvin, Shakespeare, Rubens and Mozart. Tall basket-

arched windows over, with moulded terracotta frames and ornamental cornice hoods.

Coped Dutch gable. To right a canted battlemented section containing the staircase

with similar elaborately ornamented window frames. Further to right, facing Hagley

Road, a 2-storey range in similar style. On right an elaborate terracotta archway

leading to door, and a clock tower over with clock faces within balconied arches and a

domed open belvedere on top. Behind this section rises the second span of the range facing

Church Street. Wide sash windows, some with terracotta decoration. On the roof ridge

an elaborate domed lantern. To left of the front entrance the end of the range facing

Church Street which has a large polygonal 2-storey bay with battlemented parapet and

large arched window over. To left the front facing Church Street which is a 9-window

range with 4 slightly projecting gabled sections and similar fenestration with elaborate

terracotta window surrounds. Further doorway in 2nd gable from left. 2 elaborate

domed lanterns on roof. Interior: glazed doors and partitions, staircase with

decorative cast-iron balustrade and a fine and extensive series of stained glass windows

in art-nouveau style, one signed S Evans, Stained Glass Works, West Smethwick. These

are most elaborate on the stairs but continue on both the Hagley Road and Church Street

fronts and are a very important feature of the building. Andrew Carnegie contributed

£3,000 to the library's foundation and a further £700 to the 1908 newsroom extension.

this used to be the Teddy Bear Museum in Stratford upon Avon. Now it appears to be closed. "Shop to let"

I remember when I was younger when this was open.

May have gone in there as a kid (can't remember - it was a long time ago)

Established 1988. 21 years later it is no more. Sad, what of the fate of those teddy bears?

To the left of the former Teddy Bear Museum is The Shakespeare Hospice Charity Shop.

On Greenhill Street.

I'm not sure that we ever went to the Teddy Bear Museum, just walked past it (although we thought about it).

The Teddy Bear Museum is at 19 Greenhill Street. And is a Grade II listed building.

House, now museum. C16 or early C17 with c1800 refronting. Painted brick with some internal timber-frame; tile roof with brick end stack. 2 storeys; 2-window range. Top modillioned brick cornice. Ground floor has C20 shop front with recessed central entrance and top frieze and cornice. 1st floor has 2 windows with 4-pane sashes. End wall posts, that to right full-height that to left 1st floor only. Rear range under catslide roof. INTERIOR: exposed chamfered beams and timber-framing; blocked segmental-headed entrance to right return; roof has 3 trusses with tie beams and collars, the central truss lacking collar, that to left end with exposed arch-brace, wind braces. (Bearman R: Stratford-upon-Avon: A History of its Streets and Buildings: Nelson: 1988-: 31).

Victorian buildings at the bottom of Hagley Road in Stourbridge, West Midlands.

This building is the former Free Library & Technical College.

On the corner of Church Street and Hagley Road.

It was Grade II listed in 1989 under the title Stourbridge College of Art.

But the whole building is currently To Let, for office, leisure, studio and storage usage.

College of Art, formerly town library and technical college. 1903-4 and 1908-9 by

Frederick Woodward. Red brick with terracotta dressings and Cumberland and Welsh slate

roofs with various brick stacks. In Netherlandish Renaissance style. Complex plan

with various ranges occupying corner site. Mostly of 3 storeys, basement and attic.

Entrance to corner on right has elaborate terracotta archway surmounted by relief figures

within a tympanum. Steps lead to part-glazed doors filled with elaborate stained glass

including portrait roundels of Kelvin, Shakespeare, Rubens and Mozart. Tall basket-

arched windows over, with moulded terracotta frames and ornamental cornice hoods.

Coped Dutch gable. To right a canted battlemented section containing the staircase

with similar elaborately ornamented window frames. Further to right, facing Hagley

Road, a 2-storey range in similar style. On right an elaborate terracotta archway

leading to door, and a clock tower over with clock faces within balconied arches and a

domed open belvedere on top. Behind this section rises the second span of the range facing

Church Street. Wide sash windows, some with terracotta decoration. On the roof ridge

an elaborate domed lantern. To left of the front entrance the end of the range facing

Church Street which has a large polygonal 2-storey bay with battlemented parapet and

large arched window over. To left the front facing Church Street which is a 9-window

range with 4 slightly projecting gabled sections and similar fenestration with elaborate

terracotta window surrounds. Further doorway in 2nd gable from left. 2 elaborate

domed lanterns on roof. Interior: glazed doors and partitions, staircase with

decorative cast-iron balustrade and a fine and extensive series of stained glass windows

in art-nouveau style, one signed S Evans, Stained Glass Works, West Smethwick. These

are most elaborate on the stairs but continue on both the Hagley Road and Church Street

fronts and are a very important feature of the building. Andrew Carnegie contributed

£3,000 to the library's foundation and a further £700 to the 1908 newsroom extension.

Greek St WC1. I never realised I took so many pictures of doorways until www.flickr.com/people/kateg/ for a pro account! - Now I have made them into a set!

Now that it is more or less open, I made a visit to Longbridge Town Centre, on a chilly, but sunny Sunday.

Not realising that the 45 doesn't serve Longbridge on Sunday's I waited over an hour for a 49 in Cotteridge (should have been 1 bus every half an hour).

So when I got to Longbridge Town Centre, I went straight to the new Costa Coffee.

A few new shops on Longbridge Lane, some with temporary signs.

The old bridge over the railway is now open, so you can go this way to the shops / cafes / restaurants.

This building at the far north end of High Street looks interesting. It is Henley Mill at 1 High Street in Henley-in-Arden.

A former corn mill from the 19th century, and an 18th century house.

It is a Grade II listed building.

Mill and attached mill house, now offices. C18 house with

mid-late C19 mill. Brick with C20 rendering to street; tile

roofs. Gable facing, front to right.

EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic; 6-window range with 2 gabled

cross-wings. 6 giant segmental-headed recesses. Top cornices.

Segmental-headed windows with fixed small-paned iron glazing;

4 windows to ground floor with signs of blocked entrance to

right of centre. 4 C20 skylights. Cross-gable to right has

segmental-headed window with 10/10 horned sash to each floor;

end cross-gable has blocked segmental-headed window to ground

and first floors and 2-light small-paned casement to gable.

Left return to street. Segmental-headed windows with fixed

glazing to low rear wing. 3-window rear range has top

modillioned brick cornice; later large hipped porch and

windows with sills, and stucco wedge lintels with key blocks

over 10/10 horned sashes, the central first-floor window is

reduced, with 2 small lights.

INTERIOR: not inspected.

Important streetscape value, closing view to north end of High

Street.

Henley Mill - Heritage Gateway

This is the back of the mill - the mill house.

I think the mill is for sale / to let.

There was a river further down Millfield Court.

Ancient latrines were fitted with plumbing that draws on the ancient aqueduct.

Town house now shop. C16 with C20 alterations. Close-studded timber-framing with plaster infill; old and renewed tile roof. 2-unit plan with rear wing. 2 storeys; 2-window range. C20 entrance. Jettied 1st floor with C20 windows and entrance below. 1st floor has 3-light leaded casements. Gablet to end of rear wing. INTERIOR: exposed close-studded framing and heavy chamfered beams and joists. (Bearman R: Stratford-upon-Avon: A History of its Streets and Buildings: Nelson: 1988-: 31).

Listed as the Fountain Laundry. And before that as the Tudor Dairy.

House, now museum. C16 or early C17 with c1800 refronting. Painted brick with some internal timber-frame; tile roof with brick end stack. 2 storeys; 2-window range. Top modillioned brick cornice. Ground floor has C20 shop front with recessed central entrance and top frieze and cornice. 1st floor has 2 windows with 4-pane sashes. End wall posts, that to right full-height that to left 1st floor only. Rear range under catslide roof. INTERIOR: exposed chamfered beams and timber-framing; blocked segmental-headed entrance to right return; roof has 3 trusses with tie beams and collars, the central truss lacking collar, that to left end with exposed arch-brace, wind braces. (Bearman R: Stratford-upon-Avon: A History of its Streets and Buildings: Nelson: 1988-: 31).

House, now museum. C16 or early C17 with c1800 refronting. Painted brick with some internal timber-frame; tile roof with brick end stack. 2 storeys; 2-window range. Top modillioned brick cornice. Ground floor has C20 shop front with recessed central entrance and top frieze and cornice. 1st floor has 2 windows with 4-pane sashes. End wall posts, that to right full-height that to left 1st floor only. Rear range under catslide roof. INTERIOR: exposed chamfered beams and timber-framing; blocked segmental-headed entrance to right return; roof has 3 trusses with tie beams and collars, the central truss lacking collar, that to left end with exposed arch-brace, wind braces. Manufactory, formerly a pair of dwellings with rear workshop ranges. Early C19.

MATERIALS: Red brick with bracketed eaves to a hipped slate roof and plain band corniced chimneys.

PLAN: Rectangular plan comprising a pair of former dwellings with workshop ranges extending to the rear.

EXTERIOR: Near-symmetrical three-storeyed frontage of four bays onto Caroline Street. The fenestration consists of revealed sash windows, some of which retain their glazing bars. The ground and first floor window openings have painted stone sills and reeded lintels flanked by shallow consoles to thin cornices over. The entrance is sited in the second bay from the left. The door case has engaged, slender, fluted Greek Doric columns which support an entablature and open bracketed pediment. There are plain reveals to the round-headed doorway and a six-panel door with a plain fanlight. A panel above the first floor windows reads `PICKERING & MAYELL LTD / RELIANCE WORKS'. The north return (Kenyon Street) of the attached workshop ranges which extend from the rear of both houses retain some original wooden-framed multi-pane windows.

SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: To the front (west) are cast-iron railings with crescent heads of distinctive Birmingham type.

HISTORY: The area around St Paul's Square to the north west of the city centre was developed as a residential and industrial zone from the 1820s and was eventually to become the Jewellery Quarter. The jewellery-case-making works of Pickering and Mayell Ltd, known as Reliance Works, was built in around 1826, originally as a pair of houses (Nos.41-42) with rear workshops. Early occupants included the noted Birmingham silversmiths George Unite and Nathaniel Mills. The company of Pickering and Mayell has occupied the premises since circa 1900.

REASON FOR DESIGNATION: 42 Caroline Street is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

* Early-C19 dwellings with rear workshops that retains the distinctive architectural and plan form characteristics of a jewellery-manufactory building

* Strong group value with other listed jewellery manufactory buildings

* It exemplifies the early pattern of development of a manufacturing district of Birmingham now considered to be of international significance

Lad in the Lane is a public house seen on the Bromford Lane in Erdington.

There was a To Let sign up on the building as I walked past it up the dual carriageway.

I previously spotted it from the 11A bus the previous time I went up to Erdington.

Founded 1306. One of the oldest inns in the country. The existing building

of C14/C15 origin but much altered and enlarged in the 1930s. Timber framed,

open hall of 3 bays divided by a cruck truss, considerably cut about and

with modern rafters and studding. Two more pairs of crucks in the south

wall. At the north end is a 2 storey crosswing, probably of early C16 build,

close studded with jowled corner posts. Cambered tie beam and collar with

raking struts to central truss, exposed storey posts. Externally the west

gable of wing has close studding with curved braces. Modern brick infill

and fenestration.
